  • Based on rider statistics, what gear REALLY makes a difference, and which pieces can you consider skipping? Every little bit helps, but if you're picking between a helmet OR a jacket, we need to talk...

    My rule for jackets is, if I’m not exceeding 50mph I will go without a jacket. Because if I’m just riding slow on city streets, it’s probably because I’m going to a restaurant or something and I don’t want to show up looking like a power ranger covered in sweat.
    Any “fun” ride gets all the gear. Obviously my philosophy may change if I get some crazy road rash at 25mph. Gotta balance safety with actually enjoying the bike. If I wanted to minimize all risk I wouldn’t have a motorcycle.

      Honestly, I couldn’t agree more. The jacket is a default at this point for me, but your logic seems sound.

      I was thrown off the bike at abot 30 mph. I would have probably broken my shoulder if i hadnt had my jacket on.
      With the jacket i only had to keep it still for a month without anything tearing.
      The place on my lower left abdomen where the jacket slid out of the way the rash was bad and needed bandages chsnged twice a day for a week.
      Get a comfortable mesh jacket and you should be fine.
      If money is no object something simple lile the Klim Marrakech looks simple enough, flows a ton of air and has good enough abrasion resistance

      Disagree. Broken bones and shredded skin can happen under 50 MPH. There are jackets like the Marrakesh or Knox brand that are cool to wear and cool off the bike.

    great video! I would reconsider boot choice however, as my recent series on "my crash and recovery" will demonstrate why. I hope to be more outspoken about gear in the future.

      @@MotoGiant I was also about to point him to your channel. The boots he is showing look remarkably like your boots and (sorry this is graphic) the laces seem to have abraded right off and the you were tumbling down the road in a sock. I wear Tech 7s, and I adjusted my shift lever so they fit under. I was very comfortable with my ATGATT stance before, but after watching your accident, I stopped carrying gear on the back of my bike. That was horrifying.

    I have rode for years since 1981 on two wheeler, cycle since ever and mopeds, scooters with gears in left hand, automatic Honda Activa till recently in India. Never wore any gear or helmet, particularly because we Sikhs wearing a turban are exempt from helmet ⛑
    However, I got a helmet for my wife since 1990 when she started to ride Kinetic Honda automatic scooter. Even now when we go to india and she sits as pillion rider, she wears a helmet.
    Now I plan to buy a motorcycle 350cc and I plan to wear a helmet, proper shoes, a jean with Kevlar and pads on knees & hips and a jacket.
    I recently passed full manual motorcycle license testing in Australia and now feel that wearing the right gear, always, is the right thing to do

      it is cause you'll never know, there's just too little that we can control when we are on the road, but yeah sometimes it's just to hot to wear all the gears sometimes, i was drenched in sweat in today's ride to the dealership, just decided to take off the armor and jacket when i rode back home.

    Hey ma, what if I ride an electric bike and just want the wind protection part, do you still recommend the alpine races ? Or should I get another model from their line with less noise reduction ?

  • @4940markhutchins
    @4940markhutchins 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    True on the jeans armor. My DYNS jeans are nice to wear and are CE AAA abrasion resistant, but the armor, at least on me doesn’t stay in place, so I wear Bohn Body Armor under them. Superior armor coverage held in place by fishnet-type material.
    Protective jacket with an airbag vest made my ‘essential’ list.
    And that is one bitchen 750 SS you have there. Had one in college and wish I’d hung on to it and cafe’d it out.

    I agree that earplugs are a must. However, I got custom molded plugs specific for riding from an audiologist for under$200. Because they are molded, there are no hotspots and are all day comfortable. Insurance didn’t cover anything and I was pleasantly surprised they were under $200. Just my 2cents.

    The comment sections for these kinds of videos are always funny. You never get a middle ground, it’s always one group of people who think Levi’s are a death sentence and another who tout their right to bash their face into the pavement with no helmet.
    I’ve been wanting to get into riding for a while and I always deliberate over gear which I think is funny considering that where I live most people seem to prefer wearing just a t-shirt and shorts. At least helmets are required. :/

    • @metalsadman
      @metalsadman 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      helmet should be bare minimum, you can die even falling on a stand still. road rash, broken bones etc... yeah it's gonna be painful but you can live 😂

  • @hogueraleksander5868
    @hogueraleksander5868 22 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

    Lol. Fall at 20 mph with your skinny jeans and you will bruise your hip, get road rash on your ass, Pierce a leg with the bike, and probably fracture a knee. That can all happen at low speed. Now add 60+ mph to that number.
    Knees are super important if you care about things like walking and pain free for most of your life. Helmets are also optional for some people, but since you can literally die from a 14 inch fall.. I rather use one, always.

    • @JacobBaldry
      @JacobBaldry  22 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      At the end of the day, there will be valid criticism for any piece of gear that is beneath an airbag-equiped race suit. All the gear, all the time, as they say, is always best. Ultimately, the goal is to encourage riders to wear at least the essential gear consistently and understand the trade-offs. Full protective gear is always the safest option, but even partial gear can significantly reduce the risk of injury compared to riding unprotected. Stay safe out there.

  • @blondiejoe
    @blondiejoe 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    It's so true that most riding jeans don't put the armour where it's supposed to be at all. Apparel manufacturers are all just making so much money on extremely expensive pants with this giant elephant in the room. Racing leathers and stuff like that have them positioned better. I had some bowtex leggings that were clearly offset a bit to put the armour in the right place too. The only jeans I've found that do ok are revit Jackson 2s. They are tight enough and the big sheet of level 1 armour is a big enough patch to be positioned to the outside and stay there. That said, an actual nice level 2 D30 knee pad would never sit right in them. Armour in riding jeans is an absolute joke most of the time. If armour placement was a safety standard, the vast majority of these stupid pants would be disqualified immediately.
