I love that all of the characters have very unique personalities and even phobias. We need more shows that don’t treat the audience like idiots and write actually complex characters, stories, and of course awesome facts
Fun fact wearing an eyepatch over a functional eye is likely historically accurate with the most likely theory’s we have using pirate and raiders logs and general educated guesses, it’s because the bellow deck of a ship was really dark most of the time so a captain would wear an eye patch over one eye and then swap the sides over so their eye that is already adjusted to the dark was out making it so they were able to adjust on the fly for anything!
@@Sasha-zw9ss which would be especially funny, because he'd likely be prescribed wearing an eyepatch over his good eye to strengthen the bad one! (depending what the problem was) so his doctor/optomitrist could see him wearing his prescribed eyepatch wrong and be like T-T "WHY"
That's very interesting My personal head cannon is that quasi actually has kittens That's why he's on babysitting duty most of the time because even though his kids are somewhat grown he's the only one who is an actual parent and the reason he was an eye patch is one of his kittens actually needs one so he wears it so it doesn't feel alone and he keeps it right in it to remind him of them i don't know I just really like parent cozy I just find that so adorable
Me and my sister did this thing last year where we would put on octonauts on Netflix and mute it so we could make the characters say whatever and my sister was quasi and said “SHELLINGTON I FOUND YOUR ONLYFANS”
Hearing that Peso isn’t Latino in the British dub was distressing. One of the reasons he’s my favorite character is because he reminds me of my dad who happens to be a Latino doctor. (My dad and I used to watch Octonauts together, so the similarity was especially obvious to me.)

Me and my partner legitimately theorized that the Octopod had some unexplained device that somehow enhances the intelligence of every creature in the vicinity, granting them sapience completely seamlessly. This fell apart with the spin-off, but we were very proud of it because it explained so much about this cartoon. We're also positive that that green bunny is a stoner who builds elaborate submersibles while high af on some dank carroty cush. This one has yet to be disproved.
30:51 headcanon: the reason why he was ok before was because he felt more comfortable knowing that he could get out of that tight place or better yet, he was with his crew and that they had his back

Honstly, Shellington's family is the most adorable thing about Octonauts. Anytime Shellington, Periwinkle, Pearl, or the vegimals are on screen, you have to repress a squeal
Fun fact about meomi (the guys who designed the octonauts) They also are responsible for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic mascots whom are absolutely adorable and are considered some of the best Olympic mascots out there
Ah octonauts. I half- forgot this show existed, But thanks to them, got a love of the ocean, and now I work at an aquarium. So technically, Octonauts helped me get a job.
Give the creators credit for having the ability to turn some of the most nightmare inducing sea creatures into adorable friends. Like the long arm squid.
Honestly I don't really get the long I squid most of them I get to even though exception to the cookie cutter shark i don't find a lot of the sea creatures scary i truly don't understand the long arm squared especially since an alternate name is the T-posing squid It's just a silly little guy doing a silly little tea posing show the pictures a little early but the actual animal isn't
Also, in most shows they save prey animals and they say they did good but all they were doing is starving the predators. But I love how they have fish biscuits witch are used to feed predators without harming the fish.

I searched ao3 and wattpad for octonauts fanfics. 😅 Anyways I love your theories and your content. ❤❤❤
37:03 here's a "fun" fact, depending on your definition, but while penguins don't have teeth in the traditinal sense, their mouths are full of razor sharp spikes that serve a similar function, including on their tongues. Because nature is horrifying sometimes.
I was a soprano, prized in my high school choir, selected to sing the highest of notes, and even the notes I hit in my long teenage history were not higher than the octave I hit just now when I said, "Athena P is doing OCTONAUTS?!"
Well, it's implied that Barnacles is less afraid of tight spaces in general and more nervous about being in tunnels specifically, so maybe I can forgive that. As an aside, Shellington gets called "Swimmington" at one point lol. And Ryla does appear in Above & Beyond from time to time
Shellington has always been my favorite, both because he is a scientist and because my favorite animals are otters. BUT fun fact about otters, mother otters are only able to care for one pup at a time, and if they happen to have twins, they will just straight up abandon one of them. I think this kind of contributes to the idea that Shellington joined the octonauts because he felt like he couldn't do his part for the environment, because if you have a pup that literally cannot live or contribute, then you would probably choose the one that could like... actually live/survive.
Oof... My favorite is also Shellington, I grew a fondness for him when I made him a story party member on my Miitopia file (I picked Laid-back for him and I only found out later it wasn't actually fitting, but I kinda like this version of Shellington i created (mainly because I'll be honest he feels bland in early episodes)
19:55 Oh shit Peso’s related to those bastards. For those who have no idea what I’m talking about Adelies are the horniest animals alive, they will force themselves on injured females, babies that have fallen out of the nest, corpses, the ground itself, hell, researchers have found sticking a females severed head on a stick with stickers for eyes was enough to get an male Adeli in the mode.
Weren't they dicks in the episode too? Like the children ran away in the middle of the blizzard even after receiving their pebbles. I haven't watched the episode since I was like 7 though
Octonauts was so big for all us autistic kids, but my parents loved it because were Australian, so like, learning to swim at 1 and put in waves where tourists die by five. Taught us to respect the ocean, and treat its creatures with a healthy fear. When captain barnacle got stung by a jellyfish, I learnt to avoid jellyfish at all costs, a lesson that was beneficial when I stumbled across a box jellyfish while running around rock pools. Those things are deadly, but I was safe- I didn’t cover it in sand because I’m not a monster and I backed away carefully. Also it made me get a special interest in sharks (how dare you call the great whale shark a whale) and memorise like every shark ever. A marine biologist came to a book festival once with a port Jackson shark egg,,, she was playing this game of ‘guess what this is’ and it was clearly supposed to be the impossible question, but I, 4 years old and autistic af, confidently answered and talked about how the corkscrew is used to keep them in place and how cool it is that sharks give birth to live young and lay eggs and the marine biologist looked at me like I had grown horns lmao. Apparently I was the first person who wasn’t a marine biologist to know that she’d met. Anyway yeah octonauts. Also I’m sorry but British peso is my childhood and the idea of clips from this video having American accents is genuinely making me cry a little I wish I was kidding. But I’ll watch because your comments are interesting. Also sharks are so cool! They’re awesome! I used to have 10 little floaty sharks that were a bunch of species and I would take them down to the section of the river that meets the sea and go up to the kite surfers and explain them to them before getting scared and running back to this rock where I would lay them out by different traits and resort them.
Man, time for 45 minutes of laying in my bed, watching a video about one of my favorite childhood shows, and wondering where all the time has gone since my innocent youth. Anyways, while I’m here, may I suggest Wild Kratts?

I am just here to say this is the show I first remember staying all night watching. Little me watched all the seasons out plus At Least the polar bear special. Dad really walked past the living room and did a double take lol.
You should do a Monster High lore video. Like, for a brand that’s only a little over 10 years old, it’s already rebooted itself thrice and has accumulated a TON of lore. For example, did you know that Draculaura was actually adopted by Dracula during Roman times and he only changed her into a vampire because she was dying of the plague?
My favorite episode was the spook fish one. Peso kept getting scared when the fish in question gave him his name. "What's your name?" "Boo" "AH! You freighted me" "I'm sorry. Didn't mean to scare you." "It's alright. So, what's your name?" "Boo." "AAHH! You did it again!" "I'm sorry" "It's okay, but what's your name?" Boo! Boo! Boo! BOO!! My name is Boo! I'm a spook fish"

I was in the Octonauts fandom as a 1st grader 😭!!! I literally drew a whole ass fan fiction during class once in my composition notebook because I got bored 💀…I wonder how I didn’t get in trouble honestly.
My favorite part is all of their characters in general. Captain Barnacle's fear of small spaces from a traumatic experience as a kid. Peso's kind spirit and his experience helping a baby octopus/squid find it's way home (and his family). Kwazi's energy and family dynamic. And I can't think of any more but you get the point. I like the characters.
hearing the "explore! rescue! protect!" from the intro gave me SO MUCH nostalgia also seeing the toy at 16:24 reminded me of when I had octonauts toys as a kid
Yeah me too, I remember for some reason the only merch I ever got was the toys mostly because they were atleast somewhat functional and overall seemed interesting.
Hi yes at 16:40, was I the only one who heard Athena say twink instead of Tweak? Like I heard it, had to run it back, and then repeated said process 10 more times.
I think the fact that they’re constantly escaping death-defying situations in an otherwise low stakes series explains a LOT about my taste in media now lmao
Octonauts is genuinely a good show, I watched it for years as a child and I still occasionally watch episodes today with my young siblings. This show really taught me things about friendship, marine life, and how to better help the ocean. It’s just so great. Also, as a person, I’m literally just Peso. Like, there is no freaking difference. Except the whole, him being a penguin thing. I wish I was a penguin.
I used to watch this religiously as a kid. The one with Calico Jack had my jaw *dropped* when we find out he's alive. Also, I always wanted to eat the Vegimal's kelp cakes [I think that's what they're called] and I still do.
I have heard of cone snails because I was warned of them when snorkeling the Caribbean. Yes they are real, yes they are terrifying, and yes, the venom is (while not too likely) potentially fatal. Sleep well! :)
The Gup Z instantly became my favorite Gup when I realized it was both Power Rangers and Ultraman reference while ALSO giving off P.R.A.W.N. Suit vibes
I completely forgot Octonauts for the past few years and right after seeing this thumbnail I remembered years of my childhood that have been forgotten.
Omg this show along with Little Einsteins and Wild Kratts taught me so many random facts that would have no impact on my life but it was always so fun to hear a song or see an animal and think to myself “I know so much about that 😌”
I feel like somehow I was watching the UK dub as a kid. And I live in the US. I was babysitting my nephew the other day, turned on octonauts to entertain him, and I was COMPLETELY caught off guard by Peso's US voice. Also, "His name is Peso, not Pound" Had me dying on the floor for the past hour
Octonauts has been a gem in my childhood and I still love it to this day. The team dynamics, learning about creatures I never knew existed and the creature reports about them too. I must say I do enjoy Above and Beyond more than most because, despite differences in field operations, I'm the biggest sucker for animal stuff so the Octo-reports grew on me. The singing is good, the rhymes are much better, and let's note that they mostly cover animals, but others may include places or phenomenons so all Octo-reports cover natural presences. The new flavor to the report was a win for me. And lastly I am SO glad you agree with me that the US dub is superior. I grew up with the US dub and Peso and Dashi's US voices fit their personalities way better. Thanks for shining some light on this marine biology masterpiece that sheds light on nature by sea, by land, or by air.
I remember in middle school, my math teacher put on an octonauts for break, and every in the class was OBSESSED with it. Especially “the little turnip rabbit.” As they call him. Their obsession lasted for the rest of the year. Unfortunately, I was out that day, but I watched when I was little, so at least I knew what it was.
I remember mishearing the GUP-C and GUP-E, so for a while they were the Gup-See and Gup-Ees respectively. But I do know what the humuhumunukunukuapua'a is because of this show, and how to properly pronounce it. Thanks, Octonauts.
Fun Fact: Many pirates who wore eye patches used them to keep one of their eyes adjusted to the dark when they were out in the bright sun because the inside of their ship’s were pretty dim
I can’t tell you just how invested I was in Octonauts in high school watching it with my little brother (10 years apart) and good lord it is soooooooo needlessly good with characters all incredibly likable even if they may be one note-ish. Like, the only children’s show I’ve ever seen that didn’t make me want to blow my brains out with a cast that all are on such good terms with each other.
36:11 I think the implication here is supposed to be that the fish biscuits are vegetarian, but they’re _so delicious_ that even predators love them. Man, this and Wild Kratts were my crack as a kid. (Just saying, Wild Kratts lore video would be great) Like, they’re probably what inspired my desire to study the ocean.
Octonauts frickin slaps, I love how it gets kids interested in undersea life in a way that's legit awesome and easy to connect to real world practical skills. Some of the younger swim team kids at my pool even LARP octonauts with each other before practice and it's so cute.
This show actually raised me. Made me as autistic as I am today. I was recently tested and got the 99% in naming animals because of this show. It’s so amazing to me and the lore is wild to me. Also I think they made Peso Hispanic in the American version because they wanted to give them all different accents due to where their species is more commonly found. And no one lives in antártica. People live in South America though and have penguins and its belived he may be a penguin from south americas though it is not specified. Like I said. This show shows my autism

My headcanon is that the covered eye is just massively weaker, and he refuses to wear any vision correction.

Hearing that Peso isn’t Latino in the British dub was distressing. One of the reasons he’s my favorite character is because he reminds me of my dad who happens to be a Latino doctor. (My dad and I used to watch Octonauts together, so the similarity was especially obvious to me.)
Awww
I mean, he was literally a Chilean species of penguin that is named Peso. It just doesn't make sense to give him anything but a latin american accent.
I mean he can be ethnically latino and still have grown up in Britain! Accent =/= ethnicity!

Headcannon: Have I watched any of this show since I was a kid? No. But if he was always with someone when he was in the tight spaces, maybe that helped him through it? And when he was alone, it brings him back to the idea he would possibly die alone?

Me and my partner legitimately theorized that the Octopod had some unexplained device that somehow enhances the intelligence of every creature in the vicinity, granting them sapience completely seamlessly.

Oh what the actual fuck

I grew up with the US dub and Peso and Dashi's US voices fit their personalities way better.

i learned how to say it from the song "lance the turtle" in veggietales 💀
I remember some animals that mace me shat myself and one of which was a light up squid thing that kwazzi could not pronounce for the life of him.
THIS IS MY FAVORITE CHILDHOOD SHOW THANK YOU FOR COVERING THIS HOLY SHITTT
36:11 I think the implication here is supposed to be that the fish biscuits are vegetarian, but they’re _so delicious_ that even predators love them.
Man, this and Wild Kratts were my crack as a kid. (Just saying, Wild Kratts lore video would be great) Like, they’re probably what inspired my desire to study the ocean.
Wild Kratts>>>
Octonauts frickin slaps, I love how it gets kids interested in undersea life in a way that's legit awesome and easy to connect to real world practical skills. Some of the younger swim team kids at my pool even LARP octonauts with each other before practice and it's so cute.
Lol I did that a lot as a kid
For some reason, I want to eat octonauts
This show actually raised me. Made me as autistic as I am today. I was recently tested and got the 99% in naming animals because of this show. It’s so amazing to me and the lore is wild to me. Also I think they made Peso Hispanic in the American version because they wanted to give them all different accents due to where their species is more commonly found. And no one lives in antártica. People live in South America though and have penguins and its belived he may be a penguin from south americas though it is not specified. Like I said. This show shows my autism
All the character designs are so cute especially Captain Barnacles hes such a baddie 😌💅
Edit: omg their designs are based off hello kitty? Ofc theyre cute asf they based off the baddie hello kitty!
