    This video is sponsored by my Patreon patrons - THANK YOU!
    I'm going to be posting on TH-cam selected previously locked Patreon videos that are approximately 1.5 (one and a half) years old. This is one of them and TH-cam has already demonetised it with the standard claim that's it's not suitable for most advertisers....which always leaves me wondering why there's a ton of adverts when movies with the most disturbing content are aired on TV and cable? Those advertisers don't seem to have any qualms about placing their products with such content.

    • @MusicLeeSarah
      @MusicLeeSarah 3 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      TH-cam just uses that as an excuse I mean they've demonetized so many content creators under the guise of it's not suitable for advertisers or whatever. what the reality is of the situation is they want people to create content for free and they make money off of it from advertisers, regardless of what they claim. And I don't get it I mean they're part of Google they have more money than God. I can't wait for the day when there's another platform for content creators to use that appreciates them.
      Seems like the only people they're not demonetizing are their ringers. And by ringers I mean like the OG TH-camrs that they still have some kind of contract with. but once you start seeing their contracted content creators get demonetized you know that they were either bought out of their contract or it ran up and then going forward they get screwed like everyone else does... ☹️😡🤬

    My thoughts on Mary Bell (in no particular order):
    She was sexually abused. The aforementioned mutilation of Brian was specifically that Mary cut off the child's privrates. She also tended to attack smaller children and outright admitted it was because she liked making victims of those smaller than she was. All of this indicates that she was horrifically abused. (I think when she said she lost her virginity, she was referring to having consensual sex. I don't think she counted her sexual abuse as sex and considered herself a virgin.)
    HOWEVER, while I agree with her sentencing and do not mind that she was granted anonymity or custody of her child, I do agree with the families of the victims that profiting off of her crimes in any way should not be allowed.
    It's a sad case where Mary herself is concerned, but that doesn't make the families of those boys any less victims of her crimes than any other victims of any other brutal murders, and she should have no right to profit off their suffering.
    This is one of the few cases where I feel genuinely sorry for everyone involved. (Except Mary's mother. That woman was a piece of shit.)

    Very creepy. I once attended a funeral for a 10 year old girl. Her 8 year old sister found a hand gun in her aunt's mobile home, shot and killed her. At the funeral home, the 8 year old was over-heard telling her 4 year old sister not to make her mad or she'd kill her too. I worked with the aunt at a retail store. I don't know what became of that family but I'll never forget how sad and creepy the whole thing was.

    • @suet.r.4815
      @suet.r.4815 3 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Yikes! -I'm not sure that child really understood what had happened. She was at the "age of understanding", but there is actually an 'age range' wherein complex or abstract concepts are first understood by a child. Until then, words like 'killed' and 'dead' are parroted, rather than carrying true weight of meaning (this includes phrasiolgy such as"__ __ __ or I'll kill you too"). I sincerely hope that they got her some help, because if a person decides that they are "bad" or "damned", in childhood, it can become imprinted and self-fulfilling; and it will be extremely difficult to recover from in adulthood.
      As a five year old child, I attended the funeral of a four-year-old boy who had drowned. (My mother had three of us under five, and the youngest was a 1 year old but she didn't want to over-burden the babysitter who took the younger two) I went with Mom to the funeral, while the older children went to school and the little ones were kept by a town- cousin.
      I don't remember too much. The casket was so small. Too small, closed, and white, rather than open and dark-colored as usual.
      I remember asking my mother if he (the dead child) could come out when the funeral was over, because it was such a small, crowded box. I didn't press further when she said, "No" even though I didn't understand.
      It was a beautiful service, I think. But so sad... I haven't thought of that for many years....

      @@suet.r.4815It's important that children are not kept from reality, but there's a limit. I'm always astounded when people bring their children with flowers to a crime scene. They run a picture on the front page. It's a creepy photo op. I'm not talking about a family member. These are strangers, some who come from quite a distance. My brother lived near a well known site where an abducted child's body was found. People brought their own kids. Stood around. Retold the horrible story to their spooked little kids. When I see that photo (the children with flowers), I send a letter to the editor. I have almost ALWAYS heard a reply stating "Now that you mention it...."

    I used to know a chap who lived in the same street as Mary. He was a few years younger but was at school the same time. Mary's mother would entertain her clients whilst Mary was in the house. Mary was made to service these men as well. Les said many children at the school were afraid of Mary. They knew from very early on to keep away from her. From what I remember there were similarly disturbed children at my school in the 1970's as well. One lad blasted a younger boy to death with a shotgun over a minor falling out. He dumped his body in a ditch in a field not far from our school. It was very sad as the lad's father was abusive and battered him and his mother regularly. Finally my cousin married a lad from a nearby village called Lynemouth. This lad's full cousin was Mary Bell. Her family had relatives up here. Small world.

When I was about 12 or so, 2 little girls were abducted from our bus stop and murdered in Townsville, Queensland in Australia. So I guess this depravity has always been there after all. Just looking at footage of where they lived was enough to make me cringe. We were lucky I guess. Yes Oddie, I agree, it is a difficult one... She was a child herself with obvious traumas. I think with well treatment and care, a child could become a good adult. And for Mary it seemed to turn out that way. But for the parents of those sweet boys it must be indigestible. And honestly, I would be concerned for my children to live in her neighboorhood...

    As someone who worked with violent children in a mental health institution, I can't help but feel something for Mary in this situation, too. I've had kids go from saying or doing some pretty disturbing things to breaking down in tears and making it obvious that they are hurting so much. And I know that some children lose the ability to express that at all once their trauma reaches a threshold, resulting in this kind of "cold" behavior. I personally would be interested to know what kind of life she led and what kind of support system she had. But I also, obviously, feel for the victims' families and understand their anger and hurt, too. It's a terrible situation all around. 😢 So many conflicting feelings in cases like this.

Then again it's a lot to ask her to spend hours being questioned about all of her trauma and her life since, and to be poked and prodded like a science experiment.

    Another fantastic video! I’ve seen many videos about Mary Bell but this was the best. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
    This story shows the horrible effects of generations of abuse, poverty, and untreated mental illnesses and how that can spread throughout a community like poison. The absolute hatred and pain in the letter Mary and Norma left in the nursery is so shocking and disturbing.I can’t imagine how the mothers and fathers of those poor little children must have suffered and the fear those little ones felt. I pray that they were able to find peace and healing in some way.
    I agree that children can grow out of psycho pathic tendencies there’s this incredibly heartbreaking documentary about this little girl who was adopted and she was very cruel to her siblings and animals and her adoptive parents were struggling because they loved her but she was such a danger to the family. The little girl had been viciously abused starting basically from the time she was born. She did receive intense therapy and grow up to be a kind well-adjusted lady and she’s done a lot of work with advocating for abused children and children who suffer from mental illness. The Mary Bell case had to have been such a difficult case for the judge to make a decision being that Mary was so young but the victims were even younger and their deaths were so brutal. I think that the court didn’t have a choice but to give Mary a lifetime of anonymity for the sake of her daughter and grandchild. If they were able to find Mary it would be easy for them to find her daughter and grandchild even if their names have been changed. I think it was wrong for Mary to have profited a single penny from the death of those little boys and I think it was horrible for anyone to offer her money. I suppose it would be one thing if they asked her for an interview but told her they would not pay her but instead send the profits to the families of the victims or a charity as was suggested. Sorry for such a long comment.

    I’ve heard the stories about Mary Bell before but this was really comprehensive...and the follow up about her granted anonymity (that I hadn’t heard before) was very interesting.
    Your thoughts about growing out of psychopathic tendencies... 🤔 I would probably say no, but I really don’t know. In this case, perhaps her daughter was somehow the small, helpless thing that taught her empathy. That being said, I find it difficult to believe that anyone (even a child) who has psychopathic murderous tendencies, who gleefully acted on those fantasies, can then just...move on? Also, I suspect that her telling her story was both about the money and having an audience to retell these childhood fantasies to. Pretty screwed up all the way around.

      Actually children can't get diagnosed with Anti-social Personality Disorder because they naturally have many "psychopathic" traits and could easily be diagnosed with it and grow out of it as their brain develops. Also having anti-social personality disorder doesn't automatically make you evil - that's a stigma that's extremely harmful to those with the disorder as their seen as murderers or evil due to something they can't help even if their great people who've never done a thing wrong and are constantly helping others.
      There's other disorders they don't officially diagnose children with until their older or adults because as their brain develops they often (or can) go away. I think schizophrenia is another one like this

      Mary Bell and Robbie Thompson seem to have kept their heads down and I personally believe that once someone has served their sentence and been released, they should get another chance at life.
      As for whether any of those three should have ever been let out... I'm not sure, they took a risk with all three and it seems to have paid off two out of three times, but I do know this.
      Mary's children and grandchildren shouldn't suffer for what Mary has done, it's just passing down intergenerational heartbreak that Mary inherited from her mother.

Oh man...I believe she had a bad upbringing and her mother may have taken her frustrations out on Mary, which lead to Mary acting out her anger on others smaller than her. As she got older and was in the care of others, jail or hospitals or juvenile centers, she grew up and saw what she did was wrong. I don’t condone what she did, my heart goes out to the families and boys, but I do feel her problems stemmed from being treated poorly and maybe seeing stuff she shouldn’t as a child and learned from her mothers bad actions. Oh you know the Area? Well I'm in Country Durham so quite close to Newcastle. You are spot on about the people, once they get to know you they will adopt you. I was born in Yorkshire myself. I agree with your analysis of Mary. I can't recall if you have coved the case of Marry Ann Cotton? She's another Northeast killer, a black widow. She's often said to be Britain's first female serial killer. That Mary lived very close to were I live now. Great video as always.

    Thank you so much for addressing this case. My heart hurts for the victims and their families incredibly, but also for neglected and abused children who grow up being taught that they are unwanted....and unfortunately that can lead some to bury any empathy they may have due to the pain of not receiving it from the ones who should have given it to them in their formative years.

    Mary Bell should have been committed to an institution under good medical care to try and help her. A 10 year old that was so damaged is horrifying, she didn’t stand a chance. But on the other hand I love your Scotswood story.

    I don't think she should be able to profit from book sales that is kind of vile to me. I'm glad her family got anonymity not fair to punish her family for what she did. I really don't know if someone gets over being psychopathic, it's a hard question. Great video as always thanks Oddie and Sarah and the patrons!

    That's a fascinating case! I've never heard of this before, probably because I was bombarded with mostly american crime cases growing up. I have to say that based on everything you shared, I think it's good that she's free, allowed to be a mom and grandma. People can change if they want to and clearly she has grown up, matured, and chosen to do right. The fact that she was only 11 years old at the time of the murders is mind blowing to me. That's so young! I've personally known people who are reformed after a life of crime so I know it's possible and does occur. That being said, as always, I love your storytelling so much! You included a lot of pics and videos from the time, showing the actual people involved. And you just have this voice that could make the most boring story interesting and pleasant to listen to! Thank you for sharing this unusual story! A young girl abused and perhaps tortured, whether physically, mentally, or both, kills two even younger kids, does a bit of time but once released decides to live right and legally. I love it! It's a sad story with an encouraging ending.... 🤗🤗🤗

    I have to say that any time there's a case of a child murderer it bothers me a lot. We often view such things by our own yardstick, and our own memories of being that age. Personally, trying to seriously hurt or kill someone would never have crossed my mind as a child, and I had a fairly traumatic childhood in school. I was beaten and bullied almost daily for four years of public school, and for the most part nothing was done about it. There was a zero tolerance policy in place, but it applied to defending yourself as well, and if a victim did defend themselves, more than likely they would be the ones facing a punishment, not the bullies. I was many times accused of "instigating", basically bringing about getting beaten up, and this only happened when I defended myself. My own school principal flat out told me once that I was asking for it because I was "different", and that if I stopped being "different", acted like a boy should act (whatever that means), instead of being sensitive and reading all the time, I wouldn't be being hurt.
    Anyway, I didn't mean to get on a tangent. My point in that was to say that even those of us who've had traumas in our past don't always turn out to be murderers. I certainly didn't, and I can't imagine how someone could. If you've experienced it yourself, you'd have to be a very callous and unfeeling person to want to bring such things (or worse) on other people. There may be some mitigating factors for why she did what she did, but still, it was a choice. She could have simply done to other children what had been done to her, but she chose to go far beyond anything that may have been done to her, and kill. Those are my thoughts on it, anyway.
    Another masterpiece from you, Oddie. :) Very intriguing, and an interesting concept, how much priority the rights of convicted killers have as opposed to the victims and their families. How far is too far? Anonymity for her until she was an adult is one thing, as is the same for her daughter and granddaughter, because they bear no responsibility for what she did, but at what point should the legal system have said "Enough's enough!" in regards to her behaviour in selling her story? What ever happened with that part? Did the families win and did that money have to be turned over to a charity? I am curious about that, because I do believe there are laws in Britain about profiting from the commission of a felony.

      Tend to think , as I get older, that we don't have much of a choice in what personality type we born with . I recall meeting children in my childhood who had violent tendencies , were prone to lie and manipulate others just for the joy of it whereas others - my self too - were bullied or called 'weird' by the so called 'normal' children. As I recall, the bullies came from all sorts of background, if their parents were well off, then people thought the nasty offspring was simply spoiled rotten and if the bully came from 'lower social economic background' people thought it was the circumstances that made the child aggressive. Also, I have known children coming from abject poverty and a violent (drunken father) upbringing who turned out perfectly nice adults and I have met some people with psychotic tendencies who came from happy and nurturing family homes. Some aggressive, manipulative people have very nice siblings who, although coming from the very same environment never the less feel no need to exploit others or cause emotional or physical pain. I tend to think that environmental influence on the developing child is an overrated idea when we try to explain this anomaly of some children being violent. To be more precise, I think the environment has a role in the development of the child in the sense that since we all born with a particular disposition - mild , artistic, aggressive, etc. - we need to learn in life how to use our disposition for the best in our own circumstances in our own environment. If it is true that Mary Bell could renounce her tendencies and become like the rest of society a contributing member then she had learned the lesson this life gave her. If we, the bullied ones can learn to set our boundaries and become like the rest of society , then we have learned the lesson this life have given to us.

      @UnholyTriforceDelenn 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ametrineambrosia4929 yeah, it was a rather unfriendly place, that school, and my principal was more concerned with conformity than with what was just. The core of her zero tolerance policy was that if all students conformed to being "normal", then bullying simply wouldn't happen. Another of her solutions to bullying was to make the victims be "best friends" with the bully who had beaten them up, and walk to and from school with them, because she believed that would put a stop to it.

    • @UnholyTriforceDelenn
      @UnholyTriforceDelenn 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ametrineambrosia4929 Ironically, that's exactly the argument my mother used. She actually asked the principal if she thought that if she'd been raped that she should be made to be "best friends" with her rapist and walk to and from work with her abuser every day.
      The principal just didn't get it. She said that rape was completely different from bullying, and didn't get why my mother used that particular analogy.
