It would be easy for any semi experienced player to beat the robot. Even if it was fast enough and calibrated to never miss, its field of range is too short. Easy to hit it where it can't reach. Its just a long advertisement
There's crazy editing because this is a kuka robot ad. You'd need very fast, very accurate vision systems to play ping pong with a robot. For the time it would take the robot to even receive an image, do the math for the correct position and swing, the ball is already going to be off the table. I program a Fanuc R1000ia-30ib with said vision systems. It's all but 'fast'.
I learned to program KUKA weld bots years ago - 2 on a rail and one overhead utilizing a synchronized fixture table (350 deg rotation) that all 3 bots were welding at 1" per second (Miller square wave CLE power souce). Assemblies were very complex and had multiple weld requirements for each unit. Even set up a weld cell using (2) Foronius CMT power units on a KUKA longitudinal seam system to weld 30' galvanized grain elevator legs - 1 on each side and would weld at 3" /second (10 minute production rate). Used a 2 axis robotic arm (each side) rather than a fixed drive to increase production rate by position feedback to the bot controller since the leg sides were inconsistant surface level - basically each leg was made from 2 formed sides with 3 bends from various thickness (12-20 ga sheet metal). Using fixed rail modules that the stinger is mounted to requires head adjustment for each thickness. The KUKA position feedback auto adjusts as well as torch head angle compensation based on volt/amp/speed variables. Sorry, that was long - my comment is I never had an opportunity to utilize vision systems due to they were in infancy when I set up cells 15-20 years ago. The systems today are incredibly fast as proven in the video!

Jesus Christ If they had *just* shown the match without the slo-mo and the rapid-fire editing I'd be interested. But it looks so Hollywood it seems fake. This is like watching NFL Films where the purpose is to overhype some guys rolling around in mud as if it meant something. You guys (Kuka) listened to your filmmaker instead of your brains. Just let the robot do its thing and record it. If its impressive we'll know.
I love how the robot is so fast at the beginning it hits the ball before it even floes off the table but then be hits the ball on the corner and the machine magically has slower reflexes. Also if he is a world class player he would have curved the ball so when the machine hit it, the ball would plunge straight into the net.
@Joe Bill Scott actual it's not animated in any way, but the programming was different for some scenes. KUKA Takes real actions for that. Take a Look at the Music Video "Automatica" Nigel Stanford Made KUKA Robots Play Instruments and it works, the Sound is not 100% real, because you have the Robot Sounds in it
@@JoeBillScott It's probably all practical effects, meaning all robot motions are programmed by a human and shot in sequences to create the illusion of an actual match. That, and Timo probably has more than enough skill to play off of these pre-programmed motions to make it look like the robot is responding and returning a shot that it could somehow detect well enough and quickly enough to expertly react to, with technology that existed in 2013.
One of my favorite videos ever. I know it's not real, but it's so cinematic and the music just gets me excited every time I watch it. Maybe I'm just a sucker for good production, but nonetheless, I still find this video to be amazing years later. Can't wait until technology advances enough that we can have a real showdown like this. But then again, maybe we don't want a world where robots are that comparable to humans?...
For years now, I been fantasizing about how good of a snooker player a robot could be. I bet it wouldn't take too long for that machine to beat a Judd Trump or a Ronnie O'Sullivan. No emotions to have to overcome, no attitude ajustments... And much easier to achieve than what Big Blue entailed.
So someone thought the best way to showcase your robotics technology is to set a fake match between a machine and sports star. One of the most disappointing marketing campaigns ever.
Marc Arriaga just like cameras can see better than the human eye and have better focus, some robots can be smarter than humans. like the deep blue vs chess grandmaster. a supercomputer defeated the best chess player in the world. so I hate to break it to you. but what u said is false
How to maximally reduce the actual information content and real imoression of what happened by contantly changing camera angles snd speeds and never simply showing what happened from a useful perspective at real speed for any useful length of time. Brilliant!
Did you even watch the full video? It's not a test. It's a cool commerical for the kuka robots. It even says 'not the best in table tennis, but the best at robotics'
@@cyka_delik9537 This is really a iPhone vs. Android, PS vs Xbox, Mercedes vs Audi and whatever kind of question. Who is best for you depends on what you wanna do with it.
ph0b0rz With advances in robotics, it seems very plausible that a robot could play. They can play chess and Jeopardy and carry military gear up a mountain. The only thing that makes this video interesting is the promise of a real match.
For sure, but soon they will be able to play smoothly. I was working on the same thing, trying to control the KUKA to play table tennis, but a student project is not even close :(
30 seconds into the actual game play, I was thinking "I bet the comments are going to be savage towards the motion sickness inducing camerawork and cutting" I was not disappointed.
Stop trying to make it some big epic thing and show a normal camera angle where you can see the whole table and show it normal speed, all those cuts and slow mo are annoying as hell.
Nah then we would have realized that the robotic arm actually sucks at playing ping pong, that's why we aren't show AT ANY POINT, the actual rate at which the robot returns the balls. It's just a mere ad for these KUKA guys..... yaaaawn. They truly missed an opportunity to make kind of a bigdog demo.
what is it with everyone now adays who wants everything to be fucking real and if its the sightest bit editing they go on a rampage and yell "fake"!!!!!..dude just take the video for what it is and enjoy it...i don't see you coming out with any mind blowing accomplishing videos...
Michael Madrid why should i enjoy.. its not a movie .. :| when i see something super artificial and video tries hard to convince it's not .. i have every right to point it out ..
Michael Madrid It's not about its being fake. It's that the camera work is so distracting that we can't even see what's going on with the robot. I have no doubt it was excellent but how can we get a feel of man v. machine when all we see are flashes of movement and slo-mo? The camera work was trying so hard to be flashy, that it made the whole robot questionable.
azathoth6111985 Well it may be fake, but it is no animation ... watch the making of! Sure the robot is preprogrammed, but it returns the ball .. with massive help of Timo Boll as he plays the ball to the corresponding programmed spot. But there doesn't seem to be CIG or animation.
Maybe you are not acquainted with table tennis, but the behaviour of the ball is unbelievable, 0:42 Timo attacks with a top spin, and the robot receives it with OPEN angle, like answering a backspin, the ball would flown away from the table. 0:44 Timo hits the ball with a chop, and the robot pass the ball with CLOSED angle!! Is obviously fake to the eyes of those who know a bit about table tennis
What is this? It looks like video editing software commercial, not robot commercial. I was waiting for this video to see that outstanding robot performance, but everything is chopped to 1 second slow motions, speed ups and fancy camera moves.
This needs to be re-edited at a wider angle so that both human, table and machine arm can be seen in a single frame, then let the game play from start to finish without any special effects as primary footage ~ no CGI, no jump cuts, slow-mo only on replays.
They overdid BIG TIME with the camera work and editing. So much , it's distracting and you don't get to see how fast the robot arm plays at all. I would have liked to see a wider shot to see how the AI adapted to different shots etc, instead of this fictional "movie-esque" trailer. It's an ad , not the "duel man vs machine" I was expecting , and I'm sure the machine did suck a lot more than showed in the video.
TrasherBiner that's the thing, it didn't play. it was just an ad to demonstrate how fast and accurate the robot arm can move. it didn't play ping pong at all. there was no sensors to detect the balls position from what I can see.
This is not fake. Such a robot is very easy to make by today's standards. We are looking to do much more complex things with AI today. Table tennis would have been impressive 10 years ago. Today, we are talking about fully autonomous cars. There is no comparison in the complexity between these two tasks. And if it was fake why would they make the robot lose? If you will notice, the robot has a single strategy: go for the farthest corners. Robots can move much faster than humans, that is all the are demonstrating here. Once he figures out the robot strategy he is easily able to beat it.
Pretty cool but too much video editing makes me skeptical. I want to see the match in real time speed with no crazy camera angles to see if this robot is legitimately that fast and good at ping pong.
After waiting so long for what was hyped up as some really kick ass match, it comes down to this. An ad. I wanted to know more of how the robot was responding to the ball and how it worked. But no. It was basically just an ad.
i dont think a robot could get a single Point against Timo Boll. Not one who isnt mobile, with that low range. He would just play over, left or right beside it. Also the robot couldnt read his mechanics. Hes giving an insane rotation to the Ball, which decides which position and which power the opponent(the robot) has to give into/with the bat. I wont believe that they´ve developed a program that could calculate that.
Few differential equations plus very simple image recognition-the second thing can be done on a graphics card... I think it depends mainly on the computing power you have, but it isn't entirely unrealistic...
The people at KUKA have no integrity for doing this. We were all expecting a live match of man vs. machine and instead we get this overly edited bs with quick cuts used to hide its fakeness. Highly unethical of KUKA.
Dear spiegel, thank you for your feedback. We are sad to see that you did not enjoy our video, which we believe is a nice vision of our product. However, we did not announce a live game and believe that the video was entertaining for both robot and table tennis enthusiasts. Best regards
KukaRobotGroup Of course YOU would believe that it was entertaining for both robot and table tennis enthusiasts - and you are wrong. And please don't count # of times watched as proof you are right. That's just people like me curious to see the actual match - WITHOUT all of the horribly edited quick cuts, slow motion, close ups and sound effects. Just show the darned match! You can see by the approval vs. disapproval rating that it's running 50/50. In a well done marketing campaign the thumbs up should be MUCH higher than the thumbs down.
spiegel "To all laic who watched this video: A "live" match between a professional vs an industrial machine would riquired a lots of sensors, and a very complicated software to operate. That would be a very difficult thing to do, even if it is not impossible. Who is in the robotics can understand why this is not "live". The video only representsd the movement capability of the robot, what is quite impressive imo. Stop hating, they have to precisely program EVERY SINGLE MOVEMENT, what is in the vid, and Timo Boll had to aim for that one direction, with a precise timing, to do it right. Yeah i would fell of my chair if they would made it "live" but that is way too hard to deliver. Maybe a group of scientists could do it with enough resources. One day... :D Sry for bad english. Good vid." by me
fejlecbezar man you fail at understanding things. its not about if its possible or not. its about kukarobotics said there is gonna be match between human and robot- and it WAS NOT.
spiegelmann82 I'd like to see where. Also i'd like to see where did kuka robotics stated that the game will be LIVE, and legit. It is just you guys who has no clue about robotics, and watched too much sci-fi think like this. A real robot engineer, or a person with brain understands this. This is not about winning, it's a showoff on an industrial robots capability. And also: it is not for u, it is for the costumers. U fail at understanding :)
Well that campaign backfired on them. Everyone was hyped up about a proper match using the latest robotic arms, computer vision and tracking algorithms. What we got instead was scripted Hollywood guff. That was a very public lesson in managing expectations. #norobotuprisingtoday
Exactly, that's why you don't see any actual game play, just artistic and tricky camera work. If this was legitimate they'd simply show actual game play.
Well that was the most disappointing thing I've seen in a while. Staged plays, cgi, outrageous jump cuts. We were promised a duel between man and machine, and what we get is a choreographed fake match with no real meaning behind any of it. It doesn't showcase Timo's skill nor the precision/mobility of the KUKA. That was the whole reason for this video and only the tiniest glimpse of those aspects was shown.
I wish I could see this game like a real table tennis game. Like, from one angle, with no cuts or inserted slowmo.

If they had *just* shown the match without the slo-mo and the rapid-fire editing I'd be interested.
These cuts every 3 seconds make me throw up ... would have loved to watch this a bit, but impossible.
I love how the robot is so fast at the beginning it hits the ball before it even floes off the table but then be hits the ball on the corner and the machine magically has slower reflexes. Also if he is a world class player he would have curved the ball so when the machine hit it, the ball would plunge straight into the net.
It's computer generated animation.
@Joe Bill Scott actual it's not animated in any way, but the programming was different for some scenes. KUKA Takes real actions for that. Take a Look at the Music Video "Automatica" Nigel Stanford Made KUKA Robots Play Instruments and it works, the Sound is not 100% real, because you have the Robot Sounds in it
This is an ad, not an scientific examination.
I liked it :)
@@JoeBillScott
It's probably all practical effects, meaning all robot motions are programmed by a human and shot in sequences to create the illusion of an actual match.
That, and Timo probably has more than enough skill to play off of these pre-programmed motions to make it look like the robot is responding and returning a shot that it could somehow detect well enough and quickly enough to expertly react to, with technology that existed in 2013.
And where is the Video UNCUT ??? Looks like a good Fake. Too much Cuttes that show me that is not real that the Robot is so fast.
+1
I agree
One I finished it, well, it´s just an advertisement.
***** animation? It's been busted anyway.
I pretty sure everyone know its fake... You don't have to comment to say it's fake... OF COURSE ITS NOT REAL...
Do you know who plays this song?
How long is 'ever'? Like 2 weeks?
@@effeniet well at least three years, since this comment brought me back to this video and it definitely still holds up!
@@ACisking24 effects are very nice, but the excessive use of it does harm to the event.
I can give two thumbs up for the creative person who came up with this idea. It is not a showcase demonstration, it is an ad, a short action movie.
i wanna see the outtake where the robot arm smashed the table then enslaved humanity and destroyed the world
The robot killed the editor and uploaded the video itself
max wtf lol
Too far

It's a commercial. not a documentary. It's suppose to be "propaganda" that is bias towards the robot.
DaemonovEarthYou can't handle the real footage....seriously it's boring as shit.
Today the human would win some r robots cam self learn but their slow robots today aren't as advance as humans
Marc Arriaga just like cameras can see better than the human eye and have better focus, some robots can be smarter than humans. like the deep blue vs chess grandmaster. a supercomputer defeated the best chess player in the world. so I hate to break it to you. but what u said is false
"Propaganda"? This is not politics! This is an advertisement for robotics.
How to maximally reduce the actual information content and real imoression of what happened by contantly changing camera angles snd speeds and never simply showing what happened from a useful perspective at real speed for any useful length of time. Brilliant!
Without the unedited footage this test is meaningless.
i mean it's not really meant to be a 'test'... well it is but it's mostly supposed to be a 'cool' video
Did you even watch the full video? It's not a test. It's a cool commerical for the kuka robots. It even says 'not the best in table tennis, but the best at robotics'

Wow, what absolute bullshit. Heavily edited, even the ball was fake at times. Jesus Christ.
So? I don't think anyone is supposed to think that the robots really play... :P
Omg you have such hindsight, please teach us master !
FAAAKE
ph0b0rz With advances in robotics, it seems very plausible that a robot could play.
Awesome! I want to see it in full speed though.
damn director. Stop moving dat camera around
Thank you !!!!
Stop trying to make it some big epic thing and show a normal camera angle where you can see the whole table and show it normal speed, all those cuts and slow mo are annoying as hell.
This just makes it look fake to me more than anything. They wouldn't have to develop a clever ping pong robot for these action film shots.
Why do I get that recommended 6 years later
Real or fake? Doesn't matter. It was a dope ad and definitely grabbed my attention. Would love to see a live match like this though.
Looks pretty fake to me....
It is false, at the beginning in the comments it tells us that it is only a sample of what robots "could" do in the future.
fake, for sure. the only robot able to do this is Forpheus, from Omron. th-cam.com/video/W9WpuameZ0Q/w-d-xo.html
I was really looking forward to a live match. They really dropped the ball on this one (no pun intended).
I'll believe it when i see it in real time. Too much editing.
what is it with everyone now adays who wants everything to be fucking real and if its the sightest bit editing they go on a rampage and yell "fake"!!!!!..dude just take the video for what it is and enjoy it...i don't see you coming out with any mind blowing accomplishing videos...
Michael Madrid why should i enjoy.. its not a movie .. :| when i see something super artificial and video tries hard to convince it's not .. i have every right to point it out ..
Michael Madrid They say its "The unbelievably fast KUKA robot" but make the whole video in slow motion. Get the fuck out of here.
Why am I watching robotics commercials at 1 am?
2 am here 😂
Impressive robot, but just in case ur thinking of selling this in Sweden: "Kukar" means the male Genitalias in Swedish... ;)
3DFX they look like swedish anyway
Isn't it kukar=dicks?
you mistaken as hell, company is KUKU not Kukar...
yep
In spanish cuca or kuka it's slang for female genitals ...
I really wish they would show a non-dramatized version. All the slow mo and the guy pumping his fist was just overkill. I want to see the real thing.
Is absolutely fake. The robot just can't play. Pure animation
azathoth6111985 Well it may be fake, but it is no animation ... watch the making of!
I was waiting for this video to see that outstanding robot performance, but everything is chopped to 1 second slow motions, speed ups and fancy camera moves.
eine der besten Werbungen aller Zeiten...vor Allem weil 2 KUKA Roboter meine Kollegen sind...
This needs to be re-edited at a wider angle so that both human, table and machine arm can be seen in a single frame, then let the game play from start to finish without any special effects as primary footage ~ no CGI, no jump cuts, slow-mo only on replays.
Is this a ping pong match or an action movie trailer? Judging by the fancy camera work, I'd say the latter.
Here because of Kuka's delivery of robots to the Tesla gigafactory :)
I'm in!
Do they play table tennis where?
Better see how the kibrg collects a tractor in Belarus: ))))) th-cam.com/video/pTH22-GuUes/w-d-xo.html
You see a video like this and think more about the DP and the editor than the content, it fails. this video says hello from the 90's
Obviously this is not a real play
I was expecting the robot to just disintegrate the guy with a laser.
I was expecting a giant stompy armored combat robot to enter the room at the end.
If I could actually watch the "match" I would be sooo happy.
I know, right? You really never see a complete volley in the whole damn video. Yet there's like 50,000 cuts.
all this editing makes it look staged honestly, got boring after a minute thirty
oh, you think its staged?!? yeah nah its boring youre right
Super impressive way to promote the robot! Bravo KUKA!
really.... I was looking forward to this....
Well played on the hype build up prior to this vid, but i was expecting more..
If you know basics of Table Tennis you'd find that the robot arm cannot even catch the serve that appears in a regular game.
This is what happens when you let robots direct a video.
yeah, if you just could make a regular version with a static camera like a normal table tennis match, that'd be great!
Timo Boll was like "ok I'll do it with one condition, your robot should let me win"
Pretty cool but too much video editing makes me skeptical. I want to see the match in real time speed with no crazy camera angles to see if this robot is legitimately that fast and good at ping pong.
It is an ad, of course, a very cool ad.
Camera works somewhat slightly ruins the video... It kinda look edited, luh. nonetheless it was entertaining!
When you are genius in making movie, but life drives you to be a marketing guy.
Doesn't seem so genius to me
I think this clip more than every thing shows the difference between human and machine that I hope lasts for ever and it is CREATIVITY
After waiting so long for what was hyped up as some really kick ass match, it comes down to this. An ad. I wanted to know more of how the robot was responding to the ball and how it worked. But no. It was basically just an ad.
That ending was sick
Need more Camera Angles pls
Now it´s 2020 and I start to believe these images...hard to acknowledge this is on TH-cam since 2014
Is there a version of this where you can actually see what happened without the shitty editing getting in the way?
i dont think a robot could get a single Point against Timo Boll.
This is not an answer to the question...
@@mbilca the answer is: there is no video. Lasse Nope said why
it's unbelievable how many people think they actually played. the robot has no way of tracking the ball to begin with.
I know it's fake, but there could have easily been two high speed cameras from top and side off screen.
thegoodhen wouldn't help. the robotics arm would always be at least 3 seconds late and probably still be quite inaccurate.
Why? If you view the scene from 2 angles, you can get the position of the ball in 3D. You can also predict the movement. Why would it be late?
because of information processing times. believe me, 3 seconds for something that complex is a very optimistic guess.
In a well done marketing campaign the thumbs up should be MUCH higher than the thumbs down.
spiegel "To all laic who watched this video:
A "live" match between a professional vs an industrial machine would riquired a lots of sensors, and a very complicated software to operate.
One day... :D

its not about if its possible or not. its about kukarobotics said there is gonna be match between human and robot- and it WAS NOT.
spiegelmann82 I'd like to see where.
KUKA Robot vs. brick wall, now there's a match we would love to see
Well that campaign backfired on them. Everyone was hyped up about a proper match using the latest robotic arms, computer vision and tracking algorithms. What we got instead was scripted Hollywood guff.
That was a very public lesson in managing expectations.

its an AD video, not a sport video...
I bet there are a few people who actually think this is for real.

I wonder what would happen if you put 2 of those KUKA's against each other :P how long would one game last?
I hope you do know that this is all cgi and the KUKA robot can't play like it does in the vid
