Energy is natural exuberance. Letting animals and kids get their friskiness out is one of the best things we can do. Thank you for appreciating a horse being a horse.

"With Milo I can never lose"
That is the best quote I've ever heard. It's not about glory in shows, but pure love for your companion who has helped you get this far; pure appreciation for the happiness of your horse. Aaaaaa you two make a beautiful pair, and I'm sure you two will only improve in every way going forward. Watching yours and Milo's journey for the last five years has been a humbling experience, and it made me rethink my way of riding horses three years ago. Bless you, for being an amazing person who makes a difference in the lives of so many horses, ensuring them a happy future❤

Milo is almost the embodyment of “train/ride the horse you have today”
It doesn’t matter how he was 10 days ago or 10 minutes ago. You just gotta deal with what he is now and what he needs now.
You and Milo are a great match.

Hi Shelby. I don't normally comment but I think Milo is extremely lucky to have you too. Your an incredible young woman and rider, who shows amazing maturity. I don't think many riders would have given Milo the time and help. He's gorgeous and I feel he will take you all the way :-) Marion

My thoughts exactly Marion. they are an amazing pairing. Shelby would have be one of the best trainers I have seen; the main difference between her and some others I could mention boils down to one word - LOVE. Milo is truly her heart horse.

I absolutely love this. The fact that you are humble enough to admit that you have changed your training style and realized that telling a horse doesn't get you nearly as far as asking them. People are too quick to punish an animal for being what they are and what their instincts tell them to do. I can't wait to see both him and you and banksey accomplish in the future!

I have worked with many horse from elderly broken down horses, to a very abused OOTB to a halflinger who was rescued from a severe trucking accident. Never did I use the same training method for any of them. The horse I work with now is a neglected appendix quarter who was previously trained but has a lot of hoof/ joint issues due to his feet being in horrible condition for so long. Just like people, horses are all unique. I'm proud that you didn't give up on Milo because like you said, the hardest ones make you the better rider. Keep pushing

  • @cassiebucci2460
    @cassiebucci2460 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Not gonna lie, I cried a little. The horse I'm working with now is an extremely hot OTTB who was "abused" straight off the track. He was immediately thrown over 4 foot jumps when he came off the track, because of his athleticism and need to please his rider. The result was many trainers being thrown off or raced around with. We got him on his way to a kill pen after he was passed around 4 different trainers, each saying that he would never be able to do anything but run, and I hate to think what would have happened if we hadn't been there. He is truly my heart horse, a horse we bought to resell but has since won over every part of me. He was extremely nervous and timid around jumps, freaking out if they were even in the arena with him when I first got him. Over a year later he is taking small XC courses in his stride and tiny verticals in the arena. There were a lot of ups and downs but today he did his first small course in just a halter and this video could not have come at a better time. He has really taught me what he likes and is comfortable with and our relationship is not one of an owner and an animal, it is a partnership. I push him to do what I know he has in him, and he tells me what he likes. He has really come to enjoy working, and realized that the jumps can be small and fun, not walls blocking his path. He is truly a horse with fire in his soul and he is more than willing to share it with his rider.

I had a Doberman like Milo. He came to me at 5 months old very under socialized and deeply suspicious of everyone. I thought I would never be able to even pet him but I never gave up on him. I finally earned his trust, then his respect, and then his love. He became the best behaved and loving dog you could ever want, but never lost that fierceness in his heart that also made him a great protector. I agree with you that the hardest battles teach you the most and are the most rewarding. Love your videos

I spent years in riding lessons. I looked very pretty on a horse, but it took my own rescue gelding to actually teach me how to ride. He was difficult. Painfully difficult. He taught me patience. He taught me confidence. I came out the other side a much better rider...and quite a bit less pretty in the saddle.

Shelby this is beyond beautiful. Owning a horse is a privilege I wake up everyday reminding myself that, that so many people would give up so much to do what I do, I wouldn’t be where I am without the horse I love. He’s humbled me and inspired me and taught me patience more than words. I’ve found that when you step back and say
    “He’s just a horse
    I’m just a person
    We’re just having fun
    There’s no pressure
This is meant to be enjoyed”
It’s all put into a perspective thank you so much for all that you do ❤️

Man it was 0:01 when I liked the video. I love this channel and anyone who sends hate comments, ask yourselves this. Can you train horses by yourself, have a job, do TH-cam, and you have to know that, the horses Shelby trains are sometimes very hard to work with. So no more hate if you can’t do that!

This is awesome! I recently started my own journey with my yearling, and as a teenager let me tell you; its hard. Really damn hard. I relate to Shelby's and Milo's story very much, because I've defiantly had times so far where I felt like sitting down and crying because I was so frustrated. Now though, even after having Mason (my yearling) for only 4 months, we have achieved so much and gotten to know and learn from each other. When I first got Mason, he hated people even being near him, and was petrified of very simple things like a touch on the neck or back. Now he goes over trotting poles, walks on bridges, clips, ties, backs up, and trailers with ease. Its all about finding what your horse can do and what they need work on. I cannot stress this enough, BEATING YOUR HORSE WHEN IT DOESN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU'RE ASKING IS N O T THE ANSWER! My mother was taught this way and tried to pass it onto me, which I did not follow up on. I recently rode her horse who she smacks whenever he refuses to do something or gets to confused and shuts down, and with gentle encouragement and allowing him to think about something has given him his freedom that he seeked, and therefor he was happy to please me in exchange for freedom and relaxation- not stressing about being kicked or slapped for not doing something exactly right, the moment it was asked.

Milo sounds a lot like my appaloosa mare. Shes 22 but still full of spit and vinegar. She will work for you but you have to ask. Demanding gets balking. Roughness is met with defense. She, too, was abused and a rescue and does not tolerate being rough. Praise gets her attention. Food rewards make her work even harder. I adore her.

My tears are flowing!! I have said before you are so far beyond your years. You remind me of me. My horse was not the show Hunter/Jumpers we were up against in the show ring but we never gave up. I learned much from my horse Lollipop. She had a Milo spirit. Wouldn't have changed a thing. You are so understanding of Milo and that is what he needs. You both ARE a team so enjoy this chapter of your life. I know you work so hard but just enjoy!!!!

This is all so true. My first loan was a really out of shape pony that used to explode whenever we went into an open field or near a jump. I loaned her for about 3-4 years and tried so many things to stop her bucking and jogging and trying to bolt. I’m so glad I eventually realised it was just her personality. She once bucked me out the saddle onto her neck, and waited for me to get back in the saddle before doing it again. She wasn’t trying to get me off she was just saying she was excited! She loved to jump and we rarely made it round a show with a clear round, I’d get comments from the announcer at our regular local show ground. I would have preferred dressage at the time, we tried it once and I was left in tears and she was miserable. So trails and jumping it was. She’d school beautifully at home but not out! She was happy and that was all that mattered.

I am so impressed with how eloquently you describe your journey with Milo. You have a talent for words and could write a book about yourself and horses that would be valuable and interesting to many. You’ve come SO far with Milo! I too took on a young gelding, now 5, who is such a rascal, and have felt so stumped along the way. He is unlike any previous horse I’ve owned in his stubbornness, excitability, ultra friendliness, super opinionated dislikes and likes, and (now) large size. I believe I am up to the challenge, but it’s a constant learning experience, which makes it interesting. Thank you for this video, it has given me inspiration to continue and not feel like my floundering is unusual. Bravo to you and Milo and the other horses in your life.

Milo reminds me of my first horse. She was also a rescue and just two years old. She was high spirited and loved to dance and play like him. Her name was Cherokee and she lived to be 25. Sadly, she had to be put down due to an illness. I stayed by her side because you don’t leave a friend alone when they need you. In her memory, I’m going to a kill auction and saving another horse’s life.
I love watching you and Milo play because it brings back happy (and sometimes frustrating) memories. I wish you two a long and loving life together

    Your story is so beautiful!
I bought my first horse 5 months ago (I have been riding for 8 years) he’s a hot headed OTTB, many trainers have called him dangerous. I never gave up on him and never will, we recently won our first 90cm showjumping competition, although ribbons don’t define him as a horse or me as a rider it definitely gives us a brighter section of our story❤️

Someone boards their horse at her barn and I love him. He’s an OTTB and quite nervous. One time he spooked and his 70 year owner fell off. So naturally she sent him away and bought a three year old. He recently can back to my friends barn and fell in love. He never gets worked even though he is one of the most athletic and energetic horses I’ve ever met. I lunged him for the first time since summer (I live in Australia) he was very excited and did lots of bucking and rearing. Everyone said that “he’s stressed” but I couldn’t see any stress on his face. I stopped and tried to bring him in (I was free lunging) but he kept bucking. I could see how much he liked moving after months of being stuck with a paddock mate not right for him. When we finally stopped and brought him out of the round yard everyone told me to stay nice and calm as he was stressed. I’ll say this one last time HE WAS BOT STRESSED he was excited and happy that someone was actually playing attention to him. After watching you and milo go so far together I have hope that one day my and him can do the same.

I have a horse I'm riding that gets really excited sometimes, l,ike really excited. Especially with jumps and things like that, he doesn't work well with punishments and I don't think I ever tried that but with some tihngs I have to be way more stubborn with him.
Sometimes he doesn't move off my leg, at all. He'll just take the pressure and keep walking as he wishes, I will have to reapply my leg lots of times and sometimes more firmly and release all pressure when he relaxes or does what I want and give him praise for it.
When jumping he gets annoyed if the rider "gets in his way" so I try to ride as quietly as possible but he's a fiery redhead and will charge through jumps only to buck or bolt off after it so it's a fine line between what I can and can't do, I can expect a buck if I forget to praise him for "coming back to me" while jumping. He will also just bolt, buck or take off in other directions if he feels I got just a little off-balance or he wants too, if I were to punish him for it he'd kick me off in a heartbeat so It's like a halfhalt I just have to move past it and forget it. He lives in the now so I can't be unhappy about what he did on the last jump.
He also never spooks with me, unless something REALLY suprised him but he will spook with people who don't know about his antics about almost anything.
Is he a relatively easy horse? Yes. Do i still learn a lot riding him? yes. Is he my equivalent to your Milo? probably not, but I hope I find mine someday.

Wow, what a great video ! I do agree 100% with what you say. I am not a very advanced rider and have a poor physical condition, am easily scared. But I do get along very well with horses that cause other people trouble because I always look for other solutions rather than dominance. I prefer mutual respect and partnership and that works !
I am so proud of Milo and you, I watch your videos since a few years now, and really you are an excellent rider and horsewoman. So happy that you adopted Milo, you are his human, and you are lucky, he taught you so much in return !
They said it was impossible ! So Shelby did it !

Wow Shelby! I love watching your journey with Milo, it is honestly seriously inspiring! My horse Nugget reminds me of Milo in many ways. He is a rescue as well, but faced abuse and neglect as an older horse, and came to me directly from the owner who mistreated him. He has serious confidence issues, and also thrives of praise and hates being punished. Until very recently he would frequently shut down and start rearing when he thought he'd made a mistake, because he thought i was going to punish him. So thank you so much for sharing your journey, I love being able to relate it to my own.

I recently bought a chestnut ottb stalion who has the incredible spirit you're describing, he's unlike any other horse I've met. He is sweet, intelligent, majestic , independent and incredibly challenging at times. He stretches me every day. He also doesn't take well to stalled lifestyle and my recent decision was to give him the life he seems best suited for which is 24/7 turn out with access to an abundant social life. He just turned 3 yo and he will be with me until his last days, of that I'm sure. I shed some tears watching this because I so very much resonate with all your words!

It's so nice that you respect him and what he wants. Its they same with my horse. I have to ask her and she will answer, if I demand it she will have a fit. I don't do shows or anything, we just do what we find fun. Mostly riding in the forest, and now we are learning to ride with a neck rope, if someone who doesn't respect her get on her she will throw them off, end off. She has done it with me a couple of times!
So proud of you and Milo! And that hes staying with you, someone who cares and respect him as an individual!

You guys are so amazing and inspiring. So many other people would have given up on Milo so long ago, calling him “crazy”, but you have always persisted. It’s so awesome how you always see the best in every horse and know that every horse deserves a great life even if they had a rough start and have scars from it. I love your channel, keep doing what you are doing because you are helping so many horses ❤️💓❤️💓

I always say you’re my favourite equestrian youtuber. Seeing this reminded me that years ago when I first watched one of your videos. I had no clue who you were. I didn’t fully start watching you until your response video about bits. Since then, I’ve watched you with pure respect and always agree on your knowledge and opinions. So see what you have done with Milo, is incredible. You’re right, you are meant for each other! Such an inspiring video. Can’t wait to see what you and Milo will accomplish in the future❤️

this is so true, my first horse was an appaloosa pony who decided he wouldn't jump. it took us a really long time but nearly 2 years later we've gone from falling off over crossrails to placing in the hugee 2'3" jumper classes where i show. its' taught me to know when he is being obstinate and when is genuinely scared, and how to treat him in both instances. unfortunately i can't keep him anymore - i'm getting too tall, and i am looking to do eventing, and he just doesn't relish the idea of dressage, and due to his eye problems i no longer think it safe for him to jump larger xc jumps. but he was a good little pony, and if i could kep him as my showjumper forever i would! he's taught me so much and i wouldn't give it up for the world, even if my ribbon wall is less full than it could have been.

im not crying, you're crying! this was so beautiful. You are so talented and I admire you for it. You have more to show for than most people who get a finished horse and climb the classes with a horse that has done all this before. I love that you gave him the time and still do. You are my Role model among Ingrid Klimke! If you wrote a book on your story with Milo, I would totally buy and read it!!!

Shelby you’re incredibly well spoken. I balled like a baby through the last 3/4 of this trying to not cry through the first half. You probably won’t see this; you have better things to do with your time but I just want to let you know that I really took this video to heart as I feel I am one of those horse people who is not patient enough with my horses. We have a lot to learn from those like you. I shared your video on my personal Facebook hoping to educate those around me. Have a wonderful day, from one fellow Canadian to another.

Your words are amazing and I completely share your opinion! Thanks for this video♡ and showing that horseback riding is not about being the best at competitions and "proving that you are a good rider" , but about trust, love and partnership. And about accepting your horse just the way it is and finding out about and falling in love with it's unique character!☆

A good rider and a great trainer is one who is humble and seeks partnership and not servitude. This was a beautiful video and a great philosophy, Ms. Dennis. It's refreshing to see change in an industry that's used what amounts of torture to break horses instead of using compassion to train and teach them.

Because of you I have took on my first 4 year old who we got unbroken and have loved it even when we have our down days but it has given me the confidence to do other things like jumping 80cm when I wouldn’t even go over a 50cm jump on my other horse so thank you for inspiring me to get a young horse and hope your videos have inspired others to☺️❤️

This reminds me with my mare, zoey. She was used as a bigtime showhorse before I got her, and they were trying to break her spirit. She now is with me and Ive noticed there is no 'breaking her spirit' it just isnt gonna happen! Shes now used as my all around showhorse and my big barrel horse. Love that girl.
