One of my all time favourite movies!
Rick Moranis ended up costing Mel Brooks "a lot" of money, since the crew (including Brooks) couldn't help but laugh during his scenes, most notably when he first appears on screen and has breathing problems.
George Lucas lended the services of his company ILM to shoot some scenes. The escape pod dropping out was actually a (once) deleted scene from A New Hope. He agreed to let Brooks make the movie on the condition that he couldn't make merchandise, hence the running gag throughout the movie. And he didn't want Lone Star to dress like Han, so Brooks chose to dress him like Indiana Jones.
Rick Moranis improvised the entire scene where he plays with his dolls, he was sick and had a fever that day and still came up with one of the best scenes.
The original title was Planet Moron.
Brooks had a bad reaction to the Yogurt make up and got a bad rash around his eyes.
The voice Dark Helmet has when his... dark helmet visor is down is inspired by David Prose, the physical actor for Darth Vader in the original trilogy, and how he sounded with the mask on set. You can find footage of it.

The spaceball doing the sound effects was Michael Winslow, of Police Academy fame, well known for his sound effect skill
In Star Wars it’s _light_ speed
There’s no official Spaceballs merchandise because that was George Lucas’s only condition in the deal for parodying Star Wars. Best case, you can find fan made stuff or get something custom made. I got a custom phone cover.
I think Lone Star is like 90% Han and 10% Luke
The diner patron who gets chestbursted is John Hurt, who’s character in Alien also got chestbursted, hence him saying “Not again.”
There’s actually a second movie in the works with Josh Gad set to star and co produce alongside Mel Brooks

  • @jamesfischer2427
    @jamesfischer2427 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

One of the reasons that the merchandising is so prominent in the movie is that when Mel Brooks asked George Lucas if he was okay with a Star Wars parody, George Lucas said, it was okay as long as they didn't try to sell merchandise that might conflict with his merchandising rights to Star Wars.

Like his other "parody" films, Mel Brooks got in contact with George Lucas about making fun of STAR WARS.
Since Lucas was a fan of YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN and BLAZING SADDLES, he had no issues, except one:

When the alien does his dance routine and sings "Ragtime Gal", it's a reference (and the song is directly taken from) for the Merrie Melodies cartoon One Froggy Evening by Chuck Jones, where Michigan J Frog sings this song while doing a similiar dance like the alien.

Most reactors miss this gag: the opening long shot showing the spaceship, the original Alien movie opens much like that. Mel Brooks parodies it by making an even longer ship, so every time you think “now we’ve reached the back”, it just keeps going. And of course the Jaws music. George Lucas was a huge fan of Mel Brooks. When Mel had him read over the script to get his permission/blessing to do it, George loved it but had one caveat, they couldn't sell any toys or merch of the movie. He felt that they looked to close to the Star Wars toys, and didn't want to take away from his toy sales, which is why there were several bits in the movie about merchandise...

Yeah Lucas made all the Star Wars merchandise money due to a smart deal he made with the movie studio to direct Star Wars at a discount rate.

Brooks was told he could parody Star Wars but he couldn't sell merchandise because it would possibly cut into Star Wars merchandise. The placements in Space Balls was Brooks' sarcastic reaction to that condition.

Although he hasn't made a sequel for any of his movies, up till now...
Mel Brooks, the comedy giant best known for classic films including Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, and The Producers, is not averse to revisiting his old material. Last year he produced and starred in the Hulu series History of the World, Part II, a follow-up to his 1981 film History of the World, Part I.
Brooks is also producing a “Spaceballs” sequel starring Josh Gad. Brooks and Gad are producing the movie for Amazon MGM Studios based on a screenplay by Gad and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” writers Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez.

In defense of the Alien scene, the biggest part of that joke was the "Oh no, not again". This is because John Hurt was the same actor from the scene they were making in parody.
All the Spaceballs merchandise that is available came along long after the fact. Mel was simply poking fun at George Lucas for his merchandising campaigns with each film.

The dancing ALIEN skit is an homage to the singing frog from WB cartoons. George Lucas loved the idea of this film and even helped out with ILM for the ship models, space shots plus other effects' including the dancing ALIEN. His only condition to making the film was that they couldn't release figurines and other merchandise, as he was worried some people would not be able to tell the difference and would end up buying the wrong thing; so this lead to the merchandising skits that were seen throughout the film. They merged Luke and Han together for Lone Star, and they merged Obi Wan with Yoda for Yogurt; it was the only way to work the story without making it too complex and overcrowded...

Mel Brooks basically went to George Lucas to get his approval and they agreed on what could and couldn't be done. As others have said, they couldn't actually do any merchandising from this movie, but in typical Mel Brooks fashion, he went out of his way to parody all of the merchandising from the Star Wars franchise. With all of the great movies that came out in 1987, Space Balls ended up only netting about $16 million at the box office. So many more people finally saw it once it was released on VHS and fell in love with the movie.

RE: merchandising. The ONLY merchandise for this movie appeared ONLY in the movie. Lucas loved the spoof idea, giving them free reign with ONE condition...NO movie merchandise would be permitted. Probably why Yogurt needed a 'Spaceballs II (the search for more money)' LOL

8:24 waiting until they catch on the “Prince Valium” 9:17 no it’s a Winnebago. 15:35 leaving the hair dryer behind and carrying an empty case. 18:04 Mel Brooks had to walk on his knees for playing Yogurt. 18:27 this was thrown in cause Lucas’ main stipulation was no merchandise cause he didn’t want any confusion between Star Wars merchandise and Spaceballs. 19:30 Brooks is Jewish so Schwartz makes sense. He loves doing Jewish jokes like Druidia and the princess not looking “Druish”. 20:41 there was a joke recently about a Spaceballs sequel called “Spaceballs 3: The Search for Spaceballs 2” 30:17 still doesn’t look like they caught on to the Prince’s name and the way he’s acting. Prince Valium and he’s always sleepy.

Fun fact: NONE of those merchandise were ever on sale, it's all there just for the joke. While striking a deal with Lucas so they wouldn't risk getting sued and one thing Lucas asked was that they not make merch so consumers wouldn't be confused on what's a Star Wars product and what isn't.
