One of the gags I love most in this movie that I rarely see mentioned is during the "comb the desert" scene. Whenever Dark Helmet is talking to Colonel Sanders, who's right next to him, Helmet uses the megaphone and points it right in Sanders's face. But when he's talking to the guys a hundred yards away doing the combing, he just shouts at them.

The subtle jokes are just as good as the obvious ones. When Dark Helmet slams into the wall after stopping from Ludicrous speed and says to take a 5 minute break, it's actually 5 minutes of runtime before he's onscreen again.
The merchandising scene was in the film as Lucas gave Brooks the ability to make the film and use his effects studio as long as there was no merchandising.
He also wasn't allowed to have Lonestar look like Han Solo, so Brooks made him look like Indiana Jones instead.
The actor in the diner with the chest buster is the actor that had this in Alien, hence the "not again" line.
Love this film and watching people discover it ❤

The radar tech who did the sound effects is Michael Winslow. He appeared in the Police Academy franchise and some other stuff before taking a break to raise his children after his wife died. One of my all time favourite movies!
Rick Moranis ended up costing Mel Brooks "a lot" of money, since the crew (including Brooks) couldn't help but laugh during his scenes, most notably when he first appears on screen and has breathing problems.
George Lucas lended the services of his company ILM to shoot some scenes. The escape pod dropping out was actually a (once) deleted scene from A New Hope. He agreed to let Brooks make the movie on the condition that he couldn't make merchandise, hence the running gag throughout the movie. And he didn't want Lone Star to dress like Han, so Brooks chose to dress him like Indiana Jones.
Rick Moranis improvised the entire scene where he plays with his dolls, he was sick and had a fever that day and still came up with one of the best scenes.
The original title was Planet Moron.
Brooks had a bad reaction to the Yogurt make up and got a bad rash around his eyes.
The voice Dark Helmet has when his... dark helmet visor is down is inspired by David Prose, the physical actor for Darth Vader in the original trilogy, and how he sounded with the mask on set. You can find footage of it.

A fun fact...when Rick Moranis says 'why don't we take a five minute break', it's exactly 5 minutes in the film before we see the spaceballs again. In case you didn't realize, or know, the late Sir John Hurt was the guy who had the alien come out of him. He was the original actor from Alien as well. Some great little bit's a pieces about this film which makes it funnier when you know. Mel Brooks had to get permission from George Lucas who only agreed on the grounds that they sold no merchandise and that Lone Starr couldn't dress as Han Solo. So brooks filled the movie with fake merch and dressed Lone Starr like Indiana Jones instead.
There's polystyrene cups everywhere cause cast and crew kept leaving them all over the set, so Brooks just wrote them into the film. And one of my favorite joke of the movie is the stunt double one. There are a lot of 4th wall breaking jokes in the movie (the spaceball cassette, the cameraman getting slashed by Darth Helmet, Yoghurt doing merchandising stuff because "it's where real money from the movie is made" but the stunt double one really made me lose it completely as it was completely unexpected. A couple of other classic movie references in the film - - when they land in the desert, the music switches to a theme very close to the *Lawrence of Arabia* soundtrack music. When they enter Yogurt's cave and are walking down the hall, it's a callback to *The Wizard of Oz* when Dorothy and her companions are going to confront the Wizard. The actor from whose chest the Alien burst out of was John Hurt, who played the astronaut in the original *Alien* film, which is why he said "Not again!" before expiring.

John Hurt had no idea he was going to recreate his chest buster scene from Alien when Mel asked him to do a cameo but enjoyed going along with it. The song the Alien sings is actually from an old Looney Tunes cartoon where Michigan K. Frog sings and dances that number. The gag in the cartoon is the frog only performs for one man who thinks he can get rich with the frog but gets derided because the frog never performs in front of others.

Lone Star's little pause as he checks the logic of "So, At last we meet for the first time for the last time." is one of my favorite underrated moments in this film.

Spaceballs: The TH-cam Comment to Spaceballs: The Addie Counts Reaction. May the Schwartz be with you, Addie. Spaceballs (1987) is the very first Mel Brooks movie that I ever watched and I really enjoyed it. I totally agree with you here on how delightfully stupid this one is because there are so many funny moments for me like "We Brake For Nobody", "Radar about to be jammed", "Ludicrous Speed", Dot Matrix's Virgin Alarm, and my personal favorites, Merchandising (where the REAL money from the movie is made) & combing the desert. Here's a mind-blowing fun fact: the actor who plays one of the Spaceballs who combs the desert with a giant Afro pick and says "We ain't found s**t!" is the same actor who played Principal Franklin on iCarly, Tim Russ. BTW, I loved how you turned the tables on the "If you can read this, you don't need glasses." joke, because you were wearing contacts. And I even got a good laugh out of Pizza the Hutt. I can still eat pizza while watching that scene. Also, if you were to watch the 4:3 Full Screen version of the movie, then the scene where they fast forward to the part where everything that's happening is happening now will align well with the TV that's playing the exact same scene in the movie. See you on Halloween for Young Frankenstein (1974). #SpaceballsTheHashtag

2:59, "Did I get tricked into watching this movie and it's just actually a ridiculously long shot of a ship for an hour and a half?"
LOL, the ridiculously long shot of the ship is only a MINUTE and a half.

The actress who plays the nurse was also in Starship Troopers. She played the Captain who gets killed by the door of the transport ship Rodger Young.

George Lucas made Mel Brooks sign contract that he would never make any merchandise about Spaceballs the movie.
That's how George made millions on Star Wars,
Then he had George's blessing to make the spoof.

Yogurt's store full of merchandise was pretty spot on. I was 5 when Star Wars came out in '77 and I still remember there was Star Wars merchandise everywhere back then, and I mean EVERYWHERE!!! Toothbrushes, bedspreads, action figures, jigsaw puzzles, t-shirts, Dixie Cups, paint by numbers, comic books, etc.... I even had a 45 record (the artist name was Meco) of the Star Wars Cantina Band doing disco!

There are actors who appear in multiple Mel Brooks Movies (besides Mel himself). For example, Dick Van Patten, who played King Roland in this movie, also played the Abbot in Men in Tights. Also, Dom DeLuise, who voiced Pizza the Hutt, also appeared as Don Giovanni in Men in Tights. Dom also appeared in Blazing Saddles, Silent Movie, and History of the World, Part I.
If you haven't watched it yet, I'd highly recommend watching Young Frankenstein, another Mel Brooks movie, starring Gene Wilder. Gene and Mel wrote the screenplay while working on Blazing Saddles.

The intro with the lengthy Spaceball 1 flyby (a little under 2 minutes) obviously parodies the scale of the Star Destroyer flying over (though that’s actually less than 20 seconds) in _Star Wars,_ but also parodies _Alien_ in duration (from the first shot of the ship to the first shot of the crew is about 4 minutes). Very clever combination there. 😄

One of my favourite subtle jokes in this movie is when Col Sanders asks Dark Helmet if they are taking the “combing of the desert” too literally.
Dark Helmet uses the megaphone to talk to Sanders who is standing right beside him, but yells at the Spaceballs on the sand without the megaphone. I howl every single time I watch that scene.
2nd favourite, not so subtle line is “Out of order?! Fuck!” 😆
