    Matt & Craig's response to Mystery Men surprises and outrages me!
    As a comedy film and superhero parody I think MM holds its own incredibly well. It's a terrific ensemble of comedians (and non-comedians, who still manage to keep up with their co-stars). I understand being turned off by Paul Reuben's constant fart humor (though I would argue the comedy comes more from his uncanny character work), and I know not everyone is the biggest Ben Stiller fan.
    But to me the unique directing, cinematography, and detailed world-building alone make put this above most comedy films of its time. Maybe it's just my fancy pair of rose-colored glasses, but Mystery Men reminds me of a time when an interesting and weird comedy film with a distinct voice and style could still get big.
    Oh, and Old Yeller is good too.

      I agree with you, but my problem with Mystery Men is that it just kind of falls short of being truly awesome. If I recall to the first time I watched MM, I thought it was decent, and pretty funny, but wished it was better. There's so much there that is good and funny, and quotable-- but it just doesn't deliver for me. Most of the fondness I have for the movie is on repeated viewings, where I forgive its bad parts because I really enjoy the world and the characters and the quirkiness, but if I am honest with myself, the movie is just ok for me.

      I think the problem with calling the direction and world-building, at least in terms of the actual set design and location, is that it is pretty evocative of the Schumacher Batman films.

    Never saw the movie but I did read the book, although I actually read the sequel first without knowing it was a sequel haha. I didn't understand the concept of the old west at the time and thought it all took place in present day and was afraid of going to farms in case indians came and kidnapped me. I wasn't the smartest kid.

    Seen It:
    I don't know if anyone else has asked before, but have either of you seen any of the works of Stephen Chow? He's a producer, director, actor, and martial arts enthusiast originally from Hong Kong. A few of his works have broken Chinese box office records.
    My college friends and I love the ridiculousness of his comedy along with his obvious passion for martial arts and are trying to watch every film he's taken part in. His early works are very rough and hard to follow (partially due to the language gap), but after the "Putney Swope Panic" subsides and we let the rest wash over, we end up enjoying it.
    Our favorites have been: The God of Cookery, Shaolin Soccer, King of Comedy, and Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons. I highly suggest him for one of your foreign film months! :)

    I'd like Craig to expand on how he thinks Gran Torino glorifies racism. If he didn't like it that's totally fair, some of the acting is quite poor, I'd agree, but I think he's conflating racist characters with a racist movie.
    Racism is a big part of the movie, Eastwood's character is certainly a racist, and I don't know if I'd even say he's not a racist by the end of the film, but I don't think that should preclude him from being a sympathetic character and I don't think it makes the film racist. We can agree that he's wrong and he's flawed, but every good character is flawed, a lot of beloved characters in fiction and in the real world are wrong and flawed and we love them anyway. It doesn't need to be said how MLK was a great man, but he cheated on his wife, that's disgusting, it's reprehensible, but it's just one part of him, he's a human so he made mistakes and he was wrong, like everybody.
    Maybe there's something I'm forgetting, I haven't seen the movie in years, but from what I remember it's pretty evenhanded, nobody that we spend enough time with is wholly good or wholly bad, just like people.

    • @trdi
      @trdi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree with pretty much everything you said. And the main actor is portrayed as an anti hero. I'm not sure I understand the point completely, does this mean that we can't like any movie where something reprehensible happens? I am pretty sure I can find something comparable on anybody's fav movie list.

    • @katawatenshu
      @katawatenshu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      When Craig says "it glorifies a certain kind of old fashioned racism" I can only imagine he's referring to when the old guy is teaching the kid how to make ethnic jokes, good natured ones that the joker and jokee are both in on, and that's a sad thing to condemn a film on given that this is by all appearances a channel of comedians.
      I have no idea what he means about old fashioned sexism.

    • @blamesocietyfilms
      @blamesocietyfilms  6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I (Matt) acknowledge that I may have had somewhat of a knee-jerk reaction to a racist old coot. It happens. But whether it is or not, racism is the least of this film's worries. The biggest is that it's not very good.

    • @NinjaDimes
      @NinjaDimes 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well, it's not acted that well because Eastwood wanted to be authentic about the Hmong people he cast, who were all amateurs-- so I can kinda forgive it for poor acting somewhat. That said, it does suffer from poor direction at times, such as when things need to be explained such as the mirror scene. I disagree with Matt and Craig about racism being glorified (in the same way I disagree with people who say GoT glorifies rape) as showing something isn't glorifying it. You're supposed to have an uncomfortable, visceral reaction to his racism, and not really like the guy, and in that way it delivers. I haven't watched it in forever, and I kinda liked it, but in hindsight, I felt it was pretty tropey and cheap in terms of the story it's trying to tell.

    I saw a really great French comedy a few years back called The Fairy (La fée, 2011), directed, written, and starred in by Dominique Abel and Fiona Gordon. It is bizarre, but so cute and SO visually pleasing. It has some Tati-esque elements, but I thought it was really fresh and fun, and if you haven't seen it I recommend it!
    Random side note: I went to high school with Bee Vang, the "main Hmong" in Gran Torino. He was a pretty chill dude, though I had never seen him act before that to be honest. It gave him some amount of notoriety in our senior year.

    The *other* movie with the plot of "Boy Meets Dog, Boys Falls in Love with Dog, Dog Protects Boy from Harm, and then the Dog Dies at the End" is 1974's "Where the Red Fern Grows," with James Whitmore, noted TV actress Beverly Garland, and Jack Ging. The double-barrel blow to a child's tear ducts in this movie is that there are two dogs: one dies protecting the boy, and the other, unable to bear the loss of his companion, dies from grief. In the never-ending debate between cat lovers and dog lovers, "Red Fern" proves that dogs -- in movies, at least -- are far better equipped than cats to teach young people the hard facts of life.

    If anybody is going to read it after three years, I have something to say about Gran Torino [some spoilers!] I don't think we're supposed to forgive the racism because "he's got a good heart". Yes, his behavior is reprehensible, so when he looks at himself in the mirror he realizes not what he misses (as he did in the dining room), but what he is. And that is the real epiphany. He begins to understand that a change in attitude alone will not be enough. So what he does at the very end shows that he's really transformed and I think it's a really good character arc. As to the acting, it always seemed alright to me, but then again I'm Polish (like living in Poland Polish, not as Clint in this movie), so maybe I miss some nuances.

    Mat kind of looks like Nelson from Flatliners, the one from the 90's not the modern remake.

    Louis De Funes comedies are pretty accessible. Usually not high brow either.

    Les Visiteurs is a great goofball French comedy! The Bill and Ted of France, give it a try, not pretentious.

    My favorite French comedy is 1953's The Wages of Fear... where four desperate men trapped in South America take a dangerous job transporting nitroglycerine in hopes of earning their way out of the hell they've become stuck in. Hi-jinx ensue... The French have a hilarious sense of humor about risking everything to terminate your own misery. Will the four outcasts manage to end their suffering? ....
    SPOILERS.... Yep!
