    I just got back into the hobby after nearly 25 years, and I've felt like it'll take a couple of years to get my army of Tau fully painted. Overwhelming. Then, it dawned on me that when I did this as a child, I HAD a fully painted army! Not painted GREAT, mind you, but a full High Elf army painted to the 3-color tournament grade: spearmen, archers, some dudes with animal pelts and big-ass axes, a wizard, a mounted commander, a Bolt Thrower (if only I knew...), and a Tirinoc Chariot. That's all I can remember having, anyway. Pretty sure I used the same tiny brush for all of it, putting paint straight from the pot onto the models because I didn't know better. It was a reassuring memory, because if 12 year old me could do it with zero knowledge or resources, then today me can DEFINITELY do it.

    • @dennisweiss6621
      @dennisweiss6621 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thats the mind set! I always tell people that, no matter how bad they paint, as with any skill, they will get better over time, but only by trying and sometimes failing. And no matter how badly paint your army, ANY paintjob will look better then no paint, so you always improve the look, no matter what you do. And last but not least: failing is totally of no consequence, as you can literally paint strip ANY model, no matter how hidiously its done. There is an entire youtube channel about a guy who buys the most hidious ebay armies and then paintstrips them to give them a new life.
      The big difference between back in my school days, and now (I just came back into the hobby, just like you) is that we now have this VAST ressource of youtube with all this passionate people sharing their knowledge with you. Back in school I also applied paint straight from the pot, so thinning it down with a drop of water on a modern wet palette (home made of course) already improved my game by a hundred fold.
      A series of tutorials that brought me back into the fold are the hobby basics by Dana Howl, but there a lot of other good youtubers, like Ninjon over here. Just pick one or two that you like the style of and just let them inspire you.

    Fantastic results for the time spent, the army really does look good. The red OSL did takeover a little too much for my taste, they looked so good before it. Really love how well this turned out in just a week! What kills it for me though, is the red on the eyes. I truly like the idea of glowing eyes, but the amount of it is just... they say "less if more", which is absolutely right, so to me the red is just too much and it takes away from the impact of it. Aside from that, great work man! I sure can't finish models this fast.

    • @tigermunky

      Gonna have to agree with the eyes. I've seen many painters try and get the glowing eye effect and I think it has only ever really worked about 5% of the time and only on very specific models. The rest of the time, it just looks like someone has splattered paint on their face.

      I think the most important aspect of painting armies is cohesion. It’s more important that the quality of your paint job for sure. If you paint one model badly it looks bad. If you paint 20 of them the same way they look alright because they all match.
      I used to paint each and every model as best as I can and by the time I’m done with it I am completely burnt out... and there’s 9 left to paint. Now it’s basecoat, a wash and maybe one or two highlights. Done. I feel much better about that

    Hey Jon, Excellent video - really love seeing the 'paint a whole army quickly' vids and this one was really good cos you got in a lot more detail than most do whilst still coving the basics and staying on time! And you didn't use an airbrush (much) which is normally what turns me off these videos. Nice Job!
    I would really love to see you take them to the next level though for a few reasons:
    First, one thing that may put people off is that the fast paint job isn't the best paint job, but it does get them looking cool and on the table (slaying that grey!). But being able to do that with the freedom of coming back later and tweaking them up to that next level kills that excuse.
    The second is that I think there is skill and tricks in actually taking a "finished" job and making it better without ruining what you've already achieved and I'd be interested to see how you tackle that problem.
    Third seeing all this may feed into the thought process of doing the first fast paint job, thinking ahead to if you come back to them, would be nice to see if you reflect after dialling them up that you would have done the first job differently to accommodate the second (if that makes sense). Love the channel and your work!

    I feel like after the streaking grime and the red glowing eyes, the blue doesn't look blue anymore, it just looks black in the final shot. No one's going to be confusing them for Ultramarines yes, but maybe a bit of a blue wash on the armour panels would be appropriate for that "crank up to 11" you're considering.

    You forgot the main reason armies don’t get painted… parenthood!

    • @damnright1968
      @damnright1968 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then you might suck at it!? Got 3 kids, smallest is 2 years old and I still get my painting done!

    • @chrisgoodier6825
      @chrisgoodier6825 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@damnright1968 I think that is an unfair/bold assumption.
      It would be equally unfair if someone assumed, based solely on your comment, that you spend too much time painting and not enough time with your family. I choose to assume that this is not the case.
      I will concede I should have said parenthood is ‘one reason’ not the ‘main reason’ armies do not get painted.
      Everyone has different circumstances and challenges with respect to family, personal, parental and work life that might prevent them from doing as much painting/hobbying as they would like.

    I think a big excuse you missed in this video is motivation/inspiration. Too many times we pass up painting because we just don't feel like we can paint our best or we just don't feel like painting right now. This is especially strong if you are a little to eager for a project and buy a mountain of models right away and you overwhelm yourself. The finished project just seems too far away.
    Personally, the way to beat that is habit. Sit down and force yourself to paint once a week, or least two hours a day, or even just pick a detail on a model and get it done. Eventually, as you see your project actually start to come together, the motivation and inspiration will come. You'll look at the work that you've done and see that it's more than the work you have left, and the finished project is just around the corner.

    I would like to see the eyes of the models get accentuated even more. Maybe by an even brighter red just in the eyes. Currently the glow effect is a bit to mashy for my taste.

    • @TylerProvick
      @TylerProvick 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree. Just put some white in the center of the eye. Often coloured things like lightsabers are actually white with a coloured glow around it

    Love the continued videos. Its great that we can see the areas where a good painter can take shortcuts as necessary to what you want your army to look like and know that you can come back later. Challenge - can you bring this back into a future area with your normal flare to cover how to clean up your speed painted army and bring them to that next level? Thanks for the content.
