Yeah, except he also used live auto-tune - which is a thing. It's (sadly) awkwardly recognizable for those of us who have worked with the stuff. Eddie Vedder had a chest cold when he did his live version of Black on MTV Unplugged and didn't need that kind of help. This is one of the fleece performances of all-time that duped tens of millions into thinking it was something special or historic in music. Just digital magic, every time he held a note for any length of time, or transitioned from one tone type to another, or did a climb. The climbs are embarrassingly obvious when it sounds like his voice was pushed through Mario Paint. We have seen Frankie Valli use it in recent years, but he's in his 80's. That doesn't mean David hasn't had classical training, or a great vocal coach; he can afford all of that stuff. But he can also afford to use great technology, which he did.

As an old man, I have been listening to music for many many years, and every now and then someone comes along and pokes the music industrie with a shit covered stick and says " hey listen to this." Takes a song not within their usual genre and drizzles it with their genius and tallent and BOOM, instant classic. This song is amazing in of itself, I have always loved Simon an Garfunkles original version, but this transends theirs and becomes my ultimate favourite. David sings it in such a way as to spear through my chest and impale my heart, I love it.

Him and Garfunkel later starting preforming the song in The Village, NY, and after being picked up by Columbia, recorded it as their first single off their first album Wednesday morning 3AM. It was a commercial flop causing S&G to break up and go their separate ways.
It wasn't until 1-1/2yrs later that it started to get local radio play. Their producer from Columbia remixed it, putting in the electric instruments and drums, shooting it up the charts. S&G, separately found out about it only by browsing through the magazine Billboard top 100. Paul was pissed about the remix, and didn't care for it, but neither of them wanted to look a gift horse in the mouth, so they signed back on with Columbia and released their 2nd album titled same as the song, but dropped the plural "s" calling it simply "The Sound or Silence" Simon has said in many interviews, it had no deep political or social message, he was barely 21 when he wrote it, and said it was just a young man with angst writing about people not talking to each other. He also says he is happy though, that people got their own message from it.

I really like Disturbed's take on this song. I spent all of junior high and highschool in choir. I had a bit of a rasp in my voice at times and got called out for it. Little did the people calling me out for the rasp know that a lot of the time it was deliberately done and my directors loved it while I injected a little into the solo parts of my performances. I was in the All State Honors Choir throughout highschool and I made the All Northwestern United States Honors Choir every year I was eligible (freshmen are not allowed to participate). My highschool choir also went on foreign tours my sophomore and senior years. I have also performed at several Pops concerts performed by my choirs. I have actually met artists whose songs that I have performed and was complemented by both Lionel Ritchie (All Night Long) and Bruce Springsteen (I'm on Fire) my choir was also praised by several artists for performing "We Are the World" while in Japan and Hong Kong. I was actually asked by Willie Nelson for a copy of the recording of my highschool choir when I lived in Texas and happened to have the concert tape playing when I drove up to his bar in Elm Mott. I was lucky to be trained in singing by 2 of the greatest choir directors to ever live in my opinion. You will never find teachers who love music as i had in Boyd Holland (junior high school, may he rest in peace he passed away my sophomore year of highschool from cancer. He put off treatment for lung and brain cancer my freshman year of highschool because he refused to let down his students by leaving 2 months into the year. By the end of the year it was too late to save him.) and Renee Henderson in highschool. She was known worldwide for taking her choirs on international tours every 3 years. She has taken choirs to Europe, Asia, and Australia. She taught music and choirs in my school district for 40 years and we figured out when she retired that she had over 34,000 students in her highschool choirs and actually taught 3 generations of the same family. My niece cried for almost a week upon her retirement because my niece had been waiting for 5 years to finally enter highschool so she could learn from Ms. Henderson and "Hendy" as she was known retired the year before my niece reached the ninth grade. I come from a town of 5,000 people and the highschool only had 450 students but the choir averaged 265 students every year for over 25 years.

I saw a short interview of Paul Simon where he said that not only was this their favorite cover, he thought it brought out the meaning of the song better than their version! He actually liked this better that what they originally did. (or that was my take??) Either way, when you have the full support of the creators of a piece, it's pretty special.
Love the reactions to this song. It is VERY MUCH my own reactions... I had no idea this guy could sing like this because all I ever heard was the guttural screaming before. I have since heard more of this man's great voice and hope he pursues it even more. HE SHOULD!
More impressive still, the man had the FLU as he was singing this and still belted it our wonderfully.
I STILL PREFER The Original Official Video of this Cover. The opening with the broken and silent instruments really set the stage for the whole brilliant video and brilliant performance and recreation of a classic.

In the era when Simon and Garfunkel recorded the original, dark songs would not get airplay. So the musical sound of the song could not match the lyrics.
At the same time, the dichotomy of the dark lyrics set against the upbeat music embodied the societal conflict of the time

Id agree, that the cover is actually a more accurate portrayal of the lyrics and spirit of the original. A little too dark for the ‘plucky’ sound of folk, but S & G lived at a time when it was the sound of revolution and defiance. It was the right genre and sound to give birth to this amazing classic. The adaptation is gorgeous, and his deep and varied range and gravely yet highly controlled scream-harmonies are perfect.

He has one of the strongest voices and has quite a large range as well. He's one of the few singers who regularly performs live (not pre-recorded). Not only that, but he tinkers with his songs for the live performances, not simplifying the vocals, but stepping up the complexity. If you enjoyed David Draiman's voice, you will also enjoy Serj Tankian. He is also a classically trained vocalist, who became famous in the heavy metal space (lead singer of System of a Down). Maynard James Keenan is another one (lead singer of Tool) to check out.

No, it's still Simon and Garfunkles.
It will always be Simon and Garfunkles.
Dave does an amazing job covering it, but it will never be his song.

Your comment that this is Dave's song
Is so wrong on hundred of different ways.....really I know nobody who has any knowledge of music that isn't 12 yrs old likes this pathetic cover song
Dave will just be known for this crap
Simon and Garfunkel will be talked about for ever

@@williammoore841 this has to be the dumbest thing I've read all day. I agree this isn't Dave's song, and op is an idiot for saying that, but you are also not the brightest crayon in the box. Disturbed is one of the best selling rock/metal bands of today. They will be remembered for many many years to come. This is also not a "pathetic" cover, this is lyrical art, same as it was with the original version, just a different style. Not better, and most definitely not worse.
In case you missed all the comments talking about the "sickness", he's known for a lot of other things besides this cover.

He absolutely brings it in this version! I think most of the audience was in slight shock, listen to their reaction. CRAZY you could tell he wasn't feeling 100%,talk about being tuned in. Keep smiling young lady, well done.

The funny thing about heavy metal is that it takes serious chops, musically. Most people just play it off like it is just noise but these musicians and singers are incredibly talented, I am always happy when eyes are opened to it. Great reaction.

Where he transitions stylistically from subway halls/tenement halls, he shows such incredible vocal control. Superb.

Yes David said later that he had the flu and was running a 102 temp during this performance. He said it had caused enunciation issues and he had a hard time controlling his pitch, and yes he was classically trained as a cantor. He has since way surpassed his ongoing training. He is or is one of the greatest metal vocalist of all time. His range and control of his voice is amazing.
