I always thought Duke: Zero Hour was a hidden gem. I felt alone on that opinion but when I go back and play it, I came to a similar conclusion: that game holds up.
Aside from Forever, Zero Hour is really the only Duke Nukem I've ever played to an appreciable amount. I've always thought it was pretty great! I definitely agree that it's something of a hidden gem, though, because whenever I end up talking about Duke with someone, it's pretty uncommon that they've even heard of Zero Hour. I actually quite enjoyed Land of the Babes back in the day, about 20 years ago in the early 2000's, but it did introduce me to Static X with the opening cinematics.
I bought the collectors edition of Forever. I had pretty low expectations for it and seen it as a 'now or never' sort of thing. I enjoyed it for what it was even if it was a decade out of fashion at that point. I wasn't expecting a incredibly awesome game, or a game that took advantage of a 12+ year development cycle. I just wanted to see the joke put to rest.
In the words of Yahtzee from Zero Punctuation, Duke Nukem has certainly put an end to all those jokes, if only because they’re now more tragic than funny.
Don't see how it was out fashion at all. Game played fine. Character and dialogue was as expected. The game was fine overall. Only issue is just the entitlement off people who taught they were owed more simply because it took a long time, and of course the outrage mob complaining over the humour, which is also likely why Wokebox won't make another one and instead are just relying on licencing and rereleases. Hopefully they sell it back to 3D Realms once the Borderlands money runs dry.
Yeah, Duke 3D was the first Duke game I played and I laughed my ass off when, at one section, I had to demolish a building by detonating a load of explosives from a control room. My instincts told me an enemy was waiting for me in there so I shot a rocket through a window, gibs flew everywhere and Duke proudly bellowed "Fire in the hole, asshole." I was a sprouting young teen turning adult back then.
Do you honestly think they could make a proper Duke Nukem game in the era of the triggered? It would be this offends me'd out of existence before it even got started.
@@riks081 I don't think so. Nostalgia would likely matter more than any "offensive content". Besides, all of the strippers and damsels in distress and porn in Duke is played for laughs. It's poking fun at misogynist tropes if anything.
Duke Nukem 3D has got to be one of my favorite games that I can still play from time to time and thoroughly enjoy. Played it first time somewhere around 1999. On a PC that didn't even have a sound card. It was some years later I've even discovered Duke's voice and personality :D
They should do a full DLC where the enemies are changed to Duke Nukem enemies, add some hive women, and it's a good Duke Nukem game. Really fun game and Duke actually fits into the story mode.
I actually played a lot of DNF multiplayer when it came out for a couple years and I was surprised to see some the same people still playing it, it's down to a couple dozen players at this point :D. In 2012 we even organized a tournament for it :D I won the first round but that was the one and only. So rechincally I won the only DNF community tournament
@@miciso666 It looked fine in 2011 imo. Remember that many gaming journalists shit on it just becasue it was offensive too lol. Though the Duke community on Duke4 for example fairly criticized the game too, it's a deeply flawed game but I had fun with it :D
@@drivanradosivic1357 That's because DNF was completed as a PC game by 3D Realms in 2009, the console versions were developed in 2009-2011. before 2011 it originally had all weapons available and larger levels. Proof is in some footage from 3D realms offices and the guys at Duke4 revealed the larger levels, cut off by the buses in the Vegas levels for example. Gearbox changed the Duke model, added the weapon limit and reduced level size, and developed the console ports.

I also used to be annoyed by sentry drones in Duke Nukem 3D, but then I figured out how they're meant to be handled. Pretty much any time there's multiple of the drones around, there's also a door nearby that can be opened and closed. The trick is to get the drones to seek you out, but close the door before they hit you (you can even close them far in advance) and then stand next to your side of the door, pretty much pressing yourself against the door, and they'll explode on the other side of the door without doing any damage. That's how these drones are meant to be deal with. That, and shooting them. But, shooting them is like a secondary way. They're really easy to deal with in the way I've mentioned.
duke 3D was my first video game as a child. I would watch my dad play it on our brick of a computer and me and my brother would fight 'the one eyed monster' (is that the in game name I never remember) recently my brother purchased a copy and we played it again together and it's still an absolute favorite.
I think we can all agree that the most important take away is that comic book villan Randy Pitchford is a total f*cking creep. Also, despite his best efforts to take a huge shit on the franchise I will always remember the golden years (year?) and teach the children that Duke is an utter legend while Randy will always be remembered as the creepy blight on the industry that he most certainly is.
You got a new fan man! This was an amazing video, I learned a lot about Duke Nukem. I played the first side scroller then the next one I played was 3D.
Duke64/Duke3D is pretty much *the* Duke Nukem game, far as I'm concerned. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed playing Zero Hour on my N64 as a kid, but looking back on it, it really wasn't that good. I can still jump into a game of Duke3D and have fun. Not so much with the other games.
I still remember my mom buying me the Atomic edition. It came in a kinda holographic/shiny box and had so much good stuff in it. I look back and can't believe she bought it for me. I must have been like 9 years old. Imagine my utter glee when my 9 year old self found the strippers and tried the trusty ol' spacebar...
I guess it was mentioned already, but "Kick ass and chew bubblegum" is quote from They Live, not Army of Darkness. "Hail to the king" is from Army of Darkness however.
Zero Hour is one of the most criminally-underrated games on the Nintendo 64. I played both that and Time to Kill back in the day and there was no question that when ZH came out, it was an improvement in nearly every way.

My first ever experience with THE Duke, I was just a small child playing a platformer, jumping around. That’s it… First time with Duke Nukem 3D, however, I was at *MediaPlay* with my older brother right when it was released. He was checking out some CDs, and I happened to walk by the computer with Duke Nukem on it *while nobody was in line waiting to check it out*… I probs played it for an hour or so, until my brother came and got my so we could dip.. My next experience was almost 2 years later, when I got Duke Nukem 64 for Christmas.. That was the first game I found EVERY secret in, without GamePower/GameInformer/The Duke Nukem Strategy Guide. I knew it was different somehow, but wasn’t sure because I was so young… Used to torture my little brother in multiplayer AND Co-Op (trapping him while I went and cleared levels, laughing at him crying like a dick bag 😂, but it’s ok we love each other).. When my older brother went to college the following year, his roommate had a PC that was actually capable of playing Duke Nukem 3D (98% of PCs were potatoes in the 90s, fun fact) and I got to completely relive the TRUE glory that Duke Num 3D had to offer, titties, badass music, more gore and all!!! The 90s really were THE best time of ALL TIME to be alive and old enough to experience it.. I see my kidbitchass at that fuckin MediaPlay computer checkin out video game titties and rockin out to the soundtrack while cussing to this day, like it’s happening right now 😂 It’s a happy sad kinda feeling.
I have multiple games from the 90's I still love and play today. Duke nukem 3D is obviusly one off them. I played games sinch I was inn diapers, and duke nukem 3D was one off the games I played tons off before I even went to school. (Mom was a gamer and allowed it! 🤣) to this day, I own duke nukem 3D on mostly every console wich allowes it. (Obviusly have it on PC) but it's a shared spot with Doom (most likely the very 1st game I ever played) and Command and Conquer tiberian sun.
Duke 3D will always be the best. I still remember the days of using the awesome build editor to make maps as it was more stable & better than the Doom editors at the time.
14:16 My guess is that's because the N64 doesn't actually HAVE a dedicated sound processor - it's all handled in software on either the CPU or the RSP (one of the co-processors). The game was probably too hard on the hardware already, and adding music into the mix of things would have even further hurt performance.
I honestly had no problem with DN Forever, I liked it a lot. I agree that if it had come out earlier rather than 2011, it would be a much bigger hit. But DN3D is definitely the best ever imo. Played it throughout my early childhood
I just find it sad thinking of what it COULD have been if a certain someone at 3D Realms hadn't gotten obsessed with DNF having to have every new feature that appeared in games duing development. The amazing looking version of DNF we saw in the E3 2001 trailer was completely scrapped and development restarted. Why? Because Doom 3 had dynamic lighting and shadows, so DNF had to have it. Problem was once that lighting was implemented it required all the existing maps, assets etc to be redone. So that whole build/version was thrown in the trash. So happy the 2001 build leak happened, and esp that the leak included the entire source code. So there is a "DNF restoration project" to finish the build. They have a "first slice" demo you can download to check it out. Plus it was just fun playing around with the build, reading comments in the source code etc.
I own DN Forever..... I thoroughly enjoyed it.... I thought I wouldn't at first... it has its flaws but its definitely not the piece of shit people make it out to be.... I still play it....
Well, even if I have the same impression, the have points! People waited 10+ years to came out on an dated engine with personality and jokes that were im the wrong era, and also reg health and weapon limit! If it came around even 2006 it would have been recieved far better...
@@kamenanew9867 weren't complains that the jokes weren't as effective as in the 90's? No offense, I much prefer that era then the shitty modern one even if I wasn't lucky to be born in it...
Personally, I played Duke 3D first. In 92/93 I was playing games on my NES and Genesis and didn’t have access to a PC (a gaming worthy one) until I hit my teens in 95 where I received Doom on PC for my birthday and Commander Keen. I vividly recall in 96, that my friends couldn’t stop talking about Duke 3D and Diablo. I ended up getting them both and fell in love with both equally, but Duke 3D even more. We use to use the in game dial up system to call each other and play online (typically with just 3 or 4 of us max). We then found out about Ten Network and later Heat.Net and the world of online gaming was open to us forever. I ended up enjoying some of the PSone exclusive games. A total guilty pleasure I suppose.
DN3D was one of the first games to use LAN for coop multi player. Great memories of playing with my boys. The hirez eDuke project has given all the old maps new life with all new OpenGL textures. Still a blast to play after all these years.
The one part that got me was at the beginning when Duke is strapped into a chair with monitors and shit all around him (basically the exact same opening from COD black ops) except instead of torture devices on the table in front of him it’s just dildos vibrating all over the place.
Duke Nukem Forever is still in my top 5 most favorited games of all time. It was a perfect combination of action and adultness. It occupied a niche that no other FPS had, or was too afraid to acknowledge. Duke Nukem is that stereotypical guy (many fantasize about but are too afraid to acknowledge. I think people are too critical of the details in DN Forever, and not the experience, creativity, and uniqueness that went into creating this piece of legendary epic art. Most games are inevitably forgotten about, but DN, regardless of its flaws, pauses, and successes, will never be. Plus Forever was patriotic as h*ll, lmao. Most games will preference violence over life and adult things, cause perhaps most developers think/know that excess violence stimulates/hides/creates a facade players will learn to endure. Idc what y'all think, DN Forever got it all right ;), haha.

They have made one, serious Duke. I've seen a trailer or 2 it uses serious Sam engine and pushes the Duke story line, it's really awesome. I think Gman covered it.
D.DoT-Z yeah, when it comes to the classic versions of all the games, duke was easily my favorite. Only doom 64 comes into competition. Really wish they made a version equal to the greatness of the old one.
*Reboot
What do you mean again? Doom never stopped being badass.
That would've been awesome, but then again, Gearbox owns Duke, and they keep fucking him up.
I guess 3D sorta takes the spotlight, and Forever is always a talking point, uh, sadly, haha.
Zero Hour is awesome! I'm glad to have it in my collection.
I'll go as far has saying Zero Hour is the second best game in the series. Having no checkpoints sucks though because the second level can be such a pain in the ass. Everyone I knew gave up on it because of Liberty or Death.

Thank you. God freaking dammit, THANK YOU!!! I was waiting for this tip my entire life.

Well, even if I have the same impression, the have points! People waited 10+ years to came out on an dated engine with personality and jokes that were im the wrong era, and also reg health and weapon limit! If it came around even 2006 it would have been recieved far better...
@@Bobby14 'wrong era' determined by whom?
Still a blast to play after all these years.
late comment: my first Duke Nukem was Duke Nukem 64 and i really loved it and actually like it more than the others
Wow, I'm spoiled, only remember the first 3d version. Then Wolfenstein and Doom around the same time. So many good memories
I remember Time To Kill! I enjoyed it but but when trying to jump did get me killed a lot 🤦♂️.
You totally forgot the expansion for Duke Nukem Forever!!! “The Doctor Who Cloned Me”
Nah, it sucked.
GmanLives I remember it had some good moments.
The one part that got me was at the beginning when Duke is strapped into a chair with monitors and shit all around him (basically the exact same opening from COD black ops) except instead of torture devices on the table in front of him it’s just dildos vibrating all over the place.
Dane Swanger I liked the burning bush and moon buggy
@@Gggmanlives It being bad doesn't mean it doesn't exist
Damn I never knew about Duke Nukem: Zero Hour, I would have loved that as a kid!
*Don't worry about it, saving chicks is what I'm all about!* "Gameplay"
What an exhaustive, fantastic retrospective. Bless you, sir.
Be nice to see the return of Duke, AND Turok, really.
