I popped on “Zulu” a few days ago and my nieces (preteens) said, “I thought you said this was an action/adventure movie? Everyone just stands around and shouts British stuff!”
There has never been a show on TH-cam that I have followed with such dedication. Don't get me wrong, I love Beer and Board Games, but the thought and effort that goes into this show deserves recognition. This is, by far, the greatest show that has ever graced TH-cam. I have watched every episode countless times. Ebert would give you all two thumbs up, and probably a thumb kiss. I raise my glass to you, Matt, Craig, and Tona. Cheers. May the film forever roll...
Matt: "Where there's a whip..." Me: "We don't wanna go to war today, but the lord of the lashes says nay nay nay! *coughs and looks around* I didn't do that..."
Oh my god! Where there's a whip there's a way... They know! That bit. I laughed out loud so hard and clapped my hands in the air like a moron. Like involuntarily. That's how funny that moment was to me... because I knew. I was in on the joke. Oh that felt so goood.
23:34 AHHHH! That's me!! Love you guys and I'm so happy I'm finally able to help to contribute to the show! Keep doing what you're doing and I'll be watching as always:-)
Daniel Holm I love that movie! A forgotten and underrated comedy. Keaton, Lloyd, and Peter Boyle are hilarious. I’m probably the only person who can quote that movie start to finish I’ve seen it so many times
(Drinking wine) “This is the body and blood Jesus Christ... and a damn fine Beaujolais” hah I want to quote that every time I have a glass of wine but nobody gets the reference
I’m delighted that “That Thing You Do” got some love on this episode. It seemed like it was always on cable when I came home from college for visits and it my family and I always enjoyed watching it together. Tom Everett Scott’s laugh upon hearing Giovanni Ribisi’s character broke his arm is just so good. And, of course, Steve Zahn is fantastic.
Hi lads, just a word on David Farrar (xerxes), he was quite a big star in Britain (in the 40's especially), most famous for the lead role in Powell and Pressburger's 'Black Narcisscus'. Love the show, good stuff. Best Wishes. :)
We been subscribers for quite some time, but never got around to sitting and watching in full length. You guys are great. Got a weekend of catching up to do!
I saw Donnie Darko sometime around 2006. I thought it was alright, but I haven't seen it since, and I can't remember a single thing from the movie. Maybe I should rewatch it, since people seem to love it, but I just can't bring myself to care enough.
Now, for next week, I really want Craig to trick Matt by pulling Salo and then pull out the actual movie they're going to watch. Just want to see Matt's reaction towards it.
Seen It: Catch Me If You Can. One of my favorite films of all time. Tom Hanks, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Christopher Walken all give amazing performances. The script is airtight, and it's not a minute too long or too short.
You have to watch the Director's Cut of Donnie Darko guys! There's such a difference between the American theatrical release and the European theatrical (Director's Cut in America), I think it merits a rewatch, just to see what we missed here. I like how it plays out more and that it doesn't leave you scratching your head. I wish there were a better way to convey things than reading segments though. That is it's main detractor, but what's a little reading during a movie on occasion, right? Haha
If you want to see David Farrar's most notable role (at least for me), check out "Black Narcissus". He certainly sports some leg in that one thanks to his rather short-shorts.
You're quite right about spectacle and the differences between the '60s notions of epic and action, and those of our own time. I remember being bored with much of "Spartacus," for example, which was a great disappointment to my teenaged self.
I know mostly the World Without Sunday's cover for The Ringers documentary, but I got the ref even if I never watched return of the king by Bass & Rankin
Strangely enough, I am commenting on this video to ask what the name of the music was in the intro to the first episode of fun rangers. Keep up the good work, and I recommend watching primer on this show.
Ever seen The Postman, with Kevin Costner and Will Patton? I think it’s extremely underrated. The writing is great, the acting is stupendous, and the post-apocalyptic setting is done very well.
No, guys. You NEED to go back and watch Donnie Darko again... and again... and again. Get the director's cut. Watch it again. Watch it with the commentary if you must. EXPLORE THAT MOVIE. Pay attention to the dad. Consider the worthiness of [Swayze's] self-help approach. Ponder the nature of Frank. Being a fellow child of the 80s, I'm sure you also recognize how well Donnie Darko captured teenage angst in those days, and as I've watched it countless times over the years, I can confirm that it still holds up and there's always more to explore.
I think the original King Kong is an example as to why The 300 Spartans does not get a pass when it comes to its action scenes. Good action scenes existed all the way back in the 1930s
If you rewatch Donnie Darko don't wat h the director's cut. The additional material makes the film look like you accidentally went back to the DVD menu and definitely states what actually happened. The original version doesn't need it anymore than star wars needed additional material. Sometimes directors should get their way and sometimes they shouldn't.
G'day guys. Have you seen the Australian film "Watch The Shadows Dance"? It has a certain BMX bandit in the movie that might raise an eyebrow or two...
I think something that makes 300 special is that it doesn't try to be true to history, it tries to be true to the graphic novel. The blood, the macho, almost ridiculous outfits, they're all straight from a comic book, virtually unaltered and unmodified to make it more appealing to the average movie goer. It's a comic book with actors and music and moving images, which doesn't make it one of a kind but one of a very special few.
Have either of you seen Shock Treatment, the not-so-sequel to Rocky Horror? The director refers to it as "an abortion of a film" and it would be your 2nd Jessica Harper movie
Also been meaning to rewatch Donnie Darko because I've only ever seen the director's cut which was completely botched. The opening sequence replaces The Killing Moon with Never Tear Us Apart by INXS and if that's not bad enough there's a bunch of added scenes that purposefully ruin the story's ambiguity Don't watch the director's cut unless you want to be disappointed
Why the hell is Themistocles at Thermopylae!? Should be pretty busy right about then! But I guess the Artemisium Straight doesn't need defending. Just leave that wide the hell open and make this battle utterly pointless!
"Tell me you mother was a Greek." She was... as was her dad... as was she. She was the queen of Halicarnassus. Why do people keep thinking Artemisia was Persian? She was just a Greek ruler who took the deal and threw in with the Persians. A lot of them did that, the majority of the Boeotian League did that. But I guess that undercuts the "Free and united Greece" BS this movie likes to push.
No one ever mentions how, in the second invasion of the Persian army in Greece, the Spartans helped the Persians. Or how Persia was one of a few nations at the time that banned slavery within its borders, whereas the greeks loved that shit.
Worst movie to decorate your extra room: Cube.
Room
PRIME NUMBERS
clockwork orange
At best a wonnky colorful room, at worst a gruesome death trap. Of course, if you have lots of enemies, it could be a useful way to get rid of them...
I loved it when Xerxes told Jude Law all about his time as a bellhop at the Grand Budapest.
WE DON'T WANT TO GO TO WAR TODAY BUT THE LORD OF THE LASH SAYS NAY, NAY, NAY! WE'RE GONNA MARCH ALL DAY ALL DAY!
I knew I knew it I just couldn't place it! I couldn't imagine the freakish little orcs marching through the hills before reading this.
This made me laugh... especially when he says oh they know they know lol
WHERE THERE'S A WHIP
*WAPSHHH*
THERE'S A WAY
WHERE THERE'S A WHIP
*WAPSHHH*
THERE'S A WAY
I popped on “Zulu” a few days ago and my nieces (preteens) said, “I thought you said this was an action/adventure movie? Everyone just stands around and shouts British stuff!”
Zulu is a good movie, and you get Michael Caine
Zulu was Michael caines first movie
There has never been a show on TH-cam that I have followed with such dedication. 10:56 "that's my breathing lung!" made me laugh out loud!
Welcome to the basement is one of the best film series on TH-cam. Glad to see a new video!
Craig, killing it in this one! Thanks fellas, you're the greatest.
Salo: A Star Wars Story... ;)
Every episode is great. These are criminally underrated! I recommend them to anyone who loves film.
23:34 AHHHH! That's me!! Love you guys and I'm so happy I'm finally able to help to contribute to the show! Keep doing what you're doing and I'll be watching as always:-)
Seen it: the dream team, from 1989? An amazing comedy I’ve never heard anyone talk about!
Love from Sweden since season 1
Daniel Holm I love that movie! A forgotten and underrated comedy. Keaton, Lloyd, and Peter Boyle are hilarious. I’m probably the only person who can quote that movie start to finish I’ve seen it so many times
(Drinking wine) “This is the body and blood Jesus Christ... and a damn fine Beaujolais” hah I want to quote that every time I have a glass of wine but nobody gets the reference
FootballJunkie my favorite is
”- all of god's creatures are beautiful.
- yeah but not her.
- no, not her.”
I’m delighted that “That Thing You Do” got some love on this episode. It seemed like it was always on cable when I came home from college for visits and it my family and I always enjoyed watching it together. Me over here like "no Craig dont start smoking again"
Matt's disappointment in his "place in France" riff.... priceless.
I'm sure you're aware that I'm a big huge fan of the show. So take the following earnestly:
Funniest Craig episode ever. :)
He did get off some good ones.
I like this show esp for the snarky comments. I may or may not like the flick..but the comments are priceless. awwww little Ernesto..miss him.
Hi lads, just a word on David Farrar (xerxes), he was quite a big star in Britain (in the 40's especially), most famous for the lead role in Powell and Pressburger's 'Black Narcisscus'. Love the show, good stuff. Best Wishes. :)

Funniest episode in years!!! Keep it up!
I saw Donnie Darko sometime around 2006. I thought it was alright, but I haven't seen it since, and I can't remember a single thing from the movie. Maybe I should rewatch it, since people seem to love it, but I just can't bring myself to care enough.
I need to give it a rewatch myself. Don't bother with the sequel.
Fleshy
50 Shades Darko?
Now, for next week, I really want Craig to trick Matt by pulling Salo and then pull out the actual movie they're going to watch. Just want to see Matt's reaction towards it.
Have you guys seen Hereditary yet? I'm not really a horror guy but i absolutely loved it, Toni Collette is brilliant in it, maybe even oscar worthy.
9:23 - Here you go Matt ;] - "There's a place in Sparta where the ladies are starkas!"
I don’t think there’s anything in this episode that I appreciate more than the fact that Matt and Craig are randomly matching shirts.
Damn, nice Dire Straits album in the back, Sloan!
Awesome! You guys ever seen Captain Ron? One of my favorites!
He absolutely looks like F. Murray Abraham!!!
Y'all should do a month of second chances.
The F. Murray Abraham jokes had me *rolling*. He totally does look like him!
As a side note, he also looks like Kevin Kline as Cyrano.
“What’s a machine?”- best one from this one goes to Craig.
Donnie Darko holds up well over time. Gift yourself with another viewing!!
Salo confirmed for next episode!
Seen It: Catch Me If You Can. One of my favorite films of all time. Tom Hanks, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Christopher Walken all give amazing performances. The script is airtight, and it's not a minute too long or too short.
WE DON'T WANNA GO TO WAR TODAY!
BUT THE LORD OF THE LASH SAYS "NAY, NAY, NAAAYYY!!!"
procrastinator99 "WE'RE GONNA FIGHT ALL DAY, ALL DAY, ALL DAY!"
The room I'd decorate as would be Doc Brown's living room!
I've watched Donnie Darko five or six times over the years. I think it holds up.
That thing you do... written by one of my favorite bands... Fountains of wayne.
Wait a minute, Rankin and Bass Lord of the Rings series... Craig... Seen it?
Great album in the background
"That's my breathing lung!"
The attic with round window in the Crow
I feel like Brian Cox based his performance in Troy after Farrar as Xerxes.
Thank goodness you like "The Hudsucker Proxy," Matt---but, Craig, you're killing me!
you know....for kids...
If you want to see David Farrar's most notable role (at least for me), check out "Black Narcissus". He certainly sports some leg in that one thanks to his rather short-shorts.
I use candy dishes for cigar ashtrays.
Fellas!!! Have you seen LA Confidential? Saw it recently for the first time, loved it, watched it again then next night!
Johnson looks like Mark Ruffalo in this episode.
I can't complain about anyone saying that.
Anyone else have to watch this for History class? I remember having this shown to me in 7th grade.
Have you guys ever seen The Great Race from 1965 by Blake Edwars?? Its one of my favorites!
You're quite right about spectacle and the differences between the '60s notions of epic and action, and those of our own time. I remember being bored with much of "Spartacus," for example, which was a great disappointment to my teenaged self.
@4:01 'The Hobbit' Rankin-Bass animated version.
It's the Return of the King not the Hobbit.
I know mostly the World Without Sunday's cover for The Ringers documentary, but I got the ref even if I never watched return of the king by Bass & Rankin
9:17 Peter Ustinov in Logan's Run
@6:12 and enter
Leonidas really takes his D&D seriously.
Matt, I do!
That name was so producer-y, I barely resisted the urge to tie a sweater around my neck.
Now you have to pick Salo.
we will watch from the basement. and toast Courtney!
No, guys. You NEED to go back and watch Donnie Darko again... and again... and again. Get the director's cut. Watch it again. Watch it with the commentary if you must. EXPLORE THAT MOVIE. He looks more like Vincent Price than F. Murray Abraham
I see that too
I think the original King Kong is an example as to why The 300 Spartans does not get a pass when it comes to its action scenes. Good action scenes existed all the way back in the 1930s
Please watch The Devil's Brigade.
Love you all.
Lawrence Naismith is great. I'd love it if you guys would watch The Amazing Mr Blunden.
Have you seen Folks!. I want to see it again but I can't find it.
Did you guys coordinate your outfits? I hope you know we only wear pink on Wednesdays
What do you guys think about the Oscar changes?
If you rewatch Donnie Darko don't wat h the director's cut. The additional material makes the film look like you accidentally went back to the DVD menu and definitely states what actually happened. Seen sweet country, pretty good Australian western
Chop death is always a tough way to go.
Definitely see Donnie Darko again.
How has Craig not seen Rankin Bass’ The Hobbit/Return of the King?
The band in Almost Famous is based on the Allman Brothers. Would that make a difference, Matt?
Go Green!!
How the hell was that a narrow mountain pass
G'day guys. Have you seen the Australian film "Watch The Shadows Dance"? It has a certain BMX bandit in the movie that might raise an eyebrow or two...

"Poopsmear!"
New show? Seen it agian?
Of course I would buid the set of the Merv Griffin show in my apartment, a la Seinfeld.

Don't watch the director's cut unless you want to be disappointed
Matt's right! He does look like him!
I'm sure Matt has heard of the rule of 3.
wait is Donnie Darko a period piece
Makes me think of how much Clueless is a period piece.
What's a machine? LOL
Seen it? Madame Satan, a pre-Hayes code sexy musical by Cecil DeMille with Zeppelins. Seriously.
You g guys fucking rock, and I know that. :)
He looks like F Murray Abraham.
A crack on the back says we are going to fight, we’re going to fight all day all night and morn.
IMDB lists the use of the word "machine" as incorrectly regarded goof. I guess it's a very old word.
Why the hell is Themistocles at Thermopylae!? Should be pretty busy right about then! But I guess the Artemisium Straight doesn't need defending. Just leave that wide the hell open and make this battle utterly pointless!
Even though there are VHS tapes in your intro I don't remember you ever watching one. I think it's time to fix that.
"Tell me you mother was a Greek."
She was... as was her dad... as was she. She was the queen of Halicarnassus. Why do people keep thinking Artemisia was Persian? She was just a Greek ruler who took the deal and threw in with the Persians. A lot of them did that, the majority of the Boeotian League did that. Why did Matt choose a Dire Straits... ohhhhhhhhhhh.
No one ever mentions how, in the second invasion of the Persian army in Greece, the Spartans helped the Persians. Or how Persia was one of a few nations at the time that banned slavery within its borders, whereas the greeks loved that shit.
