I had this game as my only Mario Party game in my childhood and... yes, I agree with most of this. I still think the boards have lots of potential, like you could change things a little and it would be perfect (expect Goomba's greedy gala, always was my least favorite board, I don't get why people like this one, it's doomed). Even though I agree about most of the stuff with the minigames, I can't think of any one that's actually bad (except some 1v3s), and it has very few luck-based minigames, so I still consider this collection to be great. Weird thing about this Mario Party: I actually think the main mode works best in 2v2 (if you can get 4 people to play, because the AI suck). The 2v2 mode in this game works exactly like the 1v1v1v1 mode, except you can use items from your partner's inventory, your coins+stars are added with you partner's at the end, and there are no 1v3 minigames (which have the worst minigames anyway). This isn't much but it changes everything in MP4. For example you can have a player stand in front of an orange pipe while the other buys a super mini-mushroom, you can use your partner's mini-mushroom instead of yours to prevent his inventory from filling up, you can buy a super mega-mushroom for your partner so he can be freed from Toad's midway Madness eternal trap, you can have one player buy a crystal ball and the other one playing it on the same turn (yes it's broken, but the other team can do that as well so it's still fun), you can even steal coins from your partner if you have like no coins, so you both have enough to buy a star/magic lamp. There are so much strategies you can do with this, and it makes navigating the boards less frustrating (because you have 2 chances at going to the right direction in Koopa's seaside soiree, you'll still both go in the wrong direction but al least you have more chances). I consider it the true way of playing MP4. But you need 4 players.
Nice! I think the reason why MP4 is a fan favourite, is because it was the first GC entry of the franchise. We were going through a new generation, with nintendo becoming rather experimental with their games, which gave this title an air of familiarity. The first generation jump of the series, with improved presentation values like the graphics or sound quality...
I kinda dislike the game boards in Mario Party 4 because many of them are so luck-based. It is often determined by luck which direction you will go at intersections.
I completely agree - I never understood why MP4 is the favourite of so many people I'd have to assume it's similar to Pokemon where it's the first one they played so there's some nostalgia involved or because it was the first 3D one so it impressed a lot of people at the time? Or maybe even because it's the only GameCube Mario Party where you can play as DK. I did like the birthday theming and having a host for each board and the music is as good as always but I'd still rather play a different Mario Party since I find 4's gimmicks and boards to bring down the experience rather than enhance it.
Always interesting to see someone else arrive at the same conclusion, but for different reasons. Like, I agree that the boards are trash, but I think Greedy’s Goomba Gala is my favorite among this trash bag. Is it good compared to actual good boards? No, but I’ll take paying off a Goomba to let me go where I want over slipping on a banana or the teacups from hell any day lol Also, you seem to not like the idea of some minigames having previous mechanics, but I don’t mind it. Also, I think Paths of Peril and Trace Race are great. Are they similar? Sure, but they both feel different enough to me.
My complaint about minigames isn’t that old ideas get reused (although I mentioned it with Hide or Go Boom since I think the concept is too uninteresting to revisit), but for how few minigames 4 has, too many play the same. Paths of Peril is fine on it’s own, but when put in the same compilation as Trace Race, to me it’s a wasted slot. Like all of the 2v2 games feel unique from each other and I would’ve enjoyed that diversity in the free for all games too.
@@HiJello64 See, if it’s fun, I don’t really mind it. Like, I will say I hate when games have more than one button mashing mini-game, but I also hate button mashers. But like, I love survival mini-games where the goal is to be the last one standing, and Mario Party has a huge variation of that type of minigame. Like, I don’t mind Mario Party 2 having bombs away, lava tile isle, hexagon heat, and other games like it where you’re in a small, concentrated area trying not to fall off. They’re all similar, but fun and are a little unique. I would say the same applies to trace race and paths of peril. Are they similar? Sure, but they’re fun and still different enough. I agree with you on the button mashers though. Although, I like slimetime more than domination because it’s hilarious when someone loses endurance or thinks they won when they haven’t and get slingshot back to the beginning lol
I wouldn't say it's Hot Garbage, but I do agree that Mario Party 4 is the most overrated Mario Party of All Time. Not only are the boards really dull but the incredibly slow pace of this game killed it for me. Add on way too many board hazards, extremely long and unskippable cutscenes, and I really disliked the Mini and Mega Mushroom system. However you could argue that because 2001 and 2002 was a transitional period from the N64 to the GameCube so you could say that they just didn't know how to do the boards yet. Although Mario Party 4 does have the best selection of Mini Games in the series, Mini Games alone can only get you so far, that's why Island Tour isn't fondly remembered. I still have Mario Party 4 in my Top 10 Mario Party's ever though but it's definitely the weakest of the GameCube era.
How tf Manta Rings is the baby version of Avalanche, when they are completely different? One is a survival game and the other is a point-based game? If you say its because of button mashing, thats wrong because you don't even need to button mash in Manta Rings. That has to be a Bullshit throwaway line just to emphasize that you dislike minigames.
As someone who has never played nor will ever desire to play Mario Party 4, I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU HATE MARIO PARTY 4. UNSUBBED, RATIOED, ARRESTED, IMPRISONED, SUED, RATIOED AGAIN, AND CANCELED!
I always found it weird that this is the ONLY Mario Party game to have fully-produced FMV cutscenes
Bro literally liked majority of the minigames 💀 so how is it the worst
Bro this game minigames has like one of the fewest amount of minigames in the franchise and there's still the fact that most of the boards suck💀

I’ve hardly dabbled with any game’s 2v2 modes, but your explanation of item play makes it sound pretty interesting with the right people.
It's definitely flawed but I'd still say it's much better than 5 at least.
I want to like Toad's Midday Madness, the music is nostalgically good, but the board is not.

The comment about the commercial reminded me of how Ratchet and Clank's Size Matters commercial had better jokes than all the jokes in the game.
Still my favourite MP to this day
I also love 5 since it is more classic Mario Party formula. Not much with gimmicks like it started in MP6. Also Board Party is so fun in MP5
My favorite Mario Party is Mario Party 7, but Mario Party 6 is a close second.
I’ve found that Gnarly Party, Haunted Bash and Seaside Soiree are near unplayable for me, but I’ve had fun with friends on the others
Mario party 4 is B tier honestly.
I never fell off this game, I still think it’s very good with a few big yikes mixed in there like Boo’s map

I dunno why everyone is obsessed with Booksquirm 😭
I think it comes down to it being really replayable.
IKR
I went 4, 6, 7 and then 5… I guess I did it all wrong 😂
I went from 7, 6, 4 and 5 lol

Mashing puts you ahead of your opponents. You don’t have to mash but you will lose otherwise.
I agree the minigames are not that good
YESSSSS IT IS. THANK YOU!!!!!!
No. This is the last great Mario Party.
