What I love about Futurama and early Simpsons is that they’re episodes are filled to the brim with jokes. There are the big laughs but there are also several little jokes that could of easily not been there but were because of how dedicated the writers were. A good example of this is when Fry and Leela are falling and when they land she asks him “Are you alright” and he says “Oh yeah” and then the lights come on and he’s in an painful position. They didn’t need to put a joke in that scene but they did and that’s what makes the writing so special
For sure. And even when you're not laughing at the jokes, you're still being charmed by them. They maintain the show's enjoyable atmosphere so that even if you're not always laughing, you're still having a good time. There's almost never a dry moment that leaves you thinking that maybe the episode might've been better without that scene.
I think that comes from having writers who actually read books. That might sound obvious, but it really shows in the verbal dexterity of the scripts from the original Fox run -- the writers know so well how to fit as much substance as possible into the runtime without weighing it down.
@@christopher.saint.christopher Basic craftsmanship helps as well. Real Simpsons had a very simple rule: If a joke ever stopped being funny, they would replace it with something else better.
