    Hey everyone, we're finally re-uploading our Half-Life video as the original had a song that was marked by TH-cam's copyright system. For the most part, this is still very much the video that we've made and uploaded in 2018, with a sizable number of sections now featuring higher quality gameplay and other slight tweaks. We've left the narrated audio and the credits the same to reflect the people who have helped us make this video possible at the time.
    Considering the franchise has recently made a successful comeback with Half-Life: Alyx, we want to let you know that this is not the last piece of coverage we'll dedicate to the series. We're launching a new format that will dive into franchises that have seen new releases or other signs of life since we've last covered them in our Rise and Fall videos (Command & Conquer, Crysis and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. to name a few), but more on that later!
    For now, we hope you'll enjoy (again) our video about the history of Half-Life. The re-uploaded Dead Space video will soon follow!

    In 1998, a little known company named Valve released a first-person shooter named Half-Life and changed the face of gaming. Where other shooters struggled to provide even a semblance of a story, Half-Life had brains to match its brawn; a stirring tale featuring a realistic human cast and a protagonist that was more than a hand and a gun unfolded before the player’s eyes as they progressed through each level.
    As Valve grew, so too did Half-Life’s reputation, with Half-Life 2 in 2004 once again revolutionizing the genre, and its episodic expansions, Half-life 2: Episode One and Episode Two, further raising the bar. The series didn’t release consistently, and occasionally suffered unexpected and painful setbacks; but when it did, it seemed as if Valve could do no wrong - until the series suddenly stopped. Shifting priorities, a lack of motivation, and other, more nebulous factors would lead Valve to put Half-Life on ice in the middle of its prime, leaving a generation of gamers adrift, and an opus unfinished.
    And yet - Half-Life lives on. Be it in the innumerable games and series it inspired or provided the computative bedrock for, an undying stream of mods, or other media based on the franchise, Half-Life’s DNA is permanently embedded in the fabric of the video game industry, and will likely remain so for some time. As sad as it is that a Half-Life 2: Episode 3 or a Half-Life 3 will likely never happen, and as frustrating as it is that Valve remains belligerent as to precisely why, the series, for the most part, has only really fallen… out of Valve’s hands.
    This is the rise and fall of Half-Life.

      The US Government doesnt matter because Gordon didn't leave Xen until they were dissolved, and the special forces were still up against a bullet proof spacesuit. The Combine did kind of corner him a lot of times, in fact the ending to HL2 wouldnt have happened if Gordon wasn't caught with his pants down almost voluntarily.

      How is it like being a dev

    • @IceGoldDev
      @IceGoldDev 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

       @Cobra 1commander TL;DR at the end :)
      The first thing to mention is, people tend to look at game dev through rose-colored glasses. If you look at school dropout rates for these programs, you'll see it's staggering. People tend to think it's all fun and games (ha) but they drop out after realizing you should essentially be comfortable living in front of your monitor for months on end, doing (often) genuinely miserable, back-breaking, soul-crushing, consistent work for each project. (Of course, some people decide to focus on comp-sci OR art as opposed to something as general as game development because those choices are safer career-wise and that's why they drop out.)
      That being said, there are always moments in any project where you get an indescribable sensation of pride and excitement when you see your creation come to life. For a small minority of people, that's enough to keep them going. For most people though, not really.
      If you're an indie, the insane fluctuations in the market can either destroy you or, if you do everything right AND get incredibly lucky, build you up to peaks you couldn't even imagine. Your success is what you make it, and it takes a -LOT- of effort to make success. You shouldn't expect to make a dime for a long, long time - most indies never do. However, being free from any outside control, you have the opportunity, albeit incredibly small, to actually make something unique that will live on and will inform other people's designs for a couple of generations of games to come.
      If you make it into a team, usually through your resume as an Indie or your academic training (and work experience), you need to learn to function well with other people to make genuinely good work within your social and hierarchical limitations and obligations. Having other people around is both a safety net and a creative limitation. It's financially safer than being an indie, but it's still one of the least stable career choices out there - especially if you're in arts, design, or writing. Teams, especially smaller ones, tend to hire these sorts of professionals on a per-project basis. Technical and managerial jobs tend to pay better and last longer.
      You always run the risk of getting sick of the tug of war between what you want to do and what you have to do, and your hobby becoming your job is likely to make you less and less motivated to do it. The skillset you build doing this sort of work is amazing though. If you get the right training and have a knack for learning, you'll essentially have the opportunity to become the perfect entrepreneur: A problem solver, a designer, and a team manager with the necessary tools to make things happen - That's why you see a lot of retired developers start businesses or branch out into other creative work, etc.
      TL;DR
      It's exciting and terrifying. Tons of mental and physical investment with very low expectations for returns. You need to be very patient, juggle many social, personal, and technical skills, and juggle them well.
      I don't recommend it for the majority of people. If you think you might be into it, watch several hours of people talking about how dangerous and hard it is as a career, and take them seriously. If you're still convinced it's what you'd want to do after that, watch more. Then, MAYBE, MAYBE consider it.
      I hope I answered your question lol

    Bugger! I love Half-Life, but I've never finished a game. I got particularly stuck in HL2 and despite looking for clues/tips, could never get past a certain point, which made it all seem a waste of time -- I mean I replayed that sequence about 200 times and never found the hole in the fence. A person can get fed up with opening an ammunition box. I sure did, so eventually gave up. Maybe I should just play the follow-ups included in the Orange Box, although I hate giving up. Especially when there's a story!
    Having confessed all that, I really enjoyed this video and appreciate all the work you put into it, so thanks!

They brought games back to America with new coat of paint that captivated the world for the following decade 1990's, then in the 2000's 3d games blew up and the Western nations took over Gaming again but with new inspiration from Japanese how to do it right. it could still be ongoing since Alyx is prepping players for VR like HL3 being VR on release since Alyx furthers the ending of 2 episode 2, plus Valve acquiring teams for projects like TurtleRock post-Evolve, and Valve buying the Firewatch team just as they announced In the Valley of the Kings, most likely for a witty walking sim like portal 3.

    Frankly I don't think Valve wants to fully unravel the mystery behind the G-man, or maybe they simply don't know how to continue after creating such an enigmatic character, they probably fear that explaining it fully would almost certainly guarantee the series end
    If Valve can't find a way to continue, they should let the fans have a go at it. Just look at Black Mesa, prime example of what a fresh set of eyes and minds can do
    If half life 3 or episode 3 is ever going to become a reality, it better happen soon. Last thing we need is for half life to associate itself with the likes of Duke Nukem Forever, where so much time had passed it can't generate any interest anymore
