    An interesting mix of views. As a player of the video game, I think the board game actually does a reasonable job. I can see the complaints about the boards, the utilitarian design isnt that inspiring and is only slightly interesting to fans of the video game- but to be honest most of the spaces get filled, especially if you have the hook and generator minis. The board is shiny, but we did not have any problems with distinguishing things, perhaps its a studio light issue? For a videogame adaptation its reasonably good- its on the lighter side, but then its nice to have something shorter. Having gotten Frostpunk, the complexities had all been simulated on the board game, and it was a bit much to be honest.
    Theres some good choices in the game such as quite a wide selection of survivors and killers to play with and different perks you can mix in to change your gameplay style. One negative production-wide for us is the movement cards seemed to be of variable quality and some of them are getting marked in the corners from just one play, so sleeves might be essential for these.

    You could see the board was too shiny even in the video.

    • @Lavoye

      I find it surprising because, in early developement, they adressed this issue, saying that they knew it was too shiny and they'ld work on it. It seems they didn't. That's a bit bothersome.

    The graphic design of the board has more of a cyberpunk vibe. Very simple and clean. Doesn’t mesh with the rusty, dirty, horror movie theme.

    Very fair review I think. I have the collector's edition and my group had a good time playing it but I do agree with some of the criticisms. I rated it a 7 on BGG, it's a game I think is fun but not one I'm looking to pull out all the time.
    - I haven't had a problem with the board being shiny personally, but I do agree that having a matte finish would have been useful for people that do.
    - I don't actually dislike the layout of the arrows and such on the board. Yes, it leaves something to be desired thematically, but on the other hand I do like that it's crystal clear what movement card goes with what symbol/color path on the board. So I'd probably rather have a boring looking board with clear lines and arrows than one that has nice looking art but which makes the paths harder to follow or read. That said, I do agree with Zee's comment that the way it looks is "uninspired" and the game would have definitely benefited if the board had even a modicum of thematic looking panache to it.
    - I do agree with the crew about it not scaling well for lower player counts. Personally if I was going to ask for one addition in an expansion it would be some sort of official system that lets you run survivors using a simple AI method (e.g. a survivor automa deck). That way even if you have fewer players you can fill in the gaps with some bot survivors and then the humans only have to worry about handling one character each. (There actually is an unofficial solo variant or two on BGG for the game that are pretty good where you can run a killer versus four bot survivors, for example, so maybe the designers will consider something like that as an add-on down the line? 🤷‍♂) Without the bots, though, it really is mainly a game for 5 players, 4 players at a minimum, which I think cuts back on how often you might get to play it depending on your group.
    - On the flip side, once you get past those negatives, the game itself is fun! 🙂 All the killers have unique thematic abilities, all the characters on both sides have unique thematic perks, there's a massive deck of alternate perks to play with as well, plus survivors get to occasionally find really useful items as they go too. So I think if you go into the game understanding the potential downsides above, the rest is a good ride.

    Thank you for the review. If I were to buy this game I would spray it with a good quality matte or satin finish such as Krylon which I've used for art and wargame components with good results in the past. (Although glare that obscures the strength of a wargame counter could be said to simulate attacking with the sun at one's back... 😉)

    When I saw this during the campaign, the board looked like crap. I was going to pass on it, but then I thought about the gameplay and decided to go back in. I'm more of a thematic gamer and don't like dry games that rely only on mechanics. With that said, I plan on doing a custom mat to help with the board and I think that should help my immersion.

    I can see their points about the game...however, I have played it at 3 players and I considered it to be a lot of fun. I can certainly see where it would excel at the 5 person count...but don't let that stop you from playing it. The collectors edition is great because of all the additional content (double the villains and heroes). The gameboards are indeed hard to view and very shiny and very plain...even for the different scenarios. Think of this like Final Girl...multiplayer. :)

    I remember seeing the graphic design, especially the board, during the KS campaign, and couldn't believe how bad it was for an IP game. I would have thought they would have done something better. So that made it an easy pass for me, even though I love the theme.

      It's actually a clean design. It won't win any beauty contests, but it actually works. So much of the game is movement and trying to predict what either the players are doing or the killer. I think the retail version when the prices drop would be worth a look

    It's good to know that the board was such a negative, as well as having some player count caveats. A 7 rating sounds very fair for a game that plays well and is fun to play but loses some points for the aesthetics and inaccurate player count (such as the early reviews for Terraforming Mars where the aesthetics were panned and yet it still had an 8 or 9 rating because the game was well designed and fun).

    This is the first game that my kids actually wanted to play again and again. We played it at 3 and 4 and enjoyed it a lot without many issues. They do play the video game so maybe that is why they had less issues remembering to use their abilities but we had no problem with the board and felt the card movement captured the game because you are always trying to trick the killer in where you are going while the killer tries to read your movements and because it is a game I can easily get them to the table with i give it a 8.5/10 for sure. Definitely more fun as you guys mentioned with the group getting into it.

I don't think they're complex enouph for me to mind, but i'm a gamer, i'm not a casual. I like having more stuff to think about. But I definitly prefer to play the killer, as every game is different. When you play survivor, your goal is always the same. The Killer will change the way you do it, but you still do the same thing. Where, when you play the killer, every game will be completely different.

    Just a heads up, and in case no one has mentioned this. You may be able to knock back some of that glare in the video using a polarizing filter for your camera. Of course, it doesn't help during gameplay, and that wouldn't help to illustrate the *glaring* problem (ahem). But a (circular) polarizing filter can help with this kinda thing. They usually require some adjustment to exposure also.

    I am a huge fan of the video game, I have spent hundreds of hours on it, so when I saw it on crowdfunding and how it was going to play... I knew it was a waste.
    Actually, IMO, this should have been a hybrid like "Treasure Island," or at least like the great "Sniper Elite", to be able to translate well the feeling of the videogame to the boardgame.
    In the end, I think the "Terrorscape" game on crowdfunding will fill this gap.

    • @Dreadnote-pf7of
      @Dreadnote-pf7of ปีที่แล้ว

      I actualy disagree with an idea of "this should have been a hidden movement game". Because yeah, its what comes to mind first and in general even LVL99 first prototype was a hidden movement game. But they change it and I think this was a right decision and now the game actualy feels more thematic and right to original. Because there Killers almost always knew where survivors are, maybe not exactly, but atleast on a level of "Ok, they are in this location". And they need to outsmart survivors to catch them or protect the gens.
      So... I could understand why many people would think that this must been a HM game, but I think that its was a right decision and in general game is very good and even that its handle IP BETTER than desktop original.

    • @ronyrodrigues1966
      @ronyrodrigues1966 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Dreadnote-pf7of I see... Don't know how a ramification Handle the IP better than the original intended "desktop original"... Since it's the ORIGINAL Intended. But ok. Cool you enjoy the game, I guess that's the point after all.

    • @Dreadnote-pf7of
      @Dreadnote-pf7of ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ronyrodrigues1966 well, I agree that its sound wrong. But, in example, how second movie in a series could use its setting better then a first one. Or how many players say that Legends of Runeterra/Arcane explore their setting better then League of Legends does. And to me this game is better at bringing this idea of "one powerful entity hunt down couple of survivors while they trying to escape from it" to life. Things that always turn me off agains the video game is, well, survivor behavior (especially when you playing in non-friend lobby) - the way how chases are going (especially in high ranks when people learn to run for minutes, stringing multiple obstacles together, running circles around some barrels etc.. And not even counting grieffing, t-bagging, flashlight flickering (and tunneling/camping from a killer side, and, while its better to split your attention and hook different survivors - this is still a case that could damage an expiriense). So... from time to time roles actualy could feel reversed, when survivors go like "its not us get locked with you..." when killer would feel like a clown (even when he doesn't play one) that just wander around, not able to do anything. And main skills of survivors was about learining this chase routes and how to press "die hard" correctly (I was mostly playing during last summer, so couple of things get changed in last big updates, but still).
      So to me this boardgame convey better emotions then original, killers and, especially, survivors feels more unique, killer side feel more powerful (but not in a unbalanced way) and in general it feels more "how its should be"... But its my opinion and yeah, you right that main thing in games is having fun and people should play what they like :D and sometimes something that we doesn't like could be a best thing in the world to other.
      Sorry about this block of not-as-grammaticly correct text, most importantly - have fun!

    To me this game is amazing. Maybe production is hurt this game THAT much, because I played this game through Tabletop Simulator, so all that shiny problems doesn't trouble me. So bad side of production doesn't hurt me, but as a good side too - no minis and other stuff...
    But, again, this game just hoooooked me when I first sees it - I translate all characters (so I could play with my non-english-speaking friends) I made a companion app for it so I could play it IRL (because rn I don't have a clear way to order it) and I am even not a DBD fan - I actualy tried to play desktop version and, well, spend a 20-40 hours in it... And what even more interesting to me - I think this game works with its IP a LOOOOT better that original game does, the feeling its conveys, the way how each killer and, most importantly, survivors are different from each other and just the way how it removes some weird behavior that almost all online games has - t-baging, griefing and in general even chases here feels good, while in original it is "running 10 laps around this barrels with Benny Hill music". And I would kinda dissagre on a topic of thematics there - yes, flavour here is important, but I think that even underneath it lies deep and interesting game that, in a same time, very light in its execution. Yeah, dicerolls are swingy and this loosen it up in terms of "serious game", but to me its still "mechanic first" game with decent theme then other way, this is not BaHotH or Arkham, this is another LVL99 game and they almost was that way - not a complete abstract stuff (well, maybe Bullet kinda is), but theme is just there.
    So... Yeah. I could see how this could be a miss and, sadly, I agree that its really need to be played in 5 people (but I still played it with 3-4 most of the times and even tried 2 player once... But yeah, complete control of one-player-survivor theme flips it on the head and remove social aspect that definetly enhance the expiriense). And I see that production wise its very hit-or-miss, but atleast to me board doesn't look as bad and, most importantly, the way arrows setup, color-and-icon coded is very handy and I doesn't had any problem with reading them even when I have a some color-blind issues. But I doubt that it would be easy with all that shine.
    But other than that - I think its very neat game that, yeah, while very light still has a LOT to offer, how most of passives of killers change how they played, how different actives change the game too, in example how Hillbilly's Lightborn (or something like that) allow you to show what you would do as a first move, but give you point for this or many others stuff that change the flow of the game and make it so assymetric... I loved that game, LVL99 design just pouring out of it and I think its a very decent game that could played with a "long gone into boardgame hell" (like myself, that, well... Played, learned and teached a lot of games... only in Tabletop Simulator I has more then 4000+ hours...) and someone new to the hobby, with people that played the original or not even seen it. And I actualy couldn't pin-point other games that could replace it, maybe closest of all it "Betrayal at House on the Hill" or "Hunt: The Unknown Quorry", but they are definetly not a 1to1 replacements.

    • @Dreadnote-pf7of
      @Dreadnote-pf7of ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, yeah, I remember - one game in a simular vein would be Terrorscape, that actualy is, well, a new game too... And I've looked into it... And IDK, to me even if production wise Terrorscape is better, but playing-feel wise... Its just borring. I couldn't even complete a full video playthrough of it, despite loving the playing crew itself. To me DBD is a lot more interesting mechanicly, more unique and customizable and just a better game that, yes, doesn't has a box that could be used as a dice tower. And just the idea that DBD is not a hidden movement game to me is interesting, because I think everyone would try to do it this way. Some fanmade DBD games was hidden movement, Terrorscape is hidden movement and even this game itself was hidden movement at first. But a first thought is not always a right one and to me the way they did it here is just right and, even more so, very thematic to a feeling of original game when most of the time killer actualy knew when survivors are, maybe not exactly, but like here, they would knew that survivors somewhere in "this location". And they need to outsmart them to catch or to force them out of objectives. So... Yeah, while Terrorscape is a better looking game in general, I highly doubt that its a, well, better game.

    There was a recent Kickstarter that just looked like a significantly better version of this without the specific Dead by Daylight theme. And, the production value was fantastic. The main difference would be the cat and mouse aspect is hidden by a player screen. And, that fog-of-war seems like it'd make a lot of sense in this type of game.

      Yeah, you are talking about "Terrorscape". And while HM is definetly a first idea that comes to mind when we talking about this type of game - I think actualy the way DBD handle it is a much more interesting then HM. I knon that LVL99 themselfs has a prototype that was based around hidden movement and couple of fan-made games that was made about DBD was HM too, but I think that LVL99 in the end created more interesting system. And yeah, Terrorscape is maybe a better looking game, but atleast to me, IDK why, but it fails in gameplay wise department, I was forcing myself to finish a video playthough of Terrorscape while on other hand DBD waa played like 15-20 times and this game actualy forced me to try an original desktop one (and, funny enough, I think that boardgame is better)

So I, again, doesn't think that its just an expiriense game and, as most of LVL99 games, I think its has a very solid gameplay foundation behind it (while, yeah, its in general on a lighter side, especially with dice rolls that, yes, could be too swingy)

    A glossy board is inexcusable in this day and age. Really makes me doubt the publisher plays many board games. And that's not even mentioning how ugly the board is. One look at it on the KSer and I immediately bounced off. We're saturated with beautiful games now, no one wants something this drab.

    Couldn't get past Joey's overview. May have been spoiled in what I've come to expect, but that felt all over the place. Sorry!

    I have mixed feelings about this trend of video game IPs turning into board games, that's what the video game exists for right?

    I didn’t back it especially because the board looked so awful.

    Wow, way to make a pretty fun video game into a horribly boring board game.
    Why do these designers make things too complicated and boring?

      I dunno, I feel like the designers accomplished a pretty accessible board game experience. Nothing about the rules makes it complicated to play at all. The graphic design is where the game failed the theme.
      But perhaps it just mirrors the poor decisions made by the video game designers.
