@@trashboy1420 or Steven little innocent mind just self censored itself like "nothing to see her, aunt Pearl just put the baby centi to sleep... oh snap!" xD
The fact that pearls ballerina fighting style and design always made me wondered if that’s where her hatred of eating comes from. Pearl has mentioned that she found eating a gross concept; and ballerinas do have a negative stereotype of becoming bulimic or anorexic. Also mental health wise ballerinas are known to have their own low self confidence, just like pearl. Makes you wonder.
Here's a Pearl fact you missed: Pearl has A GUN in her Gem. If you pause at around 11:34, you can see what looks like the butt of a rifle. Pearl is packing heat and we never even knew.
You seem to have forgotten that Our Pearl is referred to as defective by some homeworld gems. Notice that her gemstone forms an oval rather than a perfect circle. She's also called a praticular fancy pearl by Peridot. She's unquily herself.
The shape of her gem sometimes being oval instead of circular isn't because she's defective, it's because of animation and how things can't stay on model at times
I think defective was meant to mean that she was a pearl who "defected" from homeworld and abandoned her master. So it's defect (to forsake for one's own cause) rather than defect (an impurity) since I doubt the diamonds would give pink diamond an imperfect pearl
"Although she can't do so to the same level of Peridot" Me: (remembering when she was able to build a semi-functional spaceship in under a day with literal garbage, while Peridot, who was desperate to leave Earth was surrounded by gem technology and couldn't repair an old spaceship) *YOU LIEEEE! YOU LIEEEEE! THE FILTHY EARTH BOY LIEEEEES!*
I choked on my salad at that last part. Dif not expect the Invader Zim reference. Also, you are 100% correct, Pearl is a mastermind in engineering and I don't think she failed at that during her fight with Peridot. I think she sucked at fighting using a robot instead of her body, and that's where she failed. Her bot was a masterpiece.
Technically, we saw Pearl’s hologram ability when she reformed in the movie, but I presume you mean when Pearl is, well herself. I’m sure we’ll see it again =) hopefully in the next season
I'd also like to point out that at 6:55. Pearl learning that its healthy to accept others individuality is also shown in her fusion with Steven as Rainbow Quartz 2.0. They use He/him pronouns. Why? Cause Pearl has finally accepted Steven as his own individual person and not as Pink. She accepts him, for who HE is.
I thought that was a good way to show how far she'd come, since I've always felt like she began seeing Steven more as his own person rather than a continuation of Pink after Steven comforted Pearl at the end of Rose's Scabbard. Like in Historical Friction, she went full mom mode when Steven was in the play. It just felt like she was showing more and more affection for Steven himself as the series went on. Like you said, Rainbow Quartz 2.0 was a great way to show that she had shed all association of Pink with her relationship with Steven.
Pearls my favorite character because I loved watching her struggle to become independent, to move on from the past, and be her own gem. Her arc was so well written and wonderfully unique. When we hear stories about slaves, you hear about how they set themselves free out of a desire to be independent and independent they become. I’ve never heard of a story where someone was raised to be solely dependent on someone else; suddenly live, learn, and really struggle to be independent from that person. In conclusion: pearl is a badass.
I think that there is some symbolism tied to Pearl’s ribbon in her second-to-last form. It was around her waist, although that doesn’t matter. The ribbon was meant to symbolize the secret of Rose being Pink Diamond and was gotten rid of after “A Single Pale Rose”, meaning that she doesn’t have to keep the secret anymore. Her newest form does not have the ribbon for this reason. I just wanted to input that bit of information! I love these videos!
It’s also often thought of as a visual metaphor for binding her to service. Peridot fiddles with it when she talk about how fancy she is and how pearls are a commonality on Homeworld serving the aristocracy. She also progressively looses the tightness of the ribbon with time, eventually loosing it altogether when she’s come fully her own Gem. It’s a sash with long tails in her second series form as opposed to a tight and narrow band from before.
Toon Ruins made a really eye-opening video talking about autism representation in the media, and cited Pearl as a really good example of a realistic representation of someone on the autism spectrum. I’d really recommend checking this video out
Also I love how Pearl developed her own style becoming less "fem" with each reform when she learned she doesn't have to conform to homeworlds standards
Personally, I feel like Pearl risked her destruction for Rose during the war because if Rose was poofed Homeworld would see it's not a Rose Quartz and it's actually Pink Diamond. If this did happen it would probably be really bad for the Crystal Gems and especially bad for Pink.
I can't see anyone here pointing out one of the most relevant RL factors about Pearl's gem: It's the only one so far that is *not* the product of geological processes. Pearls are formed in oysters as a defense against foreign objects (generally, mineral objects.) Pearl is the "gem" that is formed to defend a biological environment (the interior of an oyster, or, say, Earth) from a mineral threat (a grain of sand, or Gem colonization.) A pearl is not a "real" gemstone, for this reason, just as a Pearl isn't a Real Gem in the Homeworld caste system. Because of this distinction, and the intrinsic complexity of biological systems, there's likely textbooks to be written about the symbolic significance of Pearl's gem. Personal opinion: there's also far more to be written about Pearl as a character than any other single character in the show.
Pearl sacrificing herself on the battlefield also makes sense in the fact that if Homeworld gems poofed Rose and took her gem, they'd possibly find out the truth about who she was.
*Round and round* *Let the city turn* *Party in the hills, we can party in the burbs* *Roof on fire, let it burn* *Champagne in my hand, i'm not concerned*
Pearl is my mom. I cannot teach her to live for herself, to do things for herself, to have her own opinions and tastes without having to ask me what I like. This is not healthy... She also used to be complete badass.
@@beeperscreepers4263 people who didn't experience love/ attention from their parents (like.... AT ALL) have a huge need for affection from others and equally huge need to love someone or care about something to fill that hole in their heart. That makes it very hard to learn how to love and care for yourself. The thirst for affection from an outside source is waaay too overwhelming.
I really relate to Pearl in so many ways and it makes me so glad that this show exists. it really helped me during my tough times, and I really feel like once i saw Pearl growing, I was inspired to do the same. I love this show so much!
You know, around 6:00 you reminded me with a clip of time where Rose and Pearl almost fused for the first time... a theory of mine. Remember that scene? I do wonder, how much obsession of Pearl's about Rose comes from that one little moment. She was way more subservient back then, and I believe she took Rose's casual(in a way) words: to never stop feeling about her like she did back there, as an informal order wich her Pearl mind stuffed somewhere deep.
Saved this to watch later, hope to see some interpretations of OCD with Pearl. I have rOCD myself and have always seen glimpses of it in Pearl, not just her general obsessive-ness over things, of course, but her obsessiveness over Rose (rOCD aka Rose OCD ;P )
I think what’s also interesting is that pearls don’t come out of the ground, they’re made by clams, where this has been pointed out in Steven Universe Future, when she regenerates, she is shown reforming in a clam shape. As well as the Pearl Centre which has many clam based themes in the building I think this is symbolism of how pearls take no effort to be created, but are still very rare and are only seen as property.
The fact that pearls that occur in nature are substantially more valuable than manufactured pearls actually rings true for Pearl. She is the one pearl that we see in SU who learns how to be her own gem with her own nature, rather than the subservient and made to order pearls of Homeworld. As Steven put it, "Pearl isn't common at all."
The real life pearl is expensive and rare and symbolises purity and wealth right? Well for Steven universe I think that correlated because pearls are seen as an accessory to the high status gems , much like a pearl necklace irl idk thought that was a cool point they missed
6:15 what's weird about Rose and Pearl is that it's like the co-dependent relationship was kind of one sided. Pearl needed Rose, but Rose seemed pretty neutral about it. Sure, she loved Pearl, but it seemed much more normal with Rose.
7:42 "Her eyes are overlapped with what looks like binary code" Actually all Gems who interface with Gem Tech have their eyes overlapped with binary code. In the episode, Jailbreak. You can see Peridot's eyes momentarily have the same effect before she grabs the Gem Destabilizer.
On the Gem Homeworld, being assigned a Pearl was an honor, so in that sense, they were valued. I don't think they were common, maybe a few hundred in existence.
I think a reason why pearls are looked down upon may be to do with how they are formed as homeworld gems have been shown to have a distaste for organic life forms and pearls are gemstones that are created through organic processes
Did anyone else notice pearl's gem during her reset form from the movie? The movie raises a lot of questions about how pearls are made. If they become a clam shell straight out of their gem and talk, then I can only assume they don't "pop" out of holes like that. Plus, pearls in real life are easy to cultivate and just need around 5-20 years to form, and that's nothing in gem years. Another thing I noticed from the reset pearl form is that pearl's gem is pink. I still believe she was going to be a gift for White Diamond, but after whatever happened to Pink Pearl, the other diamonds changed our pearl before she was fully formed and gave her to Pink Diamond. Notice how she doesn't have any white on her, besides her gem placement she had nothing to do with White Diamond.
personally, i think pearls are one of the strongest gems that exist, they have so many abilites, which is why pearls are hard coded to obey their owner to be as usefull as possible without being a threat, i guess the diamonds never considered that if the owner were to rebel, they would be used against them
About Pearl colors, white pearls must be kept in a white box or they will absorb the color of whatever they're left on. I think that's why Yellow Diamond's pearl is yellow, Blue diamond's pearl is blue, and "volleyball" is pink. Also, notice how the placement of yellow and blue diamond's gem is the same as their pearls. Obviously, Crystal Gem Pearl doesn't follow this rule. She has a forehead gem while "volleyball" has a belly button gem. Pearls may seem disposable, that's why I initially thought maybe Pink Diamond just abandoned Volleyball and replaced her with crystal gem pearl. But after a rewatch and some observations I think crystal gem pearl was originally white diamond's. She never addresses it, but homeworld can wipe gem memories. This would explain her gem placement, lack of single assigned color present in every other non-fusion gem, and the existence of both volleyball and pearl claiming to be Pink's while white has no pearl. Several gems mention how pearl is defective and white diamond tolerates nothing but perfection. Pearls tend to also copy their owner's outfit style. Pearl's hair doesn't look much like pink diamond's. Of course the reset would reset her clothes, but gem hair tends to stay pretty much the same through reformations. Even amethyst has a "normal" amount of hair for a quartz despite being "defective" otherwise. This might be something dumb everyone noticed but I feel the need to point it out because it feels under-acknowledged and its a pretty interesting concept!
I feel like this is a physical representation of her letting go of Homeworld’s expectations for her (such as being elegant, neat, and submissive), and really becoming her own gem.
So here is a thought I had as I watch videos like this on pearls in the caste system of home world. Pearls, from what I can see, are the human equivalent of our smart phones. Perhaps way (way way) more advanced as they also can be seen to have thoughts and dreams of their own, but they do seem to suit this aspect. We expect technology to cater to our whims, we expect it to ease our lives, even opening doors, to identify things around us, and to amuse us when we are bored, feeling bad, or simply want something amusing. I think it has even been said that pearls are the embodiment of technology on home world by the creators of the series. Essentially, our Pearl, is an AI program come to life. Maybe that is the better way to put it. Pearls are essentially AI’s. They are not expected to function outside of that function even when it can be seen how individualistic they can be. This is probably even attributed to them having different owners and changing to meet those needs. I find it fascinating to contemplate the role of pearls and from there what our Pearl’s context was in all of this. I think it makes her even more amazing. Thanks for the video. I’m glad to watch it. It was rather insightful and helped me gather my thoughts on this.
I always took the line "made to order servant" as in they are created specifically for a gem, that they are customized by their respective gem owner. As we saw in shell that Pearl's are basically dolls to be paraded around for status, the fancier the pearl the higher status the gem
I really appreciate this video because I absolutely love Pearl! I actually liked her right away when I started watching the show. My boyfriend (who was the one who showed me Steven Universe) was confused because he said no one really liked her at first BUT I THOUGHT SHE WAS SO CUTE RIGHT FROM THE FIRST EPISODE! I also love her because I kind of see myself in her, being an insecure perfectionist as well. And her voice actor does a phenomenal job (though all of the voice actors in SU are great). Pearl is literally my favorite fictional character :)
If all other pearls and gem machines recognize Steven as Pink Diamond, and Steven has Roses gem, then if Steven told Pearl "Take 2 steps forward" wouldn't she be forced to do it still? Even in Era 3, all the pearls would still be forced to listen to the diamonds still right?
Also for the june birthstone is Alexandrite but its so hard to get naturally that Pearl became the more widely known one. Learned that from my mom who has a June birthday
Wasn’t our pearl supposed to belong to white diamond because if you really think about it white diamond is very organized and likes things to be perfect and you have our pearl embodying all the traits of white in a way especially since pearls gem is on her forehead and white diamonds gem is on her forehead as well
if Pearl were to fall into the description of any zodiac sign, it would be Virgo: it's the sign with the servant archetype. they're practical, analytical, "pure", precise, perfectionistic, detail-oriented; and although they're often perceived as dull, boring or petty by those who don't know them well; they can show a more dynamic side of them with a very strong character when around those they love and feel comfortable with.
what would be cool is an explanation about fusion itself. The treatment of fusion itself seems strange--it's a weapon, a symbol of a relationship...somewhat sexual? (considering Pearl's reaction to Sugilite).
The size and stature thing also plays in with our pearl because paradot sees her and comments on how she's a fancy pearl and must have belonged to someone extremely important
Pearl and the flower rose are both associated with the month of June. I found this interesting as they both assume Gemini and Cancer like qualities in the show.

*[DO YOU WISH TO ENGAGE IN COMBAT]*
Pearl's jealous because greg took rose as his girlfriend/wife, while pearl wanted to make love with rose
Is she gay and lesbian? Yes
I used to hate Pearl but as her character developed and the plot thickened, I truly began to love her
I find it funny how in the first episode she snaps a corrupted gem's neck.
NerdWire: pearl was the most loyal to rose
Spinel: hold my beer
Pearl can also manipulate clouds. As seen in "its over isn't it" as well as her training assessment of Connie's sword fighting.
“So how gay do you want the pearl?”
Rebecca: Y E S
Pearl when she was serving pink her hair was pink and not so straight but now her hair is like a irl pearl color
Notice how she doesn't have any white on her, besides her gem placement she had nothing to do with White Diamond.
personally, i think pearls are one of the strongest gems that exist, they have so many abilites, which is why pearls are hard coded to obey their owner to be as usefull as possible without being a threat, i guess the diamonds never considered that if the owner were to rebel, they would be used against them
8:20 actually I believe that is a low level of hydrokinesis considering how Steven splashed water on the sand earlier and how she manipulated clouds.
Finally my favorite Crystal Gem!!
Don't really believe in astrology but I do think that was intentional. That'd be neat
Pearl is just a robot that becane self aware
Honestly the gem universe is really horrifying.. i want more
About Pearl colors, white pearls must be kept in a white box or they will absorb the color of whatever they're left on.
She went from being super feminine to being more masculine in her newest forms
Pearl is my favorite character
0:49 She? Mary Poppins? Thought Rainbow Quartz 2.0 was already doing that.
I like how pearl has feminine and masculine qualities that complement each other
8:55 *shows clip of rainbow quartz 2.0 but doesn’t talk about him and moves on*
"Pearl is the Mary Poppins of the crystal gems"
*looks at Rainbow 2.0*
I really appreciate this video because I absolutely love Pearl! I actually liked her right away when I started watching the show. My boyfriend (who was the one who showed me Steven Universe) was confused because he said no one really liked her at first BUT I THOUGHT SHE WAS SO CUTE RIGHT FROM THE FIRST EPISODE! I also love her because I kind of see myself in her, being an insecure perfectionist as well. And her voice actor does a phenomenal job (though all of the voice actors in SU are great).
Pearl is literally my favorite fictional character :)
Pearls are also worn as a symbol of status- an accessory to flaunt your rank.
You forgot that Pearl can alose shape and move clouds, as shown in Mr. Greg
Long live the mother Hen.
Bird mom is best mom
If all other pearls and gem machines recognize Steven as Pink Diamond, and Steven has Roses gem, then if Steven told Pearl "Take 2 steps forward" wouldn't she be forced to do it still? Even in Era 3, all the pearls would still be forced to listen to the diamonds still right?
She was less like a maid and more like a slave.
Also for the june birthstone is Alexandrite but its so hard to get naturally that Pearl became the more widely known one. Learned that from my mom who has a June birthday
"you could say that pearl is like the Mary Poppins of the crystal gems"
yes and the Steven and Pearl fusion is Mary Poppins on crack
Someone seriously needs to talk about the 90s Gargoyles,X-Men The animated series, Captain planet or even Freakazoid.
Pearl's easily my favorite! 🏳️🌈
Pearl is just pearl, in her own pearly way
Wasn’t our pearl supposed to belong to white diamond because if you really think about it white diamond is very organized and likes things to be perfect and you have our pearl embodying all the traits of white in a way especially since pearls gem is on her forehead and white diamonds gem is on her forehead as well
Fav Pearl trivia: Is gay and best
Pearls are the birthstone for June. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
It makes sense in the song "Isn´t it over" she cannot move on because pink diamond ordered her to
She also shaped some clouds in Mr.Greg
if Pearl were to fall into the description of any zodiac sign, it would be Virgo:
it's the sign with the servant archetype. they're practical, analytical, "pure", precise, perfectionistic, detail-oriented; and although they're often perceived as dull, boring or petty by those who don't know them well; they can show a more dynamic side of them with a very strong character when around those they love and feel comfortable with.
I’m a Virgo and I’m neither of those you described
You didn’t mention her energy projection!!
Oooh good one!
what would be cool is an explanation about fusion itself. The treatment of fusion itself seems strange--it's a weapon, a symbol of a relationship...somewhat sexual? (considering Pearl's reaction to Sugilite).
Can’t pearl manipulate clouds as well
Yep
I was born in August and the birth stones for August are Sardonyx,Spinel and Peridot
_everyones_ eyes go weird when they touch the tech water stuff
peridots eyes were the same
Pearl and Greg finally talking feels so good tor my heart
PEARL IS BEST GEM!!
The size and stature thing also plays in with our pearl because paradot sees her and comments on how she's a fancy pearl and must have belonged to someone extremely important
I have a very serious kitten named pearl
Pearl and the flower rose are both associated with the month of June. I found this interesting as they both assume Gemini and Cancer like qualities in the show.
Remember that pearl had to take every hit for rose because otherwise everyone know rose was actually pink
I wonder what would happen if Steven brought a gem with him from pearl's mind.
