Right before Jojo Siwa did a big rebrand and started being annoying in interviews, Jojo and her mom was credibly accused of abuse by members of XOMG Pop!, a girl group they were running. I think a lot of what she is doing is to ensure the bad press directed towards her and her mom is about her being weird and arrogant, instead of being abusive and cruel.
yes a lot more people need to be aware of this. unfortunately i think the way abby treated jojo made her think it’s ok to talk to her own group that way, but it’s still not okay what they’re accused of.

Ever since then I’ve just felt like there must be something so off and disturbing in her family. Something isn very screwy with her parents.
idk about anyone else but my problem with jojo isn't her being "cringe" or having her transitional phase from catering to predominantly kids. it's her repeated ableism (the spina bifida girl), classism (the grueling work conditions she puts literal kids through as a Millionaire), and victim blaming (looking down on her teammates for not coming back to the dance moms reunion due to their trauma) that her and her mother perpetuate repeatedly. i understand she's 21 and young, but being a person that has that responsibility and that platform and condoning these things is just inexcusable, because you shouldn't have to be 21 years old to realize that telling a disabled teen to stick a maxipad onto their bleeding belly button to keep dancing before their spinal surgery is an objectively scummy thing to do. she has also attributed the colleen balinger situation to her being "cancelled with no proof" which is also baffling

also she recently has not only defended colleen ballinger but also minimized victims accusations towards her. it’s really sad too because jojo seems to be a victim of grooming in her own way- she has been groomed to believe that being overworked, to the point of hurting your body, and taking verbal/emotional abuse from people in positions of authority over her is normal if she wants to be successful. i feel like her being desensitized to a lot of the very many complex traumatic/abusive things she has experienced contributes to her thinking that grooming is only sexual and you cannot be groomed to take on other forms of abuse.

I was telling my husband about how I almost joined the Navy to pay for college because I got a decent score on the ASVAB when it was administered in my high school health class, and my husband was like "hold up, they had recruiters administering a test in high school" and then I had to explain how I went to a low income school in a rural area and military recruiters are just flocking those schools like vultures to be like "hey we know you're broke as fuck, how about you join the military"
At my school they had recruiters coming into ROTC classes as soon as freshman year. The recruiters also had us fill out a form on what type of jobs we would want.
Yeah, I went to two different high schools. The first was in more of a rural/impoverished area, the second was a rich kids “up in the hills” type school. (I only got into the second school because I was technically within their zone lol). At my first high school there were recruiters all the time. They had this pull up bar set up by the main office so often that people would only comment on when they WEREN’T there. The recruiters would often speak at assemblies, they’d go into classes and give presentations. And then when I moved I noticed the new school didn’t have that. For like one week out of the year there’d be a recruiter who was out of the way in a hall that not a lot of people passed through with fliers. And then the recruiter was gone. Looking back the difference was stark, and now I know why.
Karma was absolutely released to cover up the fact Jojoand her mom were being called out (credibly) for abusing members of a pop/dance group they were running, one of the members having a physical illness that they had no empathy for and it became *very* dangerous because of how the two treated her. It was becoming a big thing but the moment she released Karma, the internet completely forgot about it to dunk on her, which was likely her intent because her team and her probably are well aware that the internet will move on from one thing to another in a snap, if the other thing is incredibly cringy.

I work for my local public defenders office and have so many horror stories about mistreatment of unhoused people at the hands of the cops. I have also unfortunately heard with my own ears someone saying that if they went to jail at least they'd be housed and fed. ("three hots and a cot" if you're unfamiliar with the phrase) It's super depressing. We need to do better by our unhoused population. We need to recognize them as part of our community in need of support, not vagrants to be exiled. A key part of this is syringe access programs and supervised injection sites. Drug addiction should not be a barrier to housing and trying to get one's life on track.
On the homeless thing, I think something could also be said about how quick people are to dehumanize them on social media, specifically when it comes to homeless people owning animals. Its always something like "Oh that poor dog..." and never actual concern for ANOTHER HUMAN BEING?

I often very regularly think about how i may be one of the only transgender or nonbinary person this cisgender person knows or may ever know, and how that may reflect on the community or how they view queer people going forward, but also stay in line from my fiancé’s reminders that i could never speak for all trans or nonbinary people so speak at most of your own experience first and their assumptions will be as it may. Ava had no illicit intentions with a minor. She is being purposely targeted as a famous transgender woman and all of this is a very big case of mass trans misogyny, no hate to you of course but she is currently being used as a scapegoat for transphobia. Her so called "victim" has already made Multiple statements saying this is all lies, and the fact that so many people are believing the accusers before doing any sort of research is very disheartening. She is innocent. She just had the misfortune of being a public figure as well as being trans.
It's easy to have empathy for Jojo, but we do need to remember that her and her mom are responsible for the abuse of the children in the dance group they started. A lot of people speculate that the dramatic rebrand is her trying to take attention off of that issue. Shes also very publically friends with both James Charles and Collen Ballinger. Shes young but shes also an adult that shouldn't have put children in danger or support groomers

Like it's seriously nightmarish to think of how being raised by one of those dance moms might affect someone. It's hard to avoid all empathy for her when you know how these situations can impact kids growing into adults. Sometimes you'll do anything to try and gain approval from an abuser, and while that absolutely doesn't EXCUSE harmful behavior, it does cast an interesting light on it. I'm not even necessarily saying there is or has been any form of abuse going on from her mom, just that she VERY much seems a product of her environment. Especially on the being friends with problematic ppl bit- she has been friends with people who have been predatory to kids SINCE SHE WAS A KID. I feel like that HAS to speak for itself, right???? Like, again, environment seems kinda toxic for anyone growing up like that, ABSOLUTELY not surprising she is the way she is. @@Mcraw2603 I think probably for me it has to do with my personal measurements regarding 'bad people' which are a little different than most people. Almost all of the worst people are 'a product of their environment' and not considering them a bad person doesn't mean removing all accountability for their actions. I honestly just find 'bad person' to be super restrictive and arbitrary generally- people change for the better and worse all of the time. I absolutely believe actions should be taken to limit some people's harm to others and that those people should be made to face their mistakes. I just don't know if a catch all label for ppl who did bad things ever is even all that useful, aside from third party satisfaction and superiority. There are a million reasons she could've done that, and none of them make such an awful thing okay. However, her being fundamentally morally defective just seems like a bad conclusion to jump to. That's how I feel the term 'bad person' is thrown around often.

Regarding parasocial relationships, I've tried to more actively acknowledge when a creator does/says something I don't agree with (even minor stuff, not inherently problematic or anything). I think an important part of maintaining distance from creators to be able to recognize that you don't always align with them, and that's okay, and you can still enjoy content while acknowledging you and they are different people.
If I see a man walking behind me and it's late at night, I will DELIBERATELY fake having to stop for a sec (or I will slow down) so that he can walk in front where I can see him - it feels safer and I can always stop/slow down again and put more distance between us.

I'm not trying to equate my experience with the ones shared here, just sharing my own story. I’m a white, Jewish guy, 32, and back in the early 2000s, all I wanted to listen to was rap music. Country and rock were just background noise from my parents. My reality back then was simple: I was a nerdy kid who loved rap. But in my racist town, everyone around me-friends, adults-assumed I was trying to be a "wangster." That label made me question myself. Why couldn’t I just be a nerdy kid who liked rap? Why did loving rap have to mean anything more? This confusion messed with my identity. I spent my teen years wearing baggy clothes because everyone said that’s who I was supposed to be. It took until my early 20s to rediscover who I really am: a nerdy dude who loves hip-hop culture. To top it off, I was in Santee, California-a town so racist it was nicknamed Clantee. I was the only Jewish kid around, and I caught hate for that too. I was jumped twice for being Jewish. Whenever I’d bring my binder of CDs-especially Ludacris's Chicken-n-Beer album-I’d hear horrible comments like "no one wants to listen to that N- shit," and the silence from everyone else made me feel isolated. It made me constantly question, "why am I so weird?" Now, I know it doesn't have to mean anything more than that. We do a lot of projecting, and it impacts others deeply. As a society, we need to look inward more before making definitive statements about what certain qualities mean about someone else. Despite the negativity, those experiences made me acutely aware of racism from a spectator's perspective. As an angsty teen, I thought I could take on anyone, so I got into a lot of fights over it. Now, I’m more tactful, but I still have zero tolerance for that kind of stuff. It molded who I am, for better or worse. It feels worthwhile to be more aware of my impact on others than my peers ever were.
The main thing about trying to come off as safe around women is this: There is nothing you can do that manipulative men looking for a victim cannot also do

I went to a wildlife camp that was very military style and I remember crying because I wanted to call my Parents to take me home but I knew they wouldn’t. They took our phones at the beginning of camp but I was able to hide mine. One girl hid her phone and was able to call her parents and they took her home and I was so jealous. I didn’t know where I was going or what was going to happen. Most of the other girls there were very weird and intense and I had never shot a gun before and was so scared. We had punishments and a grueling schedule and I went home with a different outlook on life. Whenever I meet other people who experienced that camp it’s a bonding moment, and I keep up with a lot of them because you can’t not get close when you are in these conditions, but the thing is most people who went through it either went into the military or fell into addiction and it was a second source of tragedy in my college years since most of us ended up going to the same college.

Strangeaeons did a really good video about the “i’m not like other girls” phenomenon, and i really like how she puts it because the idea of what is “girly” or what a stereotypical girl looks like is not an actual person. Every girl has unique interests and depth and even when they do appear to fit that “other girl” stereotype, seeing them as nothing more than that is being dismissive of the things that make them a 3 dimensional person or treating the interests you *can* see them taking part in as inherently lesser.

On the Cadet Police Academy section: as a part of No Child Left behind, schools have to grant military recruiters free access to students or the school's federal funding will be revoked. So yes, if you go to school in the US they will absolutely try to recruit you. The aggressiveness of it depends on your demographics and socioeconomic status, but I would be surprised if any american student didn't at least have them show up with the pull up bars and clipboards full of info/ sign up sheets. They came to my school once or twice a month, and we had a decent amount of kids in JROTC from sixth grade onwards.

Yeah, I grew up in NYC as a Colombian young man with some black in my roots and could pass for Mediterranean when I was younger. It's similar (but a little different) to how people will be so supportive of a creator with a bigger build, until they do something immoral then suddenly it's so easy for everyone to comment on their appearance negatively.. Inherently though, when people think it's suddenly okay to misgender, body-shame in any way, or even start questioning validity to that person's identity because they've done super terrible things that are completely unrelated, that's just wrong and is clearly coming from a bitter place..

Dear god. Dear god. Dear god. Its been 6 years but I hated the Cadet Police Academy. I call that my piglet era, it was a weeklong bootcamp for kids, which at the age, traumatizes them. I quit after attending the academy 4 summers in a row. I hate that part of my life, honestly.
The last year I went, I met someone; we bonded over the dislike of the camp and we clicked. We've been together almost 6 years and we won't be doing this to our kids.
Those Cadet Academy videos brought me marching band flashbacks. Nothing that extreme happened but I could tell our coaches got some sort of power trip out of yelling at and discipling us. Not to mention that the struggles we TEENAGED students faced in school and our personal lives, especially during Covid, were completely dismissed as "excuses". I'm glad that's all behind me now.
I want to say this is the most frustrating time to be a twitter user, but to be honest I can't remember the last time it wasn't completely miserable and inflammatory.

When I was younger I was the definition of the “not like other girls” pick me, then turned out to be a trans dude, and I’ve sorta noticed the “pick me” mindset evolved with my identifying as trans. Like I’ve gotten really hyper-masculine the longer I’ve identified as trans out of fear I’d be seen as a woman or even just mildly feminine like it’s a bad thing. I’ve caught myself sorta judging other more comfortably feminine trans dudes even though I know for a fact you don’t have to be super masculine to be a dude?? I have no idea how to help this situation either cause I know only a few other trans dudes and I’m scared they’ll rlly judge me for my fear of being feminine and just see me as misogynistic even though I feel incredibly guilty about it. I get so dysphoric over not even outright “feminine” things like being mildly bad at SOME video games or not understanding some tones since I’m autistic. Really hope I get over this soon since I am just a teenager and have like ZERO confidence and little support from any adults in my life.
its completely understandable as a trans guy to want to distance yourself from femininity, coming from a trans guy who used to do exactly that. as i've gotten older ive just gradually become more comfortable with fem things in my private life, i dont know if id be comfortable expressing most of it around strangers who could misgender me but at the same time, its important to be honest and authentic with yourself. some cis guys like fem stuff and thats perfectly fine, just as is the case with trans guys. the things you like and enjoy, and your gender expression, can be completely unrelated to identity and even if you already know that it can take some time to process and be comfortable with the thought and fully confident and comfortable with how you express yourself. sorry if thats a lot and doesnt make total sense, its very stream of conscious

As a Brit, I can report that military cadet camp was a huge thing in my small town, and that loads of people in my school would brag about being an air force cadet, navy cadet etc. They let teenagers shoot real guns and fly planes while definitely indoctrinating them to join the military at the same time... I just took it for granted as a regular after school activity while I was surrounded by that, but now looking back it was very weird...
I understand not wanting to speak on Jojo Sewa because shes growing and most of what you see is just her being kinda cringe, however, there are clips of her concerts (which children go to) of her putting her hand inside her pants. So i think that crosses the limit.
There are many reasons not to like or support her but kids being at her concerts isn't one of them. it's simply not her problem or responsibility that kids like her music if she's not catering to kids, which she no longer is. They tried to shame Lil Nas X for the same thing just because kids liked Old Town Road but it's just not fair to subject adults to kid rules they don't want just because kids like something they made. I’m a cis woman, and I do find it most unsettling if someone is behind me and staying steadily behind me. Someone speeding up to pass might be scary in the brief moment of noticing someone speeding up, but once they pass you the threat feels resolved. I’m also 5’10” myself, so there aren’t many human beings who are significantly taller than me, and I know that makes a big difference. General advice, though, is don’t have headphones in/on while walking in public. It actually can be dangerous.

Jordan's story about being resistant towards befriending/embracing another black/mixed person within a predominantly yte friend group is fairly common; it speaks to a larger societal issue: there can only be one. There are so many stories about black people being denied opportunities/positions because companies "already had a black person." There are stories about black employees'/professionals' growing anxieties over newly hired black employees; they automatically assumed that the new hire(s) were their replacement. Sadly, in too many cases, they were right.
What's crazy is that I have a meta-fear of if I make it obvious that I'm nervous in front of a man, if they are insecure about it, they may confront me about it out of spite. You'd be shocked at the amount of "what, do I scare you?" encounters I've had. Women cannot exist ANYWHERE.
I think one thing about Jojo Siwa compared to other former child stars is that she grew up on reality tv, where literally any attention is good for views. I think reality tv encourages drama and behaving in outrageous ways because that's what drives interest and views. Reality tv thrives on people behaving awfully. Whereas a lot of child stars grew up on Disney and Nick where they had to be squeaky clean and family friendly, and so they probably grew up insanely image conscious as a result of the network's pressure. I feel like maybe Jojo Siwa and her team around her are continuing with the idea that any attention is good attention, there's no such thing as bad press etc. But that's really keeping her from transitioning into a serious artist, you can't really sustain a career with continuing to do outrageous things, people get bored. There also doesn't seem to be any artistic vision or authenticity behind what she's doing, which I think people want. Even with someone like Miley Cyrus, she did sing a lot of songs about her exes and break ups and stuff which is at least relatable to most people. I think you can do outrageous things if people recognise some kind of artistic vision or authenticity behind it. Someone like Lil Nas X has done a lot of out there stuff, but he has a strong artistic vision and he has also spoken up about a lot of things like being a gay black man who started out in country music. He's also really up front and acknowledges that he does do stuff for attention, which feels a lot more authentic to most people. Even Paris Hilton has managed to be taken seriously, despite previously being seen as a blonde airhead, because she's spoken up about her past traumas and fought really hard to amplify voices of people who have been abused at wilderness camps like she was. Whereas Jojo Siwa hasn't really given the public anything to like about her? It's not even like she needs the money, she made millions as a child, so her whole "rebrand" just comes off as an inauthentic, greedy grab for more money and attention.
The fact that there are men who are understanding of the fact that we have to be on guard all the time is nice. You can’t make sure that everyone is going to feel safe. But crossing the street and walking on the other side is definitely a good thing to do, that will make most women feel slightly less threatened. I’m a college age girl and I live in a city and frequently walk alone at night. Here is what I’ve found makes me feel safer. 1. Acknowledging me, greeting me, waving to me, etc. Potential attackers are unlikely to draw attention to themselves so you remember less details about them. 2. Crossing the street. This gesture indicates to me that you’re aware of my cautiousness and are actively trying to make me more comfortable. 3. Being or pretending to be on the phone. If you’re talking it up/chatting, I’m likely not going to perceive you as threatening. This is a trick I use myself to make me less susceptible to assault, but it works both ways. It makes the situation less tense. 4. Body language. If you’re closed off, tense, and hard to read (IE. Hood up, hands in pockets, head down), it makes me uneasy. But if you’re relaxed, open, and casual (IE. Hands where I can see them, head/eyes ahead of you), it calms my nerves a bit.
Aww, as a woman who definitely keeps alert when walking (esp when there’s a guy) I feel really bad to think that it makes you guys feel scary. I have to keep that alertness with any stranger because you never know, but I feel sad to think they can feel my fear. Right before Jojo Siwa did a big rebrand and started being annoying in interviews, Jojo and her mom was credibly accused of abuse by members of XOMG Pop!, a girl group they were running. I think a lot of what she is doing is to ensure the bad press directed towards her and her mom is about her being weird and arrogant, instead of being abusive and cruel.

Yeah, I went to two different high schools. The first was in more of a rural/impoverished area, the second was a rich kids “up in the hills” type school. (I only got into the second school because I was technically within their zone lol). At my first high school there were recruiters all the time. They had this pull up bar set up by the main office so often that people would only comment on when they WEREN’T there. The recruiters would often speak at assemblies, they’d go into classes and give presentations. And then when I moved I noticed the new school didn’t have that. For like one week out of the year there’d be a recruiter who was out of the way in a hall that not a lot of people passed through with fliers. And then the recruiter was gone. Looking back the difference was stark, and now I know why.

I work for my local public defenders office and have so many horror stories about mistreatment of unhoused people at the hands of the cops. I have also unfortunately heard with my own ears someone saying that if they went to jail at least they'd be housed and fed. ("three hots and a cot" if you're unfamiliar with the phrase) It's super depressing.
We need to do better by our unhoused population. We need to recognize them as part of our community in need of support, not vagrants to be exiled. A key part of this is syringe access programs and supervised injection sites. Drug addiction should not be a barrier to housing and trying to get one's life on track.

Ava had no illicit intentions with a minor. She is being purposely targeted as a famous transgender woman and all of this is a very big case of mass trans misogyny, no hate to you of course but she is currently being used as a scapegoat for transphobia. Her so called "victim" has already made Multiple statements saying this is all lies, and the fact that so many people are believing the accusers before doing any sort of research is very disheartening. She is innocent. She just had the misfortune of being a public figure as well as being trans.
It's easy to have empathy for Jojo, but we do need to remember that her and her mom are responsible for the abuse of the children in the dance group they started. A lot of people speculate that the dramatic rebrand is her trying to take attention off of that issue. Shes also very publically friends with both James Charles and Collen Ballinger. Shes young but shes also an adult that shouldn't have put children in danger or support groomers

Like it's seriously nightmarish to think of how being raised by one of those dance moms might affect someone. It's hard to avoid all empathy for her when you know how these situations can impact kids growing into adults. Sometimes you'll do anything to try and gain approval from an abuser, and while that absolutely doesn't EXCUSE harmful behavior, it does cast an interesting light on it. I'm not even necessarily saying there is or has been any form of abuse going on from her mom, just that she VERY much seems a product of her environment. Especially on the being friends with problematic ppl bit- she has been friends with people who have been predatory to kids SINCE SHE WAS A KID. I feel like that HAS to speak for itself, right???? Almost all of the worst people are 'a product of their environment' and not considering them a bad person doesn't mean removing all accountability for their actions. I honestly just find 'bad person' to be super restrictive and arbitrary generally- people change for the better and worse all of the time. I absolutely believe actions should be taken to limit some people's harm to others and that those people should be made to face their mistakes. I just don't know if a catch all label for ppl who did bad things ever is even all that useful, aside from third party satisfaction and superiority. There are a million reasons she could've done that, and none of them make such an awful thing okay. However, her being fundamentally morally defective just seems like a bad conclusion to jump to. Regarding parasocial relationships, I've tried to more actively acknowledge when a creator does/says something I don't agree with (even minor stuff, not inherently problematic or anything). I think an important part of maintaining distance from creators to be able to recognize that you don't always align with them, and that's okay, and you can still enjoy content while acknowledging you and they are different people.
If I see a man walking behind me and it's late at night, I will DELIBERATELY fake having to stop for a sec (or I will slow down) so that he can walk in front where I can see him - it feels safer and I can always stop/slow down again and put more distance between us.

I'm not trying to equate my experience with the ones shared here, just sharing my own story. I’m a white, Jewish guy, 32, and back in the early 2000s, all I wanted to listen to was rap music. Country and rock were just background noise from my parents. My reality back then was simple: I was a nerdy kid who loved rap. But in my racist town, everyone around me-friends, adults-assumed I was trying to be a "wangster." That label made me question myself. Why couldn’t I just be a nerdy kid who liked rap? Why did loving rap have to mean anything more?
This confusion messed with my identity. I spent my teen years wearing baggy clothes because everyone said that’s who I was supposed to be. It took until my early 20s to rediscover who I really am: a nerdy dude who loves hip-hop culture. To top it off, I was in Santee, California-a town so racist it was nicknamed Clantee. I was the only Jewish kid around, and I caught hate for that too. I was jumped twice for being Jewish.
Whenever I’d bring my binder of CDs-especially Ludacris's Chicken-n-Beer album-I’d hear horrible comments like "no one wants to listen to that N- shit," and the silence from everyone else made me feel isolated. It made me constantly question, "why am I so weird?" Now, I know it doesn't have to mean anything more than that. We do a lot of projecting, and it impacts others deeply. As a society, we need to look inward more before making definitive statements about what certain qualities mean about someone else.
Despite the negativity, those experiences made me acutely aware of racism from a spectator's perspective. As an angsty teen, I thought I could take on anyone, so I got into a lot of fights over it. Now, I’m more tactful, but I still have zero tolerance for that kind of stuff. It molded who I am, for better or worse. It feels worthwhile to be more aware of my impact on others than my peers ever were.

Stories were coming out of her and her mom being (allegedly) ableist and abusive to these girls. Ppl speculate that the cringe rebrand stuff is a deflection.

I went to a wildlife camp that was very military style and I remember crying because I wanted to call my Parents to take me home but I knew they wouldn’t. They took our phones at the beginning of camp but I was able to hide mine. One girl hid her phone and was able to call her parents and they took her home and I was so jealous. I didn’t know where I was going or what was going to happen. Most of the other girls there were very weird and intense and I had never shot a gun before and was so scared. We had punishments and a grueling schedule and I went home with a different outlook on life. Whenever I meet other people who experienced that camp it’s a bonding moment, and I keep up with a lot of them because you can’t not get close when you are in these conditions, but the thing is most people who went through it either went into the military or fell into addiction and it was a second source of tragedy in my college years since most of us ended up going to the same college.
I dont have anything worthwhile to add to it but what Jordan was saying about the loke false essentialisation of authentic self was a great thread of thought.

Strangeaeons did a really good video about the “i’m not like other girls” phenomenon, and i really like how she puts it because the idea of what is “girly” or what a stereotypical girl looks like is not an actual person. Every girl has unique interests and depth and even when they do appear to fit that “other girl” stereotype, seeing them as nothing more than that is being dismissive of the things that make them a 3 dimensional person or treating the interests you *can* see them taking part in as inherently lesser.

On the Cadet Police Academy section: as a part of No Child Left behind, schools have to grant military recruiters free access to students or the school's federal funding will be revoked.
So yes, if you go to school in the US they will absolutely try to recruit you. The aggressiveness of it depends on your demographics and socioeconomic status, but I would be surprised if any american student didn't at least have them show up with the pull up bars and clipboards full of info/ sign up sheets. They came to my school once or twice a month, and we had a decent amount of kids in JROTC from sixth grade onwards.
the jrotc kids were the biggest bootlickers. like imagine being gen z and not being disillusioned with the united shitholes of america.

I feel this sm. It's similar (but a little different) to how people will be so supportive of a creator with a bigger build, until they do something immoral then suddenly it's so easy for everyone to comment on their appearance negatively..

Its been 6 years but I hated the Cadet Police Academy.
I call that my piglet era, it was a weeklong bootcamp for kids, which at the age, traumatizes them.
I quit after attending the academy 4 summers in a row. I hate that part of my life, honestly.
The last year I went, I met someone; we bonded over the dislike of the camp and we clicked. We've been together almost 6 years and we won't be doing this to our kids.
Those Cadet Academy videos brought me marching band flashbacks. Nothing that extreme happened but I could tell our coaches got some sort of power trip out of yelling at and discipling us. Not to mention that the struggles we TEENAGED students faced in school and our personal lives, especially during Covid, were completely dismissed as "excuses". I'm glad that's all behind me now.

When I was younger I was the definition of the “not like other girls” pick me, then turned out to be a trans dude, and I’ve sorta noticed the “pick me” mindset evolved with my identifying as trans.
Like I’ve gotten really hyper-masculine the longer I’ve identified as trans out of fear I’d be seen as a woman or even just mildly feminine like it’s a bad thing. I’ve caught myself sorta judging other more comfortably feminine trans dudes even though I know for a fact you don’t have to be super masculine to be a dude?? I have no idea how to help this situation either cause I know only a few other trans dudes and I’m scared they’ll rlly judge me for my fear of being feminine and just see me as misogynistic even though I feel incredibly guilty about it. I get so dysphoric over not even outright “feminine” things like being mildly bad at SOME video games or not understanding some tones since I’m autistic.
Really hope I get over this soon since I am just a teenager and have like ZERO confidence and little support from any adults in my life.
its completely understandable as a trans guy to want to distance yourself from femininity, coming from a trans guy who used to do exactly that. as i've gotten older ive just gradually become more comfortable with fem things in my private life, i dont know if id be comfortable expressing most of it around strangers who could misgender me but at the same time, its important to be honest and authentic with yourself. some cis guys like fem stuff and thats perfectly fine, just as is the case with trans guys. the things you like and enjoy, and your gender expression, can be completely unrelated to identity and even if you already know that it can take some time to process and be comfortable with the thought and fully confident and comfortable with how you express yourself. sorry if thats a lot and doesnt make total sense, its very stream of conscious

As a Brit, I can report that military cadet camp was a huge thing in my small town, and that loads of people in my school would brag about being an air force cadet, navy cadet etc. They let teenagers shoot real guns and fly planes while definitely indoctrinating them to join the military at the same time... I just took it for granted as a regular after school activity while I was surrounded by that, but now looking back it was very weird...

I understand not wanting to speak on Jojo Sewa because shes growing and most of what you see is just her being kinda cringe, however, there are clips of her concerts (which children go to) of her putting her hand inside her pants. So i think that crosses the limit.
There are many reasons not to like or support her but kids being at her concerts isn't one of them. it's simply not her problem or responsibility that kids like her music if she's not catering to kids, which she no longer is. They tried to shame Lil Nas X for the same thing just because kids liked Old Town Road but it's just not fair to subject adults to kid rules they don't want just because kids like something they made. Out of all the things she deserves criticism for, I still think she has a right to act like a 21yo instead of a 12yo and the 12yos present do not get to dictate that.

I’m a cis woman, and I do find it most unsettling if someone is behind me and staying steadily behind me. Someone speeding up to pass might be scary in the brief moment of noticing someone speeding up, but once they pass you the threat feels resolved.
I’m also 5’10” myself, so there aren’t many human beings who are significantly taller than me, and I know that makes a big difference.
General advice, though, is don’t have headphones in/on while walking in public. It actually can be dangerous.

Jordan's story about being resistant towards befriending/embracing another black/mixed person within a predominantly yte friend group is fairly common; it speaks to a larger societal issue: there can only be one. There are so many stories about black people being denied opportunities/positions because companies "already had a black person." There are stories about black employees'/professionals' growing anxieties over newly hired black employees; they automatically assumed that the new hire(s) were their replacement. Sadly, in too many cases, they were right.
What's crazy is that I have a meta-fear of if I make it obvious that I'm nervous in front of a man, if they are insecure about it, they may confront me about it out of spite. You'd be shocked at the amount of "what, do I scare you?" encounters I've had. Women cannot exist ANYWHERE.

I think one thing about Jojo Siwa compared to other former child stars is that she grew up on reality tv, where literally any attention is good for views. I think reality tv encourages drama and behaving in outrageous ways because that's what drives interest and views. Reality tv thrives on people behaving awfully. Whereas a lot of child stars grew up on Disney and Nick where they had to be squeaky clean and family friendly, and so they probably grew up insanely image conscious as a result of the network's pressure. I feel like maybe Jojo Siwa and her team around her are continuing with the idea that any attention is good attention, there's no such thing as bad press etc. But that's really keeping her from transitioning into a serious artist, you can't really sustain a career with continuing to do outrageous things, people get bored.
There also doesn't seem to be any artistic vision or authenticity behind what she's doing, which I think people want. Even with someone like Miley Cyrus, she did sing a lot of songs about her exes and break ups and stuff which is at least relatable to most people. I think you can do outrageous things if people recognise some kind of artistic vision or authenticity behind it. Someone like Lil Nas X has done a lot of out there stuff, but he has a strong artistic vision and he has also spoken up about a lot of things like being a gay black man who started out in country music. He's also really up front and acknowledges that he does do stuff for attention, which feels a lot more authentic to most people. Even Paris Hilton has managed to be taken seriously, despite previously being seen as a blonde airhead, because she's spoken up about her past traumas and fought really hard to amplify voices of people who have been abused at wilderness camps like she was.
Whereas Jojo Siwa hasn't really given the public anything to like about her? It's not even like she needs the money, she made millions as a child, so her whole "rebrand" just comes off as an inauthentic, greedy grab for more money and attention.
The fact that there are men who are understanding of the fact that we have to be on guard all the time is nice. You can’t make sure that everyone is going to feel safe. But crossing the street and walking on the other side is definitely a good thing to do, that will make most women feel slightly less threatened. Also because I’m a white woman I worry that when the random man I’m avoiding on the street alone at night, happens to be a poc they’ll think I’m racist. I hope people don’t assume that like nooo I’m afraid of you because you’re a man I don’t gaf about what colour you are.
I’m a college age girl and I live in a city and frequently walk alone at night. Here is what I’ve found makes me feel safer.
1. Acknowledging me, greeting me, waving to me, etc. Potential attackers are unlikely to draw attention to themselves so you remember less details about them.
2. Crossing the street. This gesture indicates to me that you’re aware of my cautiousness and are actively trying to make me more comfortable.
3. Being or pretending to be on the phone. If you’re talking it up/chatting, I’m likely not going to perceive you as threatening. This is a trick I use myself to make me less susceptible to assault, but it works both ways. It makes the situation less tense.
4. Body language. If you’re closed off, tense, and hard to read (IE. Hood up, hands in pockets, head down), it makes me uneasy. But if you’re relaxed, open, and casual (IE. Hands where I can see them, head/eyes ahead of you), it calms my nerves a bit.
Aww, as a woman who definitely keeps alert when walking (esp when there’s a guy) I feel really bad to think that it makes you guys feel scary. I have to keep that alertness with any stranger because you never know, but I feel sad to think they can feel my fear. I especially always feel bad if it’s a black guy because I worry my anxiety will come off as racism :(
