Details for those wondering.. We did this trip in late November - early December. It was about 3 weeks all up, which was just enough time to do everything and not be too rushed. I would say 1 month would be the ultimate amount of time but that's a more difficult time frame for most people plus more expense. So 3 weeks is that sweet spot. I also think spring - start of summer is the best time to road trip the south island. There's still plenty of snowcapped mountains but everything is lush and the lupins are flowering, it truly was magical. Anytime from spring to autumn would be incredible though, you won't be disappointed! 🙌 List of all the places we went in the description.
Hi, this brought back a lot of memories. Forty years ago my wife and I plus our son’s dog went on a years trip around the South Island, we only stopped off at two camping grounds! I fished every shore, lake, river and stream we could find and hunted in any bush that had deer, pigs and rabbits. I talked to every fisherman and hunter I came across for info and for spots to camp free. I found the farmers were the most helpful with permission to camp on their land. As an ex serviceman of 20 years I had plenty of contacts to call on and the people of the South Island were tremendously helpful and friendly. After this trip we ended up buying a deer farm in Rotorua, overlooking the lakes and volcanoes. Great times and memories. The hardest is the first step, for an ex Para, that was an easy decision. You will be back, this place is Paradise! Cheers mate. Harera
That sounds like some incredible memories you’ve got to look back on. I’m very glad to hear you enjoyed the video and it brought back those memories for you. I’ll definitely be back!! 🙌
Stumbled here….been watching utube videos to plan a South Island trip……I was not sure but this video is just perfection ………well captured.OMG you have just nailed it.❤
Great video! The cinematography, the photos you captured, the simplicity of the vlog...really great quality. I'll be there soon, so I'm looking forward to checking some of these spots out. Thanks!
Very underrated channel man. Production quality on point. Did this exact same trip with the wifey few years ago. Watching your vid just brought back those memories.
Thanks heaps! I'm glad it can bring back all those memories for you 🙌 I'll never forget how it felt to see these crazy landscapes for the first time so I'm glad I put all the effort into filming it!
Beautiful cinematography, and the ideal chilled way to explore the South Island. Absolutely stunning. If you're prepared to get outdoors and really experience the journey, that's the perfect way to do it.
Thanks heaps! I loved the way we travelled around in the van, definitely felt immersed in the landscapes as we road tripped around. 3 weeks was just enough time to get everything done as well. Glad you loved the video 🙏
Welcome across the ditch there you West islanders, Pleased to have ya here, Aotearoa,4seasons in a matter of minutes 😊 Stunning video of My country,Well done Always a pleasure to have our cuzzies over here,
Just returned from our south island road trip, we went to almost the same spots and campsites! Your video bings back so much memories so vividly, and I really miss NZ😢Thanks for the video❣
Thanks! This was Late November. I would definitely recommend spring-summer time for road trips. I would gladly go back anytime of year but I reckon winter would be too cold for van life 😂
Brilliant video guys. We toured around the South Island in a camper van also about 5 years ago and went to many of the places in your video. This brought back great memories for us. You have great video editing skills also. The footage was amazing. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful video and photography. It's true, to see South Island beauty you can go by road, but best to hike a few tracks as well. All the best for the rest of the trip, I reckon you've hit the highlights already, but there's stuff around Nelson etc.
Well done. I really enjoyed watching that. If you ever do go back, and especially to Mt Cook, there's a hike I think you'd really enjoy. You have to book it in advance, but it's cheap & that's up to the Mueller Hut.
Ripper video mate, one of the better ones I've seen for a campervan trip. Really well put together. We're doing a similar trip in a few weeks. Did you guys mostly do free camping sites? Unsure how often you need to plug into a powered site with these vans. Thanks mate
Hands down the best NZ travel video I’ve watched so far. Superb job with every frame! I always have one question…you have many shots of your van driving past…is that really your van? If it is, would you mind sharing your workflow for taking such a shot? Would love to know what’s the most efficient way to do it,Thank you so much!
Thanks heaps! Sincerely appreciate that! haha yeah that is our van in all them shots and there was no easy way of capturing it, it was a lot of work 😂 Basically just had to find little spots to pull over then re-drive that section while I filmed it. The hardest part was finding turn around spots in the tighter sections
@@jackschmidt98 Thanks so much Jack! Kudos to you for all the effort and time put into every frame, only videographers whos done it before can truly appreciate how much hard work is put into an awesome video like this! 👍
So glad you enjoyed your trip around the South Island, a tip for any other visitors if you are going to do both Islands do the North Island first, also don't miss Stewart Island.
Ultimate inspo. Thanks so much for sharing your experience and creating this beautiful video! Definitely makes me excited to pursue my Working Holiday Visa in NZ later this year. :)
Hey Jack great video, what do you think of this itinerary? Day 1: Spend the day in Christchurch Day 2: Christchurch to Hanmer Springs Day 3: Hanmer Springs to Kaikoura Day 4 - 5: Marlborough Wine Region Day 6: Marlborough to Nelson Day 7 - 9: Abel Tasman National Park Day 10 - 11: West Coast & Glaciers Day 12 - 15: Wanaka & Queenstown Day 16: Milford Sound day trip Day 17 - 19: Invercargill, Stewart Island and The Catlins Day 20: Dunedin Day 21: Lake Tekapo stargazing Day 22: Return to Christchurch
Love your vid! What camera lens range did you use the most? Your shots look like you used mostly a tele zoom? I’m going there in early Nov and trying to decide on what photo gear to take. Nice pics as well! 👍🏽👍🏽
Great trip, love your video. We had our van for 19 days and it was way too short. But enough to do a fast tour around North and South Island. Check out our videos - all in Portuguese though 😂.

100% agree with you. Had to find a good balance with the length of video but just long enough to show the scenery but I also didn't want it too long so it still has good pacing and people won't get bored. The original length was up around 20min then I just trimmed back from there to make it flow a lot nicer
