The reason this drama is considered a fail when it first came out is because the portrayal of emperor is disgusting and made a lot of people stop watching. Don't know if the real emperor is like that or not but the production value is high. People also criticize the guy's acting, always the same emotion looking at the floor. It also unfortunately came out same time with the other drama Yanxi Palace that gain massive popularity and the emperor at that drama is likeable despite also a jerk.
Wonder if that's on the actor or the director. It might have been a style choice that because he thinks he's above others he never truly bothers to look at them if he doesn't have to. Intentional or not though, he just kinda comes off as having gone to the Kristen Stewart/Bella Swan style of emoting. The writing does have some moments where he doesn't suck (like how he handles Ruyi's treacherous maid) but when he does it's ball to wall.

I loved this Emperor better in the Story of Yanxi Palace... Sure Ruyi was evil in that one but that version of him was alot better... but I definitely love this version of the Queen more.
I'm pretty sure it's the same emperor and people involved historically. But then romances are different. In Yanxi Palace the Ruyi character is vindictive and manipulative. He had a loving and respectful relationship with the first queen and then a "contented" one with the second but his true love in this version was Wei Ying Luo who, in real life, was his 3rd empress.
I like the emperor in this one more than Yanxi Palace, because this one portrayed Qianlong like an actual emperor. Qianlong is know for his lust for women, he have a lot of concubines, wives, beside that, he is cynical, and desire for power. Ruyi story plot is actually make sense, because he is a emperor, a true emperor indeed, he act like a emperor, his concubine act like a concubine, not like the one in Yanxi palace. The emperor and the main plot of Yanxi palace is just...a fascinating story that will only exist in some kind of romantic novel. @@duthuylinh Historically speaking both stories are not quite accurate...its hard to say what type of personality he had because the book of records only keep account of main events, laws passed and wars fought, nobody kept account of every conversation the emperor had so we can't really say what he was like, but we can infer that he wasn't a romantic, but then it's rare for an emperor in any era to be so romantically inclined or faithful even, it's part of the job description to have as many male heirs as possible to keep the dynasty going for hundreds of years...it's obvious that the Qianlong emperor mostly cared for his empire which shows in his long reign (ruling even after abdicating to his son), women to him were probably annoyingly convenient...everyone had a role to play and knew that any woman (that wasn't directly related to him) in the forbidden city regardless of station belonged to the emperor, most families sent their daughters for marriage alliance to raise the power of their clans, its all hypocrisy to say that the emperor was heartless when his wives' clans stood to benefit from him..I suppose what I'm saying is that romance had no place in the palace, only politics mattered, the emperor had to keep his court in order and father sons, and his women were required to scheme to be in favour...I preferred yanxi palace atleast it had a sense of humour for a harem drama which this one lacked...this drama only made the female lead stand out, as for the emperor he was a fool from start to finish🙄😒

For me, Yanxi palace is good for entertainment, while Ruyi Love in Royal palace is logical, sad, and excellent in portraying a dark side of an emperor and life in palace.

Indeed the man thinks that since he is the emperor, all woman would give bow down and worship him, but I hate to tell him this, some women might feel that way, but once in a while, there is a strong willed one that will fall for his charm, they only want one man to love, not a man who has concubines and could just use them as.

The reason this drama is considered a fail when it first came out is because the portrayal of emperor is disgusting and made a lot of people stop watching. Don't know if the real emperor is like that or not but the production value is high. People also criticize the guy's acting, always the same emotion looking at the floor. It also unfortunately came out same time with the other drama Yanxi Palace that gain massive popularity and the emperor at that drama is likeable despite also a jerk.
Wonder if that's on the actor or the director. It might have been a style choice that because he thinks he's above others he never truly bothers to look at them if he doesn't have to. Intentional or not though, he just kinda comes off as having gone to the Kristen Stewart/Bella Swan style of emoting.
The writing does have some moments where he doesn't suck (like how he handles Ruyi's treacherous maid) but when he does it's ball to wall.
@@WolvenDragonZ Wallace's acting performance aside as there's not much that can be done when the emperor is written as such an unrepentant trash bag. He's so disgusting and evil that a better acting performance would not save his scenes. Most people can stomach a bit of angst and unfair treatment but he's just so evil towards Ruyi that the show becomes depressing.

From what I understand, the looking at the floor thing seems to happen every time the emperor is disingenuous or when he knows in his core that he is in the wrong (as he is avoiding eye contact).

I loved this Emperor better in the Story of Yanxi Palace... Sure Ruyi was evil in that one but that version of him was alot better... but I definitely love this version of the Queen more.

I'm pretty sure it's the same emperor and people involved historically. But then romances are different. In Yanxi Palace the Ruyi character is vindictive and manipulative. He had a loving and respectful relationship with the first queen and then a "contented" one with the second but his true love in this version was Wei Ying Luo who, in real life, was his 3rd empress.
I like the emperor in this one more than Yanxi Palace, because this one portrayed Qianlong like an actual emperor. Qianlong is know for his lust for women, he have a lot of concubines, wives, beside that, he is cynical, and desire for power. Ruyi story plot is actually make sense, because he is a emperor, a true emperor indeed, he act like a emperor, his concubine act like a concubine, not like the one in Yanxi palace. The emperor and the main plot of Yanxi palace is just...a fascinating story that will only exist in some kind of romantic novel. Imaged somebody act like Ling fei in Yanxi palace in front of the emperor, definitely dies in 3s in real life :)
@@duthuylinh Historically speaking both stories are not quite accurate...its hard to say what type of personality he had because the book of records only keep account of main events, laws passed and wars fought, nobody kept account of every conversation the emperor had so we can't really say what he was like, but we can infer that he wasn't a romantic, but then it's rare for an emperor in any era to be so romantically inclined or faithful even, it's part of the job description to have as many male heirs as possible to keep the dynasty going for hundreds of years...it's obvious that the Qianlong emperor mostly cared for his empire which shows in his long reign (ruling even after abdicating to his son), women to him were probably annoyingly convenient...everyone had a role to play and knew that any woman (that wasn't directly related to him) in the forbidden city regardless of station belonged to the emperor, most families sent their daughters for marriage alliance to raise the power of their clans, its all hypocrisy to say that the emperor was heartless when his wives' clans stood to benefit from him..I suppose what I'm saying is that romance had no place in the palace, only politics mattered, the emperor had to keep his court in order and father sons, and his women were required to scheme to be in favour...I preferred yanxi palace atleast it had a sense of humour for a harem drama which this one lacked...this drama only made the female lead stand out, as for the emperor he was a fool from start to finish🙄😒

With the evidence recorded in history books/draft, consort Ling is not favored, maybe a little, but not so much. Step Empress is deeply favored in the beginning, but after there a mystery that lead to her downfall, there are a lot of rumors, but none of them are true. Qianlong is even more complicated, since he is an emperor, who has a lot of woman (40+ for concubines/wife, but thats only the concubines that has name and tittle), outliving almost all of his child, some of the record show different sides of his but in the end, can we talk about what a emperor he truly is? nah, maybe not. For me, Yanxi palace is good for entertainment, while Ruyi Love in Royal palace is logical, sad, and excellent in portraying a dark side of an emperor and life in palace.
