I found out that not only is his opposition to C-16 rational, tolerant, and important, but he has a wealth of useful and practical insights into the human condition. From what I've read, though, his interpretation was incorrect. Peterson's defense of free speech is good, but the law doesn't require the use of any new pronouns; it mostly just adds gender identity to existing stuff about genocide and hate crimes, and hate speech laws are only used in extreme cases.

That may be because he said that he himself explores a topic in his speeches. He has lots of experience on the topic and just goes with the flow, and so does the audience who is also unknowingly exploring the topic.

I plan to translate him, but I work part time teaching English and part time web programming. My native language is Spanish, somewhere in the top 4 most spoken languages in the world, and it's a shame that I can barely find any videos of him with Spanish subtitles for my lower level students to get. Also, this is one of his most complex lectures, so it'll take me a while to get to this one.
High school student here - so grateful to have come across Mr. Peterson. I think he is changing my life. So many insights and life lessons, one after the another, it's almost too much to take in at times.

Michael Grizzle, I am a high school student too. I was introduced to Mr. Peterson in late 2017, I believe. 2018 has become a year were I have been cleaning up my room. However, this room is not just a physical space, it is my life. If you ever face adversity from our other counterparts of the youth, know that adversity is the key to a path which commences by failure, which is in turn the key to learning. The things you have learned and the new ideas formed by this process will start to manifest themselves into improvement. And after an x amount of time, those improvements are to be called succes. I finished his book Maps of Meaning yesterday ... God! It took me about a month to read and understand it and it is so profound you wouldn't believe! I recommend this to literally everyone

I'm currently developing my focus, and have been doubtful if I should continue down this path for a multitude of reasons. But this lecture has taught me why I should continue down this path, but also why its my only real option now. I've walked down this path for too long now to turn back, this path has shaped me into who I am, and who I want to be. It just took this lecture to fully realize it, so thank you Jordan Peterson, you have given me one of the most important lectures of my life.
I think what attracts me to jordan peterson as a human being is the fact that I do not feel like he's giving me a sales pitch or a speech. I can clearly see him thinking and speaking at the same time rather than reading off a script. That's what I find so genuine.
So was I but there is an inescapable feeling of emptiness that goes along with it, Peterson seems to connect the dots between rationality and subjectivity in a profound way.
I’m an atheist and a scientist but NOT nihilistic. How could anyone be nihilistic? Our mere existence against all odds, and the existence of our habitable precious earth is such a wonder to treasure! Our cosmos is vast and fascinating and filled with things to still discover! What a blessing it is to be able to exist at all and on top of it, to be able to think about these things! I’m sometimes sad when thinking about how short human life is, how I’ll never know what becomes of humanity or what technology we will still invent, what problems we will overcome. Every day, I’m aware of the fact that I’m already halfway to death (if I’m lucky), but if that pulls me down, I remind myself that I’m getting too greedy and have no right to think like that. incredible. Having sat through a whole semester of his course personality and its transformations, I can see that this was an incredible summation of a whole course.
He manages to go over a large amount of information in a small amount of time, which is part of his own mantra, to explain the most complex things in a simple way. Great lecture.

I think Jordan Peterson is nice to hear for most in their 20s, those younger may have difficulty grasping what he's saying, and those older may have already learned it.
7years later, I am watching this video...its amazing how consistency is a great tool to greatness. Jordan Peterson at this point never knew he would be a celebrity in this present day and Era 2020. Same way 7years from now whoever is reading this will be shocked to say this comment is so apt, therefore, i shouldn't look down on myself. I'd keep on being consistent in my hardwork and dedication.
Have got to be one of his best speeches. It's so profound to realise this concept of things shining forth and to follow your intuition. It's remarkable where it will take you! Been trying to pay attention and be aware of what merely seems meaningful lately, and it is precisely like Peterson is saying. I love Professor Peterson's passion - he puts forward his case for the importance of these ideas in such a way that makes you think that the life and death of civilization itself is on the line. Choose the upright path or all of civilization crumbles! It's a powerful message.
I believe that is his ultimate goal behind all his efforts. He understands that too many minds fall prey to the corrupt ways of things and he is providing a pathway/mindset to combat that. By providing good natured & logical perspectives he helps people lead successful & productive lives whilst still maintaining their good moral compass & integrity intact.
What I like about him is that he truly cares and honestly wants to heal the world to move society to consider each other. He doesn't seek to move his ego above others, he's remained humble. The only other person that I've read about that remained humble when faced with the possibility of power is President George Washington who after amassing a military force, defeating an enemy, winning a war walked away and went home . He was the first man to do that. Jordan Peterson doesn't demand or coerce his audience to follow him. He empowers the listener and encourages self healing and to pass the information on.
This is one of the most dense and insightful TedTalks that exists. Having said that, I am a bit surprised that it wasn't banned on the same ignorant grounds as Rupert Sheldrake's and Graham Hancock's were.
I think I get you, but I wouldn't call them sloppy as much as blunt. Sheldrake is a proper scientist. Still, it shows a general lack of openness from TED.
Do you think a paper by JP on the subject of bias in peer review would pass peer review? By the nature of the content alone, it most probably wouldn't. It is the nature of his topics that prevents RS from getting published. I think he sees and agrees with all the general points that JP would. It's just that JP is braver in taking on institutionalized opponents directly... in playing their game and forcing that game to implode. RS is more of a recluse in that regard. His writing is good, but he generally doesn't want to play the game. He rejects offers to speak with people like Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins because he knows that will lead to the same ontological roadblock that SH and JP recently came to. Fair enough, because it would. I wouldn't call RS sloppy... just more reclusive. GH just has a general lack of organization, which is why his books are so damn long. Sloppy? Sure, but his general points are on the right track too. I think that's all he cares about, and that's fine.
Rupert Sheldrake being the guy who said that gravity is not constant so we should question the theories where average gravity is used? I mean averages are not new and the guy did not even consider that the molten parts of earth's core are enough to create variations in gravity.

You gave me a realization.. The only man I EVER called Dad (whom I wasn't related to at all.. a friends Dad) He was JUST LIKE Jordan Peterson.. more of a spiritual bend, but was very similar: HIGHLY intelligent, well spoken, passionate and a serious reader. He'd studied spirituality since he was a child.. And I learned from him, listened to him.. he even said we taught each other. The love that man gave to me will ALWAYS be missed. He saved my life in so many ways. I changed paths in Life the day I met him. And I am eternally grateful for that. He passed away almost a decade ago now.. and I do miss him dearly. But, I can keep going, knowing the love and knowledge he gave me was 2-3 lifetimes worth. So I carry on, doing my best.. he taught me to be proud of who I am, what I have accomplished, and to never quit trying.. no matter how bad it gets. I can achieve ANYTHING I set my mind to.. I just have to try. He adopted me as one of his own.. a poor kid with no dad.. and no real future.. and he showed me differently. And showed me courage and how to be courageous.. He saved my life. And he did it out of love. I got REALLY lucky. And I have a better life because of him.

Jordan Peterson speaks with such piercing focus, monumental intellect, and burning passion, one can't help but be mesmerized by him. This man is like the burning flame of modern civilization - a shining beacon for all those who are lost or buried under the weight of their own sadness and pain. I for one am very glad to have the opportunity to learn from his wisdom. He's not the father we deserve, but the one many of us desperately need right now.

I'm in college right now and we are all mostly in it for the degree because we want a job and we all lament the cost of tuition but sometimes when I hear some really amazing lectures and realize that as a student I can go to office hours and just make intellectual explorations with my professors and that its their job to discuss these things with me and give me access to the tons of obscure books in the school library that you wouldn't find in a public library I feel like college is a damn bargain and a blessing unlike any other. Until i get bogged down with work and tests and worrying about GPA and realize the neither myself nor any other students are really taking advantage of those things.

If you do some reading (or listening) about history, it really helps to grasp most concepts he teaches. His history lessons are the best.

High school student here - so grateful to have come across Mr. Peterson. I think he is changing my life. So many insights and life lessons, one after the another, it's almost too much to take in at times.

Michael Grizzle, I am a high school student too. I was introduced to Mr. Peterson in late 2017, I believe. 2018 has become a year were I have been cleaning up my room. However, this room is not just a physical space, it is my life. If you ever face adversity from our other counterparts of the youth, know that adversity is the key to a path which commences by failure, which is in turn the key to learning. The things you have learned and the new ideas formed by this process will start to manifest themselves into improvement. And after an x amount of time, those improvements are to be called succes.

I'm currently developing my focus, and have been doubtful if I should continue down this path for a multitude of reasons. But this lecture has taught me why I should continue down this path, but also why its my only real option now. I've walked down this path for too long now to turn back, this path has shaped me into who I am, and who I want to be. It just took this lecture to fully realize it, so thank you Jordan Peterson, you have given me one of the most important lectures of my life.

I think what attracts me to jordan peterson as a human being is the fact that I do not feel like he's giving me a sales pitch or a speech. I can clearly see him thinking and speaking at the same time rather than reading off a script. That's what I find so genuine.

I’m an atheist and a scientist but NOT nihilistic. How could anyone be nihilistic? Our mere existence against all odds, and the existence of our habitable precious earth is such a wonder to treasure! Our cosmos is vast and fascinating and filled with things to still discover! What a blessing it is to be able to exist at all and on top of it, to be able to think about these things! I’m sometimes sad when thinking about how short human life is, how I’ll never know what becomes of humanity or what technology we will still invent, what problems we will overcome. Every day, I’m aware of the fact that I’m already halfway to death (if I’m lucky), but if that pulls me down, I remind myself that I’m getting too greedy and have no right to think like that. I’ve been given a life! And that’s not nothing! 😉 Most people that could have existed (their genetic material) never did end up existing at all! We are the 0.0000...1%
incredible. Having sat through a whole semester of his course personality and its transformations, I can see that this was an incredible summation of a whole course.

I think Jordan Peterson is nice to hear for most in their 20s, those younger may have difficulty grasping what he's saying, and those older may have already learned it.
7years later, I am watching this video...its amazing how consistency is a great tool to greatness. Jordan Peterson at this point never knew he would be a celebrity in this present day and Era 2020. Same way 7years from now whoever is reading this will be shocked to say this comment is so apt, therefore, i shouldn't look down on myself. I'd keep on being consistent in my hardwork and dedication.

Have got to be one of his best speeches. It's so profound to realise this concept of things shining forth and to follow your intuition. It's remarkable where it will take you! Been trying to pay attention and be aware of what merely seems meaningful lately, and it is precisely like Peterson is saying. You become more grounded in a sense och more secure as a person, you can handle almost whatever's being tossed in your direction. SO COOL. Thank you.

I love Professor Peterson's passion - he puts forward his case for the importance of these ideas in such a way that makes you think that the life and death of civilization itself is on the line. Choose the upright path or all of civilization crumbles! It's a powerful message.
I believe that is his ultimate goal behind all his efforts. He understands that too many minds fall prey to the corrupt ways of things and he is providing a pathway/mindset to combat that. By providing good natured & logical perspectives he helps people lead successful & productive lives whilst still maintaining their good moral compass & integrity intact.
What I like about him is that he truly cares and honestly wants to heal the world to move society to consider each other. He doesn't seek to move his ego above others, he's remained humble.
The only other person that I've read about that remained humble when faced with the possibility of power is President George Washington who after amassing a military force, defeating an enemy, winning a war walked away and went home . He was the first man to do that.
Jordan Peterson doesn't demand or coerce his audience to follow him. He empowers the listener and encourages self healing and to pass the information on.

That T.S. Elliot quote is one of the most beautiful pieces of writing i've ever read. If you could sum up the meaning of "Hope", that would be it.
This is one of the most dense and insightful TedTalks that exists. Having said that, I am a bit surprised that it wasn't banned on the same ignorant grounds as Rupert Sheldrake's and Graham Hancock's were.
I think I get you, but I wouldn't call them sloppy as much as blunt. Sheldrake is a proper scientist. Still, it shows a general lack of openness from TED.
Do you think a paper by JP on the subject of bias in peer review would pass peer review? By the nature of the content alone, it most probably wouldn't. It is the nature of his topics that prevents RS from getting published. I think he sees and agrees with all the general points that JP would. It's just that JP is braver in taking on institutionalized opponents directly... in playing their game and forcing that game to implode. RS is more of a recluse in that regard. His writing is good, but he generally doesn't want to play the game. He rejects offers to speak with people like Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins because he knows that will lead to the same ontological roadblock that SH and JP recently came to. Fair enough, because it would. I wouldn't call RS sloppy... just more reclusive. GH just has a general lack of organization, which is why his books are so damn long. Sloppy? Sure, but his general points are on the right track too. I think that's all he cares about, and that's fine.

Rupert Sheldrake being the guy who said that gravity is not constant so we should question the theories where average gravity is used? I mean averages are not new and the guy did not even consider that the molten parts of earth's core are enough to create variations in gravity.
Im pretty confident graham was banned soley because his ted talk was about ayhuasica. No more or no less of a reason. I couldnt imagine ted talk advocating someone saying you should do lsd either. He was JUST LIKE Jordan Peterson.. more of a spiritual bend, but was very similar:
HIGHLY intelligent, well spoken, passionate and a serious reader. He'd studied spirituality since he was a child..
And I learned from him, listened to him.. he even said we taught each other. The love that man gave to me will ALWAYS be missed. He saved my life in so many ways. I changed paths in Life the day I met him. And I am eternally grateful for that.
He passed away almost a decade ago now.. and I do miss him dearly. But, I can keep going, knowing the love and knowledge he gave me was 2-3 lifetimes worth. So I carry on, doing my best.. he taught me to be proud of who I am, what I have accomplished, and to never quit trying.. no matter how bad it gets. I can achieve ANYTHING I set my mind to.. I just have to try.
He adopted me as one of his own.. a poor kid with no dad.. and no real future.. and he showed me differently. And showed me courage and how to be courageous.. He saved my life. And he did it out of love. I got REALLY lucky. And I have a better life because of him.
Wow ... I've watched a number of his videos, but this one in particular really stood out to me and speaks to me the depth of the meaning of our existence, very relevant both to my lifelong exploration and to the point of my journey now...

It is so great to listen to a person that is so passionate and knowledgeable like Jordan Peterson. His work and lectures are some of my favorites alongside the work of Alan Watts, Earl Nightingale, and Jamen Allen.
It's nice to hear him speak without being interrupted every other sentence.
I feel that my life is so much better since I found Jordan Peterson on line. Now I devour everything I can find that he has put on line. He has helped me make sense of this crazy world we live in.

Jordan Peterson speaks with such piercing focus, monumental intellect, and burning passion, one can't help but be mesmerized by him. This man is like the burning flame of modern civilization - a shining beacon for all those who are lost or buried under the weight of their own sadness and pain. I for one am very glad to have the opportunity to learn from his wisdom. He's not the father we deserve, but the one many of us desperately need right now.

Ive watched a few of his lectures and I'm always impressed by his intelligence, this particular one struck me because it shows his wisdom.
One of the greatest minds and teachers of all time. He'll take you all the way through and out the other side. He really helped me get a cohesive handle on a variety of subjects. The way he weaves so many subjects together into something you can understand is key, but even more in how he teaches you to look at things. Thankful for his work. :)
Jordan Peterson always provides these brilliant and highly organized speeches. It was exactly what I would have expected when I was in my youth from a teacher. His wisdom is what is needed in this age that summarizes abstract concepts and philosophies into actionable plans.

practically every time i hear this person talk, i am fascinated. it's like a big christmas dinner to my starving intellect. i'm also impressed by his integrity and social conscientiousness. never been interested in paying to go to university but if profs were more like JP.....may consider it. engaging and relevant.

I'm in college right now and we are all mostly in it for the degree because we want a job and we all lament the cost of tuition but sometimes when I hear some really amazing lectures and realize that as a student I can go to office hours and just make intellectual explorations with my professors and that its their job to discuss these things with me and give me access to the tons of obscure books in the school library that you wouldn't find in a public library I feel like college is a damn bargain and a blessing unlike any other.
Until i get bogged down with work and tests and worrying about GPA and realize the neither myself nor any other students are really taking advantage of those things.

I can't watch this because sounds like 'p' goes straight into the subwoofer. After that, compress the living shit out of the dynamics. Speech like this can handle the abuse, unlike music.
