  • Well, this is it!
After years of admiring it from afar, I have finally done the unthinkable and bought a Renault Vel Satis!
Call me crazy but I love this car… we’ll see how that goes.
You can find more videos of the Vel Satis on my channel, including a few POV drives, a 0-100 km/h test and, coming soon, a headlights test.

Such a coincidence that you published this video right now.
At the moment I am considering buying a Renault Vel Satis myself.
By the way, I live in Holland. Here the selling prices for the Vel Satis are quite low at the moment although they have already risen quite a bit the last years.
I test drove a few Vel Satis myself. These all were the 2.0T ones. Also, the one with the 2 liter turbo engine which, as a matter of fact, do have a good amount of low rpm torque and are quite nice to drive. All the ones I have driven had the automatic gearbox although I would prefer the manual gearbox in combination with the 2 liter turbo engine. Unfortunately I have never driven a 3.5 liter Vel Satis. One time I test drove an Espace 4 with this Nissan engine and it was quite a pleasure to drive I must say. The sound when you accelerate is awesome.
As I drive quite a lot of kilometers myself unfortunately the 3.5 liter one is not an option for me. Gas prices simply are to high at the moment and it will cost me a fortune on gasoline as I drive around 25000 kms a year.
The one you have is a very nice example. It is in real good condition I think and it doesn't have a lot of kilometers on the clock. In Holland I have seen a few ones with the 3.5 liter engine which had already more than 300.000 km on the clock.
The only thing that keeps me from buying one is the expected reliability. On forums I have read that the Vel Satis is quite a complicated car to maintain in good condition. They also say that the facelift models from 2006 and on have been very improved in comparison with the pre 2006 ones. Especially the electronics should be much better on the ones after 2005.
As far as the sticky plastydip panels in the interior are concerned, there should be a way to remove this sticky layer according to a Dutch TH-camr: th-cam.com/video/Aa_HGYgDNZM/w-d-xo.html. It looks quite amazing after having removed the sticky plastydip.
I have made myself a member of several Renault Vel Satis forums. The Dutch one: www.renaultvelsatis.nl/index.php?sid=b1eada32736e1f8777898dbbb5b37304. And the French one: www.forumvelsatis.fr/phpBB3/index.php
A lot of tips and information on the Vel Satis can be found there!!
I am very interested in your experiences with your Vel Satis and I am defenitely going to follow your videos on the Vel Satis!!

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks for all the info! I'll look into making the plastics look decent haha.
Indeed, the fuel consumption is quite atrocious, I'm getting 11L/100km in a mix between highway and city which is a little more than my Lexus of the same year (and same power) did.
I'll keep you posted on the reliability, so far engine and electronics are good, I've just had to change the front brakes and a few little bits in the steering which I think is nothing unheard of for a car of this age. We'll see how it goes.

    • @anfahrt

@ Thank you for your kind answer.
Yes, the inner and outer tie rod ends are a weak point on the Vel Satis as it is quite a heavy car and they wear fast. Fortunately it's not a big job to change them and parts are quite cheap to buy on the internet. After replacing the tie rods the car needs to be realigned.
After studying the forums I must say that apart from the electronic problems in the first years to 2005 the Vel Satis is a pretty solid car. The 2 liter turbo is very reliable. Only the turbo's will break between 200.000 and 300.000 kms and the water cooled alternator can break which is a pretty expensive part. The 3.5 V6 also is reliable although I once saw one which had a knocking engine as a result of a bad rod. But that one already had over 300.000 kms.
I think your Vel Satis is worth restoring the best you can. I think in a few years the Vel Satis will go up in price quite a bit. They are pretty rare and I think they will become collector items in the future. Same as the Renault Avantime did.

Lovely car! I run the UK owners club and sadly we never got the phase 2 with all the improvements! Hope you're enjoying life with it
(P.s. There are some engine covers missing from under the bonnet of yours I don't know if you knew that)

    •  ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks! Are there a lot of Vel Satis in the UK? I actually sold mine a couple of months ago because the maintenance was a bit more than I could manage, especially the fuel consumption coupled with today's fuel prices, but I do miss it! It's nice to know there are people taking care of theirs so they keep driving around ;)
Didn't know about the engine covers and would never have figured it out! Thanks

Gratuluji.

And you also picked the correct engine. I had one and will have another. Where did you find it, leboncoin? 196km but very nicely cared for. Any problems with handbrake and windows? I hope it runs great. I assume you bought it in france?

    • @Weasel4Fun

I think you can install an aux cable if you connect it the radio!

You can also clean the gunk with a special cleaner or even lemon juice.

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

So far the handbrake works fine and all the windows work except the rear-left which grinds a bit but still works. And yes, I'll try to install the AUX cable soon! Same for the gunk. Thanks for the compliments. I bought it via Leboncoin near Paris where I live.

Nice car, congrats! is this engine reliable? Can it go beyond 300k?

    •  ปีที่แล้ว

Hi, thanks! The engine in itself is very reliable, the things I've had to change are pretty normal stuff at this age: alternator, radiator (which had rock chips) and parts of the A/C. I'd say it could probably do 300k+ with the proper maintenance.

Hi! I am looking for a Vel Satis with 2.2 Dci diesel engine. The price is about 2700 euros. Do you think it is a good car for city driving? Also, do you know how much diesel it consumpts in city. There is no one I know to ask about this car with this engine. Thanks!

    •  ปีที่แล้ว

Hi there. It’s not really made for city driving, i didn’t have problems with it because I rarely drove it into Paris and I had a garage so I didn’t have to look for a spot every time, if you do you should consider something a little smaller! Driving it in traffic isn’t too bad because it’s very comfortable. As for the engine, not sure about the consumption of the diesel but it should be around 12L/100km in the city and maybe 9-10L/100km on the highway. I think the 2.2 might feel a little underpowered since the car is quite heavy but I never tried it so can’t say for sure. Mine was about 5L more for each segment haha.

    • @Mr.Vercetti80
      @Mr.Vercetti80 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@ I don't live in a crowded city. Actually, what I mean by city driving is 8-10 kilometers a day at a constant speed of 50 km/h. I am currently using 1.5 Dci Nissan Qashqai+2. It has the same weight with Vel Satis. I'm not looking for performance, but at least 7-8 liters of urban consumption would make me happy ;) Thank you very much for the information you gave. Vel Satis is a great car. Have a nice ride!
