    A 50/50 mix of distilled water and ethylene glycol will not cause corrosion. The problem is that most people use tap water which contains minerals/salt/chlorine. These contaminants are what causes electrolysis/corrosion.

    • @leafydialupking1
      @leafydialupking1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +theedrstrangelove Tell that to the rusty mess that keeps coming out of my race motor every time the coolant lines need to be undone. That engine has never seen anything besides normal green stuff and distilled water after coming back from being tanked at the machine shop with all new radiator, hoses, etc. Give it two months in and the fluid is all nice and rusty.

      theedrstrangelove My dear fellow car guys...distilled water tends to be more acidic. What makes for alkaline water is positively charged calcium, magnesium and a bit of potassium among other minerals in trace amounts. So distilled or not...water is still corrosive. I hope this helps guys.

    Update to my original comment in 2017. I originally used Evans along with StopLeak as a stop gap on my leaky heater core. I drove it for nearly two years before replacing my heater core. I was able to reuse the Evans and it's in there to this day. It's just a good safety precaution in an older vehicle - no need to put extra pressure on old hoses.

    I tried this in my off road motorcycle that does not have a radiator fan, and it does what it says. The draw back for me was that your oil temp and water temp run at close to the same temperature, and I was concerned about my engine lubrication and longevity running the oil this hot, up to (380f). In a vehicle with a radiator fan, I think it would work great.

    I like how Jay Leno is pretty well off and worth millions and he still says this product is kind of expensive. Nice to see a multi millionaire understand what every day Joe thinks about when they look at price of the products. None of the less, it may cost more but it is does not cost an arm and a leg for the product, not to mention you never have to change it and it is not toxic so no disposable problems. In the long run it is much cheaper to run this stuff.

    10 years... I've been pushed into this direction by the garage who just serviced my car. I use my car a lot, in allsorts of conditions and it's being a bit of a problem. One garage refilled my car with just water! The garage recently added OAT but suggested this (power 180) instead of standard coolant. He also said that any water left after drain off would more than likely evaporate over time, with a flush not really necessary.

    Read the bottle, it ethylene glycol, drink it and die about 2-3 days later from kidney failure.
    A couple of years ago I called Evans & talked to a rep, one thing he said was that it was flammable, he would not expand on it though. My guess would be it's amoulcified with a petroleum product? The only problem (if it's true) would be in an accident opening the cooling system onto the exhaust manifolds.
    One more thought that may be a non issue is with a high RPM engine and no coolant pressure, could that induce more water pump cavitation.

    This was a wonderful video and I will write a product introduction and review for the Door County Cherryland Ford Model 'A' Club tech and news monthly publications. We have about 53 Model 'A's in the club of about 47 or so people. A very active club considering the usual crummy Wisconsin spring and early summer and early fall weather.
    I formally had cooling problems on my 1930 40-B Standard Roadster and so have many other members in the club.
    Even though the cooling system is not pressurized that does not mean the engine will not heat up the 50/50 coolant to a point of blowing the vapors out from under the radiator cap and shooting out of the overflow tube.
    We are turning the water to a vapor ... with waterless Evans coolant it is not possible to boil over.
    There are no thermostats in the Model 'A's and inserting an industrial thermometer in the coolant in the top of the radiator of a idling engine shows 160 deg F consistently when all things are working as they should.
    The cooling capacity of an 'A' is 3 gallons ... " if you can't cool it with two and a half gallons, you will not cool it with three gallons." Typically we let the non pressurized system seek it's own level and what ever pees out of the overflow tube, pees out. Eventually a normal and constant level will be established.
    This product sounds perfect for our 87+ year old Fords that only are driven occasionally. ... Thanks again for the heads up. Craig Weis, Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.

    On their website they say the freezing point is -40 (F or C, scales cross over at that point). I think that's about the same as ethylene glycol mixed with water.
    I find this topic intriguing, though it would be helpful to see more detail as to what it is, exactly. Although other auto systems have improved reliability over the past years, cooling system problems are still very common. I suspect the culprit is water....

  • @spelunkerd
    @spelunkerd 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Freezing point is -40 F. Product is concentrated (?69%) ethylene glycol mixed with an additive to protect animals and humans who are goofy enough to drink it, and unknown other chemicals. Flammable. On the website they mention installing a 215 deg thermostat for diesel, though I don't know if gasoline engines need a different thermostat. You won't get the plateau of temp from boiling that is seen with water, but you also won't get the pressure spike. No plateau=?risk of overheating?

    I wish I found this product earlier on! I had a bad oil cooler leaking oil into coolant, and swollen up all the rubber stuff. One day, the rubber seal on the expansion tank cap decided to go, coolant temperature suddenly shoots up and after I stopped the car, after boil so bad that the ca just let go, and blowing lots of steam out. Now I really have to worry about whether I have damaged the head gasket! If I had this product in, I wouldn't have this issue at all!

    a neat tip for BMW owners, especially e36/e39/e38/e46 owners;
    use this stuff, and get a low pressure expansion tank cap, like a 1.2 bar cap from german auto solutions.
    these systems are pressurized far past what they need to be, and it causes lots of wear on the cheap plastic cooling system components. switching to this reduces that problem quite a bit

    Which should I use in my 1920 Model T?

  • @evanscooling
    @evanscooling 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    We are comfortable operating in -40 degree weather, but have taken the coolant below -60F without it freezing. It contracts when cold, so it won't burst radiators. All glycol based coolants are combustible; the conditions needed to create fire are rare. It's a "gentle" flame like an alcohol fire and can be blown out. A water based anti-freeze fire is often worse because the pressure behind the leak will continue to feed a fire. T-stat mod is only for fuel savings (diesels) not necessary.

    the reason that car companies wont bother to use this product is simple. they know their cars will not last 100k miles without some part failing in the cooling system. gaskets, plastic parts, rubber parts, hose clamps, etc. every car i currently own, 1 truck, and 1 turbo audi and 1 v8 audi, have at least 1 coolant leak every year. the 1.8t audi has many a year, as i keep having to replace plastic coolant flanges due to cracking and stuff. that is their reason, their poor craftsmanship of the engine cooling parts prevents them from wanting to spend more money when spending more money would have given plastic parts made of metal that would last a lifetime instead of plastic which as we all know doesnt last long especially when its holding hot coolant or near a hot engine.

    This is undoubtedly an amazing product & step forward for cars, but I've a problem. Just bought a relatively modern car, which has had this installed, owner said the fans run more than usual, not a problem I thought, but it is. The fans must have been on so much they've become very noisy and will most likely need replacing, but even if I do that, the new ones will come on more than normal, and with the related noise. Anyone know what to do, I may have to remove it otherwise, shame!

    I didn’t realize there was so much debate over what type of coolant to use in antique cars! 😅. What should I use in a 1936 Chrysler motor that I had rebuilt? Someone recommended just distilled water with some (not sure how much) rubbing alcohol and an anti-corrosive additive. But now I’m not sure! 🤔😕

    Whats the heat capacity compared to water? Can it cool an idleing engine as well as water? How hot will my engine get before the tempeture delta between the air and radiator can dissapate the btu put out by the engine? These are things we need to know!

    Wonder if '17 Ford eco- boost would benefit from EVANS or void the warranty.
    Evans might be worth the extra $ considering replacing corroded parts ( especially heater cores) are expensive .

  • @redneckgearheadgarage495

    Love this stuff! If you have a problem with your cooling system this could very well prevent severe engine damage. In a system with 50/50 coolant the boiling temp is much lower and once your coolant starts to boil the heat removing property is greatly diminished. With Evans the boiling temp is much higher meaning it is still pulling some heat out when the 50/50 would be boiling. Buying you precious time to realize there is a problem and maybe get off the road safely.

    Is there any way to talking Jay and his guys into building a performance Ford 300 inline 6? There is quite a bit of interest in these motors, but very few have truly gone all out and published their results (dyno proven). Either a naturally aspirated monster torque motor or a twin turbo version. It would be nice to see what you guys could come up with. thanks

    The coolant pump would be fine because it's not the type that would let liquid compression stop it. It will turn fine. We've taken the coolant to -60F without evidence of it freezing. At these temperatures, you're going to have trouble with oil viscosity and fuel gelling (diesel) so you'd have to have a heat source to start anyway. We've had good feedback from the snowmobile industry.
