    This is an excellent video of the History of China. I have studied this history a lil bit and I can say that this gives a pretty accurate description of the events, it obviously leaves out quite a few details and more emotional aspects, in order to simplify the video, however it's very well made and like so many of Khan Academy's videos a lot easier to understand than History at school ha ha! :)

      Have you heard of Mr. Huang Xing, he's kind of chief military leader of the revolution while Mr Sun is definitely the spiritual father of the republic idea of China, and the initiator and founder of the party called "Tong Meng Hui of China", the party that later transformed int KMT. So in history China credited Mr Sun as the father of the republic China.

    One huge reason for Communist victory was because right before WW2 ended, the Soviets launched an offensive against Japan and their puppet Manchuko (Manchuria). The result was victorious for SU, and besides taking northern half of Korean peninsula, South Sakhalin and Kuril Islands, Soviets also occupied Manchuria, and soon after WW2 they gave it to the Chinese communist. This gave CCP a huge boost, since Manchuria was rich with Japanese industry, weapons, and plus additional man power.

    • @billskchen3193
      @billskchen3193 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      In fact after the WW2, the Soviet union supported KMT more and signed a deal with ROC and not allowed CCP troops tookover big citys in Manchuria.

      come on, all the biggest cities in northeastern china, which is so called machuria, were handed over to KMT ( including three provinces' capital cities, btw there are only three provinces), it is chinese people who choosed and suppoted communist party to win.

    Great Vid! You just forgot to mention some stuff. Firstly, Sun Yat-sen was not the first president of the Republic of China, he was a provisional president, someone who is in control during periods of transition. The 1st President was Yuan Shih-kai in 1912. Also, you can also mention specifics, such as Britain controlling the Tibetan Region which was West of China, Japan controlling certain key ports in the East and South and Russian forces in Mongolia often found themselves trying to control Manchuria. Also, it's crucial to mention the Revive China Society (1894-1895) and the Tongmenhui (Revolutionary Alliance in 1905) that Sun formed and attempted to overthrow the Manchu (Qing) Government in 1895. He fled to Europe and USA and experienced Western values. He returned in 1911 to establish the KMT with the purpose of westernising China. He then fled to Japan in 1913, after Sung Chiao-jen was assassinated by Yuan Shih-kai after suggesting that the President receives less power. Yuan made himself military dictator, banned the KMT in 1913 and the Chinese Parliament in 1914. Meanwhile, Sun encouraged rebellions from Japan, but Yuan put them down easily as he had full support from the Army. Emperor Pu Yi, who abdicated in 1912 after he was convinced by Yuan (by the way, at the time Pu Yi was like 3 years old), tried to re-gain control in 1917, but it didn't work. Sun returned to China the same year and created the KMT based on the 1912 constitution. He was allowed to as Yuan died in 1916, so the ban was lifted. This resulted in the KMT growing in the South in Canton. The May 4th Movement performed by the working class and students also helped shape the KMT and CCP (Chinese Communist Party established in 1921) as it promoted reforms and eradication of Confucian ideas. The CCP and KMT joined forces in 1923, known as the First United Front, which was part of the concept of the Comintern (Communist International), as the Soviets saw the want for change in China as an opportunity to spread the ideology in Asia. This was advantageous to both sides, as the CCP lacked the popularity, which the KMT had, and the KMT received organizational and financial help from Soviet Russia. Negotiations ended between Sun and Adolf Joffe (Russian Diplomat) in 1923 and the alliance was formed. The government controlled the Southern region of China (those who weren't under warlords) and eventually began military training in an academy in Whampoa, under Chiang Kai-shek, to defend attacks from warlords and expand. The KMT was very popular in Kwangtung also, mainly due to the nationalism, freedom from foreigners, Sun's 3 Principles of the People (which intellectuals and students agreed with), protection vs warlords and foreigners and lastly, the CCP aspect helped broaden the popularity as factory workers agreed with the socioeconomic reforms. So, in 1925, Sun dies, and suddenly (and naturally), there is a fight for power. Chiang Kai-shek believes he is the obvious candidate and immediately orders the KMT members to remove CCP members holding key positions within the government. This was known as the Canton Purge of 1926 (in January). However, the 3 Principles of Sun weren't complete as most of the support was from Kwangtung and the country was not unified. Therefore, as early as 1922, the KMT began preparing for the 1926 Northern Expedition. With the aid of the Soviets, the defeated 2 warlords by the end of 1926 and they occupied all regions South of the Yangtze River. This was due to 4 years of preparations, Soviet aid, modern weapons from USA and Germany, training with the NRA and 250 000 citizens, tired of the warlords, joined the NRA. Although everything seemed fine, in 1927 people were divided on who should lead the party, Chiang or Wang Ching-wei. Chiang was more traditional than Wang and Sun, he believed that preserving the traditions was better than westernising. Wang, however, agreed with Sun and believed reforms were the only way. Therefore, due to many disagreements, 2 KMT parties were set up, one in Wuhan (led by Wang) and the other in Nanchang led by Chiang. By the end of 1927, the KMT took control of Hankow, Shanghai and Nanking. In 1928, Peking even fell to the KMT and this CAN be seen as the emergence of a New China in a way. Hope this short explanation gives you all an idea.

    As a Taiwanese American I can give you this tip: Don't preach independence, and don't promote "re-unification". Stay middle of the road: status quo is a safer (for Taiwan's own future as well), moderate approach generally accepted (at least not vehemently opposed) by all parties. Most Taiwanese are moderate. However, in southern Taiwan, independence movement is more popular, but not necessarily universal. Questions?

    KMT had more money and controlled the economical regions like Shangai but they never had real control in the inland, the rural areas, where the influence of Chinese Communists was evident (more focusing in the rural than russian communists) and supposed a big human capital, essential and the key under a good leadership for win the war.

    I think the voice-over narration style and production techniques speaks far more of group intention and orientation than any topic or subject cared to be broached here.So much for the age of populism and collective participation. European Imperialist painters perfected the art of capturing their royal patrons peering from high horses, always downwards on to their subjects. Newer developments have occurred since then, like global mass media organizations, very much like investment banks of recent times also, applying similar techniques to line their own pockets. instead of serving any larger ends

    Excellent primer.. Is there any chance of explaining the politics of Taiwan.. It seems like a minefield of complexities. I'm moving there soon and I don't want to tread on peoples sensibilities. Many thanks.

    The History of China is very interesting, an interesting question is what if the Manchu Restoration had succseeded? would China be a Monarchy again? would they have support from Japan?

    There are several reasons that the chinese communist party defeated kmt in 1949.
    1.The kmt didn't defeat the communist in 1935, leaving about 8000 people of the chinese communist alive
    2.While the invasion of japan against china took place in 1937,the Kmt knew that japan was a lot stronger than china so they retreated towards the centre of china,leaving the civilian behind,causing millions of people killed by japanese. That made people angry and discontented about the moves that the kmt has made

    I believe Chiang was also kidnapped by his generals in 1936 and forced to sign a ceasefire with Mao to form a united force against the Japanese, which would prove useful as less than a year later in 1937 a full-blown war broke out.

    Taiwan was neglected during the World War. When the Japanese had invaded the area, there was little or no support from the Chinese government, as they too had things on their hands. Since, they live and feel like a different country with different culture.
