  • In today's video, we will be exploring the intriguing history of trade and political contact between the Kingdom of Ayutthaya and the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties of Korea. These events mark the earliest recorded contact between Thailand and Korea between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. It all started with a spontaneous journey by a Thai (or Chinese) merchant working for Ayutthaya trading in Japan. He heard rumors from Japanese Pirates (wokou) of a wealthy Confucian state across the Sea of Japan, and decided to see if he could make some profits.
Sorry, I am kind of rely a lot on one scholar, but Dr. Hung-guk Cho is the only scholar who has written extensively about these events. Most books and articles only treat it with passing reference, since they were events that never materialized into long-lasting relationships.
For information about Ayutthaya (Siamese) diplomacy with Korea see:
Hung-guk Cho, "Siamese Relations in the Late Fourteenth Century" (2006)
For information about Ayutthaya (Siamese) trade in Southeast and East Asia see:

Fun content to hear as a Korean. Thai fought for South Korea in the Korean war. And till this day North Korean refugees must pass China and Laos to finally get their freedom in Thailand to be able to get to South Korea. Gratitudes to Thailand.

Nai Gong sounds like a Thai word "นายกอง" or low level chief of staff in Thai. It's a title, not name. Why wasn't the name recorded anyway.

It's uncertain why the name wasn't recorded. The Koreans made had mistaken the title for his actual name when it was recorded in the Goryeosa

Homo erectus and cro magnon was THAI. no such thing as the out of africa theory. the out of thailand theory. thais the original humans

that theory exists even if u don't accept it. Homo erectus weren't human & didn't sucSEXsfully interbred with any humans. It's also possible that other human species originated &/ evolved in what is now China (Thais place of origin), & besides, we all have Neanderthal & Denisovans' genes. So, get rid of ur Thai centric world view!
