FORD EXPLORER INSTRUMENT CLUSTER NOT WORKING

  • So, I had a 2016 Ford Explorer brought into my shop. The vehicle came from a local car dealership that I do diagnostic and troubleshooting work for. They had recently replaced the a/c evaporator core. The job required the removal of the entire dashboard. After they reassembled the vehicle, they noticed that the vehicle would start, run and drive just fine. But the instrument panel would not illuminate. They also noticed that none of the steering wheel controls and buttons worked. Anyways, after a brief struggle, they sent the vehicle to me to have it troubleshooted. In this video I share with you how I found the simple solution to the problem. I hope this video helps anyone that may be dealing with the same problem.

From a Ford dealership technician, GOOD CATCH.👍 This is the kind of thing that can easily happen to the best of us. A very similar situation to this that I can recall, is another tech in my shop had replaced the HCU on an Escape Hybrid many years ago. Well, after replacement and numerous attempts to bleed the system (there is a special procedure for Hybrids), he was getting no brake pedal and hard faults that wouldn't clear. After being stuck in his bay for about three weeks and numerous back and forth interactions with Ford Technical Assistance Hotline later, Ford finally sent over an area rep to assist. Long story short, it was discovered that there were two HCU lines installed in incorrect locations. Upon reinstall, the system was finally bled successfully and fault codes cleared. Fast forward to a few years later, another Escape Hybrid came in on the hook and into my bay after an outside shop had replaced the master cylinder and HCU and then ran into the same issue as described above. Any guesses as to what the outside shop did wrong? Yup the very same two lines got misrouted.

I've seen this before where connectors were switched. Actually made this mistake myself once. Thanks for sharing! 👍

Yeah, normally Ford connectors that look the same have a notch that doesn’t allow you to plug it into the wrong spot. Thanks for watching!

Shame on Ford. Make the connectors different or label them clearly. At least a different color. Thanks for pointing this out. You just saved somebody a lot of time/money.

Good video! I would have made the same mistake based on the cable lengths. The lesson I take away is don't take anything for granted! Good thing you decided to try to swap those cables just in case, otherwise the vehicle could have been in your shop a lot longer & you could have gained a few more grey hairs!

If I was doing that job I would have labeled those wires somehow I would have put a piece of tape on each one of them and then put a number on them so then there'd be no way that they can be mixed up but anyways that's a great video thank you you brought something to my attention I never thought about

Only sloppy engineering will have two adjacent connectors that can be installed with wires swapped. I guess with robots putting cars together now, those kind of human errors never happen during assembly..

Makes sense for the longer wire on the steering column due to the range of positions you can have it in.

Ive got a 13 explorer at the shop now, Instrument panel works but has no speedometer, and will not come out of 1st gear, customer thought the VSS was bad which is internal to the transmission so they put a new reman trans in it, same issue, still no speedo, no codes whatsoever, all fuses and relays check out fine. All connections are good on computer and transmission and Instrument panel, not really sure where to start on this damn thing! Wondering if the computer itself is bad and not getting vss signal, whats your opinion??

Hello, excellent video, very good explanation of the disassembly of the cluster, but I would like to know if you could place or tell me where to get the connected or power diagram to be able to turn it on in the test bench. since I have tried to turn it on outside the car and I have not been able to. thank you

Nissan has a similar situation with the with engine sensor connectors that are possible to swap...If in doubt, confirm thru wiring diagram and their wire colors. Seen it once on a Nssan to my amazement....

hi. the instrument cluster on my 2013 Ford Explorer suddenly died while driving. the car still runs. but the instrument cluster doesn't turn on, wipers and indicator lights are ok and the radio doesn't stay on (thinks that the car is switched off). how do I test if the problem is with the instrument cluster or the steering module?

Hi I am really hoping you might be able to help me. I feel like I am getting a complete run around from my dealer. I just bought a 2020 Ford Fusion with only about 35,000 miles on it. I took it back in after only driving it about 3. They have had my car for about a month now with no answers.
Just to give you a little information, the cars instrument panel keeps glitching through all sorts of notifications like engine on, door open, service needed, break on etc. The problem is that this is only happing when the car gets hot or when it is hot outside. Through out the night it is sitting and when it is turned on in the morning everything is back to normal but in the afternoon about lunch time when the car is sitting in the parking lot in the heat it happens again. I know that you will probably have to see the car to diagnose it but I am just hoping you might have seen something like this in your line of work and might be able to help.

I have to replace the left screen in my 2013 explorer which means I have to remove the instrument cluster. Am I going to have to remove the entire dash or can the cluster be removed by just removing the panel on top of the steering wheel? I'm having trouble find anything on this.

checking powers and grounds you didn't notice pin location was different

    • @ADVANCEDLEVELAUTO
      @ADVANCEDLEVELAUTO  5 ปีที่แล้ว

That’s where I slipped up. Looking at the diagram and only paying attention to the wire color. Powers and grounds were the same color for both connectors. Granted, I didn’t think that connectors could have been swapped. Then again, I didn’t take it apart or put it back together. And I’ve never known Ford to use the same connectors. Normally they will have a notch that will not allow you to mix them up.
