Same, I grew up listening to this song on the radio in the 1970's (original singers) and never liked it (In my 50's now), it sounded too happy, especially after I understood the reason this song was wrote (JFK assassination). This version gives the gravitas and the feeling this song genuinely deserves.

Simon and Garfunkel were very talented, but I agree. Disturbed have made this song theirs. Similar to Sinead O'Connor's Nothing Compares 2 U. Prince wrote it, and it was OK, but her version really made the song. I absolutely love it when someone steps out of their genre, takes a well-known song, and then knocks it so far out of the park that their version becomes the definitive version of it.

This is my favorite version of this song. When Simon & Garfunkel sang it, way back in 196?, I was in high school, and, while not a “hippie”, politically aware enough to know things needed to change. I always felt that the S&G version was not angry enough. Disturbed fixed that problem for me fifty years later, and I identify as a born-again hippie!

I was a fan of Disturbed before this came out. I knew of David's rough side without knowing about his classical training. When I found this, I had GOOSEBUMPS multiple times, listening to it repeatedly and watching reaction videos. I showed my Mom this because she had always been a huge S&G fan. I first had her listen to snippets of other Disturbed songs (Down With The Sickness and Indestructible, my personal favorite of theirs) so she could get an idea of what they sound like aside from this classic. Then I played this video for her and she also had goosebumps! Days later I found out that Paul Simon liked this version, too! :)
He starts out 'delicate', I think that word describes it very well. He's definitely less 'nasally' here because NOT SICK (but what artist in their right mind would bother to record for an album when their voice is screwy from illness?). He really wanted to do this song real justice. You can't beat a timeless song like this. He has such an awesome sound! I prefer this version because he was not ill.
Disturbed had been a band for a while before they got their most famous song into the soundtrack for a Jet Li movie called The One (2001). After that, the band EXPLODED and people who DO NOT listen to Metal at all, listened to Disturbed (and a small number of them were STILL convinced that Metal is the Devil's music).
YES, Spanish Guitar! That is what I thought! :) I love your reaction!

It's probably the most beautiful song Simon and Garfunkel wrote, but in the time they sang it no classically trained singer would have touched a pop/folk/protest song like this. But I love it when a true artist steps out of their genre, takes a well-known song and knocks it so far out of the park that it becomes the definitive arrangement of it. Like Sinaed O'Connor's Nothing Compares to U, which Prince wrote and performed 1st. He even agreed that it was HER song, he just didn't realise he had written it for her. I like S & G, but Disturbed is who this song was meant for.

Not to take away from the Conan performance, he has a deeper patience during this performance... The notes developed with a deeper feeling. Whether it was due to illness or just live vs recorded performance, it helps build the anger at the end. Adding in the visuals just takes this over the top... In a great way.

You're right about the louder, grittier components being more compact on the live version. That's part of what I love about the video. It takes it's time to rise up to those components. It delivers a bigger reward. Also, the visuals are cinematic and devastating. This is an absolute masterpiece.

Disturbed's reimagining of this song is simply amazing. This early 1960s deceptively quiet social commentary on conformist America in that era becomes a 21st century shriek about where the world is heading without changing a single word. Your reaction and analysis are first class. Getting both together is really fine. Good editing too. And the new intro style of YOU singing the song is delicious. 🎹

I think the same could be said with Johnny Cash singing the song Hurt, originally done by Nine Inch Nails. Even though technically it is a cover of the original song, Mr. Cash just absolutely made the song his own. With Disturbed doing this cover version of Sound of Silence, it has become an entirely different song than what Simon & Garfunkel sang almost 60 years ago.

When he did this in the studio, he'd thought he was done for the day and then heard the piano intro his band mate had come up with. Three hours later they had the vocals for this. Fun fact about this recording. David had just come out of the studio recording all the songs for their new album and was exhausted. He took a hit of marijuana to relax and his producer came to him with this strange and asked if he wanted to sing along to it. David just took the arrangement, said I’m stoned off my ass and walked in the recording booth, 2 hours later, came out with the full recording. No one had sang with the arrangement until David recorded it. One shot while high and we have greatness.

I love how excited you get and rewinding, because you love and enjoy his singing. I feel the same. I like your energy💜.
I prefer this to the live performance on Conan. I can watch him all day long.

There is always something to learn by listening to diverse styles of music. Even if the style is not your cup of tea, you can likely pull certain nuances out of the music that will benefit your growth as a musician.

One of the things I love about the reactions, is that all the Disturbed fans know what David is capable of, and most were in awe of this magnificent performance. This makes the rounds on reaction channels and it's often peoples first introduction to Disturbed, so they do a reaction to a different song to get context and that Reaction is priceless!

I have heard that Simon and Garfunkel's version, was a warning. Disturbed's version was a cry of war and the resulting destruction, and PTX's version is a song of despair and a search for our humanity. But of the three this is the most moving and my fave

He does have some classical training as well as training to be a cantor. He has a vocal coach Melissa Cross whom he gets the distortion training. I personally like the live version.

You are do such a great job reacting to these music compositions. I use the “s” because I enjoyed your reaction to the live version on Conan and this official video. You bring such richness to my appreciation and enjoyment of music! With your clever use of emoji’s, your own facial expression, your astonishing vocal abilities, and various video filters you articulately express your kaleidoscope of feelings about each phrases of the piece. You’re intelligent reactions add to my valuing AND learning of the possibilities in musical communication. I just love you!

Weird aside to this - I learned to use my voice that way when one on my vocal chords died. I had one healthy vocal chord, and couldn't speak normally - in order to get enough volume to speak at all, I had to alter my breath higher up in my throat, and it added a heavy grit to my speaking voice. Too much talking left me with a sore throat, but it's off the chords themselves, so no risk of doing damage. There are many "angry metal" singers who achieve similar effect with their actual vocal folds, but it does do damage, and their careers are usually short lived, where David has been doing this since Disturbed started out - undoubtedly he winds up with a sore throat sometimes, but it doesn't damage his money maker at all, since he creates the effect away from the chords, it gets layered on top of the clean sound they create.

Hi Maggie 👋🏻It’s Michel one of the Sound Engineers that worked with you on few operas for Pacific Opera here in Victoria, British Columbia.Canada & a Dan of your & subscriber for few years. What really gets me is once people start saying a band or signer is using AutoTune in a song when they have no clue to what they are talking about. Real Auto Tune was a gadget used for sound effect in the early 2000 or to correct bad pitch on some less talented pop star. What people hear sometimes is a reverb or delay on the voice or an instrument to enhance it or provide an echo effect or like a reverb is to take away the dryness of a voice live through a microphone 🎤. Auto Tune is only used rearely in some studio all other effects are delay types or harmonizes & phasers type as well as a chorus effect to a voice to provide a thicker, richer tone but not here it all him except for the reverb of the room or an effect on his voice & the whole band & orchestra.

In an interview, David said he got expelled. He was in the weight room. There was a senior that didn't like a sophomore lifting more than he was, so the fool threw a 25 pound plate at him. Davin responded by picking him up and tossing him out a window (2nd floor.) You went total fan girl and I love it!! ❤🤣😂👍👍💯💯❤

Maggie you SHOULD go see Disturbed in a live show atmosphere. You will definitely feel differently after you come out. I bet Dave and the band would definitely enjoy meeting you. Shit Dave might even convince you to do a song with him on-stage. They are genuinely nice people. I've personally seen Dave stop the music to check on mosh pit people. He also believes in the rule of picking up someone when they fall. I fell once in a pit after catching a crazy elbow to my head and I was back on my feet before I could react. I miss live shows so much I hope they get rolling big time again soon.
