I was primed and ready to binge an entire Mario party retrospective and now I’m learning that this is the last one he’s made… this is exactly what it feels like to find a new favorite show to realize that it got canceled abruptly.
His first was 4 years ago. Averages out about 1 for each year. Perhaps another is on the horizon?

At this rate hopefully the next video after Kingdom Hearts 3 is Mario Party 5 (would keep with the "new MP video every 20 or so months pace" the pandemic handed him) but if it's not then it is what it is. This was always my favorite series on the channel and to see it come to a halt is unfortunate, but hey he's got other games to talk about. Least we can enjoy those videos.
Yeah, I wouldn't hold my breath for a Mario Party 5 followup sometime in the near future, since I understand that KingK would rather focus on other personal projects. If he did officially cancel this series, well, that's his decision and I respect that.

This is my favorite Mario Party but it's nice to hear another perspective from you as always!
Finally someone brings up how boring the boards look in mario party 4, how they go from actual themes to the ground copy and pasted is beyond me
And yet it's somehow your favourite GameCube instalment.
This is an extremely common complaint with this game, maybe even the most common one. Not sure why this is a new take.

Very nostalgic since this was my introduction to Mario Party, but it hasn't held up well. Everytime I replay it, it just makes me want to go back to 3.

You pretty much echo my feelings on this game.
However, you missed one of the things that hurt this game: It's so unbelievably SLOW. You probably didn't notice this thanks to the netplay speeding it up, but every animation takes forever to get through. And there's SO MANY ANIMATIONS.
Also, glad to see you came around on Mario Party 3. My personal favourite :)
Mario party 3 was my favorite too and mario party 4 was really really slow was hard to play after coming from 3 when they moved so fast

If you thought Mario Party 4 was really slow, then trust me, putting up with that awful pacing in 50Hz PAL was painful. It's so frustrating going from the fastest game in the series to the slowest, as if the series was going backwards.
Y’know, I’ve noticed a pattern throughout the entire Mario party series. During the N64 era, each game got better and better with more and more content and improvements implemented. But when they switched to the GameCube, it’s like they went back to square one with less minigames and blander boards. Then when the wii games came out (9 and 10 specifically), it was an entirely new formula! It seems that every time they jump to a new console, they abandon almost everything from the previous games and start fresh. It’s kinda weird now that I think about it.
well after mp4, the series did get a little better again.
I think it's that they get more complex, and that's because the first one gets the new people who just got the console and as fans adapt to the console, it gets different/more complex. Def was that was fo N64 and GameCube, I think it was for Wii as well, with 8 which was basic and kinda boring imo and abused Wii waggle. 9 wasn't that good but it was a change up. It all kinda stopped with the Wii u and then Switch as well though.
This game has been in my mind for a while due to it being played at the recent Smash Summit 11, where the commentators said it was the best Mario Party. I was confused, I had briefly played a few games of every Mario Party and didn’t find 4 too remarkable.
From what I gathered from their session, the appeal for this one comes from it’s mini games. Theres a lot of bangers.
The mini games are great, but 70% of the time is spent on the boards. That 70% makes the 30% not worth it.
Minigames are the real content to us melee players. Lol
I keep coming back and rewatching this series every few months in hopes that i can will the next one into existence
Mario Party 4 was always my favorite, seeing all my favorite mini games again in this video was such a nostalgia rush. I loved booksquirm, avalanche, and cheep cheep sweep so much. That dungeons duo one was so hard though. And right oar left too. I think 4 might be the only Mario Party where I remember all of the mini games.
I remember not liking Mario Party 5 at all. My sister and I barely played it. We liked 6 and 7 though. But we played 4 the most by far.
I always felt like 4 was a walk-back in the progression of the series. Although it was the first next-gen Mario Party at the time, it was pretty amazing how it was done in the time since Mario Party 3's release the year prior.

YESSSS I've been waiting for this for so long, but I think mario party 4's boards absolutely suck, you're just stuck in loops for a very long time and items suck. However, I will say that the minigames are very VERY good, that's just me though.
Agreed. Very poor selection of boards but the minigames are generally fantastic. The number of minigames is rather small but I think the overall quality makes up for it.

the items don’t suck and the boards do have some cool surprises. And the loops can be said in most boards in the series. Besides 9 and 10 thanks to the car gimmic.

This made me appreciate Mario Party 5 a little more. They went back to make the whole area an interactive board.
The boards suck in 5, seriously they're just circles and 5 has the worst item system easily. They're random items and then you have to pay to use them, how lame is that? And the minigames are no where near as good, 4 is definitely overrated but 5 is the worst classic one.

So the gimmick behind Koopa's Seaside Soiree is that you pass spaces to give Koopa coins, and when you land on the happenings around the middle you're FORCED to pay for a stay and it gets destroyed? So you pay to pass it AND pay to land on it? That's just a shittier bank. How is that fun...?
Mario Party 4 can be resumed as "the one where you get stuck in a loop A LOT". And this is why Board design is the most crucial aspect in Mario Party.

KingK I want to thank you for introducing me to the Mario Party discord that you brought up at the start of the video. Playing these Mario Party games that would otherwise be offline, online using dolphin with mods and stuff is a straight up blast. I seriously recommend trying this to anyone looking for a great Saturday night full of laughs and raging Mario party games. and it plays better than Nintendos official servers so... win, win.

This was my favourite Mario Party game. I have a hard time figuring out why.
I think it's the most charming for me. I love the atmosphere it brings, I remember as a child looking at the background elements and feeling like I wanted to explore those places. A lot of the minigame locations look like they have a creative world going for them too.
One aspect that I definitely think is underrated about this game is the soundtrack. The soundtrack is amazing! Very whimsical, emotional and entertaining! For me it's a classic and I can only hope that since this game is becoming old enough to be nostalgic, more people can appreciate it

I have fond memories of this game. My boyfriend and I played all the games in the series and when we traded our N64 for a GameCube, this was the only Mario Party we had for a long time. We had so much fun with our 50-turn plays. I would happily play a round with you in memory of my late, great sweetheart, KingK!
This was the only Mario party I had as a kid. Even back then, I didn’t like it compared to the older ones that my cousin had on his n64

8 for me.
The biggest issue with 7 is pace. Even a 20 turn game can take forever, but everything else makes it a lot of fun.
@Mary Moon MP7 and Mario party DS are goated man. Such charm such good mini games. Boards are exceptional (Ds one had some okay boards)
@Mary Moon I didn't grow up with Mario Party but I say Mario Party 6 is the one I always play with friends.

Finally! It's been nearly 2 years for this one. Although, this is among my least favorite Mario Party games. The 3rd is my favorite.
4 was my introduction to Mario Party. Looking back though, I wish it had been 3. After playing Mario Party 3 and having a blast, Mario Party 4 felt like a stale and thoroughly unenjoyable follow-up.
At least the following GameCube games are better. I still like 5 after all these years.

5 was my second Mario Party game. Afterwards, I accidentally skipped a couple of entries until I got 8 and DS. I vividly remember liking 5 more than 4 growing up, and it's easy to see why. I wish I had 6 and 7 though, they're superb.

OH GOD the level of hype I had when I saw a new Chance Time
I think Toad's board would have been much better if the first teacup junction was abit further away and the ability to ignore the teacups with a mega mushroom or something. MP4 has a special place in my heart cause I played it so much as a kid. The music is very nostalgic. But playing it now n days, I usually show it to friends once for the fun mini games but thats about it. Another great video KingK, can't wait for Mario party 5 and 6.

I'm glad Bob-omb Breakers gets the love it deserves. Beach Volley Folly could've been mentioned specifically, too, with it leading off the string of fun bonus minigames about sports and with it being the only one of this group to have a mini-campaign.

I spent an entire summer back in the day playing this on gamecube to entertain some out of state relatives. Even then, I've never seen that Bowser dart game before. Crazy.
Also, thanks KingK for introducing me to the Giant Bomb streams way back in the first Chance Time video. I've enjoyed many, many hours having those on in the background.

Loved MP4. Was my first official Mario Party game on my own system I played.
A little anecdote, when I was little I loved the N64 trilogy, especially their items. I loved the wild 'n' wacky selection of items from Mario Party 3 so much, I used to sculpt them from clay!
Then I bought Mario Party 4. My day was ruined, and my disappointment was immeasurable.

Really, it's a shocker to me how this one is heralded as one of the best Mario Party games in the series. I find it to be dull and worth skipping for all of the reasons you stated. And I was always surprised to find out that my 2 favorites, 5 and 7, are some of the more controversial of the series.
If I had to make a top 5 list:
1. Mario Party 7
2. Mario Party 5
3. Mario Party 6
4. Mario Party DS
5. Mario Party 3
I get that 6 is the better game that 5, but I have a huge place in my heart for 5.

I think most big Mario Party fans who don't let nostalgia play a big role in deciding their favorites will tell you MP4 is one of the weakest HudsonSoft-era entries.

To fix mini-mushroom, just have it work like a skeleton key. If you have one and move past a place with a small pathway, you can choose to use it there.

I respect everyone's opinion, but I just have to say that MP4 is probably the game in the series I've played the most, especially with friends. It's not my favorite -- that would be MP6 -- but my best friendship memories are from 4.
