Thank you so much. I have a 2018 MKX 2.7 T. and I would assume it's the same. It's so hard to find videos of this year and models. Wish i was younger to crawl under a car lately... I enjoyed doing it before. Im having the dealership 🙄 ..do mine. I just bought it and it has 40 thou on it and im sure its never been done along with the rear end too.
If you take off the T50 bit from the wrench,It will suffice to undo the tight sump plug,,You don't have to keep using the wrench,,Also you will destroy your torque wrench if you keep using it as a normal wrench..
Thank you for posting this video! I have a 2016 Edge Sport. Just did the trans fluid and about to start on the PTU. This was helpful to see where things are located.
Good video. Couple ideas…..take off he front right tire to get easier access. I filled mine from the top through a tube and funnel. I removed 23 oz and filled 28 oz. The T50 is a must……mine were tight.
Great ideas! I didn't measure how much removed but it was clearly not full. Honestly, if an owner did this once during it's lifetime, that is probably enough to get them to 150K if not 200K.
Been waiting on this! Ford said it would be $100.00, I bought a Quart of Mobil 1 75w 140 synthetic and now I will be doing this myself every 20,000 miles. I am at 18,500 now.
Thanks for the video..Yes…you should have measured and consulted your owners manual.I could tell how fast it drained it wa not even close to a quart.I looked it up and a 2018 edge takes 23 ounces I believe.Too many people are just pumping these full like a rear differential and like you and I believe this could cause excess pressure build up.I just did my 2015 Lincoln mkx and it calls for 12 ounces. It has no drain so had to pump it out and got 12 ounces out so that’s what went in.I actually fished a hose down from engine bay into fill hole and had a helper pour exact amount in from above while I made sure hose stayed in hole.No mess this way and got exact amount in.Hard to gauge amount with those pumps.
I appreciate your comments. Doubled checked Ford's 2018 owners manual for the 2.7L Ecoboost and the PTU has a fill of 23.7 fluid ounces, which is 0.74 quarts. The Amsoil website shows it as 1.5 pints, which is 0.75 quarts. Messing around with this thing a few times tells me that is just beneath the fill plug. So I need to watch this a bit closer than I have been but I still don't think I'm jeopardizing it too much. Another thing is that it's hard to get it just right with this super thick gear oil. Oil is left in the pump, in the hose, and in the bottle. Much much harder than engine oil and transmission fluid that is much smoother.
He used hose that was already there going to breather. Yours may not have breather hose. Mine only has a breather cap. His method took a long time but can’t remember if access to fill plug was an issue.
I just changed mine tonight on a 2017 fusion Sport 2.7t 32k miles never serviced. The fluid looked brand new! I noticed the fusion ptu is cooled though, it has 2 coolant hoses going to it. Went ahead and replaced with the same Amsoil severe gear you used. 👍👍
That's Awesome! Did not know the Fusions were cooled! Very nice and I'm sure a great thing to know to give you that peace of mind. Using Amsoil and with it cooled, you are probably good for 50-60K easy.
@@DougMount I was pleasantly surprised. I wonder why they didn't cool the ptu on the Edge sport? Ford does some weird things sometimes. But you're right. Knowing I have Amsoil in there now makes me feel much better. Next weekend I'm changing the trans fluid with Amsoil signature series fuel efficient ATF. I might wait another 10k to do the rear diff. Plan on keeping this awhile 😎
@@SuperchargedJester Same here - planning on doing the tranny fluid soon. Hoping to video it as well. The fill tube for the tranny is a little tricky to locate on these.
Maaaaan, I wish doing this on my 2015 SEL with the 3.5L V6 was that easy. The exhaust literally drops in front of the fill and drain plugs which both face the side of the casing. Gives you about 2-3" clearance between the case and the heat shield. We bought it used back in April with 110K miles. The carfax didn't mention the PTU ever getting serviced so I feared for the worst changing out the PTU fluid. The top plug looked awful nasty. The sludge was caked on with the consistency of dry clay which really freaked me out but I'm surprised and happy to say the oil came out a dark but clean amber. I'll be swapping the fluid another 2 times in 500 mile intervals just to be sure the inside is clean.
Great news that you bought a 110K Edge and someone actually cared enough to maintain the PTU. If all goes well with the engine/tranny/waterpump you should be looking at over 200K on that Edge.
Yes sir! Will be doing that shift to Amsoil here maybe at 40 or 50k. Need to do some more research on that though. Congrats on picking up a Sport! That 2.7L is a lot of fun.
No - just noted how deep they were seated before removing and put them back around them same, nice and snug. Recent checks for leaks @28K and nothing so it's been all good.
Doug, helpful video, but just a few comments. Get someone to help with the lighting. And second - editing. We don't need to see everything, just what went right.
Great job! Please tell me. What color is the new and old transmission oil of your car? What is the difference? Does the transmission have a cooling system?
New transmission fluid/oil is a red-pink color while the old is burgundy and if it's really bad will be near black and have a burnt smell. Yes there is a transmission cooler. Check out this: drive.google.com/file/d/1dmOFQNy3taKEqH6eEI0FxczzQkNdrdqA/view
Those 3 are the main ones for sure! Next is flushing out the cooling system and replacing with Amsoil coolant. Going to do that at 60K. The brake fluid will also need done but that will be a little while yet when you replace the brake pads. Maybe at 75K but depends on how one drives/brakes hard or not. Ford did away with the hydraulic power steering so it's all electric now, no need to change that fluid out.

Thank you. I needed the length to get the leverage. Shouldn't have to do that next time as it was super tight from the manufacturer.

Agree - every 20K for the PTU. It's pretty easy as you can see. I'm thinking Tranny drain and refill at 30K.

Thanks. Do what I and fish hose down to fill hole and pour it in that way. Gets exact amount in. No mess.
@@wish2fish37 I'll definitely look into that method. FordTechMakULoco did a video on that for an Explorer I believe.

Or you take the sensor out fill it till fluid is about to drip out of there reinstall sensor and fill plug, done.

Yeah I just did one today almost impossible. Without me having a pit to use idk if I could have got it.
Thanks. Did this on 17 Edge 2.0l. Had to remove turbo intercooler line to get to fill plug.
Very good! Did not know how similar this is to the 2.0 Ecoboost... Did much fluid come out of the intercooler line when you removed it?
@@DougMount nothing came out
TP-50 is the torx bit you need.
You don’t use a torque wrench as a breaker bar. Use to tighten after hand tightened with a regular ratchet.
Thanks!
Nice video 👍🏻 ever thought about changing differentials fluids too? Just bought a sport myself

Did you set a specific torque when putting back the fill and drain plugs?

Hey Doug, have you done the RDU (rear diff unit) fluid exchange yet?
Not yet. I have everything just need to get it done. I'll definitely video it when I do.

@@DougMount I recommend using the new Ford yellow coolant
I'm hoping the 2019 edge st is the same
I don't have one but with same engine and transmission I would think it is very close.
Just make sure that you lossen the fill plug 1st!
Yes indeed!🙂
Super‼️

Thank you 👍
