I've loved the idea of these "dumb" devices, but the cost always kill them for me. We need a chromebook that just has USB-C input and I'd buy the heck out of it, but $350 USD for just a screen/battery/keyboard/trackpad seems steep.
I mean it depends how good the hardware is if it's a nice oled and if the speakers are better I'd say it's worth it considering it's also a hub/ keyboard
Think of it this way: A portable screen with built in battery will cost about $270 and there are not many. But you have to buy a keyboard with touch pad and that's $30, so you are looking at $300. For some an extra $50 which is less than the cost of one AAA game, you get the laptop form factor described in this video, and you only have to charge the Nexdoc, so in theory if your Nexdoc and Steam deck are fully charged, then you only have one wire that connects both items.
For the price why not just get a traditional laptop? Unless you have the deck which is itself capable enough that it doesn't need things like this , it's a waste honestly.
@@shlokshah5379 It's about the upgradeable dream that nexdock sells, the laptop is just a shell, you can upgrade to a steam deck 2 or get a new phone and it will just plug in your setup without any worries. But you have a point, this is not for everyone, I just enjoy the idea that's why I want to make a setup like this.
@@shlokshah5379 You have to upgrade your traditional laptop at one point. No need to do that with the NexDock since it's just a screen, a keyboard, a mousepad, and a power bank all wrapped up in a laptop form factor.
I just got mine last weekend. I wouldn't recommend it if all you plan to use it for is the Steam Deck, unless you are also using the Deck as a PC. I don't think the screen is big enough to bother plugging in to play games, but it's definitely useful for desktop mode. I bought it because I also have a Samsung phone and some raspberry pi based devices it can be used with. Should be good for a server or NAS that doesn't have a dedicated monitor.
Great to see more people talk about the NexDock. I always love the idea of lapdocks in general since you have an external monitor, a keyboard, a mouse, and a power bank all wrapped up in a portable laptop form factor. Plus, you can use this beyond console and smartphone. You can even connect mini PC like Intel NUC and Mac Mini to it without any problem. If there's one thing I'd like to see in future NexDock model, it''ll be battery bypass charging like what ASUS and Sony implement on their ROG Phone and flagship Xperia respectively. That gives you the ability to keep connected to the power supply without keeping the battery charging all the time.
I bought one of these for the Steam Deck, I have never used it because it does not charge the steam deck (or keep the battery from draining) so, as you mentioned, is really cumbersome
I wish the NexDock were better on the trackpad. I have the “Touch” model before the most recent 360 but it uses gesture emulation which is overly sensitive.
Question... Do you think the screen is stiff/sturdy enough to stay up if the deck was mounted to the top using deckmate? That way you wouldn't need a flat surface to rest the deck on. It would almost be like a housing for the deck
Can you fully power/charge both devices at the same time? SD connected to the Nexdock, and power connected to the Nexdock. I bought a similar thing a while ago but it couldn't supply enough power to sustain my Win3 (etc.) and since some handhelds like the Deck only have one port for data and charging, it meant using a separate dock, HDMI to the portable display, and separate power for each. If this can actually get down to a single cable for power, and one to connect the dock, that could be nice.
Didn't think I was going to see a Nexdock video haha. Much appreciated. I already bring mine with me for Samsung Dex with my phone, but I'm looking forward to using it with the Aya Neo 2 or GPD Win 4 once I make my decision there.
Can you try this with an Ayaneo 2? I'm thinking of getting this dock to use on my phone as a laptop as I just get the new version of a Samsung ever couple years anyways. But, if it works really well with the ayaneo 2, I'm sold.
But it only supports 5V1A to charge the device, which is not enough to charge SD while using it, so as you use it, the battery in the SD would deplete, and there is no way to charge it while connecting to the Dock at the same time (not sure if an additional dongle may work)
I just wish there were more tablets with HDMI in... I had a Galaxy Tab S7+ but I sold it cause I had too little use cases for it... If I could plug into it my Switch/Steam deck or PS5 imagine what an incredible AMOLED gaming experience that would be!
I've been using Haloiso and I just don't like KDE. I used to use it exclusively but there was a update along the way that I just don't like how it 'feels'.
I also own the Nexdock, you DO NOT need additional power for the nexdock. An external dock is not needed. The Nexdock has it's own battery to power it's own screen and other functions and can provide some power to the Steam Deck. You won't need an additional charger as you can use your Steam Deck Charger just fine.
Doesnt run at 60 for me unless I put all the details on low and the scaling to ultra performance, but I dont think thats whats happening here. Maybe he tweaked with powertools somehow.
I use mine as a Windows PC! So many TH-cam videos were hating on that idea, but most where only bothering about portable use. Docking it to a monitor and plugging a mouse and keyboard works perfectly! Like I use it without any issues. I look forward to a more powerful Steam Deck so playing on a monitor is a much better experience! Get that 1080p 60fps a lot better. I can just about do it really well on Resident Evil 2 Remake which is pretty awesome!
It might have more utility, but is way more expensive than a combo of all the utility gadgets you can buy separately - wireless K&M, portable screen, USB-C hub with more ports, etc. Unless Nexdock will be able to offer better or comparable value than all these devices, it won't be anything more than a gadtget to watch a youtube video about. I was super into the idea when I first heard about a devbice like that, but it doesn't make any sense at the price of a proper laptop .
Why would someone buy this when you can just buy something like an Nreal Light or a competitor of theirs? It's only $50 more bucks and it's a much better solution, you can use that laying down, etc unlike this. Still, this is nice to have as an option for a very niche need.
Yes, but that cheap laptop will last you 1-3 years max. Something like this can be upgraded when the time comes whenever a new Steam Deck, a new phone, or any new compute unit comes out. Windows laptops in this price range don't have great performance, Chromebook work fine, until they hit EoL and then you have to get another one. Chromebooks also have the disadvantage in that you are limited to what kinds of apps you can run. I do think they can get the price lower with a cheaper plastic build and removing the touchscreen. Might make it more appealing to more people.
Show me a separate portable monitor, keyboard, mouse, USB hub, and battery power for $300 as of the price of NexDock 360 in January 2023. If anything, they end up costing more than the NexDock itself.
Price in Euros, Pounds and Dollars... 349... i.e. no currency conversion on their website. 1$ does not equal 1€ or £1. This kinda dumb non domestic pricing puts people off of buying an item.

Nexdock said that they wouldn't fix it for free because it was just out of their 6 month warranty. They would not let me pay to order a battery because of so called shipping restrictions. They only offered me a discount on a new device but I didn't take it.
