  • I asked my trainer if she thought any new horses I get would be easier than Milo and she said that they're basically guaranteed to be because virtually no horse is as sensitive and quirky as my little red horse... This journey is very much not over, it's just begun.

    Damn this gives me the feels. Once in a lifetime we are given an opportunity with a horse that makes us great. Not only do they need us, we need them as well. Where would we be without the blood sweat and tears and lessons learned ? One doesn’t learn true horsemanship from buying a 10k horse and paying a years salary for lessons and shows.
    Shelby is the best example of the love and pure passion it takes to become this amazing, and Milo helped her.

    Best horse video EVER! Thank you for sticking with him. Because of his past, he's not going to give in easily. You've become quite the expert at staying in the saddle, even when he thinks he doesn't want you there. Each time he's testing you to check if you will walk away. Stay the course girl, he's a beauty and you deserve each other.

    Oh my.. I have so many things I wanna say right now. Idk where to start & I def don't want to come off sounding weird or anything, but I think you'll be able to understand where I'm coming from.
    Here I go.... CONGRATS on coming so far with Milo. I also want to say thank you to you & your mom for not giving up on Milo when it seemed like the easier thing to do at the time. Perhaps your mom knew he had some valuable lessons to teach you (as most moms usually do) as well as you had things you needed to teach him - above & beyond the "normal" horsey stuff. I can see all the diff quirks in Milo you mentioned in the videos you share. Ive mentiones my fiesty chesnut Arab i had for 26 yrs & how I see a lot of him in Milo. I truly do all the way down to that fire in his eye and the crinkled lil nose whenever he decides its time to do what HE wants & theres no stopping him. My boy was the same exact way but once he got in his 20s he mellowed out a lot. Saying that, it takes a patient, responsible, smart, mature & dedicated person to stick with a horse of that caliber. They're not for everyone & that alone makes the journey w/them THAT much more rewarding. Watching this video helped me re-live some long lost memories i have with my guy, so tyvm, Shelby. Although, i wasnt expecting to have the amount of tears streaming down my face that i do now! Haha! Well worth it tho!! I miss my boy & simply being around horses in general. I hope 1 day I can get over this depression & isolation I've developed since losing my boy and get back out there. Ill prob never own a horse again but if i could just smell them a few days a week, I'd be happy. For right now I'm kinda living vicariously thru you.
    I know the highest, top "internet trainers" of the world along with negative/ugly attitudes take a toll on you occasionally, but I truly hope that you honestly know what an amazing person you are & that you do give hope to others that previously had none. You put a smile on the face of this 35 yr old girl who never grew out of the horse loving stage who's a bit beaten up at the moment. From the bottom of my heart Shelby, THANK YOU!! Dont ever stop doing you & what you do. Please never stop loving Milo and most importantly please never give up on him! (Not that I think you will or anything) He will always need you & with a lil patience, there isn't anything that you 2 cannot accomplish with some effort and time. He is yours and you are his and thats just how it should stay until the end of time. ♡♡♡♡♡♡

      I read all you wrote and of course I don't know your life, but please, I encourage you to do anything you can to get close to horses again. Not necessarily own a horse but ride someone else's horse once a week or so, bond with him, and I am sure that joy and light will enter your heart and your life again. I spent so many years without horses, but since I started riding again and more importantly caring for horses, spend time with them, just time ... I know that I will never ever again accept to live without them ! Send you good vibes :-)

    • @1spoiledbabygirl
      @1spoiledbabygirl 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      algypsy17 Thank you very much for taking the time to read my comment & replying! I am trying to get back around horses but when my boy and his field buddy passed unexpectedly, i lost my world and the barn i boarded at. I had been there the whole 26 yrs i owned him & when they both passed, the owner of the barn made the decision not to have horses anymore as the loss was too painful for him as well. Plus he was an older gentleman (pushing 70) & was having trouble getting around & keeping up with everything. I can't afford the prices even for a partial lease. Not to mention my depression & agoraphobia makes it hard for me to be that outgoing person I once was. I have no friends & even when i did, none of them had even seen a horse before.
      However, my mom has reached out to a rescue organization on my behalf to see about me volunteering a couple days a week just to get me in the presence of horses again because she knows how important they truly are to my well being. So there's a small bit of hope I didn't have before. I miss the rewards that come with being around horses & they are my 1 true happy place in this world that's become so ugly these days. But thank you again! I truly appreciate your kind words!

    • @algypsy17
      @algypsy17 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I understand you completely ! The loss of your horse and his buddy has been the most painful thing one can imagine and it is absolutely hard for you to recover. You won't really get over it completely, which is normal because you won't ever forget him. But I think your mum's idea is great ! If you could volunteer for rescue horses I truly believe it will do you so much good. Besides, rescue horses are in such need of love and care and you will see in their eyes how greatful they will be. Caring for horses is even more important than riding. The animal is more important than the sports. Horses have healing power ! I went through hard times myself, depression as well and I am a very solitary person, not a people person at all, so I also understand your agoraphobia. Don't ever give up hope, better times will come, it takes time, a lot of time ... but starting with this voluntary activity would really be great I think :-) !!! ♡♡♡

      Amanda Ernspiker your comment is so kind and honest💕 You are clearly a very compassionate person with a real love for horses, so I hope you find some ways to reconnect with horses and feed your soul again!

    • @sue-jd5bo
      @sue-jd5bo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That is a beautiful comment which I also agree completely too. I hope she sees this. I know this won't change anything, but I encourage you to begin riding again. I know this isn't the same, but I lost my dog to cancer a few years ago, which kicked me into depression and caused me to start to decline in school. Horses help me so much, but of course I still miss my dog. A few months ago I decided to try to adopt a rescue dog and he has covered the hole in my heart that was left empty by my dog. Of course it's not the same, but it actually really heals you, and you end up loving them in a different way for different reasons. I'm not saying to go back out there and ride again, but maybe start small by volunteering and working with horses. I swear to you it will make you feel so much better. Sending my prayers to help you get through this hard time.

    Thank you so much for allowing us to take this journey with you. This is a great lesson that horses that seem "untrainable", with the right person, can thrive. I believe that once you find your soul horse, you really do know what they need. You are the one riding them and can "read" how your horse will respond and what their training schedule should look like.
    Shelby, you have been so brave to continue to upload training videos of your horses when continuing to receive unsolicited advice. You have made it clear that you do not want or need outsiders opinions, especially since they have never even ridden Milo.
    So, I have decided to give you some advice... not as a trainer, but as a "mom"! Try your best not to even read negative opinions about you and your training... and just focus on all the good things that are happening with your horses. Spend your energy on positivity for Milo's sake!!

I am sorry internet has been putting this horrible pressure on you but you are INCREDIBLE. You and milo both are. You make me feel a little less alone dealing with my horse’s problem because every time I just think if Shelby has been trying this hard with her horse over the past four years I don’t have a reason to not keep trying and working with my horse like she does. It's funny. My chestnut mare is just like that. Got her when she was two years old and on the way to the slaughter house. She is now 23 and still isn't an easy ride in some ways, but absolutely safe in others. 😅 If you know her, you KNOW. But I could never let just anyone on her back. And still feel safe putting my boyfriend, who isn't a rider (but somehow talented 🤷) or my little girls in her sattle. It was so worth it sticking with her, when I wanted to give up on her. People called her dangerous and crazy, but she isn't. She's just protecting herself and sometimes being silly. 😂 But she knows I can handle it, she's not actually trying to hurt me.
    Anyway, Milo reminds me of her at that age. Much Love! ♥️

    This video actually inspires me.. I'm having a hard time with my own horse.. I got him october last year and I feel like I didn't make any progress at all.. He's scared of almost everything, especially during the winter times, you know when it's cold and freezy. There are times that I'm riding him and the only thing I'm doing is making him stop running. I have times where I actually want to sell him and give up. I have a hard time trusting him, but now I know that if I work hard, I will make progress.. No matter how long that will take! He's not the perfect horse and I know I will fall down a few times, but that's part of horse riding..

    I love this video so much. Milo honestly sounds a lot like my OTTB gelding but he was not abused at all at the track. He's extremely difficult but his is more on the ground, under saddle he's very consistent even though he is very green still. He challenges me and is un-apologetically honest and demanding. He doesn't take anything less than he thinks he deserves from anyone. I have earned his trust and respect in order to get respect from him. We just went through a short period of stall rest for a large but superficial wound on his leg and he was nasty to deal with and unfortunately he is hurt now and we are in the process of trying to figure out what the injury is with our vet and we are on stall rest again and I'm dreading how miserable he will get and aggressively angry and how far back it will set us with respect once he's off of stall rest. But he is also the best partner I could ask for, he guards me like my dogs do. He is definitely worth every frustrating second

    You two are so perfect for each other!
    The time and effort you have put into him shows. Its nice to see that you were willing to give the time he needed. Many would have given up and he would have been passed around if it wasn't for you :)
    Keep it up, there will still be many challenges ahead of you both. But we all know you will overcome them even after a few falls xD

    Beautiful video! What your trainer said was obvious in your videos of Archie, who seemed so docile and uncomplicated compared with Milo. Your bridleless gallops with Milo were truly remarkable, that took a lot of confidence!

    You both have come SO far. You should be so proud of him and yourself! Thank gosh your mom encouraged you to keep him. He has helped you become such a strong and talented rider. My horse has recently tore a muscle or ligament. He is also the kind that cannot be given time off or he is crazy. We have a couple months left of the stall rest and it is going to be very hard to get him back to where he was. But I only want the best for him.
