    I got the Derale Atomic Cool as part of my XJ overheating problem attack plan (along with new rad, fan and shrouds). I also installed a trans temperature gauge and noticed the transmission heats up more than the engine under some conditions, so I’m very glad I got the trans cooler. It makes sense since youre spinning the wheels etc. During the install I discovered the stock trans cooler was clogged, along with lots of bent and kinked trans lines. Night and day for me, all my heating issues were solved.

    • @2AOverland
      @2AOverland  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Overheating attack plan I love it! I think an external transmission cooler is a must on the XJ’s especially one with a fan. A clogged and destroyed stock trans cooler can definitely cause some overheating issues with the transmission. The better fluid and airflow the better 😎 thanks for watching

    Nice! I definitely wanted to do this before I ended up doing a manual swap on my XJ.
    I’d say a bit of advice would be to look into a thermostatic control for it. That way you never have to worry about turning the fan on or off, cause while it may not be near as bad, over cooling isn’t good for an auto.
    Before I manual swapped, I bought a thermostatic control from American volt. The AW4 operating range is 125°-175°, and I got a thermostatic switch that would turn on at 150° and turn off at 135°. That way it’s always keeping it in range. The kit comes with the hose barbs too so it’s incredibly easy to do. The solenoid control would just be *before* the cooler and you’d have a solenoid signal wired up to it. Such as battery positive to the switch, then the switch to the solenoid. And then maybe your ground runs through the solenoid. And it’ll turn on the fan on and off as you see fit, and you could even have a manual override too. Just an idea if you’re interested in having an “out of sight, out of mind” approach. I like to drive hard in the sand, so a cooler was a big priority while I still had the auto
    Great video! I loved watching. Glad to see there’s videos that aren’t just using the average cooler, and now showing fan cooled ones too

      @2AOverland  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s brilliant!!! Thanks for the info man! I want it to be as painless as possible so I already have that kit in my shopping cart 😂 I’ll figure it out how to wire it up so it’s automatic and I can use the switch.
      Thank you so much for watching! I’m trying to be more outside the box and do budget minded but high quality upgrades to the jeep that I know people would want to watch

      @@2AOverland you got it! I think that would make it so you can just forget about it and not have to worry about it.
      My hunch is that you’ll need to split the ground lead from both fans into two separate leads. You keep the lead you already have connected to the auxbeam and that allows manual control. On the other lead you get a solenoid rated for the current it’ll draw (I believe you said 10A?). Run your secondary lead from the grounds into the solenoid, then from the solenoid to battery negative or just grounded to the body somewhere. Then you just wire from battery positive (or ideally ignition 12v that way it doesn’t run down the batteries on a warm shut down, but I can’t imagine a problem), to the thermostatic switch, then from the thermostatic switch to the relay. I believe there’s a signal ground needed too, so I think in that case you’d just splice your signal ground into any of your ground wires for the fan. But don’t quote me on that part.
      For the thermostatic switch, you’ll want to make sure you get one that has the barbs sized for the inner diameter of the cooler lines. Should be pretty easy to make a few cuts and splice the switch in. Also, as I’m sure you could imagine, make sure you put the thermostatic switch in *before* the cooler (even the factory “cooler” too if you have it still). You want to see the temps right out of the transmission, not the temps before. It should be easy to figure out which is which. I get everything warmed up, then put the fan on at full tilt. And use a temp gauge to see the surface temps of the lines from the cooler. Whichever one is consistently hotter will be the line from the transmission.
      Also you could even set up your ground wires so it’s just one ground wire from the cooler to about 12” before the auxbeam and then do the split there. The current will be no different if you have it run through the whole ground line instead.
      For sure! I really enjoyed watching it! I know I’ve been watching your IRO 3 link video over and over lately. It’s really well done and it’s making me be sure I’m prepped for when I install mine.
      Best of luck!

    Why didn’t you add more weld? 4 small tacks when you could have put two 1 inch beads on the top edge.
    This is one of those mods that no one notices, but are critically important,.
    I don’t think you’re supposed to put Teflon tape on AN fittings..
    Job well done!!!

    • @2AOverland
      @2AOverland  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly there’s no reason why I didn’t add more 😅 you’re right I should of had a couple small beads instead of tacks but I think those tacks will hold and if they don’t I’m welding that whole damn thing in 😂.
      That’s exactly what I was thinking! An overheating trans will kill it so fast so I figured a beefy trans cooler will be more than enough and it’s an easy upgrade for anybody that wants to recreate it!
      I don’t think I was supposed to either but I made sure it was way away from the threads so there’s no chance of leaking 😬 as long as it doesn’t leak I’m happy lol

    • @jimmyvalhalla1939
      @jimmyvalhalla1939 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@2AOverland I had to build my own trans cooler since they quit making the behind the grill version for the TJ/LJ.
      Unfortunately I had to do it 3 times. The first version was too high. I didn’t notice but the hood latch hit the top of the cooler and made it leak after a couple weeks. I bought another cooler and modified the mount but over tightened one of the fittings and it split so it leaked all over the place. The third version has been great. I’m going from the transmission to the radiator, out of the radiator into the cooler, and out of the cooler, back to the transmission. In the summer it’s not ideal, but Texas winters can get very cold, so I needed to add heat to the transmission.
      On a side note: the thermal expansion rate of the transmission fluid is crazy high. 20* different radically changes the fluid level

    • @2AOverland

      Awh man that’s some bad luck! I thought about doing the same trans/rad/cooler method but I bought my cold case radiator from a local guy he lost the trans fittings so I figured I’ll just run an external trans cooler and save me time lol

    • @jethro9341
