I'm commenting too much on this video but for context: I am a resident sad boy who has been playing magic for 10+ years and nothing makes me happier than seeing new/rediscovered players being so excited about the game. Poor Jarvis hasn't realized that once you have the magic bug it's hard to put it into maintenance mode simply because the game is so varied and good.
favorite part of the pod is hearing Jarvis slowly transition into different hyperfixations. i’m currently hyperfixated on plants. i get a bit too impulsive and spend too much money on plants, then get depressed and kill them all… this time around I’m trying to propagate or trade plants, instead of buying (i’m failing already)
I was in your boat until I amassed over 200 plants. When I moved, I had to give away half of them, and many of the remaining ones died from neglect during depressive episodes. That said, I don't think I wasted anything. Plants taught me the value of consistent daily care, how incremental growth goes a long way, why we need to prune and let go, and to be more in touch with my own needs.
"freeing" animals from pet stores and zoos is fucked up, but sending cops to handle the animals while armed and looking for a guy is irresponsible too.
The end of the news channel bit saying “don’t worry, all the animals were fine” but nothing about what happened with the human involved is .. very telling
I will say I’m not an MTG guy but as an ADHD person I appreciate the weekly hyper focus update. My hyper focuses often revolve around perfecting various dishes. People will complement something I make and I’m mentally like thank you this is the only thing I’ve been eating for 3 weeks. Or me getting into 3D printing and using pliers to twist metal strands into fun sculpted shapes.
A lot of people don't know that in British English, it's spelled aluminium as well as being pronounced that way. Likewise in US English, it's spelled aluminum and pronounced that way.
As a subscriber of the British English aluminium what gets me is that USA saw fit to take the I from that element but left it in all the others, like is consistency not important? Why not helum, lithum, berylum etc? What did aluminium do to have it's I torn out of its socket?
@@drabacusPlays So based on a Google search, the British dude that identified it first called it "alumiun" then he changed his spelling to "aluminum". But, academics in Britain preferred "aluminium" as, like you said, it matches the other elements. Both were used in the US, but eventually manufacturers went with the "aluminum" spelling, while many academics and researchers continue with "aluminium".
Nah don't listen to this other guy, I played a magic game once and didn't get addicted. Until I played a game a year later and that was 14 years ago please help
One of us. One of us. Legitimately though, it's a hobby you will probably never truly escape. I haven't played consistently for like 6 or 7 years at this point and I'm literally still finding random magic cards in my house, and have been trying to find the time and money to go check out the card shop in the new town I moved to a couple months ago, just as an easy way to make some new friends. It's kind of cool because it's a hobby that so many players put down after a bit but still end up coming back to years later, over and over. It's a great game and can help build community if you're struggling at all with making friends or finding casual, consistent ways to socialize.
I really appreciated Jordan’s description of psychosis from the perspective of someone with bipolar disorder and has possibly dealt with it first hand. I feel like that was the first description of psychosis that ACTUALLY made sense to me

Explaination of Carthago Delenda est, Zucc took latin in highschool (we had the same teacher, different decades tho) and i think he was a member of certamen which is a national highschool latin quiz bowl. The phrase kinda became a meme for the club, i dont totally know why, but its the phrase that Cato used to end every speech with as a mic drop kind of moment (the speech didnt have to have anything to do with Carthage, he just hated carthage and would add it to the end of literally anything)
Yeah, it’s like saying ‘loose the dogs of war’ or ‘let’s get ready to rumble’ or any total warfare, kill your enemies kind of thing to end your speech. So it makes sense for a team sport, but it also makes sense for a billionaire capitalist lol
My favorite epic Latin quotes are: “Alea iacta est” and “Rana in aqua est, agricola.” That agricola had been working long and hard in the field and the girl walked by with water and he asked for the water and she said no and he asked why and that was her answer. Latin textbook, 1983. First declension, baby.
This Magic: the Gathering arc gives me an out of body experience. I was playing competitively a decade ago and worked at a card shop that had a social media presence and did tournament grinding. One of my exes is in play design at WOTC now after moving up from pro player status. (Unless he's management now or something.) A number of people in my area frequently made it into invitationals or played at the pro tour back in the day. I usually kept to cube and EDH and registered for tournaments with the intention of 0-2 dropping and hanging out with friends in other states. Could be you guys next.
To Jordan, who will never read this: Sir Humphry Davy, who first identified the element aluminum, called it aluminum. A bunch of other chemists decided that didn't jive well with the other elements that end in '-ium' and said 'it should be aluminium'. Humphry said "No, that's stup¡d! We can call it alumium." (That's a direct quote) The other chemists said 'no' to alumium, so Humphry just kept on calling it aluminum.
Lol yeah we called ours "eggy toast" actually, with the lil toast round, sometimes I would turn it into a soft cinnamon toast circle 😂🍞🍳 That segment tingled my brainstuffs

27:20 I'm a grad student studying French, and I can answer this question! After the Norman Conquest of 1066, French became the presiding language of the courts and among the English nobility. French was seen as the language of wealth, education, and refinement, while English was a language for the commoners. Almost a thousand years later, this implicit idea has survived in most English speaking cultures across the world. This is why in English, there are often two ways of saying things: the common version, often with germanic roots, and the fancier/elevated version, usually with French or Latin roots. For example, you can go on a "walk", but it's much nicer to tell people you're going on a "promenade". You can "lead" a group of people, but it's understood to be more serious if you "command" them. This is why even today, throwing in a French phrase here or there adds a certain "je ne sais quoi" to your writing. By a similar token, parts of the world that were historically colonized by the British see the British accent as the most attractive/educated way to speak English, because for centuries that was the language of the ruling class and high society.
