It’s more than that, actually. Small updates take about 2 years to finalize, and big model updates 4. This was probably in between, considering the numerous physical changes between models. The project likely started before 2020.
Would you sell an a7siii and buy this one??? My vlogs need an upgrade. Currently using my iPhone 13Pro but have the a7siii in the box. The 12MP for photos kinda annoys me. This one though… 8k 24p and also 4k downsampled from 6K??? 🤯🤯🤯
@geraldundone what do you mean by "base ISO" with slog 3? Mine goes lower than 800. Also, resolve doesn't seem to have a clue that my footage is slog3 in color managed work flow. It doesn't transform it like my braw clips. I presume that's normal?
I feel you feature pain Gerald. Why does this photo-centric camera get the new FX3/FX30 menu, but us A7siii users still get stuck with the old style menu. The A7siii and FX3 are the same freaking camera!!! Or why does the a7IV get focus breathing comp, but still not the A7siii? Come on Sony, you deserve all the criticism of your menus and features. At this point, the lack of support is just silly.
So this camera has a dedicated video menu and display layout like FX3, but not the A7s III which was released as a dedicated video cam... Thanks, Sony!
Thank for the review. Excellent as always. Here are a few wishes to upgrade it further: 1. In camera HDR bracket image merging up to 20 stops of dynamic range. 2. External recording up to 8K 30 and 4K 120. 3. Open gate 3:2 video recording down-sampled 4k and 8k with full sensor readout (only Panasonic cameras offer this at the moment) 4. I know it is far fetched but a variable electronic ND adapted from Sony E to Canon EF mount 5. Built In looks and film emulations
Really impressed with the overheat times on this, and nice to see Sony rolling forward all of the a7S III, a1, a7 IV, etc. features, along with new ones (4-axis screen, AF improvements).
hi Gerald, one question, we know Sony A7iv have dual iso base 800 and 3200 in video, but in photo mode is the same? For example in standard picture profile vs PP2 picture profile (stlls) is better to use PP2 than standard picture profile?, we have reduction of noise in picture profile PP2 using dual iso 800-3200? Or there is not difference with standard profile? I hope you understand my question. Sorry my English.

The a7R camera we all have been waiting for is here. A7RIV was the R camera no one asked for and was disappointing. But the a7RV is just darn amazing!!! Thanks for the review Gerald Undone!
@@takoflame4948 yup, i don't mind 1.2x crop. I'm not going to use the a7RV for videos and when i do use it for videos, it would be my B-cam to my FX3. I mainly use my a7Riii as my photography camera mainly shooting portraits and landscapes. It will be the same with the a7RV mainly using it for photography and video as secondary. So that 1.2x crop will not bother me at all.
@@artphototech don't listen to him, the RIV was an amazing and camera, and still is. It's my go-to for astro and landscape photography. Yes it can be noisy, but only for pixel peeps. Looks completely fine when not at a 200% zoom
Yeah I have the a7r3 and the a7r4... The r4 is a much better camera. All the small things and not so small..things like af ergonomics and resolution make the r4 so much better than the r3
As someone who primarily shoots vehicles I'm really hoping we get the vehicle detection autofocus features in firmware updates on the A7SIII. I've found touch tracking autofocus to be very unreliable on vehicles to the point that I stopped trying to use it after it screwed up too many shots for me.
Solid Review, the Ending though ... caught me off guard, but, I learned to appreciate it, it'll age like a fine wine... lol awesome review Gerald, agree with the ending, looks like Sony is giving new features to every camera they release and carrying over everything from previous models without updating them with said new features, it's starting to be annoying...
one thing i would like to see Gerald do is a video on the Sony Picture profile settings and tell us about them. Especially the SLOG 3 one the PP8 i would love to know more detail about all them settings with in PP8 and all..
R is supposed be photography centric, I'd love to see a build-in ND Filter. Kudos to the LCD screen catering for photographers and videographers. Yet most of the review is about videography specs. Isn't this just a turbo charged A7Siii? You make a good point in the value. It isn't good enough to beat the A9 and it is does not outperform cheaper Sony models
You are the best reviewer on YT. The only problem I have is I don't understand half of what you are saying because I'm just an old-fashioned street and nature photographer and really don't care about making videos. To be honest I have not seen anybody doing videos with cameras in real life only TH-camrs do it. NatGeo videos and videography are a different story.
One thing I’d like to see talked about and improved with mirrorless cameras is startup times. I shot weddings on DSLRs for years, and the great thing with those is if you saw a moment happening, you could switch the camera on and by the time it got to your eye it was taking photos. Doing the same with my Sonys is a frustrating ordeal, often causing me to miss moments. How quick do the newer models startup from off or asleep?
I don't know why more people don't mention this. My A7R IV is painfully slow to start up, nothing like my previous Fuji X-T4. Sure, you can leave in sleeping, but I don't like that since it's easy to bump a button.
Ah well arent we all so insanely grateful that such a innovative company like Panasonic exist which over and over set the trends for the video industry? I mean look at all the acomplishemnts they achieved in their GH productline, starting at GH1 and so on, which then years later found their ways into cameras of the other companies ;)
@@sknemani well good thing they were the first company who really put Video functionality in a DSLR shaped body. Otherwise maybe the affordable Fullframe look would never had hit the market like on recent years. BTW the panasonic S Line has on of the best fullframe picture quality in relation to price.
@@Joshua_S I really like Panasonic as well. It’s only the lens choice with auto focus that I prefer canon/Sony over them. I agree with you totally though. Panasonic and to a great extent Blackmagic pocket 4k as well are what I believe pushed dslr/mirrorless video to what it is today
Pretty good. But that rolling shutter is pretty bad. I will stick with my A7siii until sony makes a camera with 4k120 and 8k with less rolling shutter. Plus no binning in 4k 30 or 60.
Can you please make a video explaining ISO on dual gain sensors and how log profiles work on the sensor? Specifically why on S Log 3 shadows are noisy at ISO 800 but not noisy at ISO 2500?
I have been waiting a very long time for a dog anus AF tracker. Thank you Sony! That said... this camera DOES look absolutely wonderful - I was going to write it off when the rumors about the flip screen came out. Love a flip screen for video but loath them for photo (which is what I'd want this camera for - though I shoot on an rIV already). But that new design looks PERFECT. Really want to play with one of these.
I could not go above 500 iso on my a7riv without the raw images having so much noise and falling apart in post. It made me resent it so much because I was used to sony being low light cameras coming from the a7rii. Downgraded to the a7iv
@@nzcastillo maybe I received a lemon? It was such a down grade from my a7rii if the lighting conditions were not perfect. It’s also easier to hide noise/grain shooting Astro because it’ll just look like the stars lol compared to portraits
Best camera review I’ve seen. I always end up switching off or zoning out with other reviewers. This vid had a bunch of info pack in but it wasn’t all boring specs. 👍👍
7:30 thermal specifications will be for the highest permissible ambient temperature, which will be somewhere in the datasheet. Typically 35-40 °C for digital gizmos.
Completely agree with the closing point. Insane the flagship continues to lag behind firmware wise with each new lower end release. These things take time, but currently no commitment that the A1 will ever get all the game changing software updates from this year making us feel like we would have to instead only get in a A2 next year which is incredibly frustrating since the device is still so powerful.
I was just about to move from a7iii to iv when this comes along. It has some features that really appeal. But do I need or can I even handle that 60 megapixel sensor? I take photos for my own personal enjoyment and never use video. I have plenty of prime lenses ( 20,28,35, 55, 85 and a 70 to 200 f4 G zoom. Should I save a bit more for this? Or am I doing overkill?
Need a comparison of the A7 R5 vs A7 Siii focusing on video. Although the R line is focused on still photography the R5 is priced the same as the older Siii so if the video is equal or better than the Siii it will undoubtedly be a better choice for everyone.
Yes again a video camera review, a stills review I will wait for. Just to say the super articulating screen is a long awaited and a salute to the mechanical engineers. The best thing is for doing panos in portrait view and able to see without twisting your head a full screen of the image vs a narrow in the middle of a normal screen. Like the A7SM3 I used to capture the Moon and Mars flyby was at High Midnight with camera pointed up very high to where a regular camera you would be on your back to see and track doing stills with a close up with the FE 200-600mm + 2X teleconverter in APS-C to get a full frame moon at 1800mm. Compared to a lunar eclipse in '17 with my A7RM2 with a high midnight capture seated on the ground almost under my tripod. A screen that will need a lot of care when in the field not to overdo manipulation and be aware of sticking points and care with cleaning, I mean like salt air or even inclement weather.
Hi and thanks for the reel. How do you find the rear control wheel around the OK button. Mine feels a little none responsive and mushy. Is this how it is before sending it back?
I have a question that I can’t find any info about anywhere? Both a1 and this camera the a7rV, are specified to give 16-bit raw output via hdmi in 4k. A1 is 50mp and this camera is 61mp or something. How are they giving raw with 1:1 readout. Am I missing something here? And if it is not 1:1 readout but has some binning etc. then how is that raw? I am scratching my head here.
Is everything Gerald said about the 24p video mode valid for the 25p video mode (for european PAL)? I'm just curious cause the official sony website says "24p (25p)"
I just wanted to point out something about the rolling shutter. You say it's closer to the A7 IV, but might be a little faster. In testing, however, the A7RV's rolling shutter in 8k is ~38ms and the APS-C crop mode is ~31ms. Those are a far cry from the A7IV's 27ms full sensor readout and 13ms APS-C crop readout.
i was surprised when he said the A7RV might be a little faster. how's the A7RV's rolling shutter in the binned FF 4k 24/30 mode? can't find this info anywhere.. would it be better than the A7IV's rolling shutter?

It’s more than that, actually. Small updates take about 2 years to finalize, and big model updates 4. This was probably in between, considering the numerous physical changes between models. The project likely started before 2020.
Would you sell an a7siii and buy this one??? My vlogs need an upgrade. Currently using my iPhone 13Pro but have the a7siii in the box. The 12MP for photos kinda annoys me.
This one though… 8k 24p and also 4k downsampled from 6K???
🤯🤯🤯
The ending is hilarious 😂
Man, you are very good at what you do, and you have a great sense of humor. It's always interesting to watch your reviews.
Love the new “Doggy Bum AF” feature!
Also I totally agree…how does the A1 / A7Siii lack some of those dang features 😢
Cause its an older camera. but i love the lens comp on my a7iv. highly recomend
Great review. How hot does it get compared to the A1 at 8K?
Gerald 👍👍👍Fantastic camera!!!
I was just about to order the A7s III today but saw this release. I do indoor studio videos, which would you suggest?
a7Rv is still going to be limited to slow sensor readout speed. High mp, slow readout -> rolling shutter. Safe money would be on a7Siii.
So this camera has a dedicated video menu and display layout like FX3, but not the A7s III which was released as a dedicated video cam... Thanks, Sony!
Thank for the review. Excellent as always. Here are a few wishes to upgrade it further:
1. In camera HDR bracket image merging up to 20 stops of dynamic range.
2. External recording up to 8K 30 and 4K 120.
3. Open gate 3:2 video recording down-sampled 4k and 8k with full sensor readout (only Panasonic cameras offer this at the moment)
4. I know it is far fetched but a variable electronic ND adapted from Sony E to Canon EF mount
5. Built In looks and film emulations
Sounds like you want a Fuji X-H2S lol..
No Panasonic camera offers 8k open gate... This is meant to be a stills focused camera that can also shoot video.
Really impressed with the overheat times on this, and nice to see Sony rolling forward all of the a7S III, a1, a7 IV, etc. features, along with new ones (4-axis screen, AF improvements).
I just knew the embargo was up when I saw that thumbnail. Just beautiful 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Amazing review as always dude. Thank you :)
Amazing camera but no disappointment in having literally only just bought an A1.
Hopefully the a9iii will have a ~30MP sensor with 6K60p internal (RAW) recording and oversampled 4K60/120p with full sensor readout.
hi Gerald, one question, we know Sony A7iv have dual iso base 800 and 3200 in video, but in photo mode is the same? For example in standard picture profile vs PP2 picture profile (stlls) is better to use PP2 than standard picture profile?, we have reduction of noise in picture profile PP2 using dual iso 800-3200? Or there is not difference with standard profile? I hope you understand my question. Sorry my English.
17:09 🤣🤣
This video is educational yet hilarious, I love your little rants and jokes here and there. I'm sorry to say this, but if Marvel one day reauditioned the cast for Star-Lord, you should try it. Thank you for great video as always
gerald… one of your best reviews!!! loved it!!!!
(Eye) ball tracking is spot on!
I love getting your opinion on any camera, your reviews seem really honest and very detailed which I really appreciate! thank you for your content 🙂
The a7R camera we all have been waiting for is here. A7RIV was the R camera no one asked for and was disappointing. But the a7RV is just darn amazing!!! Thanks for the review Gerald Undone!
U really like that 1.2 crop?
Have you used the riv? If so, what was the most disappointing thing? If not, are you disappointed because of what other people say?
I'm curious, why would the A 7 r IV outperform the V in terms of dynamic range, as you mention in the video at 10:35?
As someone who primarily shoots vehicles I'm really hoping we get the vehicle detection autofocus features in firmware updates on the A7SIII. I've found touch tracking autofocus to be very unreliable on vehicles to the point that I stopped trying to use it after it screwed up too many shots for me.
it has it
@@John-e4p1x no, it doesn't.
Thanks for the comprehensive review. This will really help getting to know the A7RV when I purchase one.
I hate that the A1 does not have some of the same issues as some of the newer cameras. Lens compensation being one of the main issues.
well now u can sell and buy a7rv
Lens compensation is an issue?
As soon as I saw the release, I knew id have to watch your review to get the full breakdown. As always, you didn’t disappoint.
Ahhhhh why can’t we get all these features as an aftermarket update for the A1!
My A7IV didn't want me to watch this video. Awesome in-depth review!
It is useable for Sky, Star or Nightpictures?? The Iso is not that good as A7IV right??
Great review! Too bad about the lack of 4K 120p with that great animal eye detection.
It’s not a video first camera, so no surprises there, that they didn’t include it.
@@moritzzoellner purposely crippled I think - can't have it compete with the FX30
one thing i would like to see Gerald do is a video on the Sony Picture profile settings and tell us about them.
Especially the SLOG 3 one the PP8 i would love to know more detail about all them settings with in PP8 and all..
I have several videos on this topic. Do a search on TH-cam for "Sony picture profiles undone" 😀
@@geraldundone Right but i meant a detailed video on the settings in the picture profiles and what they mean and for and all that..
The perfect articulating screen DOES exist...
I thought the Z9 was the best we could get but this looks awesome.
That's a good point - I had heard the A74 is slow to start up.
I don't know why more people don't mention this. My A7R IV is painfully slow to start up, nothing like my previous Fuji X-T4.
Sure, you can leave in sleeping, but I don't like that since it's easy to bump a button.
@@ViktorKitov I bought the A7R5 two weeks ago - pretty much instant start up
@@markshirley01 Thanks a lot, I appreciate the quick reply!
@@markshirley01 Awesome, thank you!
Ah yes, the review we needed.
Cool! Finally can start looking at affordable A7r3 and A7r4.
Us a7siii users are the middle child of Sony :(
Awesome review! Just wondering if this camera has gryo data so I can stabilize the video with Sony Catalyst?
Ah well arent we all so insanely grateful that such a innovative company like Panasonic exist which over and over set the trends for the video industry? I mean look at all the acomplishemnts they achieved in their GH productline, starting at GH1 and so on, which then years later found their ways into cameras of the other companies ;)
They are great no doubt. But most people love the look of a full frame anyway.
Oh my, I really love how he reviewed each of the camera.
After this review, I think I am gonna take a break before going into A7RV
Pretty good. But that rolling shutter is pretty bad. I will stick with my A7siii until sony makes a camera with 4k120 and 8k with less rolling shutter. Plus no binning in 4k 30 or 60.
Can you please make a video explaining ISO on dual gain sensors and how log profiles work on the sensor? Specifically why on S Log 3 shadows are noisy at ISO 800 but not noisy at ISO 2500?
"The camera also thought the dogs eyeball was on his an*s." 🤣🤣🤣
Big brown eye AF 😂
I'm picking up my RV tomorrow. I wonder how long we'll be waiting for Adobe to offer an update for working with the RV raw files?
I have been waiting a very long time for a dog anus AF tracker. Thank you Sony!
That said... this camera DOES look absolutely wonderful - I was going to write it off when the rumors about the flip screen came out. Love a flip screen for video but loath them for photo (which is what I'd want this camera for - though I shoot on an rIV already). But that new design looks PERFECT. Really want to play with one of these.
Same here. Didn't want one in the next a1/a9 models because tilt is better for my needs. Having both, no complaints from me!
i want that one day im going to dc area to try to get a life for myself in photography lol so maybe i can get this someday
I could not go above 500 iso on my a7riv without the raw images having so much noise and falling apart in post. It made me resent it so much because I was used to sony being low light cameras coming from the a7rii. Downgraded to the a7iv
Whaaaat?? I would routinely shoot Astro with my a7RIV and get amazing images. I‘m able to great photos up to ISO3200!
@@nzcastillo maybe I received a lemon? It was such a down grade from my a7rii if the lighting conditions were not perfect. It’s also easier to hide noise/grain shooting Astro because it’ll just look like the stars lol compared to portraits
Laws of physics still rule. There's no gimmick to overcome the small pixels.
Best camera review I’ve seen. I always end up switching off or zoning out with other reviewers. This vid had a bunch of info pack in but it wasn’t all boring specs. 👍👍
The perfect camera is finally here, the only problem is no money.
If you are video-centric content creator the perfect camera is here from 2 years ago - fx3/a7sIII both released in 2020/beggining of 2021.
7:30 thermal specifications will be for the highest permissible ambient temperature, which will be somewhere in the datasheet. Typically 35-40 °C for digital gizmos.
Still 4k 60 crop lol
Is the screen touch control? Full
Touch control ? Tap to focus and tap to shoot etc?
Do you recommend to use Sony CFexpress Type A Memory Card or SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO 300MB/s UHS-II SDXC Card for Sony A7RV?
Great Review! Just curious if this camera has the same as the Sony a1 as in no banding issues when it comes to LED lighting. Thanks !
Need a comparison of the A7 R5 vs A7 Siii focusing on video. Although the R line is focused on still photography the R5 is priced the same as the older Siii so if the video is equal or better than the Siii it will undoubtedly be a better choice for everyone.
Are you 100% sure this camera is the same size at the A7R4? I'm looking to get a cage and need to know which is compatible. thx!
This ad spot was the most practical and enjoyable! Digging that format Gerald.
Could you do measurements on the screen? I’d like to try putting one of these screens on my a7iii
Hi G. Does it have the same, missing menu display, when using an external monitor, and shooting in 4k, like the a7 m3, r2 and more?
Anyone know how the 1080p 120 on it is? Is it really soft like the A7IV?
only saw a brief 1080p 120 sample in one review.. and it looked surprisingly decent.. no one else seems to even mention this
The most detailed and clearest review of the camera 👍
When do you think the A7 V will be out?
