I always found it interesting that no one was wailing when Ruyi died like when the other empress died. It was so quiet, they were all so soft spoken, much like Ruyi was in her life. Her voice was always so smooth and gentle, even when she was angry.

    • @alicehao1998
      @alicehao1998 3 ปีที่แล้ว +511

I like to think the reason for that is to emphasize the differences between the two empresses. Empress Fucha played the game of the harem, ruthlessly scheming against the consorts and concubines to secure her position and power to the point where when it was her funeral, nobody was actually sad or sincerely mourned her. Ruyi, on the other hand, rose above the corruption of the harem. She sought a harmonious life even within the treacherous inner palace, wanting to help and befriend these women, even Concubine Rong whom the emperor was obsessed with. So when it was her funeral, there was no superficial mourning or crocodile tears. Every tear shed, every sentiment uttered was genuine: women grieving for a lost friend and leader whom they loved, not concubines wailing for an empress because they have to.

I'm glad to see that Ruyi stayed true to herself. I don't blame her for what she did to the emperor at the end. He doesn't deserve a beautiful woman like Ruyi who has a beautiful mind, body, and soul. It's truly his loss at the end where he overlooked his true treasure Ruyi. I truly believe she died of a broken heart and she gave up at the end where she refuse treatments for her illness. If the emperor truly loves her like she loves him, he would have noticed she's was suffering and spent more time with her. Her last words to him was kind and sincere as that was her farewell to him. He was too stupid not to understand her. To see him lives in regrets after she died, it was already too late for him. The part about trying to restore the painting, what the painter said is 100% spot on. No matter how good a painting/painter is, it's what's in the eyes and hearts of those being painted that matters.

When Ruyi asked Rongpei to drink the tea, she asked as a friend. It was completely out of the norm in the royal palace at the time, and it was strictly forbidden for someone like Rongpei to sit with a royal consort -- let alone the Empress -- and drink tea with her. Yet, at the end of her journey, Ruyi saw in Rongpei a loyal friend and confidant, not a servant any more. Rongpei was deeply moved by the simple request. At the end of it all, what matters is not titles, wealth, or power, but genuine, profound, long-lasting human connection that transcends all.

Interesting. The painter was a Jesuit. Divorce is nearly impossible in church and in the very Catholic country of Italy where he was born. At that time. From his perspective though none in the harem really married. Annulment would be the better word. You can’t be married to multiple people. You can’t sleep around when married. Not like that was not done among western leaders of the time. But their issue could not reign. It was open yet hidden. There is not way a woman in the west could in a Catholic predominant country go to the courts and say I want a divorce I don’t love him anymore. There would have been bits of time briefly off and one where they might legally get away from excessive abuse. Not abuse just excessive. Or if they were barren. Or if either cheated.

She genuinely wishes she could sit and chat and drink tea with all of her friends and adversaries, despite everything that happened between them. Notice that at 7:08, when Ruyi listed all the deceased consorts, she listed them by their real names, rather than by their titles. This is to hint that even after so many long years, Ruyi still remembered them, not as consorts who plotted against her and against each other, but ill-fated women who used to be graceful before the competition for power and favor in the harem corrupted them.
And even after many years, she's the only one to remember their true names, showing that despite all the mishaps most of them caused her, they still have a place in her heart. Whereas the Emperor had long forgotten about them...

Yes. One example I can think of is A'ruo who used to serve her when she was still an imperial concubine. A'ruo was once very loyal to her, but betrayed her to climb up ranks. After she became an imperial concubine, she schemed her countless times. Giving poisonous food, putting kerosene to burn her residence, etc.
Later, after the emperor realized A'ruo's wrong doings, he demoted her to a commoner and left her to Ruyi to be punished. Before she sent her to the Cold Palace as punishment, she told her "My heart wouldn't have hurt so much if the one who schemed me like this wasn't you." This is because A'ruo came from Ruyi's maiden home. In this case, you are right that Ruyi remembered all the people not as evil people, but ill-fated people who had been very kind and graceful before competing in the harem.

Zhou Xun, the female protagonist, She convinced the whole team to change the ending of this drama into a different portrait compared to the one in the novel.
That makes the film version is on an extraordinary level.
Her reason why she wanted to change it was, she wants the film to focus on self-value, the nature of life in which its temporariness is underscored.
She said there is no reason for me to commit suicide (according to the original novel) because of having a bad husband. She wants us to treasure ourselves, and learn to accept things come and go naturally.
Zhou Xun's Ruyi is keeping her ethicality, her conscience, and her philosophy unfaded consistently throughout the movie. According to what Empress dowager said to the Emperor, she admired Ruyi so much for her ability of maintaining her integrity despite facing many obstacles and greediness in the palace.

She expressed Ruyi's emotion in the most calming way( except for when she hit her limits when she yelled at emperor and Wei Yanwan) but I can feel every of her extreme emotions in her eyes. Her eyes tells me everything that she feels. Like how can you show your emotions like excitement, sadness, rage, disappointment in such calming way and I can still feel them in such high levels. @@avolution1660 This is a historical drama. I prefer this one to Yanxi because it shows so much more of the true agony it was to be part of the imperial harem. The tone in RRLITP is much more accurate than Yanxi, regarding characters, plot, and how life was in the harem. Ruyi and Yingluo are both very strong female characters, they are just written differently. Ruyi, in no way, was a doormat. She is the only person in the royal family who stayed true to herself, even when love wasn't enough anymore.
The fact of the matter is, Ruyi shows much more of the agony behind love and marriage- Yingluo doesn't have that for me.

Sigh :( as someone else mentioned in another video - she truly was ahead of her times. loving only one man and being loyal to only one while the man loves many others. Her love over time matured in different ways but his love matured in the sense that he began to yearn for others and took her for granted, and used her as the scapegoat over and over.
I'm glad she at least valued her worth at the end. She was a true Empress in my book - sure, to survive the weight of the crown you have to have a certain cunning/smart side to you too, and Ruyi was smart, no doubt. But, she truly never fought back or intentionally harmed someone that was innocent or didn't deserve some sort of retribution. Although her weakness in caring too much or loving too hard worked against her at points, it truly makes her character for me and made me feel along with her. It hurts to see how sweet Hongli and Qingying were in the first half only to take a major downward spiral.
The first time I watched this, I blamed Yanwan so much. But, truly, the one at most blame is none other than the emperor. Almost always he believed others over her, despite knowing her character as they grew up together. She was always the easiest to cast away for "the sake of the empire and harem peace". And, even more upsetting, was that he never truly seemed to believe his faults or errors until it was smacked right in front of his face. Even then, he didn't apologize as he should have - was it because he's the emperor? I guess. Truly interesting to see his hypocrisy grow and grow as the years went on. He may have loved her sincerely and truly as someone should in the beginning, but he truly lost his way and not even someone as loyal and fierce as Ruyi could set him straight, nor could the rest of his harem. She is free, and I believe she was able to pass away with less regrets than Hongli ever could because she loved all that she could even as she saw the distance growing. She remained true to her values at the end, and the respect the rest of the harem has for her shows that in magnitude. Emperor and Empress may be no more, but I hope the young Qingying and Hongli are still there in the afterlife.

I think that plant starting to bloom after the emporer died, was supposed to symbolize them being together again in the afterlife. The plant was a representation of their love, which had died, & neither of them could bring it back to life while they were still on this earth. But the emporer, he wanted to meet her in death, thats why he cut his hair at the end & put it in the box with hers. He wanted to reverse their "divorce" & meet her in the afterlife as husband & wife. Right after he died, the plant finally started to bloom again.

Without words Zhou Xun could portray Ruyi’s whole live, all her struggles and pain Ruyi went through just by eye and facial expression. Although I do not like how the character does not fight back for herself, Zhou Xun’s this single scene makes up for the entire drama plot for me. You know already that something sad will happened and yet you knew the moment you saw the scene where she died peacefully was the moment where Ruyi was freed. 😭💔❤ She never hated any of the harem. She was bitter towards the emperor yes... and yet you know how much she loves the Emperor. 💔

I would rather she her like this than Zhen Huan aka the previous season main lead- she fought for a high position yet had to live with the man whom she regarded disgusting.

Although I cry heavily during this episode and every time I see the clips, I always shed tears when I rewatch this series to see the tenderness Ruyi and the Emperor shared. The nervousness and anticipation during his wife ceremony, when she continually brought him his favorite treats and teas, his excitement when she fell pregnant for the first time. To see it erode over a course of a few seasons when you know the end is bitter. Ruyi loved him fiercely, avenged her Auntie, ran the harem better than first empress, none of this she wanted - but she took it in stride. Tv show or not, an incredibly inspiring character. I’m sure Empress Ula-Nara was as kind as she is being portrayed.

This is Zhou Xun we're talking about. She was considered one of the original "Four Great Flowers" - the four greatest and most superb actresses of China's movie industry back in the 2000s and 2010s. Even among the Flowers, her acting was considered to be the most powerful and to have the most depth. She's basically legendary!
Most of her works are theaterical movies though. Ruyi's Royal is actually the first TV drama she did in years. You can watch "Painted Skin" and "Painted Skin 2" to see her acting in her prime (she's in her 40s by now, but she's still so good).
