There were many small kingdoms along the Himalayas, Mekong River and South China Sea who were fiefs to the Chinese Dynasties. These ruling royals were called 土司 Local Commanders and were hereditary. Most of them were conquered by the British (Wa, Bhutan, Sikkim, etc. ), Americans (Sulu), Japanese (Ryukyu) and Russians (Buryats, Kazakhs, etc) in late 1800's and early 1900's.

One point of this video I agree 100% with, is that there can be no sovereignty without a military to keep others from intrudng upon sovereignty. Also information space is also key to prevent propaganda from outside taking over the minds of the people. But all of these things must get centered on critical thinking to build a cohesive collective in your territory. Fracturing in your society is the fastest way to losing sovereignty and being hoodwinked and ruled by self-serving individuals.

Wa is from the Chinese word 华 which means Chinese or 华人. Just like Huawei telecommunication company 华会 means Chinese also can (do). So Wa State means Chinese State.
Wa region is part of Shan province of Myanmar 🇲🇲 and it is an independent region but part of Myanmar.

However, given the current situation, unlike the unstable government of Myanmar, China will want to unify Taiwan, whether it likes it or not. If so, all hell might break loose. I really hope Xi is patient, but is time on his side?
@Keyboard Emperor That's the irony, isn't it? The Wa people identify with China more than the Han Taiwanese. To be fair, Taiwan still has plenty of Han Taiwanese that identify with China, but as time goes on, such identity may further erode. I can see why Xi wants the unification sooner than later.

In the broader geopolitical landscape, Taiwan is just a pawn, not unlike Ukraine at this point. I hope Tsai won't play the Zelensky hero card, to the detriment of the Taiwan people.

It is like a country within a country. It has own currency, own laws, own army ... It really merits its own hour long documentary video. Maybe there is one out there.

At the north of Wa State is Kokang Region (see map at 3:35), where not only the culture but the race is also Chinese. The emigration of Kokang people dates back to the end of Ming Dynasty 400 years ago. Both the Wa and Kokang resistances may not be eminent now, will be time bombs for Myanmar's governance down the road.
