  • 2007 Mazda 3 - Complaint: Makes unusual clunking/tapping noise when hitting bumps. I drove the car and sounded like bad ball joints or bushings, metal to metal clunking noise when hitting bumps. Car drove fine except for the noise. This is how I fixed the problem.

    You absolute legend! Ive had an increased knocking/ clunking noise from the front passenger side wheel area everytime the car hits even a minor dip on our shitty roads littered with pot holes here in UK. Had the drop arm link thing sorted not far back and have been putting it off getting fixed due to lack of cash atm but this video will honestly get me a proper night's sleep now. For any novice not quite sure of any mechanical issues with their motor and are in a similar situation as me i can't stress enough how fantastic tuition videos like this gem are.

    Excellent point. I triple checked everything: strut bolt , swaybar link, CV axle , rug nuts, break retainer clip etc ... but could not figure out the root of noise.
    I ordered offset wrench so will try your solution this weekend.

    • @mattak77
      @mattak77 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok...I tried last night, with hex socket holding the middle and offset wrench 18mm and attempted to turn the nut but it's super tight already.
      In your case was it not tight when you first tried? I don't want to strip nut. Torque spec was like 40-60lbs but couldn't confirm because I can't use torque wrench..

    • @mattak77
      @mattak77 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just to follow up, it was the new strut assembly being defective. I put it back old one and no clunk. I'm sure it was top nut not being seated correctly but I don't have tool to disassemble so returned the product.

    • @siiioxide
      @siiioxide 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      who replaced the springs without checking the shocks? this would be easily noticed to be loose too without a spring in place.

    • @inee107
      @inee107 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@siiioxide um no. the bolt was loose - it doesnt mean the shocks were dangling and swaying. the shocks were tight enough to not move when lifted but on pavement with weight and pushed under pressure, it showed the bolt to have some clearance to the nut. this is NOT easily noticeable unless you are looking for it. one would be checking all the parts BELOW the engine bay and not necessarily on top.

    Hello, I have a clunking noise in my Mazda3 MPS / Mazdaspeed3, I changed the front upper mounts, a good ones, and It stopped making the clonk noise, but after 1-2 hours driving, started the noise again.

    Thanks for the video! I’m trying to figure out some clanking in my car and recently (3k miles ago) had the struts, control arms, and links replaced, so thought this might be it. I couldn’t really seem to tighten the bolt, but am not sure if I’m getting enough leverage with the 6mm Allen key (it’s 5-6inches long). It doesn’t seem to want to tighten anymore. Curious if you used an L shaped Allen key to hold it in place or if you used an Allen bit on a ratcheting wrench? It’s on there pretty tight but I guess I’m wondering if it’s just that I’m not getting enough torque on there. Thanks!

    • @TheHandsOnChannel
      @TheHandsOnChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could try the socket type for a little more torque, but I think I just used a standard Allen wrench with a small cheater bar. Also take a look at sway bar bushings as they can make a similar clunk. Good luck!

      Could be a number of probable causes that if it were me I would get info about. Not being a mechanic myself I would first try to locate the clunk noise on a quiet road at night just to be sure im in the right ball park when going through main parts bit by bit. I often over think the why and how of things and forget to start with the basics. Loose connections I.e ...bolts, nut or clips missing or perished. Then track down the line at the bigger shit that scares my bank balance! I am a follower of a guy called scotty kilmer on TH-cam and would recommend his channel massively mate. That bloke from the u.s is an absolute book of knowledge and has a video on just about everything on nearly all car makes from day dot.
