The Alien scene, the reason the man says “not again” is because the actor is John Hurt, he played the character Caine in the film Alien, that has the alien burst out of his chest!
One of the gags I love most in this movie that I rarely see mentioned is during the "comb the desert" scene. Whenever Dark Helmet is talking to Colonel Sanders, who's right next to him, Helmet uses the megaphone and points it right in Sanders's face. But when he's talking to the guys a hundred yards away doing the combing, he just shouts at them.
The subtle jokes are just as good as the obvious ones. When Dark Helmet slams into the wall after stopping from Ludicrous speed and says to take a 5 minute break, it's actually 5 minutes of runtime before he's onscreen again. The merchandising scene was in the film as Lucas gave Brooks the ability to make the film and use his effects studio as long as there was no merchandising. He also wasn't allowed to have Lonestar look like Han Solo, so Brooks made him look like Indiana Jones instead. The actor in the diner with the chest buster is the actor that had this in Alien, hence the "not again" line. Love this film and watching people discover it ❤
George Lucas also handed some B-Roll from 'A New Hope' to Brooks for usage. The escape pod launch at the end is unused footage from the droids' escape in the beginning of Episode 4.
That's probably my favorite bit from this movie - Helmet is shouting at the men combing the desert, but uses the megaphone to talk to Sandurz right next to him
The radar tech who did the sound effects is Michael Winslow. He appeared in the Police Academy franchise and some other stuff before taking a break to raise his children after his wife died. A year or two ago, he competed on America's Got Talent. Michael actually saved some production money on this movie by doing his own sound effects.
One of my all time favourite movies! Rick Moranis ended up costing Mel Brooks "a lot" of money, since the crew (including Brooks) couldn't help but laugh during his scenes, most notably when he first appears on screen and has breathing problems. George Lucas lended the services of his company ILM to shoot some scenes. The escape pod dropping out was actually a (once) deleted scene from A New Hope. He agreed to let Brooks make the movie on the condition that he couldn't make merchandise, hence the running gag throughout the movie. And he didn't want Lone Star to dress like Han, so Brooks chose to dress him like Indiana Jones. Rick Moranis improvised the entire scene where he plays with his dolls, he was sick and had a fever that day and still came up with one of the best scenes. The original title was Planet Moron. Brooks had a bad reaction to the Yogurt make up and got a bad rash around his eyes. The voice Dark Helmet has when his... dark helmet visor is down is inspired by David Prose, the physical actor for Darth Vader in the original trilogy, and how he sounded with the mask on set. You can find footage of it.
Valium is a prescribed medication that relaxes you and makes you sleepy. That is why Prince Valium is yawning/sleeping. It's one of my favourite jokes in the movie

@@DrJohnnyFever.Makes the most sense if he's talking about Lone Star's uncle's nephew on his wife's side. His cousin would have no blood relations to Lone Star.
The baby Alien singing is an homage to a very classic Warner Brothers cartoon, where a man down on his luck finds a magical frog that does that song and dance. However, every time he tries to show the magical frog to someone, the frog doesn't do the act. So everyone thinks the man is crazy. (Sigh) when cartoons weren't afraid to be dark in subtle ways.
Easter egg for you Addie, don't know if you noticed or not but when our boys stop at the cafe near the end of the film, you'll notice the Millennium Falcon parked out front......🤣🤣🤣
"You idiots! You've captured their stunt doubles!" My favorite joke of the movie. Stephen Tobolowsky crushes his one scene. He's so pompous until the reveal and his gasp of shock is perfect 🤣🤣🤣
Speaking of Stephen Tobolowsky, I also suggest Bird on a Wire (1990), with Mel Gibson & Goldie Hawn, and the Disney Channel Original Movie, Don't Look Under The Bed (1999), for Halloween. #MoreStephenTobolowskyForAddieCounts
A fun fact...when Rick Moranis says 'why don't we take a five minute break', it's exactly 5 minutes in the film before we see the spaceballs again. In case you didn't realize, or know, the late Sir John Hurt was the guy who had the alien come out of him. He was the original actor from Alien as well. Some great little bit's a pieces about this film which makes it funnier when you know. Mel Brooks had to get permission from George Lucas who only agreed on the grounds that they sold no merchandise and that Lone Starr couldn't dress as Han Solo. So brooks filled the movie with fake merch and dressed Lone Starr like Indiana Jones instead. There's polystyrene cups everywhere cause cast and crew kept leaving them all over the set, so Brooks just wrote them into the film. And one of my favorite joke of the movie is the stunt double one. There are a lot of 4th wall breaking jokes in the movie (the spaceball cassette, the cameraman getting slashed by Darth Helmet, Yoghurt doing merchandising stuff because "it's where real money from the movie is made" but the stunt double one really made me lose it completely as it was completely unexpected. It was so well done!
It is essential to the enjoyment of High Anxiety for you to have at least a working knowledge of Hitchcock. Vertigo, primarily, but The Birds, North by Northwest, and Gaslight. I'm sure I'm forgetting one or two.
High Anxiety was my first Mel Brooks movie, going back to when I was a little kid in the late 70s, and even though I didn't know any Hitchcock movies at the time, I still loved it.
A couple of other classic movie references in the film - - when they land in the desert, the music switches to a theme very close to the *Lawrence of Arabia* soundtrack music. When they enter Yogurt's cave and are walking down the hall, it's a callback to *The Wizard of Oz* when Dorothy and her companions are going to confront the Wizard. The actor from whose chest the Alien burst out of was John Hurt, who played the astronaut in the original *Alien* film, which is why he said "Not again!" before expiring.
😄👍 In case you forgot, King Roland was played by Dick Van Patten, who also played The Abbott in "Robin Hood, Men In Tights." He's also in "High Anxiety." 😜
I absolutely LOVE this movie. I remember whenever it was on FX I would stay up to watch it, many many years ago. Still a childhood favourite of mine. I think my favourite line is definitely: "No sir! I didn't see you playing with your dolls again!" "Good!" ("Oh crap" face follows).
15:32 So, I admittedly have never fact checked this, but supposedly this joke originated when Mel Brooks asked George Lucas for his blessing to make this parody, and Lucas (who was a fan of Mel Brooks) replied with “No toys.”
John Hurt had no idea he was going to recreate his chest buster scene from Alien when Mel asked him to do a cameo but enjoyed going along with it. The song the Alien sings is actually from an old Looney Tunes cartoon where Michigan K. Frog sings and dances that number. The gag in the cartoon is the frog only performs for one man who thinks he can get rich with the frog but gets derided because the frog never performs in front of others.
The little alien running over the table is also what I consider the only bad effects shot in Alien. It does look very goofy. And I always have to think about Spaceballs when I see it again.
10:37 this is how I figured out what ludicrous meant. I was the last one of my friend group to see this movie (iirc, it came out in 4th or5th grade) because we’d generally wait for the movie to come out on VHS. I finally figured it out.

Spaceballs (1987) is the very first Mel Brooks movie that I ever watched and I really enjoyed it. I totally agree with you here on how delightfully stupid this one is because there are so many funny moments for me like "We Brake For Nobody", "Radar about to be jammed", "Ludicrous Speed", Dot Matrix's Virgin Alarm, and my personal favorites, Merchandising (where the REAL money from the movie is made) & combing the desert. Here's a mind-blowing fun fact: the actor who plays one of the Spaceballs who combs the desert with a giant Afro pick and says "We ain't found s**t!" is the same actor who played Principal Franklin on iCarly, Tim Russ. BTW, I loved how you turned the tables on the "If you can read this, you don't need glasses." joke, because you were wearing contacts. And I even got a good laugh out of Pizza the Hutt. I can still eat pizza while watching that scene. Also, if you were to watch the 4:3 Full Screen version of the movie, then the scene where they fast forward to the part where everything that's happening is happening now will align well with the TV that's playing the exact same scene in the movie. See you on Halloween for Young Frankenstein (1974). #SpaceballsTheHashtag
2:59, "Did I get tricked into watching this movie and it's just actually a ridiculously long shot of a ship for an hour and a half?" LOL, the ridiculously long shot of the ship is only a MINUTE and a half.
The actress who plays the nurse was also in Starship Troopers. She played the Captain who gets killed by the door of the transport ship Rodger Young. ...and the "Valium is a pill" joke never gets old.
George Lucas made Mel Brooks sign contract that he would never make any merchandise about Spaceballs the movie. That's how George made millions on Star Wars, Then he had George's blessing to make the spoof.
Yogurt's store full of merchandise was pretty spot on. I was 5 when Star Wars came out in '77 and I still remember there was Star Wars merchandise everywhere back then, and I mean EVERYWHERE!!! Toothbrushes, bedspreads, action figures, jigsaw puzzles, t-shirts, Dixie Cups, paint by numbers, comic books, etc.... I even had a 45 record (the artist name was Meco) of the Star Wars Cantina Band doing disco!
Best Mel Brooks Movie is "History of the World: Part 1. Hysterical from beginning to end. Only Mel Brooks can turn The Spanish Inquisition into a musical number.
The hilarious part about Dark Helmet and Lone Starr meeting is that, depending on the number of cousins Lone Starr has, they have actually _been_ former roommates.
There are actors who appear in multiple Mel Brooks Movies (besides Mel himself). For example, Dick Van Patten, who played King Roland in this movie, also played the Abbot in Men in Tights. Also, Dom DeLuise, who voiced Pizza the Hutt, also appeared as Don Giovanni in Men in Tights. Dom also appeared in Blazing Saddles, Silent Movie, and History of the World, Part I. If you haven't watched it yet, I'd highly recommend watching Young Frankenstein, another Mel Brooks movie, starring Gene Wilder. Gene and Mel wrote the screenplay while working on Blazing Saddles.
Long time ago there was a rumour that there would be a sequel, called space balls 3 the search for space balls 2. Plus fun fact, the trooper "combing" the desert and yelled "we ain't found s$#t!, later played a character named tuvok on star trek voyager.
After I watched this for the first time - back in my teenage years - you could always get me absolutely paralyzed with histerical laughter by quoting the line "Comb the desert!"
When President Scroob says "Sanders, You gotta help me I can't make decisions, I'm a President!" It always makes me bust up laughing. Also the "Great I knew it I'm surrounded by assholes." Is always hilarious, so glad you finally watched this!
The intro with the lengthy Spaceball 1 flyby (a little under 2 minutes) obviously parodies the scale of the Star Destroyer flying over (though that’s actually less than 20 seconds) in _Star Wars,_ but also parodies _Alien_ in duration (from the first shot of the ship to the first shot of the crew is about 4 minutes). Very clever combination there. 😄
Thanks. A fun review. The scene where Dark Helmet says "Smoke if you got 'em" and falls on his face is my favorite scene. It doesn't look like you've reviewed Young Frankenstein yet. It's my favorite Mel Brooks movie.
Thanks for the great reaction to a great movie, and bless you (for the sneeze) (and in general, I guess, too). Let's hope we all have a great week ahead of us

Lol, at the theater I remember the people laughed harder at the baby alien's dance number in spite of it being spoiled in the tv trailers. 😂
One of my favourite subtle jokes in this movie is when Col Sanders asks Dark Helmet if they are taking the “combing of the desert” too literally. Dark Helmet uses the megaphone to talk to Sanders who is standing right beside him, but yells at the Spaceballs on the sand without the megaphone. I howl every single time I watch that scene. 2nd favourite, not so subtle line is “Out of order?! Fuck!” 😆

2:59, "Did I get tricked into watching this movie and it's just actually a ridiculously long shot of a ship for an hour and a half?"
LOL, the ridiculously long shot of the ship is only a MINUTE and a half.
That's how George made millions on Star Wars,
Then he had George's blessing to make the spoof.
I tapped so fast when I got this notif, I literally just watched this movie the other day. Excellent timing lol
Everyone misses the huge Wizard of Oz reference.
Best Mel Brooks Movie is "History of the World: Part 1. Hysterical from beginning to end. Only Mel Brooks can turn The Spanish Inquisition into a musical number.
it's cute how you always know you are about to sneeze before you do! It's always random when I do
Since I first saw this in '87, the Alien scene makes me laugh, and when he Michigan J. Frog's his way across the counter I still lose it. So, so good.
yessss!
seen it a million times, and i never get bored!
The whole scene of Dark Helmet playing with the dolls was totally improvised by Rick Moranis after a suggestion by director Brooks.
Beautiful. Spaceballs, the Reactor! A pleasure to watch you work.
"Spaceballs" and "Airplane!" are the only 2 spoof movies I like. And I love them both.
You ought to try “High anxiety” also by Mel Brooks
It’s an homage to Alfred Hitchcock.
Watch Star Wreck.
Walk Hard
I thought Young Frankenstein was the best movie Mel Brooks made.
Long time ago there was a rumour that there would be a sequel, called space balls 3 the search for space balls 2. Plus fun fact, the trooper "combing" the desert and yelled "we ain't found s$#t!, later played a character named tuvok on star trek voyager.
Tim Russ
Would their circus really have been a circus without a bear?
I would have found it unbearable
In the French dub, ludicrous speed is called "vitesse grotesque" and I think I like that more.
Merci
After I watched this for the first time - back in my teenage years - you could always get me absolutely paralyzed with histerical laughter by quoting the line "Comb the desert!"
16:00 idk why, but that look gets me every time 😂 I'm glad you appreciated it too
When President Scroob says "Sanders, You gotta help me I can't make decisions, I'm a President!" It always makes me bust up laughing. Also the "Great I knew it I'm surrounded by assholes." Is always hilarious, so glad you finally watched this!
Such a awesome movie, one of my favorites. Thank you for watching it Addie, I hope you enjoyed it and had fun. 😂 ❤
This movie was the second DVD I owned for myself. It's so funny, no matter how many times I've watched it.
That is also a line from Beetlejuice about the movie The Exorcist
May the schwartz be with you….and your reply of “and also with you”. Made the Catholic in me giggle a bit!
There's a special place in my heart reserved for this movie.
And also with you! 😅. Being a Methodist I always say that in response to hearing “May the force be with you “
Thanks. A fun review. The scene where Dark Helmet says "Smoke if you got 'em" and falls on his face is my favorite scene. It doesn't look like you've reviewed Young Frankenstein yet. It's my favorite Mel Brooks movie.
The use of Chapter Eleven in the opening crawl is a joke about bankruptcy.
Combing the desert is my favourite.
Also the nurse of the plastic surgeon is the same actress who played the main big ship captain in STARSHIP TROOPERS
this movie is one of the few I bought on VHS, that collection only grew to about 2 dozen.
Addie, you made one of the most fun reactions to this movie. Thank you.
Love watching these old films with you
Thanks for the great reaction to a great movie, and bless you (for the sneeze) (and in general, I guess, too). Let's hope we all have a great week ahead of us
When Mel Brooks asked Lucas for permission to do "Spaceballs", Lucas said no merchandising and Lone Star couldn't look like Han Solo, so Brooks made Lone Star look like Indiana Jones.
Lol, at the theater I remember the people laughed harder at the baby alien's dance number in spite of it being spoiled in the tv trailers. 😂
Mel Brooks's with the Gene Wilder mustache from Young Frankenstein
26:03 bless you! 🤧lol
The chapter 11 bit in the beginning is also a bankruptcy reference. Chapter 11 bankruptcy is the type you most often hear about.
Thanks for a great reaction as we approach Mel Brooks' birthday on June 28th!🥳👍🏾👏🏾
your laugh is so infectious. i absolutely love it.
My favourite line in the movie:
- "No, sir I didn't see you playing with your dolls again!" (and saying it out loud 😁)
Mine too
I think you would enjoy History of the World part 1, High Anxiety and Dracula dead and loving it.
The long ship shot is a play on both the long ship glamour shots in Alien and the original Star Trek movie.
Try A New Hope
One of my favourite subtle jokes in this movie is when Col Sanders asks Dark Helmet if they are taking the “combing of the desert” too literally.
Dark Helmet uses the megaphone to talk to Sanders who is standing right beside him, but yells at the Spaceballs on the sand without the megaphone. I howl every single time I watch that scene.
2nd favourite, not so subtle line is “Out of order?! Fuck!” 😆
The look of abject horror on your face watching the “playing with dolls” scene was absolutely priceless.
I like the line I didn't see you playing with your dolls again. Ilove the again part. How many time has Dark Helmet been caught.
I remeber seeing the original trailer, black screen with word SPACE on it and Mel comes into the scene saying where is the BALLS?
delightful fun watching a rom-com with Addie
You won't believe how happy I was seeing your video pop up for me!!
this movie is so great!
One of my all time favorite movies. Enjoyed watching you enjoy it ;) p.s. In an interview it was stated that Colonel Sandurz is called that for the sole purpose of the Colonel Sanders Chicken joke. My favorite useless fact on this movie ;). See you in the next :)
The "Chapter XI" gag is because the first Star Wars starts with "Episode IV"
Plus, Chapter 11 is a legal term for a form of bankruptcy. Mel Brooks may have been having financial troubles!
The first Star Wars edition didn't mention any episodes. That came later.
@@Caseytify only 4 years later when it was re-released in theaters...
Also, Chapter 11 is a bankruptcy filing, under which reorganization of assets and debts is permitted.
Trust Brooks to spoof from the very start. Bankruptcy joke to begin.
