Paul Simon said he was blown away when he saw this and to this date it’s his favourite cover
Bear in mind he was sick when he did this.
Truth. He was very upset that the sound engineers used a little auto tune on his voice even though he said he didn't need it
David had the flu he still did great job

Great reaction! David had the flu when he did this, that's why he was sitting on a stool. Trained as a Cantor like his father and grandfather. Paul Simon liked it so much that he linked to it on his social media. (The only version, out of all the other covers that people have done.)
Copy and paste rubbish yet again when will it ever end.
He was feeling under the weather, as he has stated many many many times he had the sniffles that is all, influenza aka the flu is a killer and leaves you totally bed bound and not able to do the simplest of things let alone get dressed travel to a studio and perform live. People love this performance and rightly so but some feel the need to try and make it better than it was by throwing the flu tag around.

My favorite parts of all reactions to this song are A. the part where they start tripping over their words because they're so excited, and B. The point where the sit and stare open mouthed, so entranced that they even forget to react 😂
Whenever he hits the line"people bowed and prayed", I get a tear and chills. I've heard this so many times and it still effects me.

There have been many covers, but IMHO this is how the song should be sung, bringing out the pain of the words, the rawness and hurt of the soul.
I do really love how he weaponizes his signature gritty sound in this song by not using at all until the end of the song to accentuate the lyrics and really give them an extra punch. Then for the last 3 lyrics he takes it away again.

Simon & Garfunkels Version was a gentle Warning, this Version by Disturbe on the other Hand is a stern Indictment
yeah the first was a warning, the second was anger about the warning having been ignored

Then check out Pentatonix's version. People compare that as the "heavenly/angelic"-type version to this one and S&G's.
S&G represents the Boomer naivete about the future. Disturbed represents Gen Xs frustration and anger about the present.
Pentatonix version is terrible and embarrassing for them
part of that nasal quality in David's voice you were talking about, in this case specifically, was there because he was sick at the moment of that show. His performance was still absolutely impressive! He made that song his own.

From what I've head of Disturbed, not a lot, but also quite a bit and definitely well enough, he always seemed to me like he's got a very nasal singing voice. That's his style.
Disturbed is proving something I randomly said 20 years ago, "Just because I don't, doesn't mean I can't".

When he goes to the higher register, it is absolute magic. What a voice.

David Draiman ....one of the best male vocalists on the planet Imho. A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to vocal fry/distortion and back on a dime. He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful tonal properties to it! Loved your reaction Jennifer.

I think this might be my favourite cover ever. To take such a classic song and change it but it still retain its message is a rare gift. Plus David’s voice is something to behold
I always love with reactions of this people always come in skeptical of a cover of this song, then being left stunned.
Stunned is an understatement.
Somehow I missed this jewel when it was first performed by Disturbed.
I went from classic rock music to alternative 30 years ago, for the new, fresh feel that it had.
I have been a fan of Disturbed since The Sickness was debuted.
I am a child of the 60s, and this song is one of my favorites from that era.
You have to have a set of major cojones to even attempt covering a classic of this stature.
After watching it a dozen or so times, with my jaw in the floor, I started looking the reactions of vocal coaches and other 'unwary" listeners.
To my great pleasure, I realized that everyone has near the same "Stupefied" 🤘reaction that I did. Who knew?
David has control, power, and range that stands head and shoulders above any other vocalist today.
Disturbed has made my band 😎bucket list now...
I still find it hard to believe that there's people who haven't heard this. I'm not a metal fan but I love hearing David Draiman singing gentler song, my other favourites are Hold On To Memories and Reason To Fight

I'm a metalhead myself and have heard of Disturb but never actually listened to them until I came across a reaction as a suggestion and went down the rabbit hole, called "disturb the sound of silence reaction videos"
This is one of the few live performances that I like so much I can listen over and over and over and keep finding new small details to relish in... a masterclass of singing by a true vocal master.
I highly recommend watching down with the sickness!! Gives a look at what disturbed is truly like. An makes you appreciate what he did with this song that much more! Love the videos ❤

This is the most brilliant interpretation of any cover . It is superior in every way
Many people think heavy metal is all screaming, loud drums and bass, and guitar riffs. These people often miss amazing talent in musical talent.
But sadly Heavy Metal is often just that!!
This is one of those pieces where I truly believe that regardless of your expectations going in (whether you know of or like Disturbed or not) you come out surprised and thoroughly entertained.
I would like to see all these vocal teachers analyzing this guy actually sing that clearly and with that much power.
This is definitely among the greatest covers ever made. I hadn't had something hit me like this since Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt." If you haven't heard that, we NEED to get a reaction.
One of my favorite covers: The Man Who Sold the World, Nirvana unplugged.
David’s voice, singing these lyrics, in these times, give me chills every time I hear this. How did Paul Simon know that social media would fit to these lyrics. People don’t talk, they complain anonymously, hidden behind their screens.. so good.

He really lays down the full meaning of the words here. Paul Simon was way more subtle, but this is definitive. The song will never re-cover from that performance.

Ms. Glatzhofer, your analysis is excellent. I am old enough to remember the original played on the wireless, but young enough at heart to appreciate the interpretation of time. The power of the human voice can change your life. I worked with a brain surgeon who asked me why do think your brain is in your head? I was puzzled by the question. I admitted I did not know. He replied it's the fastest conduit to your mouth. What you hear and see can be expressed almost instantaneously. This is one way he would assess brain function by the ability to communicate verbally. I learned a lot by listening to you. God bless you from West Texas.
I love this version and consequently I journeyed further into discovering Disturbed. I actually like their more metal songs too. I originally discovered them when I watched the original video when it popped up on TH-cam. Their interpretation of the song and its meaning to the band is incredible!!!! One of my favorites music videos of all time! I’m a 73 year old Grandma!
Oh Jennifer! I LOVED how captivated you looked watching this performance, especially at the very beginning. David Draiman is just amazing and he takes us on a journey with this song and his power is unequaled in my opinion. I am not a metal fan (more Gordon Lightfoot , Home Free and for that matter, Simon and Garfunkel) but this cover was the foot in the door for me to explore Disturbed and although my taste is not for a lot of their music, there are quite a few of their songs bordering on the harder sound that I have come to love but this cover is in a class all by itself. ❤

As a child of the 50s, I grew up with S&G in their prime. This is an unbelievable version of this song, I never imagined that I could like anything more than the original. I've checked out Disturbed's music previously - not really my cup of tea - but chapeau to the singer in particular for this gloriously emotional rendition.
As a male with a reasonably deep voice, I tried your comment about letting it go through the nose and mouth and you're spot on - it not only sounds right, it feels right!

14:10 to me the shift out of distortion in "tenement halls" suggests a gentle and reverent respect for the poorest people mentioned, for families struggling and deserving of quiet and peace...it's genius. Especially after the anger directed at the powerful and eloquent just previously.

I have watched a lot of reaction videos of David Draiman's rendition of "Sound of Silence" and it's interesting to watch the moment when Simon and Garfunkel's original is unseated by Disturbed's version.
Catch and release or grab and release. Simplistic way to describe this performance. He switches from releasing everything to grabbing every line to releasing it again. David's skill is on amazing showcase here.

You don't have to worry about his voice. He's been doing this for like 28 years now and you can judge for yourself how clean his voice still is even though almost every song they do is full on grit

This was the first radio single Disturbed did that was "softer" ... it actually freed them up to release more emotional type of songs, and explore that side of their craft.
I've been a fan of Disturbed for 20 years or so at this point. They're definitely worth a deep dive :D

As someone said, become a musical omnivore. Disturbed is a perfect vehicle for that, especially this cover.
Just because David is a metal singer deluxe, some fail to realize he is a really good vocalist, good range. Warm, smooth, powerful, and soul stirring. He shows these skills off in this song. He builds it! This is a classic song to begin with. EPIC! His band mates are darn good also. And the strings just add more. Beautiful job David....
But the metal vocals he does ALREADY prove he's a really good vocalist. He has already said that this song is easier for him than most of Disturbeds catalog.

As an old fart who grew up with these songs, I rarely prefer the remake to the original, but this is an exception. This version is so good.

Jen, this was a fantastic reaction - thank you! This was the song that introduced me to vocal coach reactors years ago. I saw Disturbed in concert in 2019, and they sound just as good in person. They have dozens of great songs, I hope you try a few more out when you get the chance.

This is one of the "mandatory" songs for vocal coach reactions. Another is Queensryche "Take Hold of the Flame" (live in Japan 1984). Geoff Tate is a beast on vocals, unparalleled for his time. Get ready to hear some amazing notes.
Also if you like Postmodern Jukebox with Haley Reinhart, you have to hear her and Puddles Pity Party doing "Mad World." Puddles has a spectacular voice that will shock you.

this performance was nominated for 2016 song of the year but David Bowie got it posthumously (RIP David Bowie) anyways really great song I have heard it well over 300 times and it never gets tiring

I've gone down literally 1000 rabbit holes since I first saw this video. This version I cry every time. I don't know why but my guess is his voice and the orchestral backup. I'm not a musical person but how anyone can go that low..to that high, with little distortion..that amazese. He Makes you listen to the words.

For those who dont know, David was sick durimg this performance with a cold and 103 degree fever. His best performance of this song EVER!
This cover is just raw not only his voice but it matches the message! Imagine his voice is your past regret ghost? He’s taking you to the past and show you all the mistake you’ve made hence your regret..the more he shows you the more you realized the “should’ve, could’ve done” this deferently and your just breaking down in tears curl up like a baby..and he just walk into the mist n disappear..moral of the story! We live and we learn, all wound heals with times.
Hold On To Memories is another beautiful song by Disturbed. They are just incredible...David Draimans voice is so damn pure and so gritty at the same time. I would love to hear someone say just how many octaves he hits in this song. One of the only times the remake was actually better than the original!
