- Dale Earnhardt Jr. sits down with long-time crew chief, car owner, and broadcaster Andy Petree for part one of a conversation filled with epic tales about Petree’s rich history and innovative practices in the sport.
Hear about the rulebook loopholes Petree attacked plus the story of how one ‘competitive advantage’ ultimately led Petree to take it off the car after qualifying during race weekend for fear of being caught.

I could listen to Andy Petree talk for hours like this
No doubt. He's seen it all . I enjoyed him in the booth calling races
He was in the both for a while and I lobbied to keep him there because I think he’s one of the best and most fair analyst there is.Because he has 1 million interesting stories. I would pay money to see that decklid put on a car and see how it works. I would pay money to see all of these things that they did to circumvent the rules.
Absolutely. Let's petition to get Andy as a weekly regular
i miss listening to him in the booth. espn/abc coverage is so nostalgic for me just by his voice alone
Same here
Petree is perhaps the most underrated Crew Chiefs in the history of the sport, but one of the nicest guys in all of the NASCAR garage area. Great interview, Dirty Mo Media!
Bud believe me nobody, absolutely nobody has ever underrated Andy petree when it has anything to do with a race car. Everybody in that garage including Gary Nelson, dale earnhardt, Harry gant, Richard childress, etc has known Andy is a genius when it comes to anything to do with a race car, team or strategy, maybe that's why currently he runs Richard childress racing. Lol. Underrated. LMAO
@@jcearnhardt393 ... I’ve known of his genius since the Gant era, but his name is somehow never mentioned among the “Titans” of the sport, like “Suitcase” Jake, Leonard Wood, Waddell Wilson, Chad Knaus, Ray Evernham, Fennig, Grubb...hell, even Letarte and Gustafson get more public mentions than AP!
And a front office position at RCR like Vice President of Competition is nice, but to me, he should be in NASCAR’s front office, and in the Hall of Fame.
@@twoblacklabs904 my friend you mentioned some "heavy hitters" except for letarte and Gustafson which has no business in the conversion at all. Sounds like to me you been a fan along time like myself. Knowing this we both know andy was the one who really " up the game" so to speak " with bending the rules as far as trying new things which really isn't cheating because there is no rule on it which knaus became a master of and put more rules in book then all crew chiefs together. But you are correct andy should be in the hof. His innovations on them cars, the way he resigned the way the pit the cars is still the way it's done today. At RCR they thave a system during the race that tells them the best strategy at the time of the race(, 2 tire, 4 tires, pit don't pit etc) which is very advanced even compared to gibbs, Hendrick. Haas teams. That is all andy petree design . That guy is a absolute genius, he just happens to work on race cars instead of rockets. Computers or people.
@@jcearnhardt393 Gustafson has a championship, 33 wins, average finish of 14.4, He's top tier. Everyone hes been with has gotten better and be a top 10 team, except casey mears, which there was no help for him
@@jesuschristislord6790 seriously he works under chad knass who in turn works at Hendrick. You realize we are talking abiut andy petree. Half of what crew chiefs do today andy invented and not just at the track, comparing allen to andy is like comparing bubba wallace to cale Yarbrough. Lol. Probably got you on that name.
This series with Andy is great. I still miss him from his TV days. Was one of my favorite commentators.
He was with Dale Jarrett right
@@elliteMonkeygaming yes I believe that’s right.
he was great with ESPN in the booth with Bestwick and Jarrett , Punch in the pits
Bring Andy back every week! He is amazing. Pure NASCAR.
I wish he and evernham would open up more about what they did. Having the crew chiefs on the show is what makes it.
There has to be video footage of this Q run With the spoiler laying down.
Petree 'the key to cheating..is you got to do it right' on cam and everything -holy wow. Petree my new bestest buddy now.
Crew Chief Petree is a natural storyteller! So many great stories...would love to hear the off the camera stories!! 😎🤙🏽
Dale you should have a segment where the guests bring their favorite pieces and parts collected from racing in and discussing the story behind them! You can call it Yard Sale: 😉
GOOD IDEA.
Gary Nelson was one of the most innovative cheaters in NASCAR. Who better than him to try to catch cheaters.
Just like the guys they hire in all the Vegas casino's for catching cheaters, were once the best cheaters themselves..........or the government hiring ex-cyber crooks, lol.
Everyone cheated ... still do
That's why Bill France Jr. wanted him.
Then Pemberton was put in charge and everyone talked of how he was the worst offender yet was now in charge of stopping the cheating/innovation! Funny how NASCAR does that!
You misspelled "Benedict Arnold"!!
LOL 😆
So many of these podcasts/shows are absolute gold. As a 38 year old who grew up watching these guys, I love looking back at all the stuff that went on when I was watching these guys as a kid. The stories are great and really puts the sport in different, more realistic light to me.
That was the best story ! man what i wouldn't give to have been there i could listen to these stories all day must have been a hoot !
Dirty Mo Media, thank you for all the Characters you bring on your show, those are all my favorite episodes with the history and how things were. I know Junior sometimes feels bad and thinks people want new and up to date stuff. look thru these comments and there is plenty of folks that would love to listen for hours and hours of history on Nascar (racing in general) keep up the great work truly enjoy the podcasts
I love the interviews with the crew chiefs and how they found ways to work in the "grey areas" of the rules and not get caught.
I remember hearing a story from a family member about a dirt racer who has some success asphalt racing tried to qualify with a Petty Motorsports chassis he bought. When it came time for pre-race inspection, the car he brought was dq'd as "it was highly illegal".
These are the stories that need to be told, amazing information that know body would have thought of other than the great crew chiefs and engineers. Andy Petree is a genius.
I worked at Hickory speedway as official in 03. Andy showed up one night with Paul Menard in tow and Andy's late model. I wasn't working late models but when they were lining up on grid, I got a radio call to go to the tech shed and not let Paul drive through it. That's all I knew at that point. So I stopped Paul and he called me over to the side of the car to ask why he was DQed. The race was going by then and I couldn't quite hear what he said so as soon as I got out from in front of the car, Paul zipped right by me to his pit. Left me standing there like a dope. The rest of the story is that Andy brought his own RR tire and it was caught by the late model inspector on the grid. Glory days.
I love it.
The facial expressions Andy gives telling the stories is like he just conceived the spoiler cheat and Harry just drove by him for the first time!!!
dale jr this just keeps getting better and better . l wish the time could be moved an hour later . l keep missing the full show . maine
They never show the full "show" here on youtube........all of these shows are just segments of the entire podcast. But under this video ( and all others for this channel ), simply click on "SHOW MORE"......it will drop down & you'll see the link to LISTEN ( audio only ) to the entire podcast. There's 3 different links to choose from. It's totally free. On Junior's website, you can click & listen to every podcast Junior has ever done in its entirety. Enjoy.
@@howabouthetruth2157 yes but i want to see the whole show . i just don't get home in time . but thanks for the info
@@lpete2766 You're very welcome. I don't know that they have video of "the entire show"......but don't quote me on that. Maybe it's on TV..........but I quit watching TV altogether years ago. Nothing but internet for this ole country boy, and I'm all the better for it.
@@howabouthetruth2157 l don't watch much on tv anymore it's mostly garbage . but i like dale's show . p.s my dad and watched the 500 starting back in the early 60's.
If only we had people with personalities like Andy Petree, Paul Andrews and Tony Glover in NASCAR nowadays. Hell, I'd probably even watch it still if we did.
Stop living in the past. This why people like you get left behind the rest of society.
@@tcmusic6429 Exactly. I'm surprised he didn't include "and bring back the rebel flag too".
Love listening to Andy. Always loved that Square D 55 Car he fielded; had some great schemes
I loved this 2 day interview. Excellent work. Joanne Curtright
These stories are so good. Kudos guys youre doing it big and doing it right
I agree with you Andy is great people and he is a person that is always thinking about moving things around the box even on the outside. Good job Andy great conversation.
Hello Dale and Mike and Andy great story's from Nascar past this is why I have been a fan of Nascar since the mid 70s Wishing everyone there well Take Care Guys
Love Andy's stories
I thought I enjoyed the drivers but the crew chiefs like Andy are better! This is so good.
This was awesome!! What an honest, hilarious story telling episode. 10.9 from this Canadian judge. Lol
loved this episode as well!!! how are ya now Zeke?
Good ‘n’ you? This episode & the podcast is in my top 5!! Glad you really liked this vid Newall.
@@ZekenStreak not so bad! hope they have him on again!
There u go Dirty Mo, two votes for more episodes with Andy. :)
When is Gary coming on? Need to hear his reaction to these stories.
These are some of the best stories ever
"The key to cheatin' is, you gotta do it right. You gotta REALLY...DO...THE...WORK." LOLOL
It was the trap door for the bbs was where the jack went, so when the car was jacked up, the door was covered. “Go ahead and find it”
awesome series... so fun to watch.
Junior thanks for the content. My father was a long time diesel mechanic. His old machinist chest had one word in the lid: actuator. He was an old farm boy & only had a 2nd grade education, but very intelligent fellow.
Gold.
Great video.
Andy Petree is awesome. I could listen to his stories for days.
This is such a great interview!!!!
Watched this video 3 times still laughing good job
I miss the days of Nascar when RAD dominated the Superspeedways.
Those DEI cars were awesome!
I’m a huge Dale Jr fan (or as DW calls him “June-Bug” 😁). I was sad to see him retire at a young age. But a driver knows when it’s time. I don’t know if I heard why, but I know it was after that bad concussion he sustained. I’m wondering if that was the reason. Anyway, this channel came up in my feed. I’m so happy to have seen it. I subscribed before watching any of the videos. It’s Dale Jr. That’s all I needed to see!!
Great show🥇
That's insane. I hope I can hear him talk about his trials and tribulations of running his own team
I was picking up parts at Hendricks shop during the Winston/600 in 1997. Andy came in the back door looking for door bars, I think he and Ray shared info or Andy caught a good look at the T-Rex car. Unfortunately Gary N. Outlawed them the next week.
Dale Jarrett, Jimmy Makar & Andy Petree aka...The 3 Amigos! now there is a Dale Jr download to do 💪
Good story man!
Love hearing these stories. Nascar is nowhere near what it used to be. I very seldom watch NASCAR anymore because of how BORING it has become from stage races and all the rules .
There goes Dale jr with these good video titles 🔥 lol I couldnt help but click 💯
Classic!
this is so awesome.
Phenomenal
That's good stuff right there boys!!!
I've heard of a spoiler that had an extension coming from the center and the spoiler once. Who was the driver and car owner who was caught with that on the car ?
I got a suggestion for someone to interview, has dozens of stories. Use to work with dale seniir and junior johnson
" To cheat You Gotta do it Right. "
You KNOW Andy did a great job of concealing the entire spoiler angle actuator system, when a guy ( Leo ) who was told it's in the car, does a painstaking search & can't even detect it, lol. "I don't believe you have it in this car".........so Andy trips the switch and the spoiler drops like magic.......LOL!!! Man, that's priceless. I would've loved to have been there to see the look on Leo's face when that spoiler dropped.
Wish Andy would have done more in broadcasting. Dude's got stories.
He built a shop not to far from where I was born and raised in Henderson county NC several years ago. Im not sure if he still owns the building or not. For many years you could see race cars through the windows when driving by.
Andy was awesome on ESPN
I’d love to hear him, Ray & Chad Knaus all share stories & “tricks”.
Awsome
Y’all need to get Allen Bestwick on here!
If you ain't cheating, you're not winning. 😎
That is good stuff.😅😅
Absolutely... Hall of Fame needs an exhibition of Crew Chief Inovation
Anyone got the TH-cam link where Ray was talking about this?
Great story. I loved the days when teams could find gray areas in the rules to take advantage of. Bending and breaking the rules sometimes was part of the fun for teams. It's only cheating if the officials catch you. Everyone wants to be the next Smokey Yunick.
Please raise your volume on these slightly. I love these but constantly they get too quite to hear sometimes even with the volume maxed.
That's a problem on your end.
A real free market. The Ron Paul Liberty Report.
I'm wondering if that deck lid would fit a mid 80s monte Carlo and if he would sell it for a street car ?
Now NASCAR needs the Andy Petree spoiler to pass on the tracks with the tapered spacer.
I got a good laugh.😂😂😂
This is exactly what I love about all sports and competition. If u don’t get caught cheating and do it right, then it’s no longer called cheating, but gamesmanship.
Andy is a master mind.
Legend
Andy and Dale Jr never herd anyone but dales father use neutral to describe a loose race care but one of the pit reporter in 1994 or 1995 used the same word neutral to describe a loose iroc car hope someone sees this
Its amazing the stories and cheats you hear about, I pitted for a good friend of Alan Kulwicki and we had a few beers at the shop one night and the cheating stories Alan told were amazing.
So I decided to do some research regarding what year this would have been, and it would have been 1992, as that was Nelson's first year as a "cheater catcher" (VP of competition). (He was Kyle Petty's crew chief from '89 to '91)
Just listened to the latest DJD episode that has Dean Jones talking about this. Can't wait to see the actual video. Also kinda funny how much Andy embellished this story vs what really happened
Haha I know I thought the same thing.
This dude took Harry Gant to 4 wins in a row at age 51. Should have been 5 in a row but Dale got him. No driver since has looked like winning 5 in a row.
Harry Gant Skoal 33 only dip I chewed, when I chewed.
Ricky Rudd got caught he built a lincoln body with adjustable rear spoiler he got caught nascar confiscated the deck lid and fined him 50,000 if memory serves me right
I thought it was something like a hydraulic rear spoiler (it was May 1996 at Talladega)... At the time it was the biggest fine in NASCAR history which if I remember right might have been $100,000
When the Hall of Fame adds it's "Smoky Yunich" wing then teams can drop off their inventions at the back door
That’s hilarious 😂
After hearing a couple of these stories, I am left to wonder which crew chief that Childress hired tried the most “innovative” rule bends while employed there...
I'd say Shelmerdine...
Who’s rewatching this after the guy who actually built the decklid was on
6:42
Nascar should have shows like this on the pre race shows
Olds Delta 88: Rent on Friday, Win on Sunday.
Life advice kids, if your gonna cheat right you really have to put in the work.
Everyone cheats. It’s just some get caught. Lol
Andy Petree came up with DRS!
It's only cheating if they find it
We all remember Papa Dale's "HALLOW BOLTS". They passed tech for month's before they figured those out.
I've been a huge NASCAR fan since it first aired on TV, and that one is slipping my mind. So what was the deal with these bolts ya just mentioned? I would appreciate hearing about that, and thanks in advance.
PRICELESS TREASURED STORIES THAT ARE PRICELESS TREASURED MEMORIES AND BLESSINGS NOW!!! LOVE HEARING THESE STORIES ESPECIALLY THE CHEATING STORIES 🤣🤣🤣🤣 IT ALWAYS AMAZED ME AT HOW CREATIVE THESE GUYS WERE AT FINDING THINGS TO GIVE THEM AN ADVANTAGE AND THEY NEVER GOT CAUGHT 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 PURE GOLD TREASURED MEMORIES AND SUCH A BLESSING 🙏🙏💞🤗💞🤣🤣🤣
he said was it his?
I love Larry Mac, but Andy should be America's crew chief
I LOVE THESE CHEATING STORIES!!
Somebody is lying...
Get Andy back on with Danny Lawrence, now THAT would be fun....
If you ain’t cheating, your not trying.
All the characters that made Nascar Nascar are all gone.
The Tale of the Tell-Tale Spoiler.
