    Take Mirage for the kind of car it was designed to be and the kind of car it is. Mirage gets hate for all the wrong reasons. It is an inexpensive, reliable and economic car with a good equipment package for the class of car it is. It is not a sports car. It is not a luxury car. It is not the family truckster. It is a sub-compact economy car that is safe, reliable, well equipped (for it's class), carries an excellent warrantee and will get you where you need to go without drama.

    Drove one as a rental in the Rockies at 6k elevation and up. That 13 second 0-60 time at sea level elevation turns into like 20 seconds at 6k; slight incline (3% or so) turns it into half a minute. Definitely a good car for those who have too many speeding tickets and need to chill out.

    My 2014 Mirage G4 is basic as a car can get but it sure as hell reliable, got through a flood knee level and is still kicking like a champ. I'm all for practicability as long as it gets me from point A-Z.

      If you drive through deep water you are going to burn out the electrical component of your engine
      Get it checked out to make sure engine is ok otherwise you could be sitting on a timebomb and the engine could blow out.
      And that gos for any car not just this model.
      You are right
      This is a solid car for the money

    Before I bought a 2021 Mirage ES CVT, I had a 2014 Mirage DE CVT that had only 74HP, 4 less than all current Mirages now. With that said I had no issues ever merging onto the highway off short on-ramps. I mean just think about big Mack trucks merging, it takes them a bit longer to get up to speed too and they have no issues. I've never had any issues going with the flow of traffic either on the highway, if anything I'm still doing 75mph on avg like I always have. Reviewers who say this is strictly a city car and can't handle American highways is total bullshit. I've done multiple 600 plus mile road trips in my Mirages and its no issue at all. Sure the interior is going to have a higher decibel level than say a Mercedes but its nothing you'd even notice after a day of driving it. It's also nothing your stock speakers can't handle either. The Mirage is perfect for city driving and perfectly adequate for highway driving as well.

      I owned a 2014 ES CVT. I loved it overall, but I won't lie it was woefully slow without revving the hell out of the little engine, which I don't like to do to my cars. The car excelled in urban driving where tight parking situations and tight u-turns are no challenge for the Mirage. Outside of that, the handling was sloppy and cumbersome at faster speeds and the engine definitely struggled to keep up with traffic. I always felt like I was in people's way when taking off from red lights with cars behind me. Sure you can do 75. It will get there eventually, but God forbid you need a burst of speed to merge safely because it's not happening. For the 4yrs I owned my Mirage, I found myself taking alternate routes to stay off the interstate and relying more on my brakes than throttle when merging. It's a happier car the slower you drive it.

      @@palebeachbum The 3A92 engine has been in continuous production since 2003, it's timing chained and proven. 3k rpms isn't stressing it out at all. Besides doing 70mph I'm usually around 2500 rpms.
      It's funny how we had the exact same car but have 2 different opinions on the ability of its powertrain. I base my experiences after doing 3k Uber rides/30k miles in 5 months in my Mirage. I simply never had any issues keeping up or merging, granted my heavy foot dropped my hwy mpg to like 37.

      Yep. I've driven to San Diego, Flagstaff AZ, Las Vegas etc. It costs me about $25-$30 to fill my tank (that's with the rising gas prices). Previously about $15 filled it.

    • @palebeachbum
      @palebeachbum 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kylemas2005 3,000rpm in my Mirage didn't cut it for the flow of traffic where I live. The only way you're keeping up with traffic who have 2-4 times the power is if you're pushing your engine a hell of a lot harder than them. Puttering around on city streets at 30-35mph, it was perfectly fine. Going from 0-45+mph was a butt-clenching experience in heavy traffic while getting tailgated, honked at, and passed like I was standing still and the little Mirage was screaming "I'M TRYING!" LOL

      I do gig work in one of the most dangerous cities to drive both on the highway and the city streets, Atlanta.
      People drive like maniacs here going 15 over 70 mph or 15 over 35 mph is the norm here. Police highway presence is lacking. We also have short on-ramps which sucks but I've never felt like I was endangered at all. The Mirage is more than up for it. If it's a really short on-ramp and I need a turbo boost, I'll just momentarily cut off the AC and put it in "Ds" sport mode. This helps if I really need it, which I don't thank god.

      Probably better off to get a used Corolla, Civic, or Toyota Prius. All of them will give you about the same fuel economy, a bigger and more comfortable interior. Probably safer although I haven't seen the crash statistics on this car. Toyota Prius is going to get you high 40s to low 50s. Hatchback with a lot more cargo and a back seat that actually has a room for people in it. I've got a 2008 Prius myself I use it for rideshare and door dash.. she's got 394,000 mi on her, still gives me 45 - 47 MPG.
      If you can get a great deal on the Mitsubishi, you probably be best to go with the manual transmission. CVT transmissions generally aren't that robust. The ones from Nissan are pretty terrible as far as long-term reliability. Don't know for sure on the mitsubishi but I probably wouldn't bet on it.

    • @edgaryzen4925
      @edgaryzen4925 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      To add some pointer, $3k OEM HV battery replacement is too costly to repair which negate the fuel savings and the A/C system wasn't worth repairing as the value of the Prius is already at the bottom of the depreciating curve and it's 15 years old. Why spend alot of $ that nearly equal to the value of the car to correct someone's problem if I don't have to? That's led me to sell it and I'm very thankful.
      Idk about you but used car and new car deals are not a fair comparison anyways.

    Excellent review of a simple machine! The way gas prices are rising there's nothing to be shameful about in driving such a vehicle during these difficult times. My question: upon purchasing the top of the line G4 do you think I could have a superior high powered sound system, with subwoofer, installed into it? I ask because the standard Mitsu audio system is accessed through the vehicle's touch screen. The standard speakers seem to be lacking and the Black Edition has 6 speakers probably of the same poor quality. Adding a new system may be a hassle. Whatcha think? Many thanks, mate. 👍✌♐

Considering it's gone up a lot since 2014, I can't fathom spending $19k on this car, even if it's nicely equipped. It no longer smart to compare pre COVID deal to current deal otherwise he or she would has to wait indefinitely. Is that smart? no since there’s always someone needing a car. It is what it is.
      I always suggest someone to buy new Mirages nowadays but because these Mirages are less popular compare to Corolla Civix and other mainstream cars, I am certain the used one can be had for much better deal, just depends on the price, condition, and ownership history.

    I really don't like the Trim way of selling options. I would like the Lane Departure Autonomy but I absolutely do not want more expensive tires. I also suspect the price for the automatic subsidizes the low price of the 5-speed which is unfortunate.

    This is a great value, especially if you can score a deal and pay 13-14K for a base ES CVT. If I had to pay full MSRP for a ES CVT and end up paying close to 20K including taxes, fees etc. then I would rather just buy a base Civic/Corolla instead.

      @@braetonwilson4296 who said I am? That beside the point.
      My assessment was based on what is happening right now and you know that. Nobody knows when the chip shortage will end. Dave Ramsey predicted the shortage to last for 4-7 months last year and turns out that his prediction was wrong. I believed him! You and I wish for the old days of car market to return for more discounts and choices but that's not happening now (and dealers DONT want that old days coming back)
      You have to remember that subcompact sedan is not popular enough to be sold for the masses where dealers are simply sticking to MSRP because they KNOW someone else beside you NEEDS a car (versus overpaying a used overly inflated car) and there aren't many sedans in stock nor many Mitsubishi dealers across the country (310 I think versus mainstream brand obviously). If you can drive a stick, then it's even better as you have a little bit of leverage in negotiation, that is if you can do do at the dealership.
      Plus, 78 horsepower vehicle is not for everyone hence a test drive is strongly encouraged.
      So I guess it depends on your priorities ie needs and budget? The G4 and hatchback are the $15k car and incomparable to mainstream compact sedan. The, Corolla, Civic, Sentra for instances are one segment up in the range of $22k-29k) and most dealers don't discount them right now, it worth the wait as you have choices.
      Note that MSRP is not a bad price to pay for.

      @@braetonwilson4296 same here especially if can afford to wait. I feel bad for those who cannot. Brand new car price keep going up and subcompact car is no longer profitable to those auto companies.
      I want to wait but because I want a manual transmission on a cheap, I NEED to jump on it NOW. MITSUBISHI can just simply discontinue that transmission option and raise the price next year to $1k add to current MSRP thanks to inflation. I don't want to lose any leverage now 🙂

      Ya but the Chevy spark is harder to work on and is a Korean car that’s rebadged. A mirage is super easy to service, especially the cvt. The cvt in the spark is harder to work on and change the fluid. And you would have to be a fool to buy a Kia or a Hyundai.
