I bet it was expensive, as everything here caters for the tourist.😢 but now it definitely is on my bucket list to tour around my country. I've lived here for 20 years, so it's about time I found out exactly what brings us back here time and time again. Thank you again.
You came to NZ! Thank you for visiting. I took this train in the 1990s and it was so much fun. I wish we had more passenger trains here given the price of flying.
As a kid we used to travel on what was previously called the overlander and overnight service was the northerner from Wellington when they used to use older blue carriages. I moved to Australia in 2011 and the train looks like it’s been updated and more tourist oriented since then!
The coaches for the three tourist trains in NZ were built at Hillside workshops in Dunedin 2010 to 2012. There are 17 in the fleet, with three variants. A standard AK carriage seats 63. The AKC, Cafe car, seats 10. They were new carriages to be built in NZ since 1943.

Thanks for taking me along on your wonderful travels- I really enjoy your videos. The trains are fun, but I like the ships, too. Keep up the great work!
Ah this is nostalgic... I went for a trip with my family to NZ and we travelled around in a camper van. We started on the north island and then took the ferry to the south island. I look forward to your next kiwi installment!
There was a night sleeping train that did that route but sadly it stopped. These day it is more of a tourist sightseeing train than a practical means of getting from A to B.
Love it. First time I took the train from Wellington to Auckland was in the 1980s and we went on the Northener overnight train in one of the sleeper cars with beds. Not long after that they stopped running sleeper cars. We came back on the Silver Fern, which was a Japanese built train they used to use for the daytime service.
It's a great shame that we have no country wide rail network in New Zealand. Most of our trains are really mostly for tourists. Most people who don't have a car either fly from one city to another or go by bus.
I like the videos which has original track/real environment sound, It feels as if we are present at the location. Some TH-camrs mix music which ruins the experience of watching such videos.
Woah, I'm so excited you took this! I love watching your videos and since I live in NZ I thought about taking this train to enjoy the sights! Now it's definitely in my plans
Gracias!

"🚂 Just completed the 11-hour journey on New Zealand’s Northern Explorer from Auckland to Wellington, and it was absolutely breathtaking! The stunning landscapes, from rolling hills to lush forests and beautiful rivers, made every minute worth it. If you're looking for a unique way to experience the beauty of New Zealand, this train ride is a must! 🇳🇿✨"
Even if NZ has scenic views, railway system in the country seems obsolete, if not backward. Constant noise from the tracks tells you that NZ has fallen behind investing in the trains. I hope you enjoyed it Kuga because I didn’t. Thanks
I agree with you. For a country that depends heavily on tourism, you would think investing in its rail network obvious! I haven't lived in NZ for almost 30 years and it still seems like things aren't progressing with the times. Besides all of that,it's still good to see the landscape. Nostalgic
Perhaps it's due to our love affair with cars. Trying to get Kiwis out of their cars is akin to extracting a wisdom tooth. Auckland trains, for example, barely have passengers. 😢 Perhaps it's a sense of freedom. Liberation in that you can dictate time and place at your own leasure. Trying to get Kiwis to use bicycles. Building separate lanes, yet they remain unused much of the time.
Great video! I am hooked now on NZ! Its on my bucket list of must see places; the meal service looked great and the whole experience is very different from what we have to cope with in southern Africa! I think that there is also a similar train that crosses the South Island?
Don't be fooled by these glossy video there is a dark underbelly of racism to white and Asians and loads of violence to the previous mentioned people - leave you to work out who the perpetrators. are
Thank you Kuga for another wonderful video. The scenery looked amazing, especially from that open air car, the food made me hungry, and the inside of the Wellington station looked very nice.
The train seems to have been hauled by the same diesel locomotivew throughout. The Auckland to Wellington North Trunk Main Line starts (from the north end) with 25kV electrification for suburban trains, then a gap with no overhead wires, then a long central section which is all electrified at 25kV, then another unelectrified section, finally there are 1500v DC overhead wires into Wellington for the suburban trains. This is inefficient - the whole line should be 25kV electrified - and it also means the journey is slower than it should be. In some clips of this film you can see the catenary supports flicking by, in other clips there are none. Did the diesel locomotive haul the train the whole way? Or was an electric locomotive used to take the train over the long electrified middle section? The film from inside the train shows how attractive NZ North Island is - many thanks.
the average wage is higher than all those Asian countries, and it's reflected in the price. Also, this train service basically serves as a sightseeing route rather than a means of transportation. I once took a train from Zurich to Bern as a tourist. Only 1 hour, guess how much? NZ$80!
At 9:52, along with hearing the Windows music I swear I saw the Teletubies and around 12:12, I am sure I saw Legolas, Aragorn and Frodo. Was I the only one? 😮
I went on this train once way back in 2004 when I first came to NZ but have since then visited Japan for myself. It ain't no Shinkansen thats for sure 😅
think i caught the same train on 31 december 2001, but it broke down 1/2 way, i was a long distance phonecall to anywhere as compensation. So i called UK, for 35mins. The journey took about 15 hours!
There are only two pax services in the South Island. Christchurch to Greymouth which goes across the South Island, and the Christchurch to Picton service which runs half the length of the South Island. Christchurch is around the middle of the South Island, on the east coast. Greymouth is directly cross on the west coast, and Picton is at the northern end of the island, servicing the ferries across Cook Straight to Wellington. There used to be far more extensive inter city pax rail services all over NZ, but they have all been cut back to almost nothing today and these days they are geared towards low standard tourist services.
Somewhat expensive but a great journey. Beautiful countryside. Highlights are the Raurimu Spiral, several impressive viaducts, and the trip down the Kapiti Coast down to Wellington, one of my favourite little cities. The train arrived early? Mine was over an hour late, which I believe is far more typical for this train. Yes I enjoyed the open air "Cattle car" that they use on their scenic trains. Quite a breezy ride.
The Trans Alpine is better, and the Coastal Pacific is as good. Just done all three. The spiral was interesting but then I have done a spiral inside a mountain in the Rockies.
"The Windows XP music" one was good. 😂😂😂😂😂. Thank you for this lovely video.
Thanks!
Thank you!🤝

Excellent video. Stable shots held long enough to let the eye feast on the details. No stupid fast cutting as if this was a car chase. Great job.
What a wonderful ride! Thanks for taking us along 😃

Exactly
Oh wow, you're in NZ! Hope you're enjoying it here. I barely even started the video, but couldn't resist commenting first. Lol.
Very nice country..nice peoples..fantastic natural beauties..all in one in this beautiful small place.
NZ is truly a beautiful country… 💐🏆✌️… Rail may not be broad gauge yet it delivers stunning exposure to scenery of a dreamy landscape!!
✌️🙏🏆
Very nice ride on the Kiwi Rail, Northern Explorer in New Zealand from Auckland to Wellington.

When I was on it, it took twelve hours & was much enjoyed!
Those bakery items in the cafe car looked pretty good. Better than our Amtrak for sure!
Thank you for taking me along. Very beautiful.
THIS IS VERY COMFORTABLE AND MOST BEAUTIFUL KIWI TRAIN.THANKS FOR THIS EXCELLENT VIDEO.
As per usual, another great travel video from Kuga!
The open air deck is one of its cool kind

No it doesn't taste like carrot, but it's so good. Very different having a viewing car with no seats.

You are right, NZ Government does not invest in rail. Only roads.

Always weird to see your own country on travel videos - especially 13:12 where I literally live across the water there.

It’s diesel the whole way for our regional/intercity trains. All urban trains are electrified (Auckland and Wellington)
