  • Hi all Rho here! Today we continue our focus on the Lord of Drakes, with a discussion on his relationship with his brother Magnus the Red. How despite their differences it appears he and Vulkan established a fond relationship.
    General Spoiler Warning to begin as the events we are discussing today are from across the Warhammer 40,000 universe. As always I really recommend you read the stories for yourself first. As that's the best way to enjoy the lore for yourself! Without spoilers!

    Few Primarchs desired a better future for the ordinary humans as Magnus and Vulkan. Both wanted a peaceful and enlightened post-crusade humanity

    The confrontation between Magnus and Vulkan at the throne was painful and you could feel the heartbreak from both as the Emperor drew a line Magnus could not cross.

      I can see Vulcan ribbing Magnus back with a heavy, though oddly tender clap on the back of one of his pauldrons along with a jesting remark about getting sick of the smell of parchment.

    The story of Magnus is the perfect version of the "Lost Son" story. He wants, so very much, to just go home... However, equally, he "knows" that he never can. He's wrong, but that is why it's perfect.

      Well the Emperor did give him an impossible ultimatum, a choice between his father and his sons. Ultimatums always backfire. If your father made you choose, would you abandon your children?

The entire exchange was revealed to be a Tzeentchian lie; what actually happened was that his last uncorrupted shard burst in asking for forgiveness and the Emperor said No because its too late. Echoes of Eternity has revealed just how much Tzeentch has warped Magnus's perception.

      ​@@cursedkei66 not exactly. We don't know what truly happened because as people have said before Vulcan cannot know what the fuck happened there. Not to mention Emperor amd Malcore are known to change certain memories in Primarchs before. My theory is both are sort of true. When Magnus refused the OG offer Emperor made another plan that required Magnus to think the first one was never real to begin with.

    I don't think Magnus and Vulkan are that different, Magnus was probably the next most humanitarian of the primarchs? Prosporo was utopian and humans and Astartes lived and learned together?

      The Khan was also pretty chill with normal people and went against Dorn's battle plans to protect more people, even when Sanguinius warned Jaghatai that saving this many lives would put him in danger.
      I think Sanguinius was also nice to simple men and women, but I can't think of any particular event that showcased it.

      Vulcan was kind and humble while magnus was kind but not humble at all. He kept on when warned by many. I’m a magnus fan but there are many moments in the books showcasing that trait.
      As for leman whopping magnus…..had some considerable help against a guy who was reluctant.

      @@albertor.6635 Vulkan's work at the forge was about art, and crafting a masterpiece as much as it was technology. Cawl believes the human being can be replaced entirely and uses tech for efficiency purposes. I don't imagine they would actually get along that well, since Vulkan's sympathies are VERY human. Roboute doesn't even trust Cawl that much.

    Its hard to believe that someone like Vulkan isnt the most beloved amongst his brothers. Perhaps his down to earth nature rubbed some of his brothers the wrong way? Its quite ironic that the one brother that can tear you to pieaces with his bear hands is the softest of them all.

      Primarchs had the egos and dramatic personalities of Homeric Heroes. Someone down to earth and with a "plain" personality (for a super human demigod) was never going to everyone's farvorite.

    It is an amazing scene; The Death Guard has the Salamanders dead in the warp. Daemons flooding the ship and Terminators boarding it. And then their leader begins to panic, as he senses an enormous mind envelop the Salamanders ship and he flees in near-blind terror. That is just how mighty Magnus is within the Warp. He passed through Geller-fields, froze hordes of demons and guided a ship safe to Terra in the otherwise impenetrable Ruinstorm.

    Before he went full daemon, Magnus’ actions proved that he was always loyal and altruistic. This furthers the tragedy of his story and his legion. So much depth to their story

      Even as deamon prince his altruistic nature though twisted still exists. He wants to create a heaven for all psykers in his new planet for one. He attacked the Fenris for his ritual when he could have used a much less defended planet. Yes he killed shitton of innocent people but the fact that he still went for a target for his ire back in the day speak volumes.

    Magnus would've had a lot of like about Vulkan. He and his sons were different, just like the Thousand Sons. He supported the Librarius, was humane and valued knowledge and good craftsman ship and...well, aside from Curze, Vulkan could get along with just about anyone.

    Magnus did not turn against the Imperium, the Imperium turned against him.
    He never meant to break the wards on Terra, he only meant to warn the Emperor.
    Horus manipulate Russ(not difficult) to kill Magnus, rather than being him to Terra.
    If a Primarch is to return from Chaos, then it will be Magnus, for he never wanted to turn.

    Ah if only he had bundled him back to Terra as the emperor intended instead. Emperor dammit. It's telling all the cool dude primachs like Sanguinius, Jagathai and Vulkan are fond of Magnus.

    Magnus and vulkan werent very different their ideals were fairly similar. Both were hopeful romantics for the future. Magnus' loss was a tragedy, russ was in the wrong, he was tricked, and to stubborn to admit it. The state of the hellish imperium is partially russ' fault. (How great is the lore that we can have such different complex opinions of it?)

      Russ was tricked, but he did regret it. He stayed in isolation for a good while in sorrow/ doubt and decided to change after the event, and I believe was the reason for why he didn't outright kill Horus when given the chance

    I always love just how MUCH content there is for WH40k. So many books. So many different little gems of interaction between the primarchs, champions, and other named characters. Stuff I might never even seen, in a book I've never read.

      Got to disagree, when he forsaw Russ coming at him like a rabid fool he should have taken action, either running to terra first or better for the imperium shanking him as the Hradnkal broke from the warp with the entire 15th fleet prepped around it.

      He did a lot of wrong, but a lot of it can indeed be blamed on the Emperor not wanting to explain anything. The Emperor should have known Magnus especially is not the kind of person to be "sated" with a "Because I said so". He's too curious, too confident, and especially too arrogant for that. Much like the Emperor himself.

    If the Emperor had ordered Vulcan and his Salamanders to attack and destroy Prospero, l think Vulcan would have refused.
    That's why the Emperor sent the Wolves, he knew Russ would obey orders no matter what.

      The Emperor didn't send the wolves to destroy Prospero. He sent them to censure Magnus. Horus intercepted the orders and changed them.

      Actually I think Vulcan had he been able to go there and actually talk with Magnus he might have been the one to talk him into surrendering himself
      Brother if everything you say is true surrender yourself and throw yourself at the mercy of the emperor at the very least your sons will be there to defend the home world when the enemy attacks this is no time for us to fight

    Would you consider Magnus after his shattering the same person as before? I feel like having lost so much aspects before becoming a deamon makes him akin to Agron before and after the nails.

    just got done w Deathfire and though I read a lot of bad reviews about it, I honestly enjoyed the relationships described between Legions on Mcragge and the differences of beliefs within the Salamanders. a bit slow at times but nice nonetheless

    Magnus actually got along REALLY well with a handful of his brothers, and not the ones most people would expect. Before I knew much about the lore, I would have assumed Magnus, Lorgar, and maybe another traitor like Perutabo or Horus would have been the closest, but it was definitely the Khan and Vulcan that showed him the most comradery. I know you're a Wolves fan, but I truly think Magnus and the Thousand Sons falling to chaos is one of the most tragic stories to come out of the Heresy era. Magnus never wanted it, his sons never did either, they were put into a constant losing situation and just made the wrong choices. That being said... chaos Tsons is still my favorite army

    I could actually see a 40k salamanders vs thousand son event. As much as the wolves and tson hate each Vulkan did defeat Magnus twice and even corrected him in the second fight about why he really came home.

    If they had all grown up on Earth, I think there would definitely have been a bond merely from the time spent together. I think that by the time they all met, they were already all grown-up and some of their personalities were incompatible as a result. There's also the fact that those with the harsher upbringing were likely jealous of the others, and this caused a rift between them.
    Ultimately, it doesn't really matter since the Heresy separated even the closest of Primarchs.

    Honestly, and very generally cliched, there are just some people you meet with and click. Almost like magnetism, no matter how different you may be there's just something pulling you towards them. Others still are more like oil and water, no matter how much they interact they'll forever be separated, regardless of common ground.
