Honestly I like the approach of “I paint an army in a way that gets the most out of the hobby” rather than “paint lots fast”. Sometimes it’s fun to just watch someone paint and hear some commentary. Don’t feel pressured to make every video about something new. 👍
Love how Jon keeps trying to convince himself he’s speed painting an entire army in every other video and then can’t help himself and starts doing 4 layers of highlights on the skin and only does like 4 miniatures 😂
Despite recent disability you are one of the few creators that can get me out of my funk and working on my massive pile of gray, Not sure what it is but you always make me feel like I can knock some minis out from my pile of 10s of 1000s. With the extent of my nerve damage I found that 3D printing is one of the few things I can do so for the better part of 3 years I have had 2-6 printers running each day without assembling a single army. When I look at my mountain of shame its over whelming but then I put you on and I feel like I can knock a few minis out. Thank you.
Can't stress how important it is to keep your batches at a reasonable amount for you. I was painting the miniatures for Zombicide: Dead or Alive, and would get burnt out just in one group of 8 zombies, rushing the details on the last step(s), my paint job suffering for it. Moving forward, I had to drop it down to groups of 4, and maybe if I get more efficient/patient with my painting, I will be able to go back up to 8.
Agreed. I'd like to start painting my Tyranids army, and although I'm already stealing your scheme for my Parasite of Mortrex, I'd like to see how you tackle a mid-sized monster with this method.
Thanks I needed to hear that “pick on technique to focus on with army project so you can get good at it” sigh….i don’t know why that wasn’t so obvious, however I’m new to this hobby and I feel like a sponge that has gotten WAY to full and often feel like I’m just trying to figure out how to do ALL the techniques right away! By far, best advice I’ve heard…well that and the advice “just have fun with it” 😊 Thanks! Can’t wait to see what you do next! I would like to see a character so I can see how you change up your style for the bigger dudes that lead.
I've been painting armies for about 25 years now on and off. Every army I've done since my early twenties I've picked a particular thing I wanted to focus on nailing for that army. My last army was heresy Salamanders and I wanted to learn how to use multiple oil washes to get some smooth polychromatic shading down, aiming to get a look close to the colour plates in the heresy books. The army before that was yellow sisters of battle which was all about setting up a bright yellow that looked rich and multi-toned without taking a million years, also branching out into mass producing putty rolled bases. Before that I did nighthaunt, learning how to make smooth gradients look good. Pick something you really want to nail, try a few things with that specifically until you've got it looking great, then you can just fill in the rest in whatever way feels comfy. At the end, even if everything isn't perfect, that one thing you nailed will give you an anchor to be proud of and a new skill to be comfy with!
Great scheme; I loved the different colors of skintones and the varied cloths you chose. They are different enough to look ragtag but still be cohesive. Very nice, indeed.
"You're not going to just slap a bunch of Contrast paints all over" -- WRONG. It's exactly what I would do if I were to buy this box. Which I won't, 'cause my pile of shame is large enough already 😅
Skaven on the painting table and there just happens to be water/flood damage in the basement? I'd get some extra large rat traps, pronto! Good luck with the repairs. The models look great, as always.
Can your leader rat riding the larger rat have a base like a Hamster cage? Like toilet paper, toilet paper rolls, small wood chips. Basically like a kids first pet that his parents helped him set up.
I dunno what this will do the algorithm (or your sanity) but I’d be quite happy if you just painted your Skaven in every video from now until they’re all finished
Those Skaven are stunning Jon. I'd like to see you paint the Ratling Warpblaster next. It's my favourite mini from this release. Sorry to hear about the basement. I hope it's easy to sort out.
I just bought a full GSC army of 2x old CP, 2xBattleforce, 2x new CP, and the HQ's. This video has given me inspiration on how I can paint the amount of units and still keep it fresh. I'll definitely be watching this again
My Skaventide arrived yesterday, I've been ratioing myself by only assembling one squad at a time. Already fully completed an entire squad of Liberators? with a (less than perfect) golden NMM attempt. and now my first squad of Clanrats are on their way!
I’m pretty new to painting. So far I’ve just done a spearhead for idoneth Deepkin. One of the hardest things for me to accept is that I need to try new things even if they’re going to not look good the first time I try it. For example, my thrall did not turn out well. But I learned some things and by the time I got to my shark, it’s been my best painted model.
I really like the army scheme. The rough and scavenged look to it brings it together despite not being a uniform color. I'm stealing this idea for my orks. 😁
That was an incredibly satisfying result. I do the same "hide my mistakes" technique with wet blends. just needs a bit of weave or hatches or chips. Job done!
I feel like key really is to focus on using techniques you enjoy doing (with the possibility of adding one to practice), making incremental progress, and failing forward (like your tip with the scratches on the wet blending). You will finish if you enjoy the process and set achievable goals for the time you have at the painting table.
I just love the look of those cloths and armour! I'm still a long way from achieving that level, most work has to be done with diluting the paints and painting more. Experience is the best remedy! Thank you for the uprising video!
I'm so glad someone is taking the time to do a decent job of these model's not just another speedpaint ! I like the randomly scattered colour triade bringing in uniformity not a uniform ❤ Well done 🎉
Shadows normally shouldn't be desaturated; rather it's the opposite. It's direct light that desaturates. Shadows increase saturation, but darkens the tone and changes the hue (typically making it cooler, depending on the environment).
Great video!! I am currently listening to your Podcast while getting back into the hobby and heard you and Scott talking about what people watching on youtube want to see. For me, it is just watching you paint (whatever) and enjoying your voiceover. It is just relaxing to watch and motivates me (and probably others as well) to keep hobbying. Dont need anything else. So please keep up the awesome content and thank you, I love it!
Love the vid! As always, great info and advice. On a different note, have you considered using paint pens for simple quick stuff? I just watched Jazza's new video on some paint pens and was impressed by the speed and coverage of the markers! I wouldn't use them "hero" or competition pieces obviously, but for fast simple things the markers seem legit! Maybe chech out the video, it's titled "Ohuhu's new PAINT markers? NOT what I expected..." New paints/toys to try out.
I have terrible ADD, and finishing an army has pretty much never worked out for me. I've just bought the new Blood Angels box, and I'm HOPING to all hell I can focus for long enough to finish it before my brain decides to fuck off and do something else. It's really hard, because I really enjoy painting, but I also really need to be inspired and in the correct mindspace AND have ample time to do so.
Realy like how the TMM came out! Very nice and subdued. I think it is a great base to push them higher if you painted them for display, like historical painters are great at.
I really like the video. It makes me eager to start painting skaven. Can you do the rattling warpblaster next? It's my favorite mini from the boxset. And I would love to see your approach.
I'm just glad to hear I'm on the right track learning; painting my first army custodes; I tried multiple methods for the scheme I wanted to do and settled on layering. I liked how it looks best. I tried the direct color, metallics, and such but layering seemed to get the best look. So layering for the scheme and just doing metallics on other areas. It's been a fun process and I'm enjoying it just 8+ hrs per model is painful and once I start painting I can't get myself to put the paint brush down until the model is complete. Still need to do basing but I think I will do that separately to keep on doing the focus on one method at a time.
Vote for a rat ogre. Thanks for this video! Great inspiration for a newbie painter. Watching your process filled in a lot of gaps in my understanding of how to progress my skills, so, from one wet basement to another, cheers!
Would be great to see a video about painting white. I’m a new painter and decided to pick white scars as my chapter and yeah…. It’s taking some time hahah
I've been trying your flesh tone formulas out on my clanrats. I figured every 5 I'd try out a new color scheme. I'm 4 schemes in now. My favorite so far is the Burnt Red / Ratskin Flesh / Luminous Flesh (I substituted Flayed One Flesh here). Least favorite is the one you mixed the Red Rougue and Knorne Red. It came out EXTREMELY pink for some reason. I could't find any of that Game Color Purple you had in another scheme at my LGS so I tweaked that recipe. Went Terrestial Titan Purple, Dark Warm Grey and Vampyric Flesh. Came out pretty interesting. And the Barak-Nar/Mocca Skin/Pastel Pink came out pretty good too.
I really love the look of that basing scheme. Not owning a 3d printer, I'm stuck with some of the more widely accessible "basing bits" kits out there, and most of them are just not a good fit for rank and file basing. I've got a few boxes of the Gamer's Grass basing bits, and the bits are just too big to be viable on the smaller bases without a lot of work. I'd love it if there was an easy to get box of those smaller cobble stone pieces to buy.
This box set is the opportunity for you to do a full metalic paint on the stormcasts. I personnaly would love to see a video "what metalic paint should I buy ?" and show it on the stormcasts.
Man Epic Basing is really rising in popularity, it seems like right after I got my order all the youtubers are mentioning them! They really do make great stuff
This is one of my favorite paint schemes I ever have seen! I love the colors and the different painting methods. It has inspired me to get back and grind my custom cities of sigmar army! These looked phenomenal and amazing video per usual🤩 Let’s see the storm cast paint scheme in a similar way!
I’d say get a hero knocked out. Maybe the Grayseer? It would give you a chance to try out how you can change up the placement of your color triad-not to mention showing off what you get when the time that went into the models goes into one hero.
Even though I don't play Warhammer and am none too fond of GW in general? I always get inspiration and ideas from watching your videos and that matters more to me. I'd like to see what you can do with a Rat Ogre, here.
These look excellent and really like the painting detail (besides the mini detail also ofc) you put on those, and like that you had lot of different skin tones, like you said to keep it fresh and just if they're all coming together from all kinda different places
Thanks Ninjon for making all the videos. I feel like I’m on a wave length with you and I’ll be painting my army very soon. It’s been really helpful for my painting phase now with the hobby.
These look really good Jon. I'm planning on starting Skaven with the new set also. This is nice motivation because it is daunting to think about painting a "horde" army. Great work.
They look awesome, thank you for the inspiration! 😍 I don't particularly like the looks of straight up Contrast/Speed paints and I agree with your opinions of speed painting, in the end I would be disappointed and see the results as a waste of time and effort, I'd rather give it that little extra at the cost of more time ofc. I will try to emulate some of your triads when my Skaventide set arrives. 😁
Man much like 40k 9th and 10th edition with the major refresh of Nids and Necrons, these Skaven dont dissappoint either for AoS. I gotta say as someone who doesnt care for Nids or Skaven, Im just glad theres parts of the community who are finally getting to enjoy their factions getting the spotlight and face lift they deserve between 40k and AoS. It really makes me happy to see others get to enjoy the "big new thing" and maybe not so much their wallets and plastic crack addiction lol. Im just sitting back taking my time on a killteam unit, not spending money or going crazy while others get to party it up with new Skaven and Nids, those are thr times I enjoy seeing in the hobby too
Goddayum, these look nice for a chaff unit! Skaven warmachine painted next would be nice, but something from Spearhead Skaven list makes more sense. Perhaps hero on rat, especially since it allows for higher painting level!
An, awesome work. Your channel is getting so big & so many tips that it would be handy if you were to pin some links to your previous videos as you're going through techniques and such. Keep up the awesome work
when army painting I like to reward me after doing a lot of batch painting, so usually I'll do 10 guys for X units then I get a bigger piece and work on it as I find character or monster more fun to do than infantry. So next up, the lord on the big rat ?
Meanwhile Vince is watching this, looking at his seven billion armies painted to display standard and wondering if he needs seven billion and one armies painted to-
Hey Ninjon theres a few times where you use paints and i dont see you mentioning their name or showing which one it is like @1103 where your painting the chain mail on the rat. Did i miss something? what is that paint called? Also what did you use to paint the tails? When you say mid tone gray whenever your painting the base what paints are those I dont know what im looking for.
Hey Jon, I know this is an old video but I hope you see it. When you show off the triads before doing the skin, are you really not doing any mixes? Just layering one after the other with no mixing? It sounds like you say you didn't mix any paint but im finding some of the recipes difficult to replicate without mixing.
Nice technical video please tell me you will take the same attention for all skaven models. Your are for sure one of my best painter ever !! Thanks a lot . I think the ogors rats and the gatling machine can be in your next videos .😉
the rat ogres look pretty slick, i'd love to see one or even all from the box painted by you. would also be interesting to hear if you would paint all in one go or each one separately when you (theoretically) paint this entire box as an army
Nice army Jon i have, more than 5000 points of old metal skaven, i wanna use a similar scheme, but any tip or link to old video for Wood colors is my weakness
Honestly I like the approach of “I paint an army in a way that gets the most out of the hobby” rather than “paint lots fast”. Sometimes it’s fun to just watch someone paint and hear some commentary. Don’t feel pressured to make every video about something new. 👍
Love how Jon keeps trying to convince himself he’s speed painting an entire army in every other video and then can’t help himself and starts doing 4 layers of highlights on the skin and only does like 4 miniatures 😂
all my paintschemes start of with 5-8 steps and end up having 20-35...
Truth!
I feel attacked by this comment.
@@Habitt5253it wasn't directed at you bud, so that's abit wild
Hey, he did do half of what he wanted :P

I see way to little ogor painting videos. I could really use some advice.

Oh boy. They look great! The bold saturated colours work really well and will totally make this stand out! Please paint the big gun dude next
Great scheme; I loved the different colors of skintones and the varied cloths you chose. They are different enough to look ragtag but still be cohesive. Very nice, indeed.

Boy are these new Skaven nice though. But NO! I... must... resist...
I'll keep saying it, but your intro is still so good. At this point, it's also classic. Amazazing.
Skaven on the painting table and there just happens to be water/flood damage in the basement? I'd get some extra large rat traps, pronto! Good luck with the repairs. The models look great, as always.

I really like the army scheme. The rough and scavenged look to it brings it together despite not being a uniform color. I'm stealing this idea for my orks. 😁
Your understanding and approach to colour theory is inspiring
They look so good!!!!!!!!!!! Can you paint Rat Ogres next, and make the green gemstones really pop like a fluecent green bright lightning power!!!
Yeah the rain here has been crazy lately. As a fellow MN basement dweller, i hope the flooding wasn't too bad
That was an incredibly satisfying result. I do the same "hide my mistakes" technique with wet blends. just needs a bit of weave or hatches or chips. Job done!
Looks way more detailed than everything I ever paint. And I am fine with that. Great Job, Ninjon. Thank you for inspiring me.
I feel like key really is to focus on using techniques you enjoy doing (with the possibility of adding one to practice), making incremental progress, and failing forward (like your tip with the scratches on the wet blending).

Rotating through the "uniform" colors so that each model only has 2/3 is a really cool effect!
I really must get around to trying this wet blending technique.

You are developing a world-class talent for color theory with huge jumps every year. Loved your content since day 1, please keep on keeping on.
If you want my input, I would like to see the Grey Seer painted. Don't stop there, and paint all the Skaven!
I'm just glad to hear I'm on the right track learning; painting my first army custodes; I tried multiple methods for the scheme I wanted to do and settled on layering. I liked how it looks best. Hey Jon, what putty did you use on the bases where you stick the basing bits into?
Been trying to get stuff done and this video is helping. Thanks Jon, fighting the grey harder than ever.
Amazing result, love your work! Would love to know a bit more about how you chose your colour triads for each section - any info would be great!
I'm loving the technique & colour selection system used for the skin. Definitely going to try that on my next models.
We're proud of these rats too, Jon. Seriously, these look awesome!
These really are varied interesting and unique. Love the scheme and different from drab rats. Amazing and inspiring
Love love love!! And I wanna see a big creature! Might be the inveterate dnd player in me, but I love a centerpiece monster lol
These looked phenomenal and amazing video per usual🤩
Let’s see the storm cast paint scheme in a similar way!
i think painting the big rat cannon next would be nice different approach because its one big model instead of many small one
Rats look amazing! Big like for the different robes and skin/fur colors :)
Definitely the clawlord on gnawbeast should be done, next week, week after, whatever works for you, but I'd love to see how you attack that project
Thanks Ninjon for making all the videos. I feel like I’m on a wave length with you and I’ll be painting my army very soon. It’s been really helpful for my painting phase now with the hobby.
These sculpts are great! Might be my favorite ones from the new box.
Paint whatever you want brother, something bigger would be kool though! Great video and awesome looking paint job as always!
These are fantastic!! Super inspiring! Would love to see a series of videos of you painting up this army!!
I would love to see you paint the rat ogors and maybe make a doomwheel and paint that too :)
‘Be proud of your work’ love that Jon!
These look really good Jon. I'm planning on starting Skaven with the new set also. This is nice motivation because it is daunting to think about painting a "horde" army. Great work.
My vote is the Ratling Warpblaster, as I'm still nowhere near confident enough to paint metallics to a reasonably high degree
lets goooo new ninjon video, oh what a day, what a lovely day!
Holy damn, that will be an awesome army.
I haven’t seen anyone do something cool with those rat ogres yet, I’m sure you would make them look incredible!
What did you use on the bases to stick the floor tiles to bases
Pretty sure that's milliput
I love the effects you did on the plague boys, so, that's my vote
They look awesome, thank you for the inspiration! 😍
I don't particularly like the looks of straight up Contrast/Speed paints and I agree with your opinions of speed painting, in the end I would be disappointed and see the results as a waste of time and effort, I'd rather give it that little extra at the cost of more time ofc.
I will try to emulate some of your triads when my Skaventide set arrives. 😁
I'd love to see my favorite golden demon winner paint some rat ogres, my favorite models from the new box!
PAINT THE GREY SEER! Clanrats look awesome!

I'd love to see Jon paint some Quar models!
Jon. What the heck?! Those look insanely good. I'm so pumped to get to my ratz right now.

Skaven warmachine painted next would be nice, but something from Spearhead Skaven list makes more sense. Perhaps hero on rat, especially since it allows for higher painting level!

when army painting I like to reward me after doing a lot of batch painting, so usually I'll do 10 guys for X units then I get a bigger piece and work on it as I find character or monster more fun to do than infantry. So next up, the lord on the big rat ?
They look great! Can't wait to see more and the army grow!
These are absolutely stunning, good lord!
Meanwhile Vince is watching this, looking at his seven billion armies painted to display standard and wondering if he needs seven billion and one armies painted to-
would love to see you paint something big from the set
Lively Stones are my favorite new brit pop band!
amazing vid, my only critique is that the hyperspeed shaking of the mini makes my eyes go funny xD but appreciate the process insight
Great looking Rats! I think Rat Ogres would be awesome for the next video!
Wow these look fantastic. Congrats, John
This is a tutorial on how to aspire to paint an army you'll be proud of. I don't see myself ever finishing that army at this level of detail.
Hey Jon, I know this is an old video but I hope you see it. When you show off the triads before doing the skin, are you really not doing any mixes? Just layering one after the other with no mixing? It sounds like you say you didn't mix any paint but im finding some of the recipes difficult to replicate without mixing.
Great video! I'd enjoy either a Rat Ogre, or a Grey Seer (if that's in the box, I haven't looked) in your sewer rat style. That would be fun.
Nice technical video please tell me you will take the same attention for all skaven models. Your are for sure one of my best painter ever !! Thanks a lot .
I think the ogors rats and the gatling machine can be in your next videos .😉
Speed paint it all, then come back for highlights. I love the rats
the rat ogres look pretty slick, i'd love to see one or even all from the box painted by you. would also be interesting to hear if you would paint all in one go or each one separately when you (theoretically) paint this entire box as an army
Nice army Jon i have, more than 5000 points of old metal skaven, i wanna use a similar scheme, but any tip or link to old video for Wood colors is my weakness
