He is such a powerful performer , I remember seeing him on Conan and when he started that raspy fry towards the end it gave me chills . For a metal singer he has a beautiful seamless register that has a surprisingly broad range. Some people are just very powerful like Vitas in Opera 2 when he hits that one note that curls your toes
with her reaction, I'm not surprised the mommy monologue was skipped. honestly, that part was one I don't mind skipping. Funny trivia. There was a radio station in Fort Smith, AR two (maybe 3) years ago that played this song on continuous loop for several days straight, clipped perfectly so that it looped around and done in such a way you wouldn't notice unless specifically listening for it. Probably caught about 3 hours of it while I was in town for a week long training.
@@craigf6277 They used the clean radio edit for the official music video. I don't think I've heard the full version on the radio before haha. Somehow this song (the full version) aways made it onto my mix CDs. I remember driving to a family event with my aunt in the car when it came on. She mentioned she liked the beat and all I could think of is I need to find a way to skip it.
@@craigf6277 to be honest... That monologue is what sold me to this song. It's so primal and uncomfortable but yet so real. Sadly. Abusive mothers are a sad reality we shouldn't shy about
This band has sold over 17 million records and i believe 5 debuts at number one on the charts...not a new band at all...they have been at this for years! Im very happy that you reacted to this song...opening the minds of people that may never experience this type of music is what this is all about! Cheers! Well done!
as we all then realized she was listening to the radio edit so this section wasnt even in the song, i missed it quit a bit, spills so much anger and rage that you can really feel it.
At 7:00 I think the term you are looking for is “vocal fry”, which is something he is known for. Other metal/screamo enthusiasts might refer to this as “shredding” (the voice). I use it as a catalyst to growl 1st octave notes.
They cut out the "uncomfortable" section in the middle because you couldn't really put something like that on the radio/mtv/etc. It's only in the album version of the song.
I personally think, while it's not the most impressive set of lyrics I've ever heard, you can take this song as an explanation using sickness as a metaphor for the anger and guiltless feeling welling deep inside from an abusive relationship with his mother. Without the uncomfortable part, the song loses context, really. Art can be provocative, but it is not passionless. To censor a song to water down their art. We can all be adults and enjoy the song for exactly what it is: an expression of emotion.

Definitely the Hu. The way Alberich would have sung had Wagner known of this kind of singing. In "Sugaan Essena" you get to see the whole band at work.
@@maggiereneemusic are you thinking about doing another Disturbed song? My I humbly request Prayer again? It's about having a conversation with God. It was released right after 9-11
Nothing that comes out of his mouth, no matter how bizarre the sounds forced. It is just effortless, powerful and moving. I have been amazed by his voice for decades.
Actually, the best part of the video for me was when she was reading the lyrics and got to that part. Her reaction to that was pure gold, and I'd have expected nothing less from such a sweet soul.
Mother or mommy in this case is not actually talking about his mother. Rather it's a metaphor for society or the system which controls "insert an idea or example"
Without that though you still have a very powerful literal interpretation of the impact of child abuse. The mother pouring the hatred into the child, giving them the gift of madness, and draining the humanity from them.
Well metal isn't big anymore in the mainstream eyes so most people have never heard the actual song but they definitely heard that part of the song from all the memes. It's all Rap and Pop now. Hell Rock music isn't even a thing anymore. And most bands who do "Rock" mix it with a ton of pop so I don't even consider them Rock Bands.
I guess I am old, I didn't even know it was a meme, and I am a computer tech. I've seen Disturbed a couple of times in concert though. They always try to bring their shows with other bands and charge minimum price for tickets. I took my son, and his stepbrother, we saw Disturbed, KillSwitch Engage, Lacuna Coil, Chimaera for $20.
Yeah this was definitely a millennial song because I didn't even know it was a meme. When I was a teenager, man, this song played like EVERY DAY its perfect. 😌
YASS!!! The drummer is fantastic. I definitely agree about the capabilities that the singer has regarding the bounce back and forth between the regular and raspy singing. A highly underrated song by Disturbed is "Overburdened". Definitely recommend that one. I would insert the fire emoji here, but this computer doesn't have it, so rock on with all of your endeavors.
Just found your channel, and I LOVE this! As a life long theater kid, I adore the musicality of Disturbed and David's voice. I'm so excited you reviewed this after seeing Song of Silence ❤️
Agreed, The Light is an amazing song..but seriously so is the entire Sickness album. Most bands come something and there are a few good songs on it..but that one is just beginning to end great.
Holy shit, I know I'm old when someone refers to this as "the meme song". What young people don't understand was truly how big this song was when it came out. It was freaking everywhere!

Great breakdown of Disturbed by an opera singer. Glad you enjoyed Dave's voice. I am a over 20 year fan of his. He can growl and sing. It's proven now.

The technique he's using for the uh uh part is called a fry scream but he did glottal stops. A fry scream is when your vocal cords are closed and you push air through them. The way I learned them was by taking a pencil, putting them in between your teeth, then doing a vocal fry ( the grudge voice), and visualize it going up and above the pencil. I would love to see you doing a reaction to some scream tutorials and try them out. Careful though, it's addicting lol.
Thanks for subbing! Welcome to my channel and I appreciate your lovely comment and sharing my videos. Did you also like my other video reactions to metal bands?
Disturbed is one of the best metal bands in being able to go from clean vocals to metal rasping and including both in one song. We all adore David's voice of course. But Dan on piano/guitar, Mike on drums and John on bass guitar truly make the band amazing! Mike's drumming has me mesmerized in some of their songs! They have some many great songs I recommend listening to all of them, a personal favorite Reason to Fight. I'm sure you've seen in other notes how this Down with Sickness is the official and clean version so no scene of abuse screaming. Which way too many people misunderstand anyway. Thinking this is about child abuse when David has stated again and again it "Speaks about the eternal struggle of the individual against the mother culture of society that is constantly trying to beat the child struggling for independence and individuality into submission." As to the famous sound he makes at the beginning it originally wasn't part of the song. "That noise just kind of came one day. The song originally was written and it just had a pause. Mike, his beat is just so tribal, and it just kind of made me feel like an animal."
@@maggiereneemusic I posted on that one too. lol I adore the Hu and loved that you took the time to look up the translation and even clarify things you didn't know. The pursuit of knowledge is never-ending!!
Maggie: cool fact. David Draiman had to develop his rasp style to get around his deviated septum making his high notes sound all stuffed up. After he had it fixed, he just kept singing that way because people reacted well to the raspy style :D

I loved that face, that reaction, with the lyrics. I literally almost choked when you said that you were going to bring up the lyrics. I assumed the video'd just skip that bit, as it usually does, but it's intense as heck. And "The Night" is *MASTERFUL* by them. 🔥
This was THE song that got me into Disturbed. Their covers of Tears for Fears "Shout", called "Shout 2000" and Genesis' "Land of Confusion" are killers.
"Decadence" off the Need for Speed: Modern Warfare (2005) soundtrack for me. And then "Stricken" on one of the Guitar Hero games a few years later. But that "Land of Confusion" cover is great and the video is super interesting.
And now that you've heard actual Disturbed I suggest Perfect Insanity, Asylum, Who Taught You How to Hate, and Prayer And if you want more slower Disturbed songs though... Darkness, The Light, Save Our Last Goodbyes, and A Reason to Fight
Watching a Juilliard trained opera singer jamming to Disturbed is almost an out of body experience. Thank you for not just snobbing your nose to a genre that's not in your wheelhouse. Sooooooo cool.

For a metal singer he has a beautiful seamless register that has a surprisingly broad range.
Some people are just very powerful like Vitas in Opera 2 when he hits that one note that curls your toes
Anyone else lose it when she came to the "mommy" monologue part of the lyrics
LOL! Thank you for your comment. Did you also like my other video reactions to metal bands?
with her reaction, I'm not surprised the mommy monologue was skipped. honestly, that part was one I don't mind skipping.

Me either, I read the lyrics. So evil, so satanic, it makes me want to projectile vomit
At 7:00 I think the term you are looking for is “vocal fry”, which is something he is known for. Other metal/screamo enthusiasts might refer to this as “shredding” (the voice). I use it as a catalyst to growl 1st octave notes.
Thank you for your lovely comment. Hope to see you tonight for my Premiere of a new reaction video to Falling in Reverse?
Omg, I was just watching that. Love Ronnie and Paige, both of them talented and fun characters. Can’t wait to see it!
😍
They cut out the "uncomfortable" section in the middle because you couldn't really put something like that on the radio/mtv/etc.
It's only in the album version of the song.
They play it in full on the radio nowadays
In my market they play that song in its entirety. I am in the bible belt. That said it isn't a particularly impressive piece of music.
We can all be adults and enjoy the song for exactly what it is: an expression of emotion.
the part they cut out is probably bringing the whole song down, not just in lyrics, it sounded like a monologue more than singing.
thats the fun thing with not living in an english speaking country. you can suddenly catch the uncut versions of songs playing inmidst a mall
I am really glad you decided to continue on with this band. You're probably the second vocal coach I can think of who has done that.

no, mommy, don't...
don't skip this part 🤘
True, that is the best part, both musically and emotionally speaking
Mother or mommy in this case is not actually talking about his mother. Rather it's a metaphor for society or the system which controls "insert an idea or example"
Without that though you still have a very powerful literal interpretation of the impact of child abuse. The mother pouring the hatred into the child, giving them the gift of madness, and draining the humanity from them.
@@quzar That's how I interpreted it as a teenager hearing it for the first time, it was particularly poignant with my home life at the time.

Oh my gosh! Everyone doesn’t know about this because it’s a meme. People know this from it being one of the greatest metal songs of the past 20 years.

"Decadence" off the Need for Speed: Modern Warfare (2005) soundtrack for me. And then "Stricken" on one of the Guitar Hero games a few years later. But that "Land of Confusion" cover is great and the video is super interesting.
