In 1929 an occultist from London travelled to the mysterious Scottish isle of Iona.
She belonged to the lodge of Alpha et Omega offshoot of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn; and wanted to perform a dangerous ceremony to contact Green Ray elementals.
Shortly after her arrival she became very agitated, and told her landlady that she had received terrifying messages from beyond the veil while in trances - and that she believed she was being psychically attacked from a distance.
The attacks were originating from several people on the island - she claimed.
Not long after her naked body was found by a search party.
Did she die of exposure or was a sinister force behind all this?

She may have been dancing nude in her ritual before her trance state to recieve those scratches? Her death was probably caused by a failure to return in time. Her body wasn't strong enough to hold the life from that distance. She went beyond the vail. Maybe she decided to join the green. No one will ever know. But common sense and science would say she was delusional and allowed herself to die from exposure. Either way, it's fascinating and I'm here for more of it, thank you Oddie!

So very interesting! I notice it was mentioned that she was fasting in an effort to put herself into a trance to make psychic contact with other spiritual beings. The physical weakness that can occur due to lack of nutrition combined with being exposed to the natural elements of cold, harsh wind, and I’m sure damp or downright wet conditions could cause death within only a matter of hours, especially since she was completely naked. Very sad end and I pray her soul is resting in eternal peace.

This was beautifully done Oddie. Back at that period of Occultism there were frequent “battles “ between different Orders and Lodges on the Spiritual level. This led Dion Fortune writing “Psychic Self Defence”, which is still in print. It is likely that Netta may have been caught up in some of that, as many were.
What I think more likely in her case though, is that she was undertaking workings beyond her level of training. She had no person there to guard her while she was doing these workings, or who had the skills to support her on the Spiritual Planes. That can be dangerous when attempting Elemental workings, as it appeared she was.
It is likely that she was a “natural”, who later sought out training to enable her to better control her gifts. It is not uncommon for serious Occultists to overestimate their own strength and abilities, and recklessly undertake a working that is beyond them. Even Aleister Crowley made that mistake.
This also occurred around the time of a great schism within the Golden Dawn, with Crowley forming his own Ordo Templis Orientis, ant Mathers heading the A.O. This precipitated a great deal of infighting and struggling for dominance and custodianship of certain teachings.
Netta appears to have been more in the mould of Dion Fortune in her interests and workings, but lacking the depth of training and the attention to safeguards that Dion employed. Dion was more focused on the ancient Deities in her workings, where Netta seemed to be drawn to the more raw Elemental energies, which are less refined, and consequently often contrary.
It is rather sad she met her end in this way, and I would have loved to read her notes and letters relating to the Earth Elemental workings she was undertaking at the time of her death.
Thank you, as always Dear Oddie, for bringing us this little gem from an interesting time in Occult history. Sending you love and light my friend.🖤🇨🇦

This was a very fascinating video, Oddie. I'm not sure exactly what happened that actually led to her death, but it certainly seems that starving herself and constantly entering trances were definite contributing factors. She was obviously scared about something in the last days she was there at Iona, but what it was is impossible to say.
I think mysticism, spiritualism and esotericism are very fascinating. I'd be interested in learning more about them.

As a lifelong occultist and practitioner of ceremonial magick, I am familiar with this story. And it's very possible that she expired due to both astral attack and the physical elements. She just couldn't handle what she was doing, and was doing it in a very haphazard and irresponsible way. I think it would be really cool if you did a series on aleister Crowley. There's more than enough material on him to do a two or three parter. He embodies all things Victorian.

@@ObsoleteOddity Thank you for getting back to me. I love all things Victorian. I used to own an estate sale business. And I had some amazing Victorian era things. Such as two funeral home lamps, that would be set on either side of the casket. They were beautiful. With a soft sunset glow from the glass. And furniture, oh my. They did everything with class back then. Hand made everything from wood to glass, and stone. I'm glad to have found your unique channel, where you often express your love of the victorian era, in this macabre sort of way. Which fits well with the era and subject matter, and which I love. Yes, I've studied the occult and western ceremonial magick for almost 30 year's! WOW, I hadn't actually thought about the long time that it has been apart of my life. I feel like I should have done so much more with it. However, people don't realize that being a real magician, is quite expensive and time consuming. If you want to actually practice magick, rather than just read about it. That's why, during the victorian age, it was exclusively people like Crowley who could actually embark on the endeavor whole heartedly. For instance Crowley was independently wealthy. Having inherited a fortune from his father, who owned a brewery. Of course Crowley squandered his inheritance, traveling the world, satiating his expensive tastes, and of course going all out on magickal paraphernalia in full. Some even say he bought his way up the degrees in certain orders like the Free Mason's. Being a member in several different fraternities. Supposed to have also purchased the right to use, and adapt Free Mason degree rights. By which I mean both legal rights, and archaic ceremonial rights/rituals. Crowley claimed to have had so many Masonic medals and pendants, that the weight of them could crush an elephant. Speaking of which I do believe there is a picture of him wearing as many as he could fit, and it's alot, to be sure. However in occult circle's he is better known for his having been given the head of the O.T.O./Ordo Templi Orientis/ Order of the Temple of the Orient/ Templars of the Orient. And creating the philosophy/religion of Thelema. Meaning both love, and will in greek. Both words having the same numerical value.etc.etc. ad nauseam. I did however wish to inform you, concerning to this particular tale, the woman was practicing Celtic/ Druidic magick in a powerful place (to put it simply). And it's well known, since ancient time's that this magick in particular, had a strong connection to UFO's. UFO's commonly appear when people are performing this kind of magick. Which is always outside, under the stars. Something I have witnessed myself, before even hearing about this connection... Which may account for the lights that were seen the night of her death. Also, Crowley is the very first modern person to have documented his experience in meeting a GREY ALIEN! Whom he evoked using the grimoire called The Key of Solomon. Which is traditionally known as a device for evoking demon's, and performing other magickal acts. Anyway, Crowley actually explained this in one of his writings. The name of the book escapes me now. It might be his book of confessions. But he claims to have actually spoken with this being. And not only describes it, but obtained it's name. Which is Lam... He also has drawn a picture of the being. Which is the very first pictorial representation of a grey alien in modern times. As well as the first encounter, and description. Look at the picture Crowley drew of Lam, and read his encounter. Then there's absolutely no mistaking that what he encountered that magickal night was an alien. Yes, that is Dion Fortune's assessment, that Netta was obsessed with Green Ray (elemental) occult work, to the point that Dion felt the need to avoid her for reasons of self protection. It sounds as if Netta was a very talented natural occultist but had no Earthing partner or other balance to keep her grounded. Dion also believed that Moina Mathers had attacked Netta from beyond the grave

Oddie, I may have previously both watched and commented on this story/video. But I’ll take a risk and comment because I just watched it. This video was given a much more hauntingly (not really the word I was searching for) effect due to the pictures and music. throughout the story. The pictures of the man sitting on a bench, I believe under a willow tree and the one of a woman walking in the rain with her umbrella, were 2 of my favorites. I think that the bottom line of this story is to keep an open mind and look around you. Is that corny? And once again I totally agree that the music added just the right touch.

I was so glad to see this upload in my feed but I was so upset to see that TH-cam hadn’t notified me until a month later. You were one of the first channels I ever subscribed to on here. I really miss seeing your videos. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to afford the patron subscription because it will definitely be worth it to see your videos more frequently like I used to. I knew the minute you started telling us the story who you were talking about. I’d heard about her case so many times over the years and it’s always fascinated me. I was so happy to see that you made the comment about most pictures that come up of her are actually the Mathers lady. It’s very odd that Dion thought the physic attack was from the Mathers woman and now her picture is always mistaken for Nora’s all of these years later. I just found that so interesting. I know I can always count on you for the fullest possible details on any of the stories you share with us. Thank you oddie for always doing such a wonderful job on all of the content you share with us. I hope you and your family are all doing well. Hopefully next time I will catch your upload much sooner. Somehow I missed this little gem!! What a hauntingly fascinating story...do you think she got stuck in the fairy realm? an alternate dimension? or did she wither away from hunger and exhaustion and mental illness?
