- In Part 2 of Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s conversation with championship-winning crew chief Andy Petree, they dive into Petree’s time at Richard Childress Racing and his relationship with Dale Earnhardt.
Petree goes into detail about his transition to taking the ‘premiere crew chief job in the sport’ for Dale Earnhardt at Richard Childress Racing. Once at RCR, Andy shares the reaction from the team seeing him walk in and the resistance he initially faced.
Early on, a ‘come to Jesus’ meeting between Dale, Richard and Andy forced the driver and crew chief to bond. Hear why they needed that and what happened later in the season when Andy brought the first car built under his direction to the race track.

Andy is telling the truth, I worked at RCR in 98 and 99 with Larry and Kevin.
RCR was a great place to work, I'm retired now.

@@alanhyde1261 I worked at Daytona, Darlington, and Talladega 1996-2006 as part of the security/safety teams. Dale Sr had a huge integrity level and cheating was never part of the program with him. He always personally inspected every race car that he ever drove, anything not right got corrected or he'd refuse to drive it. 1998 Daytona #3 car, Dale Sr insisted that the car wasn't right on Saturday morning. By Sunday's race, he was satisfied. He would later state that race car was the best race car that he ever drove. Dale Sr had the abilities to drive a crappy race car and still do well with it. One Saturday morning, he and Neil Bonnet were out on the Daytona track, by themselves, for an IROC practice. It was foggy/cloudy but they did it anyway. Dale Sr saw how the foggy air reacted when close to Neil's car in different situations. That day, Dale Sr learned how to use airflow as an advantage.

Thank God JR “GETS IT”. There are literally millions of fans of SR and JR and he’s willing to bring in people that know a lot about both SR and JR to let the fans in on it. Hands down the best racing show/pod cast on the air. Love how relaxed JR and Mike are no matter who the guest is. Keep up the good work, us fans are loving it and want more of it.

Ive always said, we got jipped out of having Dale Sr around in his post race career. Could you imagine Dale Sr in the Booth, or with a show, ..or even ON Dale Jrs podcast?! Oh, the stories we would hear! We got jipped!
@@kidwave1 We got "gipped" but he died doing what he ALWAYS wanted to do. Live up to Ralph and his own ambition. I sure wished he were here. He'd be 68 this year and I imagine he would have drove well into his 50s. But from an inside source, he wanted to retired at 55. He was the king of car control (take the "pass in the grass" out because he passed no one). I was never a Sr fan until I met him in 1999 at his dealership in Kannapolis. He had 500 people or more in line and spent 10 minutes talking to me about Kevin Harvick and Mike Skinner. I wished I would have had a god-awful cellphone to record it. He autographed a wooden clock of him and Davey Allison crouching on the bricks (Indy) in 1993 for a tire test. His last win....F****** epic. But of course, my man, now, is Harvick, who Sr chose to be his teammate in 2002. And in 2007 Harvick CLOSED the deal at the Daytona 500. I hated to see Martin lose but as a Harvick fan for 24 years, it was bliss. I can only imagine what Sr would tell Jr on the podcast...but we have stories and history. He would have won at least 30 more races and an 8th. I think Jimmie Johnson retired for that sole purpose and went to Indy (though no wins in 3 years because of rule changes). Kevin H winning in the third race of hi...s career at the third race after Sr died is legendary. You cannot script NASCAR. You cannot script a 3400 lb car. Stone Cold can script something or any of the AFW guys, but not racing. They WON and WON off of skill determination and courage. I hope that Harvick runs a white and orange numbered paint scheme again. And ironically, as I write for a few racing websites, I see the #4...that Ernie I vacated for the #28. Do any of you know that he specifically wanted to drive the car because he killed Davey's championship in 92'? So ironically, my man is in the #4 and Sr picked well. Allgaier is awesome and should have a CUP ride. Hornaday was great, and Jeff Green in 2000. Let us always CELEBRATE and not denigrate our love--racing. Sr is smiling at Jr now for what he does.

My dad volunteered back in 1973-4 to work on Ed Wittacker's car in Bristol. He said when he first got there tools were everywhere/out of place. So the first thing he did was clean every tool and organize them in the tool boxes so he could grab a tool instead of spending time looking for it! Lol. He really helped Ed improve his car and team by showing them how to be organized. My dad was 25-6 years old at that time. He went on to lease and run Plaza Exxon just a few miles north of Bristol Motor Speedway. I worked there on Saturdays pumping gas. I was 10-14 working there.
This is so cool. Hearing about what different drivers like Harry and Dale like in car . Also bonding story was great.

That amazes that Dale wanted a car that was tight. I figured he would want a loose car because you can make more speed with a loose car. Unless he wanted long run speed.

@@ethanweeter2732 you sure done want to be lose at rockingham... the rock was tough... you had to conserve tires for long runs, or you would just smoke them, so which each lap is stock car at the The Rock would get looser and looser LOL turn those tires into liquid rubber. That was Rockingham
@@joeyjohnson4826 I know man. Watched a race or two there on TV. Hard to compare to seeing it live though. The Rock was also a hard track to drive without the tire wear. Why do many good drivers won there.

I feel like everyone is learning about Dale Sr. as well as Jr. and I love it that he wants to share it.
He is that’s why he had these guys on the podcast. We’ve all heard jr say they were just starting to get close. Man that would be tough. I’ve fought for dads attention forever. Still don’t get it. Had to just let it go and make my best effort to stay in contact call anc go see him. All I can do.

A real innovator. What a crew chief Andy was. Very very underrated,savvy. Extending the tires to get the most stable setup without sacrificing speed, amazing. Winning 4 in a row with a 51 yr old driver, amazing.

Dale Sr always wanted his "ride" to be built his way despite what the crew chief, or the team, wanted. Usually, Dale Sr was right. He could do things with the #3 cars that other drivers thought were impossible to do.

I've always like Andy! Even in the TV booth.
When I set up my dirt track stocker years ago, I knew from Sr that loose was fast, so I had negative camber in the left front so I was not cranking hard in the corners and she was pulling hard left on the straights. A little Swedish flick with a throttle burp and she would just arc her way gracefully through the corner with little oversteer inputs to the right from me.
I had a low powered car, so I knew I could never beat them on the straights, but could really surprise them in the corners, give them the inside down the next straight, out drive them on the outside but go wide and set up a crossunder, they would overshoot that corner, I was hard on the throttle when they were fighting for control and I would be 30 feet or so ahead off 2 or 4 and they could never catch me again. Now I know where I got that idea.

Petree sets the car up for Dale to win. Dale: 'thats how you bound right thur' i love it...i knew Dale was old school short track days, dirt trackin set up. caster and 18pnds in the right rear. anything to get that damn car to turn and stay turning. see, the car automaticaly will dive down into the corner and want to go left..so your on the wheel turning to the right to counter (thats what being up on the wheel means to me) as a race car driver..i never tuned left on the track..the car did. GetUsumofThat Jr.

He didn't want to ask what it meant so figured it meant neutral steering positiom.
