Stealth Wild Camping under a Tiny Tarp in the Rain 🌦️

- For this wild camp in the aftermath of storm Eunice, I gave my tiny tarp a try in the rain. At 1.5m x 2.8m and 260g (excl. pegs & lines) it’s a dinky lil thing, but hard to get enough coverage to keep the rain off entirely, unless you have it really low (very claustrophobic!)
I had a lovely break in the rain at bedtime when the sky cleared and I had a beautiful display of stars, the Big Dipper right over my camp and then watched the moon rise through the trees 🌝✨

I think it was a fox, they sound horrific like that i had one a few metres from camp once making that racket for over an hour it put me into a panic it was so loud and so constant

You won't go wrong with an Osprey rucksack Claire. They might be expensive but they're super comfy and really take the effort out of carrying heavy loads.

Hi! I’m out in my backyard rain testing my new Coleman Skydome 4. 36 hours of rain, no leaks! I got this huge tent hoping my wife would try it. Last week I tested my new Lightfighter 1. It was dry of course. I almost forgot it was nylon, the sag in the wet reminded me!,
At 2am whilst out in the open I half asleep reached out to get a buscuit from my bag and a fox bit into my hand and didn't let go until I was fully awake to let out a few curses. Lesson, cover up your food properly. 👍
I’ve always said that I never feel closer to nature than in the rain. I think it’s the absence of people and the raindrops on my tarp or face. Another lovely excursion!

Try using a large ex agricultural fertiliser bag as a rucksack liner. It can also be used to store your stuff (rucksack etc) outside your shelter at night. Check it for any holes which can be sorted with tiny squares of Duct Tape.
I enjoy your videos but something I've noticed is the ceiling height of the shelters,I was taught to keep the ceiling height as low as possible in cool/cold weather just high enough to shimmy into your space since heat rises and the low ceiling keeps the warmth closest to you,less draft and better rain shelter..enjoy

You need a hex tarp for camping. The 5 sides make the length longer, more tie off points while giving you more side wall protection. Square, rectangle tarp camping is emergency style from the back of your auto. I use a tent 10% of the time now since having a hex shaped camping tarp.

You always seem to make the best of any weather situation. I've only hike-camped a couple times in Rocky Mountain Park in Colorado - all my other camping trips (about 100) have been on canoe river trips where we can carry lots of gear. Having to pack extremely light and efficient is a real challenge.

If you want to further waterproof your dry bags or any bags get some white spirit and some ordinary clear silicone sealant from screwfix or somewhere, mix them about 50 / 50 and paint it on generously, hang up to dry for a couple of days. WIll be very water repellent. Dont panic about the initial change of colour, it will go back to the natural colour after drying

Fantastic nightime shot of the stars through the trees 👍; have experienced something similar out here in one of my local wildlife parks, except it was fireflies and seen from a small rowing boat under the trees; an unforgettable experience in this increasingly concrete and brick world. Claire, that tarp just needs to be a warm dry weather number, Thought it were a Shield bug probably totally harmless as herbivore, You are made of tuff stuff, I would winged in such exposed site. Felt possibly the ridge was to central, only! The tarp set up was inadequate, you stood the hardship, brilliantly. Been following Karen the tall beautifully hipped lass, Like you has got pluck.
Stay safe. Idea Set up a monthly tribe of Amazonians! Would work well. Managed by Girls.. Cheers
PS try to take only what has two or three purposes. Ex steel bowl/pot, lid doubles as a plate, stores dry goods inside and kept together w rubber bands. Only redundancies for ways to make fire (waterproof matches, cotton balls w gasoline/triple antibiotic to start fire in the damp).

Heyy, yeh tarp camping in the rain isn't for everyone, certainly not with a tiny tarp 😄 Thank you, this drone is actually no.3, I lost another one after that first one was lost 😭 No.2 lost connection up on Glyder Fawr and whizzed off 2km into the distance before running out of battery.. sad times. So this one no.3 is second hand. I don't think I'd be the best person to do a drone how-to-fly 😂 I could maybe do a how-NOT-to-fly haha, or a how-to-crash-your-drone. I got the Osprey exos 48 because I was terrible for overpacking so now if it doesn’t fit it stays at home
That noise was a fox having his way with a lady fox. They use our back garden for the same purpose.
Regarding ruck sacks, you should check out Tresspass if you've got one nearby. They have a lot of good value budget gear. I got their own brand 85L ruck sack last year but it's also too heavy. However, they also stock DLS stuff too. I saw one the other day in my local store, a 70L bag retailing at 70 pounds, it looked lighter and is a better design with ample side netting and side access. Worth considering.

I always use a much larger tarp. If stealth camping, I pitch it low to the ground, but still have plenty of space. Like you I like going out in the rain, so a larger tarp also allows you to reconfigure if the weather closes in. Love your videos by the way!

Think you will find it was a Muntjac deer, originally from SE Asia but introduced into the UK. They are about the size of a medium dog and their call is like a dogs bark, so often confused for dog in forests. As you correctly stated the sound in the dark was indeed a fox, they also sometimes sound like screaming babies as well.
Claire, I am really glad that you mentioned choosing kit that blends into the environment. For people that live and work in the countryside, it is rare to see them wearing dayglo colours that so much hiking and camping kit features. In places like the Lake District or North York Moors (which my home turf) where there are many hikers but the sight of hundreds of people on the hills with bright coloured jackets on a weekend really is pollution and spoils the natural beauty of the landscape that those people wanted to enjoy. It is also a place people live as well and I do think walkers need to consider what it is like to live in place where hundreds of people walk every day within yards of their home.
The 'leave no trace' message is one that has sunk in with most people but I would add 'blend in and minimise impact'.
Hey Brian, yep I agree although it takes me time to be able to afford to change my gear to blend in more, it's the direction I want to take even if it has to be gradual. Although, there is the safety aspect in that it's safer in an emergency or rescue situation to be wearing bright colours.. You can't go wrong with the osprey backpack most comfortable thing you'll ever carry on your back, ag65 or 50 they are not exactly the lightest but they are just the best great video can't wait for the next one
I used to take minimal gear on hikes, like tarps and bivvies, so I wouldn't have to carry too much. But I've realised that you spend hours at camp and for the sake of an extra kg or 2, it can make the difference of being really comfortable or a bit miserable.
I'm so glad to have replaced my gear when I did. The price of Cuben Fiber gear has went through the roof now. My 57 liter Zpacks Zero only cost 150 USD when I bought it years ago. It changed my life with its 260 gram weight. Now I can take a tarp and a tent.

Another wonderful vid. You mentioned that you might be looking at a new pack. I think when you look at most 65L - 95L internal frame packs, you will find that hey run around 4-6 pounds. Yes, I am in the U.S. and usually look at things in pounds. If I got your current pack correct (Vango Sherpa 65), it appears to be 2.34 kilograms (about 5.16 pounds). If you look at many 65L packs, I think you are probably looking around 4 pounds (which is about 1.81 kilograms). And, you likely will not have the side pockets that you have on the Vango. So, what features you want could also affect your choice. One instance is Gregory Mountaineering has their Deva series (for women) and the liters are 60, 70 rather than 65, 75 etc.). The Deva 70 comes in 3 sizes extra small, small, and medium. Eah of these sizes affects the volume and weight. For instance, the extra small is 65L and weighs 4.66 pounds/2.11kg. The medium size is about what your Vango is in weight and is 75L. And the maximum carrying load on the Deva series is 55 pounds/24.9 kg. There are also other series (jade, Amber, etc.) by Gregory with different features. Also, I think the Deva series is one where you can change the suspension system. You will want to confirm this if you decide to look at Gregory. Osprey has of course many models as well. For instance, the Aura AG 65 which has three sizes (extra-small, small and medium) and the weight is 4.26-4.42 pounds (about 1.91-2.00 kg). And their Ariel 65 model weighs around 4.8-4.9 pounds (about 2.1-2.2 kg). A third company (and there are of course many more companies) that you might check is Deuter (Germany). They have their Aircontact Lite 60 + 10 SL which weighs about 1.9 kg (1900 grams). Now, their Aircontact 60 + 10 SL weighs about 2.4 kg (2400 grams). Those are just a quick three that I pulled up (that are not ultra-light). Good luck on your search.
a nice lean to with a porch is good in that weather for more height with a small tarp and bigger foot print and you can cove the back wall with twigs and leaves for added camo from the foot path.

I’ve just picked up the Osprey Kestrel 65 which is the blokey version of the Rook. It is by far the best pack I’ve ever owned. The selling feature for me was the ability to unzip the whole front for quick and easy access without farting about through the top cover. And they come in green!

I heard from other toobers about how bad that storm was...I think it came all the way from the S.E U.S.? Where I live in Central U.S. its been unusually dry barely any snow! Have a look at Aarn backpacks. They are a New Zealand product that is substantially different to other systems. I have been using them for years and they are light, durable and very comfortable. Unlike other backpacks they are kind on the knees, hips and back as they allow your back to stay very upright when carrying a load. Cheers
Have you ever tried a military basha/tarp, Claire? I think you would be impressed with the size and quality. I use the British Army DPM Basha Disruptive Pattern Material. Great for stealth camping with the camouflage. You can also get them with the slightly lighter camouflage MTP (Multi-Terrain Pattern) camouflage. Don't be fooled by the cheap civilian copies of these camouflaged tarps, but buy the original military issue. The best quality secondhand ones will have a grade listing of 1. I have two and they are also great for ground sheets or can be joined together to create a bigger shelter. Enjoyed your videos. Happy wild camping! :)

Hi. Just watched a Paul Messner video and a top tip he used for camp cooking was that he used baking parchment in his frying pan! He cooked ribeye and fried eggs, he also fried bacon on it too!
He just placed the parchment in his pan (this acted like a non stick coating) put a little oil on top of the parchment and away he went. Worked a treat! it even charred the bacon 😀

Good videos, I like what you are doing. One tip, only get the kit out you need, anything that's not in use should go back into your bergen. It's let likely to get lost/damaged.

It was actually amazing, most of the videos of men i see on youtube is when they are in rain and survival situations, or they just show you how to survive or make a fire while raining. Here you don't have it, you just have simple camping without making fire or any decent shelter. The food is there, and she has also bottled water. Some commercial about dry bag in meantime and everything is fine, no danger, no helpful survival information, just chill. I like it.
