Ford Explorer Gauges Flickering & Electrical Issues

  • This is a video of my possessed 04 Ford Explorer XLT 4x4 dealing with electrical issues. You can see that the gauges are flickering regardless of whether the car is on or off. The interior lights go on and off, the radio turns on and off, and so do all of the dashboard lights. I can drive like this and it will do the same thing, however every 5 minutes or so, everything goes back to normal for about 10-15 seconds, but then goes back to being possessed. I just got back from AutoZone and Altenator and Battery a perfect. Brand new battery with no change.
UPDATE: I fixed this issue by doing a couple of things. 1) having a Ford mechanic clear all of the codes. The dealership charged $89 to do this. 2) Fixed the blend door actuator as this was broken at the same time. It only stayed on cold and never went to hot cause the door gears on the actuator were broken. I fixed this myself using a tutorial on explorerforum.com. 3) replaced battery
    Hope this helps someone

I also had the same symptoms on my Ford Explorer. I had the battery checked and it was fine. I also cleaned both battery posts and the connectors. Same problem. I took it to an auto repair shop (it started at home with no problem). The mechanic had me pop the hood and try to start it. Luckily it didn't start so he could see the problem. He then had me try to start it again while he moved the positive and negative battery wires. When he shifted the positive wire it started with no problem. The problem was not where the positive wire connects to the battery post but where the positive wires are clamped onto the positive clamp itself (2 bolts hold these positive wires). I don't know if this clamp was changed out previously. Once he cleaned and re-clamped the wires the problem went away.

For anyone who might see this Video in 2024 - Check and or Make new "Engine to Frame and Frame to Chassis and Battery ground to Chassis" (Ground wires / Straps) grind file or wire brush the contact areas, i Had the same issue its fixed now

It can also be the cause of a parasitic draw

My mom's Explorer was doing this. It was a bad ground. The cable was corroded where it gets clamped into the battery terminal and wasn't making a good connection. I took it apart and cleaned it with a wire brush. After I got it put back together, the problem was gone and the car fired right up. If you're experiencing a problem like this, check your grounds. Wiggle wires to see if there is a change in behavior. I wiggled the negative battery cable and the door chime turned back on, so that's how I knew where to look.

Very similar to when I try to start my 05 Sport Trac and the engine "binds up" while cranking. All gauges do this, the Low Fuel indicator comes on, the trip odometer resets to 0. I turn off the key and open the door and the gauges stop jumping after about 5 seconds. Then I close the door and turn the key and it starts normally.... except that the fuel gauge takes forever to come up off empty and the Low Fuel indicator stays on until the gauge comes up a bit.
Still trying to figure it out. I suspect I may have a bad fuel injector that is flooding a cylinder and it occasionally hydro locks during cranking, but that would not explain the gauge activity

Check all battery connections, and test your fuses. This is one big meltdown it's having here

Check fuses at the panel. Or it could be a relay.

It's either a short in the instrument cluster, or that aftermarket stereo is shorting out the instrument cluster.

I have a 2007 Ford Explorer and I just started having issues with it I do believe it's the wire harnesses self because when I started digging into it all the wires are crumbling in the wires are exposed and touching each other it's going to be a long process to fig straighten it out but I already did one and it ran much better and I'm moving on so everything is fixed

Just to let you all know I had the exact same problem on my 2014 ford explorer 3.5 V6 and it turned out to be the transcender, sometimes called the transponder.

Just bought a 2010 expedition max, a week later came back from grocery store started truck and hazards were going ofd, couldn't turn them off as well as my brights were doing same thing, but truck was locked in park, turned truck off and still everything flashing. Went off fifteen minutes later and it was fine. Same thing a week later except this time it was towed back to dealership. Thankfully dealership is picking up the $800.00 Bill of diagnosis (which the truck was not doing it when they got it) but replacing the ignition switch and something else I can't remember. So maybe it's your ignition switch.

Try checking either the battery (including terminal connections) or the alternator. Could be one or the other...or worst case scenario...both have gone out at once.

Had this same problem with my 2005 ford explorer could not find the problem it happened mostly when it was dump or raining out but would happen all the time. I had the charging system checked no problem and could not figure it out but last month my alternator died and fixed the problems it had full charge and no problems before then but if you have this problem try changing the alternator.

what do you mean by clearing the codes? isnt it the same as removing the negitive cable from the battery and wait five minutes then place it back on?

My 2004 Ford Sportrac xlt is doing this. Had them check alternator and battery. Does it for a minute straight when it was raining, and continues off and on for about 15 minutes. incidentally, the driver door lock has not worked for some time-have to physically push it down or use key to lock and unlock. Any new solutions?

    • @ggarcia0087
      @ggarcia0087 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Well the problem started because I went to McDonald's and as the passed my soda over the window I guess the lid wasn't on right and caused a small spill and some of the soda got on the instrument cluster causing it to short circuit and causing this virus. After I replaced it it never did it again.... NOTE: if you do replace it with a used one you have to get the mileage adjusted or it will display the wrong numbers. Dealer did it for 150.00.

Yeah do yourself a favor and head to the scrap yard and grab as many battery saver relays as you can. The yard around my place has an all you can carry day a few times a month. The relays are a few hundred bucks, so a wrecking yard is worth the trip.
