    So basically, because Ol' Georgie was obsessed with making his precious Duke the best game ever, he ended up sinking his own pet project because he just couldn't accept the fact that technology marches on and it would have become dated regardless.

      It's pretty sad. This kind of development hubris and constant feature/engine-creep has been the death of more than one game. The exact same thing happened to Daikatana. I think fully 3D FPS development in the late 90's was a really rocky place to be, particularly around 1997. Duke Nukem 3D was in the right place at the right time, but DNF landed fully on the other side.

    This game was huge in the 90's. Shrinking an enemy, then squishing them with your boot. Freezing them, then kicking them to pieces. Tossing a pipe bomb under their feet and watching the gibs fly across the screen. This kind of stuff was amazing to me and my fellow teenage buddies.

      Everything was better back then, there were much more new IPs, now everything is a lame/atrocious remake/remaster, there was creativity and push for doing something new, exploring and taking advantage of the potential that videogames as a medium has.

    I think the doc over-states the controversy of Duke 3D's more salacious content in the 90s. At the time, the level of violence in the Doom games was still a sticking point for those looking to make video games a scapegoat for real-world violence; comparatively, things like the strippers were just features that made the game more edgy and adult to most of the actual audience, and thus, more desirable. Today, of course, DNF comes off as the worst of all worlds: Off-color enough to offend, not ribald enough to be exciting compared to what's available on the Internet, too in-your-face to be ignored, and not in a good enough game to "surf the wave" on style.

    • @marekjurko4548
      @marekjurko4548 3 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      I think it's more "offensive and controversial" now than then, that's why the doc puts so much emphasis on it. In 90's people seemed ok with chauvinist nature of the content, but worried it may be "pornographic" or "illicit". Now it seems we went the other way around.

      This reminded me how Duke would poke fun at other games. In Forever, he goes "Power armor is for pussies" as if making fun of Halo directly (the armor is also a DIRECT copy of master Chiefs armor) . . . While in Duke 3D, he would make a off hand cheeky remark about "not bein afraid of no quake" when there was a earthquake.
      I don't know how to explain it, maybe Forever seemed too full of itself by insulting directly a game that was much better than it was, while 3D was more "bro poking fun at his other bro" type of humor. Just a little poke and knowing smirk.

With multiple changes in game engines, and being development hell for so long, I that knew from the start that Duke Nukem Forever would most likely flop. However, I still bought the game on day one release knowing that it already looked dated and unpolished. I wanted to fulfill that nostalgia and hear more of the Duke's one liner banter. I really wish people stopped refering to Duke as "parody" (I'm also quilty of that . . . So sorry) because Duke Nukem is Pastiche of 80s American action movie culture.
    While it is made with tongue-in-cheek, it also revels in the fun and action of the genre. Duke is a fun celebration of that culture, not a takedown attempt.

    • @psyc8407
      @psyc8407 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Parodies aren’t necessarily criticisms, they’re “humorously exaggerated imitations”. Think about what Spaceballs is to Star Wars, poking fun at the genre whilst throwing it’s own spin on it. That’s what Duke Nukem is to every action hero from Terminator to Chuck Norris. It even pokes at the dark age of comic books a bit, with the gun touting action hero and frequently sexual content.

    • @Mecks089
      @Mecks089 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I agree on the surface of the content, but with the context it kinda was relevant to the story though, the whole deal with the aliens in DN3D is that they wanted Earth's women, not resources, not a world of slaves, not total elimination, but for reproduction purposes, kill off the male species, and use the female one.
      It's physically shown in both the Plutonium Pak expansion, and in DNF.
      So in a sense, it's the aliens that are the real misogynists, it it even applies to an alien species. -__-
      Point being that Duke was fighting to save women and save humanity along with the Earth, doesn't help that the women caught by them were already traumatized and abused into begging for death. In the console and some spin-off versions you could literally save the babes at a push of a button, don't know why the original game never had that feature.
      And the only time I can remember, where Duke had to purposely kill off women was in the Christmas Expansion: Nuclear Winter. Killing militarized female elves working for a brain washed Santa Claus - Yeah Nuclear Winter was pretty much held as the worst expansion for the series.

    To make Duke work in today's landscape the entire development team needs to watch Robocop and use that as their muse in regard to how to juggle violence, vulgarity, excess and humor, while avoiding coming across as mean spirited. Robocop works as a straight action movie and as a dark satirical comedy. This balance is essential to Duke in my mind. If Duke were a movie it would be a collaboration between Paul Verhoeven and John Carpenter.

      Absolutely! Embrace the soul of the series, there is no point trying to chase after people who do not like what is already there and made Duke loved to begin with.

      I mean you probably won't get much more than an indie game. Worth considering that DNF sold only about 375000 copies in its launch month across all three platforms, which is completely unviable by any modern AAA standards. I mean Agents of Mayhem sold a similar amount over 6 months and that nearly bankrupted Volition. The audience, just like the audience for experimental arcade racers, simply isn't there to warrant a AAA project.

    If ever there was a franchise that needed a chance at a redemptive sequel it is Duke Nukem. I fucking love both Duke and his games.

    Duke Nukem deserves a comeback. He didn't deserve this tragedy.

    Randy Pitchford had a big hand in stalling development, funneling the Duke Nukem money into Borderlands 2... would've rather had Duke.
