The end of the old man shook me a lot. I work with old people, and one of my patients had dementia and was very scared of the dark and when night was coming. Each time I went to see her, I promised her I would return the next morning, even if it wasn't me but another of my coworkers. And one evening, she held my hand and told me, " You always say it will be you next morning, but it's never you." Dementia doesn't mean people don't realise, it's like an in and out.

Ji yeong attraction (in my opinion romantic atraction, but you can consider it to be platonic or just a curious atraction or whatever you want) for sae byeok was so well done with so little time.
From their little screentime, i felt the tension instantly in their first interactions
I also felt sae byeok walls breaking down slowly when in the presence of ji yeong
Im so hurt even almost 4 years after..definitly did not get over it
I wish they introduced their storyline sooner but oh well, I guess it did not have the space for it with such little episodes

I had to laugh a little when you kept wanting to know more about the guys in pink. Originally, the whole plot line of the policeman wasn't even supposed to be in the show. I'm glad they added it, giving us at least some more info than if it was just from the contestants' POV.

didn't know that actually, when i first watched squid game it felt so important to uncover the truths behind it, that it for me atleast, felt like the main story plot line.

@@Timerin It surprised me when I heard about it! It makes the experience a lot more rounded.

The only thing I identify with Sang Woo on is, what wouldn't you do for your mother?
I think it's a great trick of the writing that people forget he's doing it for his mom, not himself.
Before the games, he was in the bathtub about to off himself, before the games reminded him he could save his mom.

Facts. I loved how it progressed in the last episode as well

so some stuff sorta gets lost in translation for the subs (both in "english" and "english CC"), mostly cuz we don't have honorifics in english the way korean does, so there's no english equivalent for a lot of things. so i just wanted to share a bit.
when ali first met sangwoo, he called him "sajangnim". the literal translation of this means "boss/president", but it can be used for other people too. for example, when you go to a restaurant in korea, you could call the owner "sajangnim" (or if you don't know who the owner is but wanna play it safe, you could also call any worker "sajangnim" too). sometimes, even workers will refer to their customers as "sajangnim" to be extra polite too. you can also call a person (usually a man) "sajangnim" when you don't know them but you wanna be polite when referring to them.
ali speaks really politely in korean and deep bows often (the lower you bow, the more respectful). there are different levels of formality in korean, and the same sentence can be said several different ways depending on who you are talking to, and the level of respect you want to give them. you speak to people differently depending on if you are older, younger, same age, close or not close, and also social ranking (for example a younger coworker who has been at your company longer than you have or is "above" you).
ali speaks the way he does for many reasons. of course, he wants to be polite in a foreign country and avoid misunderstandings (if you speak "improperly" to the wrong person, they might get offended or angry at you), but a lot of times immigrants are looked down on (everywhere around the world) and are treated poorly (as you see minyeo do to him) so it's kind of a way to protect himself. of course, not everyone is gonna be that way. none of the people in his group treated him badly for being a foreigner, but in his eyes, you can never be too sure or get too comfortable.
sangwoo doesn't really like that ali calls him "sajangnim", so he tells ali that he can call him "hyung". "hyung" means older brother (when said by another guy), but you don't have to be actual brothers, it can be said to an older guy who you are close to. if you listen closely, sangwoo also refers to gihun as "hyung" since they are close too. so for ali, this was kind of a big thing since it sorta brought down some barriers and meant he could get a little more comfortable with him. ali probably saw sangwoo as the person he could trust the most and considered him the person he was closest to in the games.

Yeah I'm half-korean so I don't understand all of it but there's a LOT that is mistranslated even in normal speaking. My favorite though is when he says "we're gganbu that means we share everything" when really he says "we're gganbu, there's no such thing as "mine" or "yours"

Ive seen other people make comments on ither reactions that they die the way we see them outside of the games. That Ali "betrayed his boss" so he was betrayed and got killed. I think thats bullshit, Ali died the way he lived- being taken advantage of. Ali's character is a commentary on how immigrants tend to get treated. They get taken advantage of. Low wages, shady employer's with unsafe work conditions (probably how he lost his fingers). Language barriers add to them being taken advantage of and seen as less than. Some places have messed up systems in place to basically trap immigrants in the country and work them like slaves. It's insane.

just a minor correction on your title card - Gganbu is episode 6, not 5. Everyone who's seen this show has the number 6 burned into their brains lol. Great reaction, like many of the comments here, really appreciate you getting all the details and character motivations correct. For a first react type content, especially in a foreign language, that's really hard to do!
